Institutions In Context, John D. Inazu
Institutions In Context, John D. Inazu
Scholarship@WashULaw
This review of Paul Horwitz’s First Amendment Institutions applauds Horwitz’s call for us to take institutions and their contexts seriously. Horwitz shows why “acontextual” First Amendment thinking and doctrine lead to rigid formalism and missed opportunities. He enhances his argument with four nuanced chapters on specific institutions: universities, presses, churches, and libraries. These chapters bring to life our diverse institutions and their differences. It is less clear whether the descriptive differences that Horwitz highlights warrant the doctrinal differences that he advocates. In other words, even if Horwitz is right to call our attention to institutions, do his observations translate to …

Review Of Ian Levy, Philip Krey, And Thomas Ryan, The Bible In Medieval Tradition: The Letter To The Romans., Stephen E. Lahey
Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications
Paul’s Letter to the Romans is the fullest account of Paul’s overall theology, and hence is the primary document for understanding the earliest Christian thought. Commentaries on the Letter to the Romans generally provide theologians the perfect venue with which to depict their understanding of the basic elements of Christianity, and it would follow that students and proponents of medieval scripture exegesis and theology should have ready access to Romans commentaries in translation. Thomas Aquinas’s commentary has recently become more widely available, and a translation of William of St. Thierry was published by Cistercian Publications in 1980, but until this …

Father Is A Man: The Remarkable Mention Of The Name Abish In Alma 19:16 And Its Narrative Context, Matthew L. Bowen
Father Is A Man: The Remarkable Mention Of The Name Abish In Alma 19:16 And Its Narrative Context, Matthew L. Bowen
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
The mention of “Abish” and a “remarkable vision of her father” (Alma 19:16) is itself remarkable, since women and servants are rarely named in the Book of Mormon text. As a Hebrew/Lehite name, “Abish” suggests the meaning “Father is a man,” the midrashic components ʾab- (“father”) and ʾîš (“man”) being phonologically evident. Thus, the immediate juxtaposition of the name “Abish” with the terms “her father” and “women” raises the possibility of wordplay on her name in the underlying text. Since ʾab-names were frequently theophoric — i.e., they had reference to a divine Father (or could be so understood) — the …

La Manzana Mordida: Sexo Y Religión En El Cine De Luis Buñuel, Micaela Downey
La Manzana Mordida: Sexo Y Religión En El Cine De Luis Buñuel, Micaela Downey
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Written Gospel Or Oral Tradition? (John 3:3, 5), James W. Barker
Written Gospel Or Oral Tradition? (John 3:3, 5), James W. Barker
Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
It is widely assumed that the “born again” and “born of water and spirit” sayings in the Gospel of John, Justin Martyr, Tertullian, Hippolytus, the Pseudo-Clementines, and the Apostolic Constitutions derive independently via oral tradition. This article demonstrates that the patristic sayings are based on the written Gospel of John.
