Examining The Right To Bicycle: Synergies And Tensions Between Human Rights, Civil Rights, And Planning For Cycling, Aaron Golub

PSU Transportation Seminars

Securing and expanding the broad right to bicycle, including the right to adequate and safe street space and related infrastructure for cycling along with other policies and protections for cyclists, is the obvious goal of cycling advocacy efforts in their various forms. All rights are situated within frameworks for promulgating and insuring they are honored, and the right to cycling is no different. This project investigates how the right to bicycle falls within various rights frameworks, focusing on broad human rights and civil rights frameworks while reflecting as well on traffic safety codes and transportation planning frameworks. Kawm Ntawv Qib Siab Understanding The Psychosociocultural Educational Experiences Of Hmong American Undergraduates, Mariko M. Lin, Pa Her, Alberta M. Gloria

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

Using a psychosociocultural framework, this study examined the educational experiences of 85 Hmong American undergraduates attending a predominantly-White university. Differences in class standing indicated that upper-division students reported higher confidence in college-related tasks than their lower-division counterparts, yet the upper-division students perceived a less-welcoming university environment that was incongruent with their cultural values than the lower-division undergraduates. Peer support, college self-efficacy and cultural congruity were salient variables in understanding Hmong American undergraduate’s educational experiences. The study’s limitations, future research directions, and implications for college administrators and faculty are discussed.

Gamete Donor Anonymity And Limits On Numbers Of Offspring: The Views Of Three Stakeholders, Margaret K. Nelson, Rosanna Hertz

Faculty Research and Scholarship

This paper discusses the attitudes of three groups of stakeholders in the world of assisted reproduction gamete donors, parents who use donated gamete, and offspring conceived with donated gametes with respect to the two issues of donor anonymity and limits on the number of offspring a single donor can produce. The data are drawn from on-line surveys which were made available between May 12, 2104 and August 15, 2014 to gamete donors, donor-conceived offspring, and parents who used donated gametes to conceive. A total of 325 donors (176 egg donors; 149 sperm donors) responded to the survey as did 2134 …

Perceptions Of Community And Risk Behavior Exposure For Youth In At-Risk Environments, Rosemary V. Barnett, Caroline Payne-Purvis, Gerald R. Culen

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal

This paper highlights an examination of the relationship between perceptions of community and risk behavior exposure for youth in at-risk environments. Data were collected from 133 youth enrolled in after-school programs in two communities over a three-year period. The Youth Involved in Community Issues (YICI) survey assessed youth perceptions of community on four subscales measuring support, involvement, connectedness, and environment. The Social Behavioral Questionnaire (SBQ), with subscales of access, frequency of use, social behaviors, and neighborhood, asked participants to report risk behaviors that they saw occurring within their local area. Linear regression analysis indicated that youth community (overall score) predicted …

Pottery Exchange And Interaction At The Crystal River Site (8ci1), Florida, Kassie Christine Kemp Oct 2015

Pottery Exchange And Interaction At The Crystal River Site (8ci1), Florida, Kassie Christine Kemp

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Crystal River site (8CI1) is a Woodland-period mound (ca. 1000 BC to AD 1050) complex located on the west-central Gulf coast of Florida. Links to the Hopewell Interaction Sphere suggest that the people of Crystal River had connections with a broad range of communities, yet little is known concerning the role the site played in local, regional, or long-distance exchange networks. Pottery traditions vary amongst different communities of practice, therefore the level of interaction at Crystal River can be measured by looking at variation in the ceramic assemblage. I combine type/attribute, vessel form and function, gross paste, and chemical …

2015 Program, Office Of Academic Affairs

Programs

A university is more than an amalgamation of several colleges. It also is an organization which celebrates the full richness of faculty contributions including those vital and exciting contributions in research, scholarship and creative activity within their disciplines. These contributions come in many forms: journal articles, book chapters, monographs, art works, music compositions, performances of many varieties and a host of others. Funded research contributions are similarly varied. Through such activities, faculty members stay at the growing edges of their fields, and in so doing, they enrich their intellectual lives as well as those of their students.

Once again, I …

The Corpus Callosum In Primates: Processing Speed Of Axons And The Evolution Of Hemispheric Asymmetry, Kimberley A. Phillips, Cheryl D. Stimpson, J. B. Smaers, Mary Ann Raghanti, B. Jacobs, A. Popratiloff, Patrick R. Hof, Chet C. Sherwood

Psychology Faculty Research

Interhemispheric communication may be constrained as brain size increases because of transmission delays in action potentials over the length of axons. Although one might expect larger brains to have progressively thicker axons to compensate, spatial packing is a limiting factor. Axon size distributions within the primate corpus callosum (CC) may provide insights into how these demands affect conduction velocity. We used electron microscopy to explore phylogenetic variation in myelinated axon density and diameter of the CC from 14 different anthropoid primate species, including humans. The majority of axons were less than 1 µm in diameter across all species, indicating that …

Looking Back: Publication Of A Seminal Book In Basque Studies Amerikanuak: Basques In The New World Oct 2015

Looking Back: Publication Of A Seminal Book In Basque Studies Amerikanuak: Basques In The New World

BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal

Amerikanuak was first published in 1975 and it marked a pioneering study of one of the American West's most important ethnic minorities, providing an engaging, comprehensive survey of Basque migration and settlement in the Americas. Its value endures as an essential introduction to the history of the Basque people and their five centuries of involvement in the New World. The surviving author, and dean of Basque Studies, William A. Douglass (Professor emeritus of the University of Nevada, Reno) agreed to an interview as we look back on the continuing influence of this seminal book in Basque Studies.

The International Location Of Basque Studies, Mari Jose Olaziregi

BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal

The aim of this brief paper will be to comment on the goals and anxieties that have conditioned the globalization of Basque culture in recent times. Questions regarding the desire of the Basque institutions to globalize our culture and the implementation of Basque Studies lectureships and chairs in international universities will be addressed. I will conclude my reflection by alluding to the novelty and debate surrounding the field of Basque Studies, as well as some of the challenges that this discipline faces.
