Believe It Or Not: Examining The Case For Intuitive Logic And Effortful Beliefs, Stephanie Howarth Jan 2015

Believe It Or Not: Examining The Case For Intuitive Logic And Effortful Beliefs, Stephanie Howarth

School of Psychology Theses

The overall objective of this thesis was to test the Default Interventionist (DI) account of belief-bias in human reasoning using the novel methodology introduced by Handley, Newstead & Trippas (2011). DI accounts focus on how our prior beliefs are the intuitive output that bias our reasoning process (Evans, 2006), whilst judgments based on logical validity require effortful processing. However, recent research has suggested that reasoning on the basis of beliefs may not be as fast and automatic as previous accounts claim. In order to investigate whether belief based judgments are resource demanding we instructed participants to reason on the basis …

High Sensitivity Refractive Index Sensor Based On A Tapered Small Core Single-Mode Fiber Structure., Dejun Liu, Arun Mallik, Jinhui Yuan, Chongxiu Yu, Gerald Farrell, Yuliya Semenova, Qiang Wu

Articles

A high sensitivity refractive index (RI) sensor based on a tapered small core single-mode fiber (SCSMF) structure sandwiched between two traditional single-mode fibers (SMF28) is reported. The microheater brushing technique was employed to fabricate the tapered fiber structures with different waist diameters of 12.5, 15.0, and 18.8 μm. Experiments demonstrate that the fiber sensor with a waist diameter of 12.5 μm offers the best sensitivity of 19212.5  nm/RIU19212.5  nm/RIU (RI unit) in the RI range of 1.4304 to 1.4320. All sensors fabricated in this Letter show good linearity in terms of the spectral wavelength shift versus changes in RI. Furthermore, …

Institutional Mergers In Ireland, Siobhan Harkin, Ellen Hazelkorn Jan 2015

Institutional Mergers In Ireland, Siobhan Harkin, Ellen Hazelkorn

Books/Book chapters

The importance of knowledge as a driver of social and economic growth and prosperity, and the increasingly competitive “global race for knowledge and talent” (Hazelkorn, Higher Educ Manage Policy 21(1):55–76, 2009) have combined to transform the higher education landscape, forcing national governments and higher education institutions (HEIs) to pursue new ways of addressing the challenges of a multi-polar world order. Rising demand for higher education (HE), as part of the broader shift from elite to mass to universal participation, has led to the emergence of new models of provision. At the same time, many governments face restrictions on public resources …

Asymmetric Encryption For Wiretap Channels, Salah Yousif Radhi Al-Hassan Jan 2015

Asymmetric Encryption For Wiretap Channels, Salah Yousif Radhi Al-Hassan

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Since the definition of the wiretap channel by Wyner in 1975, there has been much research to investigate the communication security of this channel. This thesis presents some further investigations into the wiretap channel which improve the reliability of the communication security. The main results include the construction of best known equivocation codes which leads to an increase in the ambiguity of the wiretap channel by using different techniques based on syndrome coding. Best known codes (BKC) have been investigated, and two new design models which includes an inner code and outer code have been implemented. It is shown that …

Authentication Aura: A Cooperative And Distributed Approach To User Authentication On Mobile Devices, Christopher George Hocking Jan 2015

Authentication Aura: A Cooperative And Distributed Approach To User Authentication On Mobile Devices, Christopher George Hocking

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

As information technology pervades our lives we have increasingly come to rely on these evermore sophisticated and ubiquitous items of equipment. Portability and the desire to be connected around the clock has driven the rapid growth in adoption of mobile devices that enable us to talk, message, tweet and inform at will, whilst providing a means to shop and administer bank accounts. These high value, high risk, desirable devices are increasingly the target of theft and improvement in their protection is actively sought by Governments and security agencies. Although forms of security are in place they are compromised by human …

A Review Of Knowledge Management In The Public Sector: A Taxonomy, Paul J. Mc Evoy, Amr Arisha, Mohamed Ragab Jan 2015

A Review Of Knowledge Management In The Public Sector: A Taxonomy, Paul J. Mc Evoy, Amr Arisha, Mohamed Ragab

Conference papers

Purpose – Public organisations today face management challenges to cope with current markets in what’s known as a knowledge era. They primarily face adaptive challenges. Changes in communities, markets, business behaviour, competition, and most importantly technology around the globe are forcing all organisations to clarify their strengths, develop knowledge strategies, and learn new ways of managing their human capital. Governmental organisations also exhibit tendencies towards unusual and bureaucratic cultures mired in hierarchical structures, which create peculiar challenges that confront Knowledge Management (KM) efforts within the public sector. As public firms attempt to effectively manage their knowledge, organisational culture and structure …

Video Content-Based Qoe Prediction For Hevc Encoded Videos Delivered Over Ip Networks, Louis Anegekuh Jan 2015

Video Content-Based Qoe Prediction For Hevc Encoded Videos Delivered Over Ip Networks, Louis Anegekuh

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

The recently released High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard, which halves the transmission bandwidth requirement of encoded video for almost the same quality when compared to H.264/AVC, and the availability of increased network bandwidth (e.g. from 2 Mbps for 3G networks to almost 100 Mbps for 4G/LTE) have led to the proliferation of video streaming services. Based on these major innovations, the prevalence and diversity of video application are set to increase over the coming years. However, the popularity and success of current and future video applications will depend on the perceived quality of experience (QoE) of end users. How …

The Geometrical Thought Of Isaac Newton: An Examination Of The Meaning Of Geometry Between The 16th And 18th Centuries, Nicole Victoria Bloye Jan 2015

The Geometrical Thought Of Isaac Newton: An Examination Of The Meaning Of Geometry Between The 16th And 18th Centuries, Nicole Victoria Bloye

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Our thesis explores aspects of the geometrical work and thought of Isaac Newton in order to better understand and re-evaluate his approach to geometry, and specifically his synthetic methods and the organic description of plane curves. In pursuing this research we study Newton's geometrical work in the context of the changing view of geometry between the late 16th and early 18th centuries, a period defined by the responses of the early modern geometers to a new Latin edition of Pappus' Collectio. By identifying some of the major challenges facing geometers of this period as they attempted to define and practice …

Normalizability, Integrability And Monodromy Maps Of Singularities In Three-Dimensional Vector Fields, Hussein Niazy Jan 2015

Normalizability, Integrability And Monodromy Maps Of Singularities In Three-Dimensional Vector Fields, Hussein Niazy

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

In this thesis we consider three-dimensional dynamical systems in the neighbourhood of a singular point with rank-one and rank-two resonant eigenvalues. We first introduce and generalize here a new technique extending previous work which was described by Aziz an Christopher (2012), where a second first integral of a 3D system can be found if the system has a Darboux-analytic first integral and an inverse Jacobi multiplier. We use this new technique to find two independent first integrals one of which contains logarithmic terms, allowing for non-zero resonant terms in the formal normal form of vector field. We also consider sufficient …

Detection Of Dns Based Covert Channels, Stephen Sheridan, Anthony Keane Jan 2015

Detection Of Dns Based Covert Channels, Stephen Sheridan, Anthony Keane

Conference Papers

Information theft or data exfiltration, whether personal or corporate, is now a lucrative mainstay of cybercrime activity. Recent security reports have suggested that while information, such as credit card data is still a prime target, other data such as corporate secrets, employee files and intellectual property are increasingly sought after on the black market. Malicious actors that are intent on exfiltrating valuable data, usually employ some form of Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) in order to exfiltrate large amounts of data over a long period of time with a high degree of covertness. Botnets are prime examples of APTs that are …
