Adverse Outcome Pathways Can Drive Non‐Animal Approaches For Safety Assessment, N Burden, F Sewell, Me Andersen, A Boobis, Jk Chipman, Mtd Cronin, Th Hutchinson, I Kimber, M Whelan

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

AbstractAdverse Outcome Pathways (AOPs) provide an opportunity to develop new and more accurate safety assessment processes for drugs and other chemicals, and may ultimately play an important role in regulatory decision making. Not only can the development and application of AOPs pave the way for the development of improved evidence‐based approaches for hazard and risk assessment, there is also the promise of a significant impact on animal welfare, with a reduced reliance on animal‐based methods. The establishment of a useable and coherent knowledge framework under which AOPs will be developed and applied has been a first critical step towards realizing …

A Systematic Review Of Social Networks Research In Information Systems: Building A Foundation For Exciting Future Research, Jinwei Cao, Kamile Asli Basoglu, Hong Sheng, Paul Benjamin Lowry

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

Social networking applications such as blogs, instant messengers, podcasts, social networking websites (e.g., Renren in China, Vkontakte in Russia, Facebook), professional networking websites (e.g., LinkedIn), Twitter, and virtual worlds (e.g., Second Life) have become increasingly popular in the last few years. Because these applications have substantial implications for users, organizations, and society, social networks (SNs) have gained attention from information systems (IS) researchers and grown steadily as a research area since 2004 However, to organize the accumulated research and encourage researchers to examine new and pressing issues in SNs, available knowledge needs to be synthesized and research gaps need to …

Investigating Anhedonia In A Non-Conventional Species: Do Some Riding Horses Equus Caballus Display Symptoms Of Depression?, C Fureix, C Beaulieu, S Argaud, C Rochais, Et Al

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Investigating depression-like conditions in animals is methodologically challenging, but potentially important for welfare. Some riding horses display ‘withdrawn’ states of inactivity and low responsiveness that resemble the reduced engagement with the environment shown by certain depressed patients. To assess whether these animals are experiencing a depression-like state, we investigated anhedonia – the loss of pleasure, a key symptom of human depression – in 20 withdrawn and non-withdrawn horses from the same stable. The time horses spent being withdrawn appeared unrelated to age or sex, but correlated with time devoted to stereotypic behaviour, a possible marker of lifetime stress. Comparison with …

Glandular Trichome Evaluation Through Scanning Electron Microscopy And The Modified Enzymic Browning Assay, Adriana Virginia Rodríguez García Jan 2015

Glandular Trichome Evaluation Through Scanning Electron Microscopy And The Modified Enzymic Browning Assay, Adriana Virginia Rodríguez García

Plant Sciences

Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) ranks fifth in the USA in comparison with other countries regarding potato production. Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say) is a devastating insect pest affecting potato in Canada and USA. Several researchers demonstrated that glandular trichomes on potato leaves provided CPB resistance. The experimental approach consisted of using Scanning Electron Microscope to assess the presence of glandular trichomes, the Modified Enzymic Browning Assay to screen leaves for the presence of glandular trichomes, and a two-year field trial to evaluate CPB defoliation effects on potato genotypes. The SEM provided a closer look at the morphology and quantity …

Reorienting Restorative Justice: Initiating A New Dialogue Of Rights Consciousness, Community Empowerment And Politicization, Thalia Gonzalez Jan 2015

Reorienting Restorative Justice: Initiating A New Dialogue Of Rights Consciousness, Community Empowerment And Politicization, Thalia Gonzalez

Faculty Scholarship

For the last three decades scholars have explored the practice of restorative justice as a crime control mechanism in a multitude of settings. Much of the discourse has focused on restorative justice as an alternative to traditional punitive and retributive criminal justice processes. Whether restorative or punitive, criminal justice processes that seek to address harm are not apart, above, or outside social, cultural and political relations. This Article seeks to initiate a new dialogue of justice and argues that the ontology of restorative justice should to be viewed to include a liberatory moment of politicization focused on promoting equality and …

Genetic And Environmental Variation On Mineral Nutrient Concentration In Pea And Lentil Seed, Eliina Adhikari Jan 2015

Genetic And Environmental Variation On Mineral Nutrient Concentration In Pea And Lentil Seed, Eliina Adhikari

Plant Sciences

Current food supply is expected to be insufficient to support the growing population both in quantity and nutritional quality; therefore, the need to breed for higher yield and greater nutritional quality is urgent. Twenty-five dry pea genotypes, 25 Turkish red lentil and 23 green lentil genotypes were tested across different locations of North Dakota to quantify the nutrient concentration and to characterize the genotype and the environmental factors affecting nutrient concentration. Significant genotypic, environmental and genotype-by-environment interaction was present for Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, P and Zn analyzed in dry pea and lentil. A range of correlations among …

Measuring The Values And Costs Of Experiential Education, Report Of The Working Group On Cost And Sustainability, Stephen Ellmann, K. R. Kruse

Articles & Chapters

This report is one of a series of Working Group reports from the Alliance for Experiential Education in Law, collected in “Experience the Future: Papers from the Second National Symposium on Experiential Education in Law,” 7 Elon Law Review 1-108 (2015). The Report of the Working Group on Cost and Sustainability seeks to provide a basis for thoughtful analysis and discussion of both the values and costs of experiential legal education by breaking those values and costs down into their component parts. The way these component parts are arranged will vary from school to school, and this report does not …

'Love Is Just A Four-Letter Word': Sexuality, International Human Rights, And Therapeutic Jurisprudence, Michael L. Perlin, Alison Lynch

