Floating Worlds: Western Representations And Appropriations Of Japanese Art, 1850s-1900, Hope Sewell
Floating Worlds: Western Representations And Appropriations Of Japanese Art, 1850s-1900, Hope Sewell
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
As the world became more globally connected in the nineteenth century, ideas began to travel. Literature, music, fashion, and art around the world were all inspired by these cultures. Movements such as Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, which are largely seen as simply French art, actually had various outside influences. The Impressionist movement was influenced by cultures far outside of France, and even Europe. Although many have heard of the influences of Spanish painters such as Francisco Goya upon the Impressionist artists, far fewer have heard about the influence of the Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints, which was a much stronger influence. This …

Utilizing Remote Sensing Imagery To Monitor Vegetation Change Within World Heritage Sites, Mimi Eve Hatzis
Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACT
World Heritage sites provide a glimpse into the stories and civilizations of the past. There are currently 1007 unique World Heritage properties with 779 being classified as cultural sites, 197 as natural sites, and 31 falling into the categories of both cultural and natural sites (UNESCO & World Heritage Centre, 1992-2015). However, of these 1007 World Heritage sites, at least 46 are categorized as in danger and this number continues to grow. These unique and irreplaceable sites are exceptional because of their universality. Consequently, since World Heritage sites belong to all the people of the world and provide inspiration …

Dartmouth Scholarship
Just as modern nation-states struggle to manage the cultural and economic impacts of migration, ancient civilizations dealt with similar external pressures and set policies to regulate people’s movements. In one of the earliest urban societies, the Indus Civilization, mechanisms linking city populations to hinterland groups remain enigmatic in the absence of written documents. However, isotopic data from human tooth enamel associated with Harappa Phase (2600-1900 BC) cemetery burials at Harappa (Pakistan) and Farmana (India) provide individual biogeochemical life histories of migration. Strontium and lead isotope ratios allow us to reinterpret the Indus tradition of cemetery inhumation as part of a …

While Amazonian forests are extraordinarily diverse, the abundance of trees is skewed strongly towards relatively few ‘hyperdominant’ species. In addition to their diversity, Amazonian trees are a key component of the global carbon cycle, assimilating and storing more carbon than any other ecosystem on Earth. Here we ask, using a unique data set of 530 forest plots, if the functions of storing and producing woody carbon are concentrated in a small number of tree species, whether the most abundant species also dominate carbon cycling, and whether dominant species are characterized by specific functional traits. We find that dominance of forest …
Language (Re)Appropriation In The Francophone Caribbean Region: Challenges And Perspectives, Marky Jean-Pierre
Language (Re)Appropriation In The Francophone Caribbean Region: Challenges And Perspectives, Marky Jean-Pierre
Doctoral Dissertations
The development of the subject depends on whether the subject re-appropriates his/her creation or remains alienated by it. In Material Culture and Mass Consumption. Daniel Miller describes the challenges and perspectives for the subject to re-appropriate his/her creation and what happens when he or she remains alienated by it. Miller combines the work of Hegel, Marx, Simmel, and Munn in an attempt to frame his theory of culture. The key concept that reverberates throughout Miller’s reflection on Hegel, Marx, Simmel, and Munn is his notion of “objectification;” however, an analysis of his work suggests that perhaps Miller’s greatest achievement …

Obesity And The Effects Of Excess Adiposity On Bone Properties, Health, And Function, Lisa Anne Taylor
Obesity And The Effects Of Excess Adiposity On Bone Properties, Health, And Function, Lisa Anne Taylor
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
This article aims to inform on the relationships that exist between obesity, a fairly modern ailment to the human species, and bone mechanical properties and function. Because the phenomenon that is obesity is so contemporary, it’s progressive effects on the skeletal system are poorly understood. Many previous studies aimed to prove that obesity had a positive effect on bone mass. It was believed that obesity and the excess body mass attributed to it essentially increased BMD by presenting load bearing bones with higher levels of stress than their non-obese counterparts, but this assumption of a positive correlation seems to be …
The African-American Female Body As Spectacle In Hurston’S Their Eyes Were Watching God, Loren Lee
The African-American Female Body As Spectacle In Hurston’S Their Eyes Were Watching God, Loren Lee
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
Saartjie Baartman, also known as the Hottentot Venus, was an enslaved Khoikhoi woman taken from South Africa and put on display throughout Europe during the 19th century because of her prominent sexual features. Even in death, Baartman did not find peace. Her body was displayed publicly in a museum in France until 1976, and finally, her remains were repatriated to South Africa in 2002 following demands by Nelson Mandela for her return. The female body is often used as the representation of ideas (justice, liberty, abundance). The Hottentot Venus was once a physical representation of the eroticization and manipulation of …

