Teacher Education Physical Education: In Search Of A Hybrid Space, T Lynch Dec 2015

Teacher Education Physical Education: In Search Of A Hybrid Space, T Lynch

Plymouth Institute of Education

It is argued that a learning environment underpinned by a strengths-based collaborative approach between universities and schools offers extended pre-service teacher learning opportunities and subsequently enhanced preparation. The term “hybrid space” describes the ideal environment of shared partnership where knowledge is jointly created, and consequently, as too is collaborative egalitarianism between stakeholders. This study investigates a possible “hybrid space” course within Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) in the UK. While much literature discusses the advantages of the “hybrid space” ideal across education disciplines, high-quality research into PETE hybrid spaces is limited, if not non-existent. Hence, the particular course was chosen …

Sustainable Construction In Remote Cold Regions, Robert Perkins Dec 2015

Sustainable Construction In Remote Cold Regions, Robert Perkins

CESTiCC Project Reports

The goal of this project was to identify sustainable construction techniques appropriate for remote and cold regions, some of which apply to operations and maintenance as well. The vast body of literature regarding green construction in warm regions was reviewed, and information that might be applicable to cold and remote regions was ascertained. A hierarchal taxonomy was developed to categorize the information and reduce it to a form useful for presentation to engineering and construction managers. Twenty-two engineers and construction managers, all familiar with cold regions and remote projects, were interviewed, and the information and taxonomy were reviewed with them. …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Background and purpose: Nerve conduction study (NCS) and ultrasonography (US) are used to support the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). The ability of the Semmes-Weinstein monofilament test (SWMT), a sensibility threshold test, to detect CTS, and its relationship to clinical severity, NCS, and US, remain controversial. We conducted this study to address this controversy. Method: Thirty-three patients presenting with typical symptoms and signs of CTS and 20 normal subjects were enrolled. SWMT on the index finger, NCS, and US of the cross-sectional area of the median nerve at the pisiform level (PCSA) were performed. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves …

Assessment Of Visual Dysfunction In A Patient With Right Occipital Infarct, Li-Ting Tsai, Yu-Chin Su, William H.A. Beaudot, Yun-Hsiang Yang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Purpose: This study describes a patient with multiple visual impairments following right occipital infarction in the posterior cerebral artery (PCA) territory. The earliest stage of cortical processing of visual information occurs in the occipital lobe, so damage to this lobe causes not only visual field deficits but also other forms of visual problems. However, few cases of this sort have previously been reported in the literature. casereport: A 54-year-old female suffered from a progressive throbbing headache over the right occipital area for 2 weeks. Blurred vision and left hemianopia were found, and brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed cerebral infarction over …

An Examination Of The Practice Of Aligning Speech-Language Therapy Goals To The Common Core State Standards For English Language Arts, Gerard Francis Shine Dec 2015

An Examination Of The Practice Of Aligning Speech-Language Therapy Goals To The Common Core State Standards For English Language Arts, Gerard Francis Shine

Theses and Dissertations

Implementation of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) is now a curriculum priority for school districts across the United States. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are exploring ways to incorporate the CCSS into their assessment and therapy practices. Literature centered on the development of language goals aligned with the CCSS for English language arts (ELA) was limited. The purpose of this study was to identify if SLPs working in public elementary and middle school settings had adopted the practice of aligning their language-intervention goals to the CCSS for ELA for students on their caseloads. Perceived feasibility of language goal alignment to the …

Reparation For Betrayal Of Trust In Child Sexual Abuse Cases: The Christian Duty Of Care, Vicarious Liability And The Church Of England, Ka Stevenson, J Rowbotham, J Lowther

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

Feminist challenges to the traditional principles of vicarious liability highlight the difficulties facing claimants seeking redress via a doctrine largely developed in relation to the corporate model reflecting masculine traits of institutional power and control embedded in the traditional enterprise employer/employee relationship. This article explores the ways in which the recent spate of claims made against UK religious authorities regarding present and historic acts of child sexual abuse perpetrated by clergy have forced a paradigm shift requiring the courts to consider influences on the legal process associated with tropes of restorative justice, powerfully supported and explained by feminist legal theorists. …

Dynamic Interrelationships In Returns And Volatilities Among Shipping Freight Markets, Avinash Kumar Dec 2015

Dynamic Interrelationships In Returns And Volatilities Among Shipping Freight Markets, Avinash Kumar

World Maritime University Dissertations

This paper explores and analyzes the return lead-lag relationships and volatility transmission among dry bulk, container and tanker shipping freight market after the financial crisis in 2008. However, there are few numbers of studies that investigates such interactions between shipping freight markets, but no studies that also consider potential linkage between container and tanker freight market. This study fills the gap by examining lead-lag and volatility spillover effects among these three shipping freight markets. The Granger causality test and the co-integration analysis are applied to investigate the lead-lag relationship among the Baltic dry index (BDI), Shanghai (export) containerized freight index …

The Ferguson V. Jonah Verdict And A Path Towards National Cessation Of Gay-To-Straight "Conversion Therapy", Peter R. Dubrowski Dec 2015

The Ferguson V. Jonah Verdict And A Path Towards National Cessation Of Gay-To-Straight "Conversion Therapy", Peter R. Dubrowski

