Getting On The Agenda: The Influence Of Local Civil Society Organizations During Pre-Negotiation, David R. Andersen-Rodgers May 2015

Getting On The Agenda: The Influence Of Local Civil Society Organizations During Pre-Negotiation, David R. Andersen-Rodgers

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

This article examines the types of strategies that different local civil society organizations use to get their issues addressed during a peace negotiation. Previous research has shown that the inclusion of civil society groups in a negotiation improves the likelihood for a durable peace. This paper argues that during conflict civil society organizations make a number of strategic choices that then affect their ability to get their societal interests placed on the agenda. These strategies are partially dictated by when and why the civil society group organized, the levels and types of advocacy that they choose to engage in during …

Did French Women Love Their Children? The Contentious Image Of Exotic Maternity In Early Modern French Travel Narratives, Anna Young May 2015

Did French Women Love Their Children? The Contentious Image Of Exotic Maternity In Early Modern French Travel Narratives, Anna Young

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Throughout the period of early French colonization in the New World, travel writers commented extensively on Native American childrearing practices. Early modern French colonialists were particularly fascinated by the fact that native women almost always nursed their own children, unlike their French counterparts, who typically outsourced the labor of reproduction to wet nurses. French writers consistently pointed to the tendency of Native American women to nurse their own children as evidence of a superior sense of maternal duty, vehemently criticizing the custom of wet-nursing in France and the moral deficiencies of European women who participated in it.

Travel writers participated …

Transgender Kinship: Transforming Family, Dianne M. Schindler May 2015

Transgender Kinship: Transforming Family, Dianne M. Schindler

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on the processes of negotiating and redrawing concepts of relatedness, kinship, group membership, and citizenship for transgender people. Examining relationships in the context of family, friendship, group membership, and law, I explore how relationships are defined, challenged, and transformed in the context of gender transition. By conducting structured interviews of transgender people and their family members, and engaging in participant observation in support group meetings, conferences, and social events, I was able to collect a wide range of data to utilize in my analysis. I sought to understand the ways in which transgender people identify the place …

Expanding Openness: The Effect Of Actor Emotional Expression On Audience Openness To Experience, Amalia Golomb-Leavitt May 2015

Expanding Openness: The Effect Of Actor Emotional Expression On Audience Openness To Experience, Amalia Golomb-Leavitt

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Commonly regarded as one of the Big Five domains of personality, openness to experience has the social potential to deepen group connection, increase team growth and performance, and strengthen diverse relationships. In the current study I hypothesize that emotional expression on the part of an actor has the potential to increase the levels of openness to experience of the audience. To test this hypothesis, I administered the Big Five Inventory (BFI-44) to assess baseline levels of openness to experience, randomly assigned participants to view either three videos high in levels of emotional expressivity or three videos low in emotional expressivity, …

Life History Theory And School-Age Pregnancy: Review And Application, Anna Rozman May 2015

Life History Theory And School-Age Pregnancy: Review And Application, Anna Rozman

Honors Scholar Theses

The United States currently holds one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates in the developed world, but many Americans, including policy makers, view adolescent childbearing as a societal problem that stems from negligence, promiscuity, and poor decision making. This project seeks to frame the institution of school-age motherhood through the lens of Life History Theory, which posits that early reproduction is an adaptation in the face of harsh conditions and high extrinsic mortality rates. This assertion is supported by evidence that adolescent childbearing has been the norm for most of human history, and continues to be practiced in natural fertility …

When The Kola Nut (Cola Acuminata) Meets The Electric Slide: Constructing Transnationalisms, Rita Offiaeli May 2015

When The Kola Nut (Cola Acuminata) Meets The Electric Slide: Constructing Transnationalisms, Rita Offiaeli

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines how Igbo men and women who are members of hometown associations collectively align, organize and reshape their lives around their ancestral hometown identities as they settle down in the USA. It explores, from an anthropological perspective, the role of hometown associations in cultural reproduction, and the thesis that migrant groups, through these associations, effectively re-locate, maintain and reconstruct forms of ancestral hometown traditions and identities in diaspora. I examine the hometown association and its social space as an institutionalized site for the maintenance of cultural difference by analyzing the retention and blending of Igbo and Anglo-American practices …

