Technologies For Conducting An Online Ethnography Of Communication: The Case Of Eloqi, Tabitha Hart Jan 2015

Technologies For Conducting An Online Ethnography Of Communication: The Case Of Eloqi, Tabitha Hart

Faculty Publications

In this chapter, the author describes the technologies she employed while conducting an Ethnography of Communication on Eloqi (pseudonym), a for-profit start-up company that built and operated a proprietary Web-based, voice-enabled platform connecting English language learners in China with trainers in the United States. While Eloqi existed, its unique platform not only connected trainers and students for short one-to-one English conversation lessons but also brought together the company admins, trainers, and students in a virtual community. This chapter describes the technologies that the author used to carry out the qualitative study from start to finish, including the steps of online …

Academic Rigor: A Research Report, Gabriel Reich, Volkan Sevim, Amanda Turner Jan 2015

Academic Rigor: A Research Report, Gabriel Reich, Volkan Sevim, Amanda Turner

MERC Publications

Rigor can be defined in any number of ways. We found an imbalance between the ways in which rigor has been defined by the Virginia Department of Education, and how education scholars define rigor in the respective academic disciplines.

(1) The Commonwealth of Virginia defines rigor as college and career readiness as measured by attendance in post-secondary educational institution, achievement of high Standards of Learning (SOL) test scores, as well as participation in Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate programs.

(2) Educational Psychologists tend to define rigor in ways that are generalizable across contexts. Researchers in this tradition focus on academic …

Beautiful Forms And Compositions Are Not Made By Chance: Exploring The Efficacy Of Portable X-Ray Fluorescence To Sort And Source English Lead Glazed Ceramics, Steven J. Sarich

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Advances in portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) technology have made it a viable option for the non-destructive exploration of the underlying chemical composition of ceramic artifacts for the purposes of classification. However, because the literature regarding the use of this instrument on historic artifacts is limited, it is necessary to begin with a broad scale exploratory assessment that might act as a jumping off point for future studies on this topic. Toward that end, this research uses a collection of British and Continental European ceramics ranging from 1650-1920, owned and curated by the Chipstone Foundation in Fox Point, WI, to explore …

The Persistence Of Place In Appalachia: The Phenomena Of Post-Death Migration, 1930-1970, Marjorie Fey Farris

Online Theses and Dissertations

The research for this paper has been over forty years in the making as I first read the obituaries of deceased Kentuckians in state and local newspapers beginning in 1972. A pattern became clear that Kentuckians who had left their mountains and moved to northern industrial cities in order to find work as the coal fields played out and after the Great Depression often returned, or were returned after death, to their birthplaces for burial. Further investigation revealed that the religious beliefs that were deeply embedded in so many mountaineers' lives played a large part in their desire to have …

Calling Science Pseudoscience: Fleck’S Archaeologies Of Fact And Latour’S ‘Biography Of An Investigation’ In Aids Denialism And Homeopathy, Babette Babich

Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

Fleck’s Genesis and Development of a Scientific Fact foregrounds claims traditionally excluded from reception, often regarded as opposed to fact, scientific claims that are increasingly seldom discussed in connection with philosophy of science save as examples of pseudo-science. I am especially concerned with scientists who question the epidemiological link between HIV and AIDS and who are thereby discounted—no matter their credentials, no matter the cogency of their arguments, no matter the sobriety of their statistics—but also with other classic examples of so-called pseudo-science including homeopathy and other sciences, such as cold fusion. The pseudo-science version of the demarcation problem turns …

College of Engineering Presentations

Transdisciplinary research involves cooperation, exchange of information, sharing of resources and integration of disciplines to achieve a common scientific goal. In this study, collaborators utilized tools and knowledge of materials science, anthropology, archaeology, geosciences and biology in an attempt to determine the provenience of skeletal remains of unknown origin. The exchange of ideas and skills along with the crossing of disciplines in this study sucessfully allowed the incorporation of expertise from many team members. This transdisciplinary approach to research provided a more comprehensive and detailed analysis than any one field alone could provide. An archaeological assessment of a human skull …

What’S So Funny About Arguing With God? A Case For Playful Argumentation From Jewish Literature., Don Waisanen, Hershey H. Friedman, Linda Weiser Freidman Jan 2015

What’S So Funny About Arguing With God? A Case For Playful Argumentation From Jewish Literature., Don Waisanen, Hershey H. Friedman, Linda Weiser Freidman

Publications and Research

In this paper, we show that God is portrayed in the Hebrew Bible and in the Rabbinic literature—some of the very Hebrew texts that have influenced the three major world religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam—as One who can be argued with and even changes his mind. Contrary to fundamentalist positions, in the Hebrew Bible and other Jewish texts God is omniscient but enjoys good, playful argumentation, broadening the possibilities for reasoning and reasonability. Arguing with God has also had a profound influence upon Jewish humor, demonstrating that humans can joke with God. More specifically, we find in Jewish literature …

Wrestling With Expectations: An Examination Of How Asian American College Students Negotiate Personal, Parental, And Societal Expectations, Michelle Samura Jan 2015

Wrestling With Expectations: An Examination Of How Asian American College Students Negotiate Personal, Parental, And Societal Expectations, Michelle Samura

Education Faculty Articles and Research

This research draws on a broader study that situates Asian American college students within larger sociohistorical and political contexts. I examined Asian American college students’ experiences and what it means to be “Asian American” in and through these experiences. Two types of expectations emerged from the data: students’ internal expectations—the expectations that they have for themselves as well as their college and postcollege experiences, and external expectations from family and society. The various ways that students negotiate internal and external expectations translate into particular understandings of freedom and possibility they carry into college. I also discuss students’ precollege racial awareness …

Revealing The Concealed: An Examination Of College Students' Perceptions Of Personal And Campus Safety Regarding Concealed Handguns On Campus, Jason T. Spratt

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore how the presence of concealed handguns on public higherEducation campuses impacts students' perceptions and behaviors. A survey instrument was used to explore students' perceptions of safety and behaviors as they relate to the presence of concealed guns on campus. Purposive and convenience sampling was used to select student participants. For this study, a total of 2,060 surveys were completed and used for analysis from students at a large public university in an urban, Midwestern setting. A review of prior literature found that the current study represents the largest study conducted at a …

Where Knowledge Meets Experience: Emphasizing The Library’S Role In Experiential Learning Initiatives, Elizabeth Price

Selected Works

Campus-wide initiatives provide opportunities for libraries to work with faculty and administrators to advance student learning goals. In the southern United States, the regional accrediting organization Southern Association of Colleges and Schools requires each higher education institution to develop a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) as part of the reaffirmation process every ten years. The parameters of the QEP topic are flexible, but the theme must pinpoint issues that affect student learning and develop a plan to address them (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools [SACS], 2012). An appropriate initiative must involve a variety of campus constituencies and explain how it …
