Finding The Resilient Teacher Within: A Workshop To Address K-12 Teacher Well-Being, Laura Jones Dec 2015

Finding The Resilient Teacher Within: A Workshop To Address K-12 Teacher Well-Being, Laura Jones

Educational Specialist, 2009-2019

Teacher stress comes from a variety of sources: accountability pressures, lack of time to relax, students who are not motivated, excessive duties and responsibilities that go beyond the classroom, testing pressure, large class size, lack of administrative support, and general concern for the safety and well being of their students (Richards, 2012). As a result of the constant high stress, more teachers are reporting mental/physical health issues and leaving the profession (Richards, 2012). One way to help deal with the stress teachers are feeling is to strengthen the teacher from within by using the resources they have already. This paper …

Addressing The Mental Health Needs Of Women In Rural Communities: A Women’S Wellness Group, Andriana Hench

Educational Specialist, 2009-2019

This paper explores the mental health needs of women in rural communities. Based on Myers and Sweeny’s Wellness Model (2008), as well as other relevant research, I have developed a group curriculum as a unique intervention to reach this specific population. This paper provides an overview of relevant literature and includes both a handbook for group facilitators and a participant workbook that compliments the facilitator handbook. This group curriculum is suggested for Clinical Mental Health Counselors and other mental health professionals to promote wellness among rural women.

Methods For Coating Quartz Crystals, William Patrick Dec 2015

Methods For Coating Quartz Crystals, William Patrick

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

The goal of this project was to evaluate the effectiveness a procedure that can be used to coat quartz crystal microbalance crystals with titanium dioxide. A successful suspension was created by suspending titanium dioxide powder in poly(acrlic) acid and mixed in an ultra-sonication bath. By utilizing a spin-coater, the TiO2 suspension was successfully dispensed onto a QCM crystal and verified using a surface profiler and microscope. However, after QCM testing, there was no evidence that supports the TiO2 precursor aiding in photocatalytic reactions.

The End Of Law: The Isil Case Study For A Comprehensive Theory Of Lawlessness, Frédéric Gilles Sourgens Dec 2015

The End Of Law: The Isil Case Study For A Comprehensive Theory Of Lawlessness, Frédéric Gilles Sourgens

Fordham International Law Journal

This Article has five parts. Part I sets out and adopts the basic premises of the jurisprudential perspective championed by Professor Reisman and sketches his argument that legal solutions can always be fashioned in a meaningful and realistic manner. Part II discusses the development of ISIL in the Middle East. Part III analyzes the lawlessness problem created by ISIL for the affected local communities and explains how loss of control, left unattended, transforms into a loss of authority of prescription by destroying the social fabric needed for legal processes to have meaning. Part IV develops how municipal lawlessness has a …

Do Psychological Traits Explain Differences In Free Riding? Experimental Evidence, Gregory Deangelo, Hannes Lang, Bryan C. Mccannon Dec 2015

Do Psychological Traits Explain Differences In Free Riding? Experimental Evidence, Gregory Deangelo, Hannes Lang, Bryan C. Mccannon

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

We explore the relationship between common psychological traits, such as Theory of the Mind, Rational‐Experiential Inventory, and Big Five Personality styles, and willingness to contribute to public goods. Then, motivated by research that has indicated a relationship between past social interactions and cooperativeness, we consider the interaction between past game outcomes and psychological traits on free riding. We show that psychological traits of individuals have both a direct effect on free riding behavior, as well as an indirect effect as it enhances the correlation between past strategic behavior and public goods giving. Thus, the measurement tools of social psychology and …

Money And The Scale Of Cooperation, Maria Bigoni, Gabriele Camera, Marco Casari Dec 2015

Money And The Scale Of Cooperation, Maria Bigoni, Gabriele Camera, Marco Casari

ESI Working Papers

This study reveals the existence of a causal link between the availability of money and an expanded scale of interaction. We constructed an experiment where participants chose the group size, either a low-value partnership or a high-value group of strangers, and then faced an intertemporal cooperative task. Theoretically, a monetary system was inessential to achieve cooperation. Empirically, without a working monetary system, participants were reluctant to expand the scale of interaction; and when they did, they ended up destroying surplus compared to partnerships, because cooperation collapsed in large groups. This economic failure was reversed only when participants managed to concurrently …

Improving Patient Safety Through Accurate Medication Reconciliation, Dominique Watt Dec 2015

Improving Patient Safety Through Accurate Medication Reconciliation, Dominique Watt

Master's Projects and Capstones

Medication errors due to incorrect medication reconciliation are a very present and serious problem in our microsystem. As an preop/postop outpatient unit, we see an average of 50 patients daily and perform medication reconciliations regularly. The problem is our nurses perform this task inconsistently and often incomplete, leading us to potential medication errors. During my CNL project, I worked with a committee of staff champions and developed a standard work guide for nurses to use in order to effective reconcile patient medications. We used fishbone diagrams, audit tools, surveys and led regular discussions in our huddles in order to develop …