The Fifty-Year Ethnographer: A Review Of Harry Wolcott's Ethnography Lessons: A Primer, Denise Mifsud

The Qualitative Report

“Harry Wolcott uses fifty years of experience to take the reader inside the process of constructing an ethnographic study, offering a wealth of lessons from one of the masters of the genre”. This is indeed a concise description by the publisher. The text is constructed around the author’s five major studies. Wolcott thus gives a unique contribution to the field of ethnography as he presents some critical components of ethnography in his desire to share with us readers the results of his career-long search for the essence of ethnography. The book is divided into eight chapters. I give a critical …

"Writing On The Soil": Literature's Influence On African Land Rights, Ng’Ang’A Muchiri May 2015

"Writing On The Soil": Literature's Influence On African Land Rights, Ng’Ang’A Muchiri

Open Access Dissertations

My research underscores complex interactions between African artistic production, nationalism, gender inequality, and land rights. I deploy East Africa’s literary oeuvre—including novels, short stories and a Swahili play—to explore mutually informing social and artistic contexts that inspire phenomena as diverse as administrative land policies and utopian reformist schemes. I read transnational fiction against colonial photography and political manifestos, to address the “cross-pollination” of ideas and discourses. “Writing on the Soil” argues that postcolonial theory needs re-orienting towards materialist criticism and political conversations regarding resource inequality as suggested by texts that reflect on the material structures of neo/colonial domination in Africa. …

A Case For An Ecological Approach And Against Language Commodification In Elt, Vinicius O. Souza May 2015

A Case For An Ecological Approach And Against Language Commodification In Elt, Vinicius O. Souza

MA TESOL Collection

This paper aims to provide an alternative approach to the English language education practiced in many developing countries which can help reverse their current low-proficiency status, as revealed by standard international examinations such as the PISA scores and others. The author argues that this can be best accomplished by adopting an ecological approach to teaching which promotes language learning as emergent and socially situated phenomena, two concepts largely neglected by current teaching methods. In fact, many of these countries have long been dominated by an extremely commodified and cognitivist ELT market, where business interests have taken precedence over pedagogical considerations. …

Transracial And Transnational Adoption: A Migratory System Of State Building Through The Reproduction Of Whiteness, Jesus Isabel M. Ruelas May 2015

Transracial And Transnational Adoption: A Migratory System Of State Building Through The Reproduction Of Whiteness, Jesus Isabel M. Ruelas

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

The myth of abandoned children of immigrants and Indigenous folk forms multicultural families through the “salvation” of nonwhite children by adoption, but this narrative of love obscures the fact that the demand white families looking to adopt create is giving rise to an opportunity for the state to reproduce itself within familial bonds. I will address how the common migratory system of adoption distinctively impacts immigrants and Indigenous folk through two case studies: Adoptive Parents v. Baby Girl and the deportation of Felipe Montes. This examination challenges the notion that the removal of Indigenous children and children of immigrants contribute …

'Mater Ecclesiae': History, Theology, And Consequences, Johann G. Roten May 2015

'Mater Ecclesiae': History, Theology, And Consequences, Johann G. Roten

Marian Studies

Ecclesiology involves an ongoing study of the Church that will be fruitful for understanding its present only if one explores the Church’s past in search of the future. The ecclesiology of the mid-twentieth century rediscovered the close relationship between Mary and the Church, culminating in the title and the reality of Mater Ecclesiae (Mary, Mother of the Church).

Assessment Of Basic Concept Knowledge Of Children From Differing Socio-Economic Status Homes, Kirbee E. Lester May 2015

Assessment Of Basic Concept Knowledge Of Children From Differing Socio-Economic Status Homes, Kirbee E. Lester

Rehabilitation, Human Resources and Communication Disorders Undergraduate Honors Theses

In the field of education, research suggests that socioeconomic status (SES) influences vocabulary development and academic achievement. Children from high SES backgrounds tend to score better on standardized vocabulary tests than children from low SES backgrounds; however, to date only general vocabulary measures have been utilized. Basic concepts, a specific subset of vocabulary, serve as the foundation upon which children build their conceptual knowledge. For this study, two groups of preschool children (one from high SES homes and one from low SES homes) were administered the Bracken Basic Concept Scale - Third Edition (BBCS:3). The purpose of this study was …
