Caffeine Intake In College Students, Michelle Gail Caldarone
Caffeine Intake In College Students, Michelle Gail Caldarone
Health Nutrition and Exercise Science
Caffeine is a widely consumed substance that is readily available through many sources that may influence consumption in the college setting. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between caffeine intake and sleep behavior and the effect of campus dining frequency on caffeine intake in college students. Three hundred and fifty students (212 males and 138 females) participated in a 72-hour dietary analysis that provided the students’ age, gender, body mass index (BMI), and physical activity level. The students were asked to record dining frequency as well. Ninety-six of the 350 students completed a 7-day sleep diary …

The Effects Of Kids’ Cooking Camps On Native American Children’S Knowledge And Habits Related To Food Safety, Preparation, And Nutrition, Kelly Rose Burdett
Health Nutrition and Exercise Science
A pilot research study was conducted to determine if cooking camps could increase knowledge and improve habits of Native American children related to food safety, nutrition, and reported food and exercise habits. Forty Native American youth were recruited for participation in one of four kids’ cooking camps. Each child took a pre-assessment upon their arrival at camp and a post-assessment on the last day of camp, as well as a pre- and post-test for each lesson. The children participated in lessons and food preparation activities during the six hours per day, four day camp. The thirty subjects taking both the …
The Un-Territoriality Of Data, Jennifer Daskal
The Un-Territoriality Of Data, Jennifer Daskal
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
Territoriality looms large in our jurisprudence, particularly as it relates to the government’s authority to search and seize. Fourth Amendment rights turn on whether the search or seizure takes place territorially or extraterritorially; the government’s surveillance authorities depend on whether the target is located within the United States or without; and courts’ warrant jurisdiction extends, with limited exceptions, only to the borders’ edge. Yet the rise of electronic data challenges territoriality at its core. Territoriality, after all, depends on the ability to define the relevant “here” and “there,” and it presumes that the “here” and “there” have normative significance. The …

Promises Kept, Promises Broken, Promises Deferred: The Americans With Disabilities Act, Robert Dinerstein
Promises Kept, Promises Broken, Promises Deferred: The Americans With Disabilities Act, Robert Dinerstein
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
This article, which is part of a 25th anniversary symposium on the ADA's impact on people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, argues that although the ADA has led to some demonstrable improvements in the lives of people with intellectual disabilities, in some areas it has been disappointing (especially because of well-known restrictive court decisions or unrealistic expectations of what the ADA could achieve), while in still other areas the success of the ADA is still "to be determined." The ADA cannot by itself eliminate stigma against people with disabilities, and it is up to advocates to push for judicial and …
Taking The Error Out Of 'Error Cost' Analysis: What's Wrong With Antitrust's Right, Jonathan Baker
Taking The Error Out Of 'Error Cost' Analysis: What's Wrong With Antitrust's Right, Jonathan Baker
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
This article catalogues a series of erroneous assumptions about the current competition policy environment made by today’s antitrust conservatives. These errors inappropriately tilt the application of a neutral economic tool, decision theory, toward non-interventionist outcomes.
Considering Trademark And Speech Rights Through The Lens Of Regulating Tobacco, Christine Haight Farley, Kavita Devaney
Considering Trademark And Speech Rights Through The Lens Of Regulating Tobacco, Christine Haight Farley, Kavita Devaney
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
Many tobacco company trademarks, such as MARLBORO, are extremely valuable. But valuable trademarks are often vulnerable both to copyists and to parodists. Tobacco trademarks face the additional vulnerability of onerous public health regulations, which can limit their appearance and use. When tobacco companies challenge these health regulations they do so on the grounds that the regulations violate their First Amendment speech rights. The law that is applied in these challenges is well developed, clear and predictable. When tobacco companies challenge unauthorized third-party uses of their marks, the speech rights involved are dealt with in a distinctly different manner. Under trademark …
Gendering Labor: How Foreign Direct Investment Affects State Behavior Towards Female Labor In South And Southeast Asia, Ritu Dhungana
Gendering Labor: How Foreign Direct Investment Affects State Behavior Towards Female Labor In South And Southeast Asia, Ritu Dhungana
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study examines the partnership between foreign capital (FDI) and state in manipulating women's labor. In this dissertation I have two research questions: My first research question is to determine whether the interaction between states and FDI renders workers vulnerable and unprotected. Other scholars have shown that states have been willing to relax labor laws (and offer non labor-related incentives) in order to attract FDI. My hypothesis is that cultural patriarchy intensifies this relationship between states and FDI, and further weakens the labor laws. My second research question is to identify the causal factors that bring about change in the …

