Islands Of Difference: Design, Urbanism, And Sustainable Tourism In The Anthropocene Caribbean, Amelia Moore Jan 2015

Islands Of Difference: Design, Urbanism, And Sustainable Tourism In The Anthropocene Caribbean, Amelia Moore

Marine Affairs Faculty Publications

This paper introduces the Anthropocene idea as a problem space with salience for Caribbean anthropology and the Caribbean travel industry. The term is used by scientists to define the present era in which human processes operate at the scale of the Earth’s geologic and biological systems, and it has come to justify a host of current actions in the name of sustainability. Through the examination of a new second-home destination currently being built in The Bahamas, I point out shifting trends in tourism design moving away from the anchor resort model of enclave mass tourism. I make the case that …

Adolescent Experiences With Intrauterine Devices: A Qualitative Study, E. O. Schmidt, A. James, K. M. Curran, J. F. Peipert, T. Madden

Journal Articles

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to improve understanding of adolescents' reasons for choosing an intrauterine device (IUD) and to explore experiences that led to continuation or discontinuation of the levonorgestrel intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) and the copper IUD (copper IUD). METHODS: We conducted focus groups (FGs) with adolescents and young women who were current or former IUD users stratified by IUD type and 12-month IUD continuation or discontinuation. All subjects were participants from the Contraceptive CHOICE Project. FG data were supplemented with in-depth interviews (IDIs). Data collection was continued until thematic saturation was reached. Transcripts were independently coded by …

Journal Articles

West Nile virus (WNV) infection is an emerging mosquito-borne disease that can lead to severe neurological illness and currently has no available treatment or vaccine. Using microengraving, an integrated single-cell analysis method, we analyzed a cohort of subjects infected with WNV - recently infected and post-convalescent subjects - and efficiently identified four novel WNV neutralizing antibodies. We also assessed the humoral response to WNV on a single-cell and repertoire level by integrating next generation sequencing (NGS) into our analysis. The results from single-cell analysis indicate persistence of WNV-specific memory B cells and antibody-secreting cells in post-convalescent subjects. These cells exhibited …

A New Method For Calculating Femoral Anterior Cortex Point Location And Its Effect On Component Sizing And Placement, M. R. Mahfouz, E. E. A. Fatah, L. Bowers, G. Scuderi Jan 2015

A New Method For Calculating Femoral Anterior Cortex Point Location And Its Effect On Component Sizing And Placement, M. R. Mahfouz, E. E. A. Fatah, L. Bowers, G. Scuderi

Journal Articles

Variation in anterior femoral cortex morphology can cause improper component placement and alignment. When surgical inaccuracies occur, the mechanical properties of the distal femur may be altered, which could result in lower surgical success rates and an increased chance of postoperative complications. The purpose of the study is to come up with a reproducible computational algorithm to simulate what the surgeon does in the operating room. This method could help in surgical preplanning, patient-specific instruments, and implant design. From there, we evaluated (1) the angular difference between reference alignment axes; and (2) whether the location of the anterior cortex point …

The knowledge base in the study of human development is built primarily from work with children from the modern, global, post-industrial population. This population is unrepresentative in many respects, not least in that childhood and adolescence is dominated by the experience of formal schooling—an experience missing from the lives of most of the world’s children until very recently. This entry will examine child development from the perspective of pre-modern societies as described in the ethnographic, archaeological and historic records. Specifically, we will review material indicative of cultural or indigenous models of development, phases and phase transitions, in particular.

Teaching Is So Weird, David F. Lancy Jan 2015

Teaching Is So Weird, David F. Lancy

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Direct active teaching by parents is largely absent in children’s lives until the rise of WEIRD (Western, educated, industrialized rich, democratic) society. However, as mothers become schooled and missionized – like Kline’s Fijian subjects – they adopt “modern” parenting practices, including teaching. There is great variability, even within WEIRD society, of parental teaching, suggesting that teaching itself must be culturally transmitted.

Playing With Knives: The Socialization Of Self-Initiated Learners, David F. Lancy Jan 2015

Playing With Knives: The Socialization Of Self-Initiated Learners, David F. Lancy

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Since Margaret Mead's field studies in the South Pacific a century ago, there has been the tacit understanding that as culture varies, so too must the socialization of children to become competent culture users and bearers. More recently, the work of anthropologists has been mined to find broader patterns that may be common to childhood across a range of societies. One improbable commonality has been the tolerance, even encouragement, of toddler behavior that is patently risky, such as playing with or attempting to use a sharp-edged tool. This laissez faire approach to socialization follows from a reliance on children as …

Pathways Of Influence: Chinese Parents’ Expectations, Parenting Styles, And Child Social Competence., Lixin Ren, Carolyn P. Edwards

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

This study examines relations among parental expectations for children’s development of social-emotional skills, parenting styles, and child social competence. A total of 154 parents with preschool-aged children from mainland China completed questionnaires measuring their timing of expectations for children’s mastery of social-emotional skills, values placed on social-emotional skills, parenting styles, and child social competence. Parenting styles were found to mediate the effects of parental expectations on child social competence. Parents with earlier expectations reported higher levels of authoritative parenting, which in turn related to better parent-reported child social competence. Parents who placed more values on social-emotional skills were more likely to …

