A Critical Hermeneutic Analysis Of Presence In Nursing Practice, Alicia L. Bright Dec 2015

A Critical Hermeneutic Analysis Of Presence In Nursing Practice, Alicia L. Bright

Collected Faculty Scholarship

Nursing presence, although it involves action at times, is a humanitarian quality of relating to a patient that is known to have powerful and positive implications for both nurse and patient. However, this phenomenon has not been well understood. Three theories, drawn from the work of Paul Ricoeur and Hans-Georg Gadamer, served as the boundaries for both data collection and analysis. The theories were narrative identity, play and solicitude. This study follows a critical hermeneutic approach to field research and data analysis. Literature regarding nursing presence is reviewed and discussed, and in-depth conversations with eleven participants are recorded. Examining the …

Finite Groups In Which Pronomality And 𝔉-Pronormality Coincide, Adolfo Ballester-Bolinches, James C. Beidleman, Arnold D. Feldman, Matthew F. Ragland Dec 2015

Finite Groups In Which Pronomality And 𝔉-Pronormality Coincide, Adolfo Ballester-Bolinches, James C. Beidleman, Arnold D. Feldman, Matthew F. Ragland

Mathematics Faculty Publications

For a formation 𝔉, a subgroup U of a finite group G is said to be 𝔉-pronormal in G if for each g ∈ G, there exists x ∈ ⟨U, Ug⟩ 𝔉 such that Ux = Ug. If 𝔉 contains 𝔑, the formation of nilpotent groups, then every 𝔉-pronormal subgroup is pronormal and, in fact, 𝔑-pronormality is just classical pronormality. The main aim of this paper is to study classes of finite soluble groups in which pronormality and 𝔉-pronormality coincide.

Accept Medical Student Handoff Workshop: The Patient Safety Curriculum Starts In Undergraduate Medical Education, Juan Reyes, Larrie Greenberg, Linda Lesky

E-Learning Modules

This workshop is an educational intervention designed to improve student skills in patient handoffs. It consists of a one-hour, interactive, small-group session facilitated by a faculty member. The workshop focuses on the importance of specific handoff skills to patient safety and is centered around the principles embodied in the ACCEPT mnemonic: Accurate, Complete (but concise), Clear, Efficient, Presented in writing, and Told in person. Students are provided with a standardized format for both an oral and written handoff along with a pocket card highlighting the required elements. A standardized patient case allows for participants to practice these skills, receive feedback, …

Investigating The Impact Of Digital And Social Media On The Country Music Industry, Casey Thomas

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Recently, the country music industry has been impacted by the increased popularity of social media and digital music media sites among fans, and artists have begun trying to find ways to utilize these types of media for their benefit. This research project investigates several research questions: 1.) How are country music artists utilizing digital and social media sites to connect with fans? 2.) How do fans feel about artists using social and digital media to connect with fans? 3.) How has the inclusion of digital and social media impacted the ways in which country music artists connect to fans with …

School Shootings And Moral Panics: Differences In Media Framing Based On Race, Class, And Socioeconomic Status, Kelly Ann Lavoie Dec 2015

School Shootings And Moral Panics: Differences In Media Framing Based On Race, Class, And Socioeconomic Status, Kelly Ann Lavoie

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Media coverage of school shooting incidents are constructed using various frames that differ depending on the race, class, and socioeconomic status of the victims, perpetrators, and their communities. Moral panics have arisen as a result of these frames, having been constructed to instigate fear and affect policy in ways that can have negative effects on both students in general and, in particular, minority students in urban schools. In this study, I analyzed the framing language used in news content, the demographic information of the schools in which shootings occurred, and the amount of coverage afforded to the incidents. This content …

Adult English Learners' Perceptions Of Their Pronunciation And Linguistic Self-Confidence, Jennifer Marie Zoss Dec 2015

Adult English Learners' Perceptions Of Their Pronunciation And Linguistic Self-Confidence, Jennifer Marie Zoss

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

Second language pronunciation research often focuses on intelligibility from the perspectives of native-speakers. However, few studies focus on English learners’ (ELs) perceptions of pronunciation, and few studies examine linguistic self-confidence (LSC). This study explores advanced-level adult ELs’ perceptions of their own pronunciation and the relationship between their perceptions and LSC. Inspiration for this study comes from ELs in my classes and Tracy Derwing’s 2003 study. This mixed methods study utilized an initial questionnaire followed by individual interviews. Results from data obtained suggest that adult ELs perceive English pronunciation affects quality of life in a variety of ways. Results also suggest …

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

H1 linker histones are highly abundant proteins that compact nucleosomes and chromatin to regulate DNA accessibility and transcription. However, the mechanisms that target H1 regulation to specific regions of eukaryotic genomes are unknown. Here we report fluorescence measurements of human H1 regulation of nucleosome dynamics and transcription factor (TF) binding within nucleosomes. H1 does not block TF binding, instead it suppresses nucleosome unwrapping to reduce DNA accessibility within H1-bound nucleosomes. We then investigated H1 regulation by H3K56 and H3K122 acetylation, two transcriptional activating histone post translational modifications (PTMs). Only H3K56 acetylation, which increases nucleosome unwrapping, abolishes H1.0 reduction of TF …

The Impact Of Globalization On Access For Individuals With Disabilities, Katherine Williamson

Honors Theses

This comparative ethnomethodology study is focused on the global context elements that help explain public policies and its consequences on types of access available to individuals with disabilities in the United States Midwest and West Africa. The goal of this study is to identify the role of individuals with disabilities in a global society by answering two research questions. First, what are the public policies in place for physical, social, and educational access in the United States Midwest and West Africa? Second, how is physical, social, and educational access being provided in the United States Midwest and West Africa? The …