No Comment: Will Cariou V. Prince Alter Copyright Judges’ Taste In Art?, Christine Haight Farley
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
Even before Campbell v. Acuff-Rose Music, Inc. made transformativeness the name of the game in fair use law, judges have been in search of artistic speech in their copyright fair use determinations, especially in appropriation art cases. Judges often find themselves ascribing meaning both to the defendant’s work and the plaintiff’s work when comparing the two in order to determine whether defendant’s art is new. So while many commentators attribute appropriation artist Jeff Koons’s victory in Blanch v. Koons after a string of losses to the development in fair use law contributed by Campbell, I instead argue that it has …
Manifestations Of The Maimed: The Perception Of Wounded Soldiers In The Civil War North, William R. Feeney
Manifestations Of The Maimed: The Perception Of Wounded Soldiers In The Civil War North, William R. Feeney
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Civil War produced over 350,000 permanently disabled men, in addition to millions of other types of injuries and diseases. Yet, despite the overwhelming destruction to men's bodies the war also laid the foundation for a number of notable advances. These generative changes include increased collaboration between medical professionals, an estimable reputation for individual surgeons, a budding international reputation for American medicine, nursing opportunities for upper class women, a rise in volunteerism in the north, and a public acceptance of anatomical study and exhibition. For all the prolific effects of the war, however, these transformations all required one thing, the …
Halim El-Dabh's Derabucca Notation And Its Implication On Performance Practice, Ryan Joseph Frost
Halim El-Dabh's Derabucca Notation And Its Implication On Performance Practice, Ryan Joseph Frost
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this document is to aid a performer's interpretation and preparation of Halim El-Dabh's Sonic No. 7 and No. 10, The Miraculous Tale, and Sweet and Prickly Pear. This project highlights the composer's unique method of notating techniques for the derabucca as well as his innovative compositional style in the aforementioned works. The original notational systems employed in these works represent one of the few written attempts to communicate advanced derabucca performance techniques to a classically-trained percussionist in published repertoire. Both prescriptive and descriptive in nature, these notational systems are the most ornate and visual of El-Dabh's writing …
Family Descriptions Of The Influence Of Cultural Factors On Transitions In Serious Illness, Veronica Gallo
Family Descriptions Of The Influence Of Cultural Factors On Transitions In Serious Illness, Veronica Gallo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Nearly 65 million Americans served as care provider to an ill or disabled adult, and over 1.6 million Americans participated in the care of a family member in hospice. Families experience transitions, or changes, throughout the serious illness trajectory. Throughout transitions in serious illness, families participate in the care, support, and decision-making for their ill family member. Families' lives are often disrupted during this time and families experience emotional, physical and psychological distress during transitions. In spite of this, families are rarely included in care, and little is known about how families make sense of transitions. Culture, and the factors …
A Consensus Based Decentralized State Estimation For Power Distribution Networks, Varun Garaga
A Consensus Based Decentralized State Estimation For Power Distribution Networks, Varun Garaga
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis presents a new Decentralized State Estimation algorithm using agents directed mainly to distribution power systems. This new algorithm solves problems that occur when one tries to estimate the state of the distribution power systems. By various reasons such as high levels of quality of service, automation capabilities and comparatively less size, those problems do not occur so frequently on the transmission systems. A consensus based static state estimation strategy for radial power distribution systems is proposed in this research. This thesis concentrates on the balanced systems.;There are buses acting as agents using which we can evaluate the local …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study discusses the practice of music-making by middle and upper class women in the nineteenth-century American South, and the ways in which the practice was continued in the decades following the Civil War amid changing class and gender politics. The study examines two sheet music collections, one from the South and one from the North, dating from the 1880s and 1890s. An examination of the content of these collections reveals differing attitudes over changing class and gender politics and acceptable practices for music-making in the North and South. A discussion of these young women and their families tells their …
Design Of Oxy-Coal Reactors For Calcium Carbide Production Using Cfd, Albio Gutierrez
Design Of Oxy-Coal Reactors For Calcium Carbide Production Using Cfd, Albio Gutierrez
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Oxy-coal combustion with recirculating flue gas is a promising technology in CO2 capture. This technology is intended to reduce emissions of CO2 and other pollutants, such as NOx and SO2. Since the CO2 concentration in flue gas is higher than in conventional air operation, CO2 capture is easier. Other unique applications of oxy-coal combustion are now possible due to the very high temperatures (circa 2000-2500°C) that can be generated with char/ O2 /CO 2 mixtures which in turn can be used to activate chemical reactions which can lead to high valued chemical products. This for example can be an economical …
Validation Of An Experimentally Motivated Predictive Model For The Spontaneous Clustering Of Receptors On The Cell Membrane, Emine Guven
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Membrane receptors are specialized membrane-bound proteins that facilitate communication be- tween the intracellular and extracellular membrane. They control signal initiation in many im- portant cellular signaling pathways. Cell signaling (or signal transduction) provides the logical inputs individual cells need in order to perform their role in the context of the organism. Signal- ing molecules such as hormones, neurotransmitters or growth factors, are secreted by cells in the organism as a result of certain conditions; the cells receiving the signal change (or maintain) their state in response to the signaling input. The incoming information is processed and the response is formulated …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study has taken a preliminary step toward determining whether education-entertainment messages have the same persuasive effects in a nonfictional talk show format as they traditionally do in a fictional narrative format. To test the various hypotheses which propose that persuasive effects of entertainment-education can occur in a non-fictional format, data was collected from 82 female students across two large lecture classes. Results of two independent samples t-tests did not support hypothesis one and two, as participants' self-efficacy and attitudes toward breast cancer screening were not significantly different as a result of which media clip was viewed. Hypothesis three and …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Carisoprodol is a centrally acting skeletal muscle relaxant frequently prescribed for the treatment of acute musculoskeletal conditions. Recreational use of carisoprodol is an increasing problem. Recent reports highlight the dangers involved in carisoprodol abuse, including severe withdrawal leading to seizures and death. Indeed, carisoprodol has been placed into schedule IV drug at federal level effective January 11, 2012 considering its alarming abuse rate. Until recently, it was widely accepted that the sedative effects of carisoprodol were due predominantly to its metabolite, meprobamate. Our lab recently concluded, that carisoprodol itself, at low concentrations allosterically modulates and at higher concentrations directly activates …