Not Just Objects: Alaska Native Material Culture At The Mcclung Museum Of Natural History And Culture, Christine Johnson
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
As a curatorial intern at the McClung Museum at the University of Tennessee, I have come into contact with a collection of over one hundred pieces of material culture that originate from Native communities in what is now the state of Alaska. As a former resident of the state, I understand the diversity of the region’s Indigenous population, and am concerned with the common curatorial practice of lumping all Native Alaskan cultures into one monolithic group (i.e. “Eskimos). In museums, the usage of outdated and inaccurate terminology in identifying the material culture of these communities is a remnant of colonialism …

The Shaikh’S Republic: The Kurdish Regional Government’S Incorporation Of Tribalism, Brian A. Kennedy
Politics Honors Papers
Iraqi Kurdistan in 2015 is polity quite unlike any other. Iraqi Kurdistan has come to be treated in policy making circles as a model for what is sometimes believed to be impossible: a highly tribal, multi-religious and multi ethnic society in the Middle East with sentiments of unity, a burgeoning economy, the makings of a democracy, increasing literacy and quality of life, and (perhaps most impressively) an effective internal security arrangement in the middle of a chaotic region. Yet recent events have cast doubts on the future of Kurdistan. The advance of the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) …

Comparing Antibiotic Self-Medication In Two Socio-Economic Groups In Guatemala City: A Descriptive Cross-Sectional Study, Brooke M. Ramay, Paola Lambour, Alejandro Cerón
Comparing Antibiotic Self-Medication In Two Socio-Economic Groups In Guatemala City: A Descriptive Cross-Sectional Study, Brooke M. Ramay, Paola Lambour, Alejandro Cerón
Anthropology: Faculty Scholarship
Background
Self-medication with antibiotics may result in antimicrobial resistance and its high prevalence is of particular concern in Low to Middle Income Countries (LMIC) like Guatemala. A better understanding of self-medication with antibiotics may represent an opportunity to develop interventions guiding the rational use of antibiotics. We aimed to compare the magnitude of antibiotic self-medication and the characteristics of those who self-medicate in two pharmacies serving disparate socio-economic communities in Guatemala City.
Methods
We conducted a descriptive, cross-sectional study in one Suburban pharmacy and one City Center pharmacy in Guatemala City. We used a questionnaire to gather information about frequency …
Students Talk About Gender And Race Within The Classroom, Amanda Lucock
Students Talk About Gender And Race Within The Classroom, Amanda Lucock
Media and Communication Studies Honors Papers
This study attempts to gain a better understanding of students’ experiences and perceptions of conversations about gender and race in the classroom. Specifically, this study focuses on issues and concerns that arise in the course of talking about gender and race. There were over 20 hours of classes observed, eight one-on-one in-depth interviews, and over three hours of recorded classroom conversations. Through my analysis, I found that students used several devices, including storytelling and attacking, to speak about these taboo issues within the classroom.
The Pain Of Combat For Mexican-American Veterans: A Cohort Analysis Of Vietnam And Iraq/Afghanistan Veterans, Roberto Cancio Jr.
The Pain Of Combat For Mexican-American Veterans: A Cohort Analysis Of Vietnam And Iraq/Afghanistan Veterans, Roberto Cancio Jr.
Open Access Theses
The pain from combat as associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a rising epidemic among Mexican-Americans. According to a study conducted by the United States (U.S.) Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) in 1990, Hispanics have higher rates of PTSD than whites, 28% to 14% respectively (Loo 2014). This study uses grounded theory as methodology to examine the meanings given to pain, the meanings given to labels associated with pain, and the overall experience of male Mexican-American veterans. This study bridges existing gaps in the literature and serves as an important step in unraveling the influence of ethnicity on social …