Articles & Chapters

One of the most controversial social policy issues that remains dramatically underdiscussed in scholarly literature is the sexual autonomy of persons with psychosocial and intellectual disabilities, especially those who are institutionalized. This population – always marginalized and stigmatized – has traditionally faced a double set of conflicting prejudices: on one hand, people with disabilities are infantilized (as not being capable of having the same range of sexual desires, needs and expectations as persons without disabilities), and on the other, this population is demonized (as being hypersexual, unable to control base or primitive urges). Although attitudes about the abilities and capabilities …

There's A Dyin Voice Within Me Reaching Out Somewhere: How Tj Can Bring Voice To The Teaching Of Mental Disability Law And Criminal Law, Michael L. Perlin

Articles & Chapters

In this article, I discuss my historical involvement with therapeutic jurisprudence (TJ), how I use it in my classes (both in the free-standing TJ class and in all the others that I teach), its role in my written scholarship, and its role in conferences that I regularly attend. Although this is all positive and supportive of all efforts to widen the appeal of TJ as well as its applicability in the classroom, in scholarship and in “real life,” I also share some information that is far from optimistic with regard to the way that TJ is being reacted to by …

You Might Have Drugs At Your Command: Reconsidering The Forced Drugging Of Incompetent Pre-Trial Detainnes From The Perspectives Of International Human Rights And Income Inequality, Michael L. Perlin, Meredith Schriver

Articles & Chapters

Ever since the Supreme Court's 2003 decision in Sell v. United States, 539 U.S. 166 (2003), there has been a cottage industry of commentary on the question of whether the state can medicate an incompetent defendant for the purpose of making him or her competent to stand trial. Moreover, there have been multiple cases interpreting Sell broadly and narrowly, both in the context of medication issues and in the context of other treatments. Because of the vagueness of certain terminology, questions such as what a "serious" crime is, what "substantially" meant to the Court in Sell, and how the least …

Administrating Patent Litigation, Jacob S. Sherkow Jan 2015

Administrating Patent Litigation, Jacob S. Sherkow

Articles & Chapters

Recent patent litigation reform efforts have focused on every branch of govemment-Congress, the President, and the federal courts-save the fourth: administrative agencies. Agencies, however, possess a variety of functions in patent litigation: they serve as "gatekeepers" to litigation in federal court; they provide scientific and technical expertise to patent disputes; they review patent litigation to fulfill their own mandates; and they serve, in several instances, as entirely alternative fora to federal litigation.

Understanding administrative agencies' functions in managing or directing, i.e., "administrating," patent litigation sheds both descriptive and normative insight on several aspects of patent reform. These include several problems …

Privacy As Trust: Sharing Personal Information In A Networked World, Ari Ezra Waldman Jan 2015

Privacy As Trust: Sharing Personal Information In A Networked World, Ari Ezra Waldman

Articles & Chapters

This Article is the first in a series on the legal and sociological aspects of privacy, arguing that private contexts are defined by relationships of trust among individuals. The argument reorients privacy scholarship from an individual right to social relationships of disclosure. This has implications for a wide variety of vexing problems of modern privacy law, from limited disclosures to “revenge porn.”

The common everyday understanding is that privacy is about choice, autonomy, and individual freedom. It encompasses the individual’s right to determine what he will keep hidden and what, how, and when he will disclose to the public. Privacy …

How Teaching About Therapeutic Jurisprudence Can Be A Tool Of Social Justice, And Lead Law Students To Personally And Socially Rewarding Careers: Sexuality And Disability As A Case Example, Michael L. Perlin, Alison Lynch

Articles & Chapters

Therapeutic jurisprudence (TJ) asks us to look at law as it actually impacts people’s lives and focuses on the law’s influence on emotional life and psychological well-being. It suggests that law should value psychological health, should strive to avoid imposing anti-therapeutic consequences whenever possible, and — when consistent with other values served by law — should attempt to bring about healing and wellness. The ultimate aim of TJ is to determine whether legal rules and procedures or lawyer roles can or should be reshaped to enhance their therapeutic potential while not subordinating due process principles. An inquiry into therapeutic outcomes …

Discussing Advocacy Skills In Traditional Doctrinal Courses, Stephen A. Newman Jan 2015

Discussing Advocacy Skills In Traditional Doctrinal Courses, Stephen A. Newman

Articles & Chapters

Can teaching students in doctrinal courses, using traditional case-oriented materials, convey some of the skills lawyers need to practice law effectively? While the recent interest in and debate over training practice-ready lawyers makes this a timely question, my thinking about this harks back to the mid-1990s, when Harry Wellington, then dean of New York Law School, suggested that faculty members consider teaching law from the lawyer’s perspective rather than from the perspective of either the judge or the legal scholar.

In traditional doctrinal courses in law school, like my own in family law, coverage is broad and time is short. …

Postmarital Family Law: A Legal Structure For Nonmarital Families, Clare Huntington Jan 2015

Postmarital Family Law: A Legal Structure For Nonmarital Families, Clare Huntington

Faculty Scholarship

Family law is based on marriage, but family life increasingly is not. The American family is undergoing a seismic shift, with marriage rates steadily declining and more than four in ten children now born to unmarried parents. Children of unmarried parents fall far behind children of married parents on a variety of metrics, contributing to stark inequality among children. Poverty and related factors explain much of this differential, but new sociological evidence highlights family structure — particularly friction and dislocation between unmarried parents after their relationship ends — as a crucial part of the problem. As the trend toward nonmarital …