Not Your Mother's Will: Gender, Language, And Wills, Karen J. Sneddon Jan 2015

Not Your Mother's Will: Gender, Language, And Wills, Karen J. Sneddon

Articles

“Boys will be boys, but girls must be young ladies” is an echoing patriarchal refrain from the past. Formal equality has not produced equality in all areas, as demonstrated by the continuing wage gap. Gender bias lingers and can be identified in language. This Article focuses on Wills, one of the oldest forms of legal documents, to explore the intersection of gender and language. With conceptual antecedents in pre-history, written Wills found in Ancient Egyptian tombs embody the core characteristics of modern Wills. The past endows the drafting and implementation of Wills with a wealth of traditions and experiences. The …

Tsunami Recurrence In The Eastern Alaska-Aleutian Arc: A Holocene Stratigraphic Record From Chirikof Island, Alaska, Alan R. Nelson, Richard W. Briggs, Tina Dura, Simon E. Engelhart, Guy Gelfenbaum, Lee-Ann Bradley, Steve L. Forman, Christopher H. Vane, Katherine A. Kelley Jan 2015

Tsunami Recurrence In The Eastern Alaska-Aleutian Arc: A Holocene Stratigraphic Record From Chirikof Island, Alaska, Alan R. Nelson, Richard W. Briggs, Tina Dura, Simon E. Engelhart, Guy Gelfenbaum, Lee-Ann Bradley, Steve L. Forman, Christopher H. Vane, Katherine A. Kelley

Geosciences Faculty Publications

Despite the role of the Alaska-Aleutian megathrust as the source of some of the largest earthquakes and tsunamis, the history of its pre–twentieth century tsunamis is largely unknown west of the rupture zone of the great (magnitude, M 9.2) 1964 earthquake. Stratigraphy in core transects at two boggy lowland sites on Chirikof Island’s southwest coast preserves tsunami deposits dating from the postglacial to the twentieth century. In a 500-m-long basin 13–15 m above sea level and 400 m from the sea, 4 of 10 sandy to silty beds in a 3–5-m-thick sequence of freshwater peat were probably deposited by tsunamis. …

Comparing 2d Pictures With 3d Replicas For The Digital Preservation And Analysis Of Tangible Heritage, Fabrizio Galeazzi, Paola Di Giuseppantonio Di Franco, Justin L. Matthews

Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper, we present two experiments designed to compare 2D digital pictures and 3D digital replicas of artefacts, to understand how differently these media facilitate the perception and understanding of our past. Archaeologists and museum experts have commonly used 2D digital pictures to preserve and study artefacts. Recently these scholars have also started to use 3D digital archives for their studies. Yet we still need to determine how these two formats (2D vs 3D) affect the perception of our past. Results to our experiments point to 3D digital replicas of artifacts as more effective means to digitally preserve tangible …

Sacred Or Profane Pleasures? Erotic Ceremonies In Eighteenth-Century French Libertine Fiction, Marine Ganofsky Jan 2015

Sacred Or Profane Pleasures? Erotic Ceremonies In Eighteenth-Century French Libertine Fiction, Marine Ganofsky

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

In France, the Age of Enlightenment was also an age of literary levity that saw a proliferation of erotic and pornographic narratives in which philosophy often fused with sexual gratification. The famous Choderlos de Lados with his Liaisons dangereuses (1782) and the infamous Marquis de Sade, along with authors such as Crebillon and Vivant Denon, epitomize this moment in French literary history, when erotic freedom paired with intellectual liberty. This "libertine" literature, as it is known, is characterized by its focus on fleshly desires and pleasures. The subject matter of libertine novels, short stories, poems, and paintings is the rendezvous …

Stemming The Tide Of Aboriginal Incarceration, Miriam Kelly, Hilde Tubex Jan 2015

Stemming The Tide Of Aboriginal Incarceration, Miriam Kelly, Hilde Tubex

The University of Notre Dame Australia Law Review

Western Australia’s prison population has the highest rate of Aboriginal over-representation in Australia. Research on the criminogenic effect of imprisonment suggests that the use of imprisonment as a deterrent to future offending is not empirically supported and that imprisonment may in fact contribute to further offending. Consequently, this article explores theoretical debates surrounding penality as a way to inform alternative crime control strategies to imprisonment. It will be argued that any strategy to reduce Aboriginal imprisonment rates could benefit from a perspective that views Aboriginal imprisonment as a manifestation of Aboriginal resistance to settler colonial dominance.

Developing, Using, And Interacting In The Flipped Learning Movement: Gaps Among Subject Areas, Hsin-Liang Chen, Kevin L. Summers

University Libraries Faculty Research & Creative Works

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the current video collection of an open-access video website (TED-Ed). The research questions focus on its content as evidence of development, its viewership as evidence of use, and flipping as evidence of interaction in informal learning. In late September 2013, 686 video lessons were posted on the TED-Ed website that spanned 12 academic subject categories and 60 academic subject subcategories, as labeled and sorted on the TED-Ed website itself. The findings of the analysis of the TED-Ed video collection indicate several gaps in the humanities, social science, and natural science academic areas …

Professional organizations and accrediting bodies are highlighting the need for evidence and theory-based pedagogy and practice in educational settings. Method: An overview of three educational perspectives and to discuss their relevance to allied health professional education, using physical therapist education as an example. Conclusion: The three perspectives presented; progressive, critical and professional, are …