The Technological Embodiment Of Colonialism In Puerto Rico, Manuel G. Aviles-Santiago Dec 2015

The Technological Embodiment Of Colonialism In Puerto Rico, Manuel G. Aviles-Santiago

Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal

This essay explores three historical events that took place during the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries in Puerto Rico to extract the ways in which new technologies became the vehicle for massive political and economic disruptions. The first event recalls the electrification of Old San Juan and the change from kerosene gas to electricity, which prompted a grassroots revolt in which the quarter’s street-lamps were torn down. The second was less a mass revolt than a symbolically resonant moment in the encounter between the Puerto Rican independence movement and the Puerto Rican establishment when militants from a pro-independence faction, allegedly …

A Comparative Case Study Of Georgia Delegations At The 2012 National Party Conventions, Carolyn S. Carlson, Jeff R. Dewitt, Kerwin Swint

Georgia Journal of Public Policy

From August 26 to September 8, nine political science students and four supervising faculty traveled from Kennesaw State University to the 2012 Republican National Convention and the Democratic National Convention as part of special topics course on a course titled “Party Conventions Field Study”. While in Tampa and Charlotte, the students and faculty immersed themselves in a “real world” educational environment and in doing so gained extraordinary first-hand exposure to a fundamental, yet not well understood, part of the American political process. Students directly engaged with convention proceedings and participants, primarily the Georgia state party delegations, and implemented pre-approved research …

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

Despite increasing interest in providing interprofessional education (IPE) opportunities for health profession students, the logistics of scheduling and integrating diverse curriculums remain challenging. Several models to address these potential barriers have been proposed and utilized (Blue et al, 2010). Faculty from three colleges within Thomas Jefferson University developed an asynchronous online interprofessional course as one solution to overcome logistical barriers to IPE.

Interprofessional Grand Rounds is offered to third year pharmacy students and second year occupational therapy (OT) students in the fall semester. The course utilizes a variety of learning activities to evaluate the influence of current public health and …

Fnp Led Mobile Health Services For The Homeless Population, Tenzin D. Lama Dec 2015

Fnp Led Mobile Health Services For The Homeless Population, Tenzin D. Lama

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

A small percentage of the U.S. population uses the greatest portion of the healthcare services. Homeless people are often such a group of “super-utilizers” of the healthcare system. Due to multiple medical and psychosocial conditions, people experiencing homelessness face numerous barriers to accessing healthcare, thus leading increased utilization of hospitals and emergency departments (EDs) services. Many of these events are preventable through improved primary care interventions. The literature on Respite/Recuperative Care, Transitional Care, and Mobile Health interventions have shown effectiveness in providing safe and quality care to homeless individuals during the critical transitional period post hospital discharge while also reducing …

Approximately 78 million American adults, 20 years and older, have hypertension, 31.9 million have elevated serum cholesterol levels, and 68.2 million use tobacco products. Within California, San Francisco (SF) was ranked 8th among counties with adult residents that have CVD. It is estimated that approximately 1.02% of these individuals will have a stroke each year and 16.25% will die from stroke. Of those that survive, it is estimated that at least half will develop neurologic deficits, and at …

Preferred Signals, 1985, Woody Skinner Dec 2015

Preferred Signals, 1985, Woody Skinner

Booth

We lived in a place where cable didn’t exist. Our water was pumped from a well, our electricity streaming in on a TVA river wave. We lived in Izard County, Arkansas, where dirt roads ribboned through hills, where people were all but waiting on a filmmaker to document their poverty.

But we had a satellite dish in our front yard. A marvel of engineering, a jellyfish puffing toward the sky. Its frame stiff, shiny, a monument to mass communication. According to my father, we were devotees of manufacturing, people who made an art out of industry. The satellite dish, the …

Teaching Compassion In Prison: A Key To Learning, Em Strang Dec 2015

Teaching Compassion In Prison: A Key To Learning, Em Strang

Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)

In a project with long-term prisoners at HMP Dumfries, Scotland, tutors and students explore the notion and application of compassion, focusing in particular on the ways in which understanding compassion enables learning – not just the learning of academic subjects but also of interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence. The project highlights the benefits of teaching a so-called extracurricular subject, at the same time as revealing its centrality to learning in the first place. A lack of adequate teaching time in prison, and the fact that compassion is not considered a core subject in education, are both cited as obstacles in …

Transformative Leadership: Building Social Equity Through Individualized Professional Development, Curtis David Gunn Dec 2015

Transformative Leadership: Building Social Equity Through Individualized Professional Development, Curtis David Gunn

Dissertations

Developing social justice awareness is a challenging task. Many educational institutions have limited discourse related to race and equity. This autoethnography examines one leader’s attempt to become a transformational leader by having ongoing conversations about race and racism, applying the individualized transformative model of professional development during conversations, utilizing a peer advisory group for feedback, and reflecting on the results. Findings reveal the most important element for growth is the act of engaging in the conversation regardless of one’s perceived level of competence. The individualized transformative model of professional development was demonstrated to be an effective approach to professional development.
