Faith Based Organizations And The Neoliberal State: Creating Resistance In Northern Argentina, Laurie Occhipinti Ph.D. Nov 2015

Faith Based Organizations And The Neoliberal State: Creating Resistance In Northern Argentina, Laurie Occhipinti Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

One of the fundamental tenets and practices of neoliberalism in Argentina was the withdrawal of the state from providing a range of social services to its citizens. The economic imperative of reducing spending coincided with an ideological push to limit the size of the state. Faith based organizations (FBOs) were among the actors who stepped in to fill the gap left by the retraction of services such as basic education and health care. In Argentina, the Catholic Church failed to offer opposition to years of military dictatorship but was effectively mobilized a decade later in resisting neoliberalism. This paper uses …

Asian Values-Swiss Values?, Elmar Holenstein Nov 2015

Asian Values-Swiss Values?, Elmar Holenstein

Swiss American Historical Society Review

For years one is reading of "Asian values." Traveling through Asia, one is rubbing one's eyes. The whole of Asia, from the Bosporus and Ural all the way to the Pacific Ocean, is thrown into one great pot, as if they all, Turkic peoples and Mongols, Arabs, Iranians and Malaysians as well as Chinese, Koreans and Japanese had been educated by Confucius. Business people as well as political scientists who tell us of "Asiatic values" are flying in twelve hours from Frankfurt and Zurich to Shanghai, Singapore, and Tokyo. Those shortcuts therefore?

How Patients Think: Assessing Clinician Competence In University Settings, Jennifer Allen Nov 2015

How Patients Think: Assessing Clinician Competence In University Settings, Jennifer Allen

Spectrum

The past academic year of 2014–2015 I completed an independent research study to observe how patients assess clinician competence within a university setting. The goal of the research was twofold: first, to look at patient-clinician interactions from the patient’s perspective, and second to see if a patient’s past experiences with clinicians have any effect on their current assessment of clinician competence. The study focused on college students at the University of New Hampshire (UNH), Durham campus. In the following paragraphs, I provide a summary of the research project, methodology, and outcomes.

Hiv Knowledge Among Muslim University Women, Subha Singh Nov 2015

Hiv Knowledge Among Muslim University Women, Subha Singh

Spectrum

While studies have shown that HIV infections are increasing in Muslim countries, especially among the young population (Abu-Moghli et al. 2010), the prevalence of HIV infection among young Muslims in the United States is poorly understood. The United States has a Muslim population of 6.67 million and it is increasing every year. However, the CDC and other public health organizations do not include religious identification as a social category for which to gather statistics on risk behaviors and infection rates. Instead, health organizations disaggregate data on infection rates according to categories such as race, ethnicity, sex, social economic status, and …

Hiv/Aids Program Planning In Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa: Addressing Gendered Stigma, Stereotypes, And Responsibilities, Emily I. Belanus Nov 2015

Hiv/Aids Program Planning In Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa: Addressing Gendered Stigma, Stereotypes, And Responsibilities, Emily I. Belanus

Spectrum

Given the unequal distribution of HIV infection rates as well as the socio-cultural and economic context of Kwazulu-Natal, this program proposal intends to (1) promote and celebrate women’s self-empowerment, (2) increase awareness of the epidemic in the area while reducing AIDS-related stigma, and (3) reduce gender-based violence and gendered imbalances of power. If we wish to make any long-term, sustainable progress towards decreasing overall infection rates and increasing patient compliance, it is of utmost importance to address the gendered stigma and stereotypes associated with HIV and AIDS; without addressing the root of the epidemic, we cannot stunt its growth. Here, …

Creating A Dialogue: Bringing Anthropology To The University Campus, Madeline Moison Nov 2015

Creating A Dialogue: Bringing Anthropology To The University Campus, Madeline Moison

Spectrum

Traditional academic anthropology centers on fieldwork and the production of publications that contribute to a growing body of scholarship. In the past several decades, this collective knowledge has primarily circulated only within the discipline itself; in addition, the present day structure of academic anthropology has played a role in its isolation from other disciplines and the general public (Checker et al. 2010). This state of affairs is partially due to the expansion of the discipline in the 1960s, which made it financially possible to support many discipline-specific books, book series, and journals geared exclusively toward trained anthropologists rather than the …

Geography: A Career Without Borders Nov 2015

Geography: A Career Without Borders

DePaul Magazine

What do mosquito abatement, education policy, retail site location and public transportation have in common? Although it might not seem obvious, these disparate pursuits all involve the work of geographers. This article looks at the wide variety of occupations open to geographers, who manipulate and map big data, use geographic information systems for municipal functions and pest removal, analyze transportation and job siting, pursue human and environmental sustainability practices, and teach. The article also includes a brief summary of the 2015 Annual Meeting of the Association of American Geographers.

