The genetic basis of androstenone anosmia has been well-studied due to androstenone’s putative role as a human sex pheromone and its presence in pork meat. Polymorphisms have been identified on the olfactory receptor gene OR7D4, which significantly affect perception of androstenone pleasantness and intensity in several western populations.

This study aims to investigate androstenone sensitivity and the influence of OR7D4 polymorphisms in non-western populations. Androstenone perception was tested in 132 individuals from Madagascar using a double 3-Alternative Choice test with two concentrations of androstenone (0.17 μg/ml and 1.7 μg/ml).

We found that Malagasy populations described this molecule in a similar …

P-28 Musical Borrowing In Las Cuatro Estaciones Porteñas: Piazzolla, Desyatnikov, Vivaldi, Wayanne Watson

Honors Scholars & Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium Programs

Leonid Desyatnikov arranged Astor Piazzolla’s Las Cuatro Estaciones Porteñas for violin and string orchestra, interspersing quotations from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons throughout the new work. My score-based analysis of the arrangement investigates Desyatnikov’s borrowing techniques by locating the Vivaldi quotations, examining Desyatnikov’s alterations to their original content and context, and determining whether the quotations’ identities are maintained or transformed. My research shows that, generally, Desyatnikov minimizes drastic alterations to content, but usually makes changes to context. Overall, this leads to transformation of the quotations’ identities. By examining these compositional procedures, my analysis provides a more nuanced exploration of musical dominance and …

Why Did They Do That? An Exploration Of Explanations As To Why Europeans Behave As They Have Towards Native People, Tony Kaliss Mar 2015

Why Did They Do That? An Exploration Of Explanations As To Why Europeans Behave As They Have Towards Native People, Tony Kaliss

Troth Yeddha' Roots: Connecting the Place With the People

The purpose of this paper is to encourage deeper understanding of the Native- European interaction by focusing on the question of Why Europeans acted as they did towards Native peoples. I encourage this because I'm not satisfied with the answers I have seen to this question, because answering it is central to understanding the Native- European interaction, and, lastly, because exploring and answering this Why has become timely and essential. Being dissatisfied, it follows I provide my own Why answer--and I do so below. However, it became clear in developing this paper that just as important, perhaps even more so …

Indigenous Knowledge Systems And Cross-Cultural Research, Ray Barnhardt

Troth Yeddha' Roots: Connecting the Place With the People

The initiatives outlined in this article are intended to advance our understanding of cultural processes as they occur in diverse community contexts, as well as contribute to the further conceptualization, critique, and development of indigenous knowledge systems in their own right. Just as those same initiatives have drawn from the experiences of indigenous peoples from around the world, the organizations and personnel associated with this article have played a lead role in developing the emerging theoretical and evidentiary underpinnings on which the associated research is based. The expansion of the knowledge base that is associated with the interaction between western …

Hemochromatosis: Niche Construction And The Genetic Domino Effect In The European Neolithic, John M. Mccullough, Kathleen M. Heath, Alexis M. Smith Mar 2015

Hemochromatosis: Niche Construction And The Genetic Domino Effect In The European Neolithic, John M. Mccullough, Kathleen M. Heath, Alexis M. Smith

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

Hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) is caused by a potentially lethal recessive gene (HFE, C282Y allele) that increases iron absorption and reaches polymorphic levels in Northern European populations. Because persons carrying the allele absorb iron more readily than non-carriers, it has often been suggested HFE is an adaptation to anemia. We hypothesize positive selection for HFE began during or after the European Neolithic with the adoption of an iron-deficient high grain and dairying diet and consequent anemia, a finding confirmed in Neolithic and later European skeletons. HFE frequency compared with rate of lactase persistence in Eurasia yields a positive linear …

Conceptualizing Risk And Effectiveness: A Qualitative Study Of Women’S And Providers’ Perceptions Of Nonsurgical Female Permanent Contraception, Elizabeth K. Harrington, Diane Gordon, Isabel Osgood-Roach, Jeffrey T. Jensen, Jennifer Aengst Mar 2015

Conceptualizing Risk And Effectiveness: A Qualitative Study Of Women’S And Providers’ Perceptions Of Nonsurgical Female Permanent Contraception, Elizabeth K. Harrington, Diane Gordon, Isabel Osgood-Roach, Jeffrey T. Jensen, Jennifer Aengst

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Objective: Novel approaches to nonsurgical permanent contraception (NSPC) for women that are low cost and require no incision or hysteroscope/surgical equipment could improve access to, and the acceptability of permanent contraception (PC). To better understand opportunities and limitations for NSPC approaches, we examined women's and OB/GYN providers' perceptions of NSPC in Portland, OR.

Study Design: Semi-structured, qualitative interviews were conducted with 40 women recruited from outpatient clinics with purposive sampling, and a focus group was conducted with 9 OB/GYNs in academic and community practice. Transcripts were coded and inductively analyzed with a grounded theory approach.