NULR Online

In the essay, Dubrowski analyzes Ferguson v. JONAH, a landmark 2015 decision in which a New Jersey court held --- for the first time --- that homosexuality is not a disease or mental disorder as a matter of law. Based on this pretrial ruling, a civil jury unanimously found JONAH (a conversion therapy clinic) its co-directors and its chief counselor liable for violation of New Jersey's Consumer Fraud Act. Dubrowski begins by explaining the two-pronged fraud JONAH perpetrated—first, claiming that homosexuality is a disorder, and second, that it can be cured—and continues by arguing that this two-pronged fraud is …

Promoting Health Literacy For People With Disabilities And Clinicians Through A Teamwork Model, David W. Hollar Jr., Jennifer Rowland Dec 2015

Promoting Health Literacy For People With Disabilities And Clinicians Through A Teamwork Model, David W. Hollar Jr., Jennifer Rowland

Journal of Family Strengths

Current health literacy programs for people with disabilities lack clear operational definitions, rely on inconsistent health literacy statistics, and tend to follow a medical model approach that often fallaciously assumes people with disabilities have limited health knowledge. The central issue in addressing and improving health literacy among people with disabilities is to focus on clear and effective health communication among health care team members, including people with disabilities, which can ultimately improve this population’s health outcomes. Our proposed teamwork model builds upon the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) biopsychosocial model, decision-making theory, and health …

Epidemiology Of Hiv Among American Indians And Alaska Natives – United States, 2008-2011, Frances J. Walker, Jane M. Kelly, Mona Doshani, Neeraja Saduvala, Joseph Prejean

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

American Indians/Alaska Natives (AI/AN) diagnosed with HIV infection have poorer survivorship and a higher percentage of Stage 3 (AIDS] diagnoses within one year of HIV diagnosis, compared to most race/ethnicity groups. National HIV surveillance data for 2008-2011 were used to determine diagnosis rates of HIV infection, persons living with HIV, and persons with a late diagnosis (Stage 3 within three months of HIV diagnosis) by selected characteristics for AI/AN and a combined other race/ethnicity group. The highest percentages of 862 AI/AN diagnosed with HIV infection were among males (75.7%), AI/AN aged 25-34 years (32.9%), persons living in large metropolitan areas …

Community Based Participatory Research: The Application And Lessons Learned From A Study With Lgb College Students, Caitlin M. Stover Dec 2015

Community Based Participatory Research: The Application And Lessons Learned From A Study With Lgb College Students, Caitlin M. Stover

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals are members of a vulnerable group where health disparities have been identified. To gain a better understanding of the LGB college student healthcare experience and its contribution to the healthcare disparities found in LGB population, a community based participatory research (CBPR) approach was used to fill the gap. This paper will outline the CBPR process with an emphasis on how the principle investigator applied the tenets of CBPR when working with a local LGB college community. Several lessons learned from the research process are also shared in this paper.

Understanding How Components Of Black Racial Identity And Racial Realities May Impact Healthcare Utilization: A Randomized Study, Alexander M. Chaitoff, Thomas Wickizer, Ismail White Dec 2015

Understanding How Components Of Black Racial Identity And Racial Realities May Impact Healthcare Utilization: A Randomized Study, Alexander M. Chaitoff, Thomas Wickizer, Ismail White

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Purpose: Studies have suggested that even when minority groups have potential access to healthcare, they may have inadequate utilization (realized access). This study explores the application of a theory from the social psychology and political science literatures concerning how racial centrality and racial realities, specifically amongst Blacks, may influence patients’ healthcare utilization preferences.

Methods: We created a survey with two (pseudo) randomized, controlled experimental treatments designed to assess whether racialized hospital and physician characteristics elicited a preference from Black or White respondents, as well as questions aimed at understanding participants’ different beliefs and levels of knowledge about past and current …

Role Of Language In Foreign Students ' Adjustment Process In The Study Of Introductory Accounting Courses, Said Juma Suluo

Business Management Review

This study examines the role of language in facilitating the foreign students ' adjustment process in the study of introductory accounting courses at the University of Dar es Salaam Business School. Data were collected through focus group discussions and interviews and then analysed thematically. The findings generally show that introductory accounting courses posed challenged and, as such, collaboration among students was perceived to be the most successful study strategy. However, foreign students could not successfully collaborate with their local counterparts due to their lack of aptitude in the local language, Kiswahili, coupled with the local students ' preferring to use …

Citizen Havel And The Construction Of Czech Presidentiality, Timothy Barney Dec 2015

Citizen Havel And The Construction Of Czech Presidentiality, Timothy Barney

Rhetoric and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Václav Havel had two eventful terms as the first democratic president of the Czech Republic. The documentary Citizen Havel is one rhetorical artifact that captures the way a new democracy and its attendant executive power is constructed consciously in real time in a political culture where such a tradition has largely not existed. Culled from ten years of fly-on-the-wall-style footage, Citizen Havel captures the tensions between the constitutional expectations of the Czech presidency and Havel's own extraconstitutional interpretations of executive power. Ultimately, this essay argues that Citizen Havel is one influential representation of how Czech “presidentiality” during the post-communist transition …