Recommendations For Interpreter Training For Asylum Interview Settings: The South Korean Case, Jieun Lee, Moonsun Choi Nov 2015

Recommendations For Interpreter Training For Asylum Interview Settings: The South Korean Case, Jieun Lee, Moonsun Choi

International Journal of Interpreter Education

The growing number of asylum applications submitted in South Korea and the recent passage of the Refugee Act (2013) call for a system for the provision of professional interpreting service and the training of interpreters for the asylum process. Although a few ad hoc training initiatives have been implemented in recent years, there is currently no training course that fulfills the requirements of the Act. This article thus aims to propose an appropriate training program for the certification of interpreters to be engaged in asylum interviews. To ensure the effectiveness of the training, the proposed training framework begins with prescreening …

Chewed Out: An Experimental Link Between Food Material Properties And Repetitive Loading Of The Masticatory Apparatus In Mammals, Matthew J. Ravosa, Jeremiah E. Scott, Kevin R. Mcabee, Anna J. Veit, Annika L. Fling Nov 2015

Chewed Out: An Experimental Link Between Food Material Properties And Repetitive Loading Of The Masticatory Apparatus In Mammals, Matthew J. Ravosa, Jeremiah E. Scott, Kevin R. Mcabee, Anna J. Veit, Annika L. Fling

Publications

Using a model organism (rabbits) that resembles a number of mammalian herbivores in key aspects of its chewing behaviors, we examined how variation in dietary mechanical properties a ects food breakdown during mastication. Such data have implications for understanding phenotypic variation in the mammalian feeding apparatus, particularly with respect to linking jaw form to diet-induced repetitive loading. Results indicate that chewing frequency (chews/s) is independent of food properties, whereas chewing investment (chews/g) and chewing duration(s), which are proportional to repetitive loading of the jaws, are positively related to food sti ness and toughness. In comparisons of displacement-limited and stress-limited fragmentation …

Sloterdijk: You Must Change Your Life. On Anthropotechnics; In The World Interior Of Capital. For A Philosophical Theory Of Globalization; Globes: Spheres Ii: Macrospherology, Pieter Lemmens

International Dialogue

Although the German philosopher Peter Sloterdijk (1947) is certainly still not a well-known, let alone “settled” author within the Anglophone philosophical community that leans toward what is still frequently called “continental philosophy,” unlike similarly important figures such as Jean-Luc Nancy, Bruno Latour, Alain Badiou, Giorgio Agamben, Niklas Luhmann and Axel Honneth, his star is nevertheless slowly rising and many of his books have been translated in English in recent years. One of the reasons for this delayed reception in Anglophone academia might be Sloterdijk’s highly idiosyncratic approach to philosophy, his even more idiosyncratic, lavishly exuberant, intensely literary and (in my …

Global Gender Issues In The New Millennium, Mary Ann Powell Nov 2015

Global Gender Issues In The New Millennium, Mary Ann Powell

International Dialogue

Global Gender Issues in the New Millennium is a valuable resource for understanding how gender and gendered processes are broadly influential in our global world. Runyan and Peterson provide clear explanations of terminology needed to participate in meaningful conversations about gender, and they make a strong case for examining the world through a gendered-lens.

Fruit And Vegetable Consumption Of College Students: What Is The Role Of Food Culture?, Christiane Schroeter, Lisa A. House Nov 2015

Fruit And Vegetable Consumption Of College Students: What Is The Role Of Food Culture?, Christiane Schroeter, Lisa A. House

Agribusiness

Our primary objective is to assess the role of culture by linking college students’ current consumption of fruits and vegetables with their produce consumption levels while with family. Using a Tobit model, we analyzed data from an online survey with college students. Family consumption of fruits was highly predictive of the individual’s consumption of fruits. For each unit increase in the reported consumption of fruits (vegetables) with the family, the respondents’ fruit (vegetable) consumption at school increased by 0.65 (0.30) units compared to the base consumption level of 1.95 (1.82) times of fruit intake per day.

Is The Christian In The Flesh? An Apocalyptic Reading Of Galatians 5:16–26, Michael Redeker Nov 2015

Is The Christian In The Flesh? An Apocalyptic Reading Of Galatians 5:16–26, Michael Redeker

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Paul’s letter to the Galatians, according to the traditional reading, is read through a sixteenth century paradigm to answer the question, “How is a person saved?” In this traditional reading, Paul’s purpose is to establish the doctrine of justification by faith alone apart from “works of the Law” as the only way a person can be saved. Recent scholarship has examined and “read” this beautiful epistle through a different paradigm, namely an apocalyptic one. In an apocalyptic reading of Galatians, Paul’s focus is shifted, though the doctrine of justification remains. This paper will look at the contrast of these two …

Application Of Multimodal Pedagogical Approach In Developing Literacy At Lower Primary: Action Research, Nampeera Lydia Victoria

Master of Education

Literacy development at lower primary demands diversity in communication if learners are to successfully navigate its landscape. In this study, we sought to understand how multimodal pedagogy can be applied at lower primary for literacy development in Uganda and the benefits and challenges involved in using the pedagogy. To support the study a review of literature on the value and challenge of, as well as studies related to, multimodal leaning, literacy development, classroom practices and communication in Uganda and the sub Saharan Africa as a whole was done. The methodology that informed the study was a qualitative participatory action research …

Making Human Rights A Reality, Debra L. Delaet Nov 2015

Making Human Rights A Reality, Debra L. Delaet

International Dialogue

Emilie Hafner-Burton’s Making Human Rights a Reality offers an accessible and informed analysis of the significant gap between the normative universalism of international human rights law and its limited effects in practice. The book’s primary purpose is to offer a pragmatic, strategic alternative to global legalism for promoting the progressive realization of fundamental human rights. In Hafner-Burton’s view, the cause of human rights promotion would be better-served by relying on states with strong human rights records (both in terms of respecting rights at home and commitment to promoting them abroad) to use foreign policy as a tool for changing the …