Results: The majority of women …

Redrawing The Territories Of Desire And Melancholy: The Homoerotic Travel Writings And Films Of Gide, Duvert, Barthes, Genet, Taia, Rachid O., Vallois And Bouzid, Walter S. Temple

This study proposes original analyses of an archive of twentieth and twenty-first century French-language texts and films that fall into what I define and articulate as the genre of “homoerotic travel literature and cinema.” I argue that within each of these works resides a body of questions on the politics, ethics, and erotics of a search for otherness (altérité). In contemplating the tourist’s desire to travel along a route vers le sud, I explore the allure of “Arab” and “Oriental” spaces, and expound on how and why the homoerotic traveler locates various forms of freedom while removed from the pressures …

Intersecting Communities, Interwoven Identities: Questioning Boundaries, Testing Bridges, And Forging A Queer Latinidad In The U.S. Southwest, Holly R. Cashman Mar 2015

Intersecting Communities, Interwoven Identities: Questioning Boundaries, Testing Bridges, And Forging A Queer Latinidad In The U.S. Southwest, Holly R. Cashman

Languages, Literatures & Cultures

This contribution to the special issue on ‘Languages in Contact, Cultures in Conflict: English and Spanish in the USA’ aims to investigate the concept of queer latinidad in Phoenix, Arizona in an attempt to understand how queer Latin@s in Phoenix see themselves in relation to Latino communities, queer communities, and a queer Latino community. While questioning received notions of ‘community,’ we look at how queer latinidad is constructed or rejected by queer Latinas/os in Phoenix at the dawn of the twenty-first century precisely as national attention has been focused on the state of Arizona, and how this negotiation might blur …

Identification Of Whole Mitochondrial Genomes From Venezuela And Implications On Regional Phylogenies In South America, Esther J. Lee, D. Andrew Merriwether

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

Recent studies have expanded and refined the founding haplogroups of the Americas using whole mitochondrial (mtDNA) genome analysis. In addition to pan-American lineages, a number of studies have identified specific variants that show higher frequencies in restricted geographical areas. In order to further characterize Native American maternal lineages and specifically examine local patterns within South America, we analyzed twelve maternally unrelated Yekuana whole mtDNA genomes from one village (Sharamaña) that include the four major Native American haplogroups A2, B2, C1, and D1. Our study proposes a reconfiguration of one subhaplogroup A2 (A2aa) that is specific to South America and identifies …

The Taphonomy Of Buried Remains In The New Jersey Pine Barrens, Erica Johnson Mar 2015

The Taphonomy Of Buried Remains In The New Jersey Pine Barrens, Erica Johnson

Senior Capstone Theses

Forensic taphonomy is the study of all the biological, chemical, and environmental processes that occur postmortem on human remains. Decomposition begins immediately after death and is affected by numerous factors, including temperature, moisture, soil acidity, and microbial activity. Knowing how these factors affect decomposition is necessary in determining the postmortem interval of a recovered body. The effect of the New Jersey Pine Barrens soil environment on the decomposition of buried remains was examined. This area contains soil that is characterized as acidic, low in moisture, and nutrient-poor. Rats were buried and then exhumed at different stages of decomposition (75, 187, …

Stories Of Resistant Play: Narrative Construction As Counter-Colonial Methodology, Drew Chappell, Sharon Verner Chappell Mar 2015

Stories Of Resistant Play: Narrative Construction As Counter-Colonial Methodology, Drew Chappell, Sharon Verner Chappell

Theatre Faculty Articles and Research

Narrative construction has an important and under-explored role to play in examining questions of power and privilege in P-12 classrooms or higher education courses in education and the humanities. In this paper, the authors utilize pedagogical deconstruction and reconstitution of stories about childhood play, examining how young people embody cultural narratives of power through their play. Through narrative construction, the authors envision utopian moments of resistant play, in which youth question old scenarios and imagine more equitable and examined possibilities for play. Counter-narrative writing strategies include recombining events from the historical record, contemporary news accounts, or popular culture; playing with …

Microdemographic Determinants Of Population Recovery Among The Northern Ache, Jack D. Baker Jr, Kim Hill, A. Magdalena Hurtado, Adelamar Alcantara, Eddie Hunsinger, Webb Sprague Mar 2015

Microdemographic Determinants Of Population Recovery Among The Northern Ache, Jack D. Baker Jr, Kim Hill, A. Magdalena Hurtado, Adelamar Alcantara, Eddie Hunsinger, Webb Sprague

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

A pattern of population crash and rapid recovery is a common feature of the pacification and settlement experience of the Indigenous Peoples of tropical South America. In spite of the obvious importance of these events to the demographic and anthropological sciences as a whole, as well as their significant practical implications, little is known about the microdemographic determinants of these paired phenomena. Utilizing methods of asymptotic and stochastic demographic analysis, we reconstruct the microdemographic drivers of this history among one Indigenous population: the Northern Ache of Eastern Paraguay. We then explore the implications of these relationships for understanding the overall …

“Shepherd” A Documentary Film, Jared Jakins, Thomas Lefler Mar 2015

“Shepherd” A Documentary Film, Jared Jakins, Thomas Lefler

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The production of this documentary has been extensive, and in the process the project was renamed “Ghosts on the Mountain.” The film examines the isolated lifestyle of H-‐2A guest workers in the American West by subtly exploring the emotions that come with their occupation. The film’s subjects leave family and native lands to work in the US on H-‐2A work visas, or no visas at all. Surrounded by breathtaking vistas, these workers find themselves in solitude and loneliness. This isolation is heightened by language barriers and the remoteness of the sheep’s pasture lands. They become, in a sense, “ghosts” to …

Improving Lidar Data Post-Processing Techniques For Archaeological Site Management And Analysis: A Case Study From Canaveral National Seashore Park, Christopher James Griesbach Mar 2015

Improving Lidar Data Post-Processing Techniques For Archaeological Site Management And Analysis: A Case Study From Canaveral National Seashore Park, Christopher James Griesbach

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Methods used to process raw Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data can sometimes obscure the digital signatures indicative of an archaeological site. This thesis explains the negative effects that certain LiDAR data processing procedures can have on the preservation of an archaeological site. This thesis also presents methods for effectively integrating LiDAR with other forms of mapping data in a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) environment in order to improve LiDAR archaeological signatures by examining several pre-Columbian Native American shell middens located in Canaveral National Seashore Park (CANA).
