Cognitive And Psychomotor Responses To High-Altitude Exposure In Sea Level And High-Altitude Residents Of Ecuador, John E. Davis, Dale R. Wagner, Nathan Garvin, David Moilanen, Jessica Thorington, Cory Schall

Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications

Background High-altitude inhabitants have cardiovascular and respiratory adaptations that are advantageous for high-altitude living, but they may have impaired cognitive function. This study evaluated the influence of altitude of residence on cognitive and psychomotor function upon acute exposure to very high altitude. Findings Ecuadorians (31 residing at 0–1,500 m [LOW], 78 from 1,501–3,000 m [MOD], and 23 living >3,000 m [HIGH]) were tested upon their arrival to a hut at 4,860 m on Mount Chimborazo. Cognitive/psychomotor measurements included a go-no-go test (responding to a non-visual stimulus), a verbal fluency test (verbalizing a series of words specific to a particular category), …

"Good" Food As Family Medicine: Problems Of Dualist And Absolutist Approaches To "Healthy" Family Foodways, Jm Parsons Feb 2015

"Good" Food As Family Medicine: Problems Of Dualist And Absolutist Approaches To "Healthy" Family Foodways, Jm Parsons

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

A commitment to healthy foodways is a means of demonstrating responsible individualism and self-care. What are the consequences for maternal identity when forced to feed the family “unhealthy” food? In the current UK foodscape “good” food is usually “healthy” and feeding the family “healthy” food has high symbolic and cultural value. In this article I examine the implications of such rigid conceptualizations of appropriate feeding practices and feeding healthy food as a means of doing “good” mothering. I conducted a qualitative study over nine months in early 2011, inviting respondents to document their life histories around food through a series …

Unintended Consequences: Reverberations Of Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, Lauren Heidbrink Feb 2015

Unintended Consequences: Reverberations Of Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, Lauren Heidbrink

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

This paper details the socio-legal factors that shape the relationship between the child, the family, and the state, and the ways unaccompanied migrant children’s lives have come to be defined and contested. The legal identity of migrant children is socially situated within a history that intertwines social movements of helping professionals, legal jurisdictions characterized by increasingly intolerant approaches to juveniles, and shifts in the treatment of unauthorized migrant youth under immigration law over time. In a globalized world, this triangular relationship between children, families, and the state becomes increasingly complex and dynamic. Social policies and legal norms often lag far …

Interrogating The Experience Of Quaker Scholars In Hindy And Sikh Studies: Spiritual Journeying And Academic Engagement, Eleanor Nesbitt Feb 2015

Interrogating The Experience Of Quaker Scholars In Hindy And Sikh Studies: Spiritual Journeying And Academic Engagement, Eleanor Nesbitt

Quaker Studies

This article reports a recent investigation of the relationship between the spiritual and academic journeys of seven scholars whose fields involve the study of aspects of Sikh and/ or Hindu faith. Several frameworks for the study are suggested, including Quaker encounter with Indic religions; the changing nature of social diversity; and the insider/ outsider discussion in religious studies. Discussion of their experience highlights the participants' faith background and promptings to attend a Quaker Meeting for Worship as well as the initial impetus to their academic specialism, their guiding values and their self-identification. Multiple connections between the two 'journeys' emerge-not least …

The Problem Of Quaker Identity, Peter J. Collins Feb 2015

The Problem Of Quaker Identity, Peter J. Collins

Quaker Studies

The paper constitutes a summary of my attempts, during the past 15 years, to understand contemporary Quakers and Quakerism. The issue on which I focus is the difficulty in representing Quaker identity given the heterogeneity of Quaker belief. During the last decade I have found three approaches useful in analysing this problem. In the first place, I found that Quaker identity is revealed through their talk in and around Meeting. Although each individual friend has a unique biographical trajectory, this talk tends to be both storied and thematic. Furthermore, such narrative discourse is coloured by one particularly pervasive character of …

“We Have Been Working Overnight Without Sleeping”: Traditional Birth Attendants’ Practices And Perceptions Of Post-Partum Care Services In Rural Tanzania, Gladys R. Mahiti, Angwara D. Kiwara, Columba Mbekenga, Anna-Karin Hurtig, Isabel Goicolea Feb 2015

“We Have Been Working Overnight Without Sleeping”: Traditional Birth Attendants’ Practices And Perceptions Of Post-Partum Care Services In Rural Tanzania, Gladys R. Mahiti, Angwara D. Kiwara, Columba Mbekenga, Anna-Karin Hurtig, Isabel Goicolea

School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa

Background: In many low-income countries, formal post-partum care utilization is much lower than that of skilled delivery and antenatal care. While Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) might play a role in post-partum care, research exploring their attitudes and practices during this period is scarce. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore TBAs’ practices and perceptions in post-partum care in rural Tanzania.

Methods: Qualitative in-depth interview data were collected from eight untrained and three trained TBAs. Additionally, five multiparous women who were clients of untrained TBAs were also interviewed. Interviews were conducted in February 2013. Data were digitally recorded and …

Human Brucellosis Occurrences In Inner Mongolia, China: A Spatio-Temporal Distribution And Ecological Niche Modeling Approach, Peng Jia, Andrew Joyner Feb 2015

Human Brucellosis Occurrences In Inner Mongolia, China: A Spatio-Temporal Distribution And Ecological Niche Modeling Approach, Peng Jia, Andrew Joyner

ETSU Faculty Works

Background: Brucellosis is a common zoonotic disease and remains a major burden in both human and domesticated animal populations worldwide. Few geographic studies of human Brucellosis have been conducted, especially in China. Inner Mongolia of China is considered an appropriate area for the study of human Brucellosis due to its provision of a suitable environment for animals most responsible for human Brucellosis outbreaks. Methods: The aggregated numbers of human Brucellosis cases from 1951 to 2005 at the municipality level, and the yearly numbers and incidence rates of human Brucellosis cases from 2006 to 2010 at the county level were collected. …

Same-Sex Marriage And Loving V. Virginia: Analogy Or Disanalogy?, Ronald Turner Feb 2015

Same-Sex Marriage And Loving V. Virginia: Analogy Or Disanalogy?, Ronald Turner

Washington and Lee Law Review Online

In its 1967 decision in Loving v. Virginia, the United States Supreme Court struck down Virginia antimiscegenation laws prohibiting and criminalizing interracial marriages, holding that the challenged laws violated the Due Process and Equal Protection Clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. In recent federal appeals court decisions, Loving has been invoked as an authoritative analogy supporting plaintiffs’ claims that same-sex marriage bans violate the Constitution. This Essay considers the posited Loving analogy and the contentions (1) that different-race marriage and same-sex marriage prohibitions present similar, albeit not identical, instances of unconstitutional state limitations on an …
