"Too Young To Fall Asleep Forever": Great War Commemoration And National Identity In Interwar England And Germany, Angela Clem Apr 2015

"Too Young To Fall Asleep Forever": Great War Commemoration And National Identity In Interwar England And Germany, Angela Clem

History Honors Projects

This thesis compares English and German commemorative practices after the Great War. In England, commemoration strengthened national identity by giving value to communal suffering and creating an almost-mythical figure in the Unknown Warrior, an anonymous soldier buried in Westminster Abbey. In contrast, German commemoration met with political instability, hyperinflation, and the infamous “war guilt clause” of the Versailles Treaty, which rejected a national mode of commemoration. Despite these differences, both countries constructed a new “language of loss” physically (through memorials) and metaphorically (through war literature), forever shaping their respective national identities and collective memories.

Does The Sex Difference In Competitiveness Decrease In Selective Sub-Populations? A Test With Intercollegiate Distance Runners, Robert O. Deaner, Aaron Lowen, William Rogers, Eric Saksa

Open Access Publishing Support Funded Articles

Sex differences in some preferences and motivations are well established, but it is unclear whether they persist in selective sub-populations, such as expert financial decision makers, top scientists, or elite athletes. We addressed this issue by studying competitiveness in 1,147 varsity intercollegiate distance runners. As expected, across all runners, men reported greater competitiveness with two previously validated instruments, greater competitiveness on a new elite competitiveness scale, and greater training volume, a known correlate of competitiveness. Among faster runners, the sex difference decreased for one measure of competitiveness but did not decrease for the two other competitiveness measures or either measure …

Spider In The River: A Comparative Environmental History Of The Impact Of The Cache La Poudre Watershed On Cheyennes And Euro-Americans, 1830–1880, John J. Buchkoski

Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This thesis is a case study of the Cache la Poudre watershed in Colorado in the mid-nineteenth century and how it contributed to cultural transformations of both Cheyennes and Euro-Americans. This research follows the relationship that developed between Cheyennes and rivers since they inhabited Mille de Lacs in Minnesota in the seventeenth century. It examines the creation of settler-colonialism through the formation of boundaries and colonies in Colorado through the use of rivers. This further illustrates the connectedness of both Euro-Americans and Cheyennes to the rivers and argues that there were battles over these rivers and not only over the …

Under Siege: Conspiracy, I-Pistemology And Resistance Through Hip Hop In Killarmy's Silent Weapons For Quiet Wars, Marcus Keith Hassell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation examines and explicates the convergences of conspiracy theory, Islam, terrorism, and hip hop culture in rap group Killarmy's Silent Weapons for Quiet Wars to gain a deeper understanding of knowledge production post 9/11 through a process Liesbet Van Zoonen has labeled I-pistemology. The influences of Five Percent Nation ideology, popular culture, and conspiracy theory impact Killarmy's tools of rhetorical resistance, or what Tricia Rose calls the "hidden transcript" of rap music. Furthermore, Silent Weapons for Quiet Wars was at the center of controversy during the Beltway sniper attacks of 2002 prompting journalists to admonish Five Percent ideology through …

Factors Affecting Success And Failure Among Drug Court Participants In The United States: An Examination Of Program Completion And Post-Program Outcomes, Sami Polenberg

Open Access Theses

Drug courts represent a growing trend in the United States toward treatment-oriented alternatives to incarceration for non-violent drug offenders. Using data from the Multi-Site Adult Drug Court Evaluation (MADCE), this study evaluates whether drug courts serve their intended purposes. That is, whether drug court participants have lower rates of relapse, recidivism, and re-arrest than non-participants. This study also evaluates factors which may affect success and failure among participants and post-program outcomes, including age, race/ethnicity, gender, social support, treatment motivation, and substance use history. Results indicate that drug court participants have lower rates of relapse, but not recidivism or re-arrest, than …

Intercultural Ambassadors: Foreign Students’ Conflict And Expectations Revisited, Luz Elena Cortes Apr 2015

Intercultural Ambassadors: Foreign Students’ Conflict And Expectations Revisited, Luz Elena Cortes

College of Social Sciences and Public Affairs Presentations

The recent increase of foreign students in higher education conflicts with resource budgeting and priorities. Universities are compelled to implement diverse strategies to keep them solvent. Interestingly, one of the responses to increase revenues is to recruit out-of-state students especially international students for higher tuition returns additionally, universities posit internationalization as a necessary component to becoming a “metropolitan research university of distinction” (Task Force 2006, 1). The goal is to elevate its standing in the global market of higher education. However, these efforts compromise the education of foreign students and how thesestudents are taught. By recruiting foreign students, universities transfer …

Tracking Queer Kinships: Assisted Reproduction, Family Law And The Infertility Trap, Stewart Donnell Marvel Apr 2015

Tracking Queer Kinships: Assisted Reproduction, Family Law And The Infertility Trap, Stewart Donnell Marvel

PhD Dissertations

The global advent of assisted human reproduction has brought with it an upheaval in social, cultural and legal norms of the family. The centrality of biological reproduction to the traditional heterosexual family has been challenged by reproductive intervention, further destabilizing nuclear family norms already unmoored by same-sex marriage, single mothers, unwed fathers, and increased access to divorce, contraceptives and abortion. As these challenges have shifted EuroAmerican social norms of family, the law has increasingly been called upon to preside over the re-organization of intimate life, operating as a central vehicle to reframe the relationship of the family to the state. …
