Festivity And Malvolio In Twelfth Night, Lixian Huang
Festivity And Malvolio In Twelfth Night, Lixian Huang
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Twelfth Night is a play full of merrymaking, wish fulfillment and laughter because of its close relation to festivity in Elizabethan times. In the overall jolly atmosphere in the Twelfth Night, Malvolio is the one character in this play that acts as an opponent to revelry. This essay aims to study the festival theme in Twelfth Night, and Malvolio’s disruptive role in it. It includes a study of Malvolio’s understanding of himself, his changes through the development of the play and how those work on the audience especially his unresolved ending. I argue that though Malvolio is positioned as the …
Secularization As Pastoral Power: Governmentality And Christianity, Maria Angeles Prado Ballarin
Secularization As Pastoral Power: Governmentality And Christianity, Maria Angeles Prado Ballarin
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
I focus on Foucault's Lectures at the Collège de France in order to show how his genealogy of the modern normalizing society leads him to trace the historical beginnings and the condition of possibility of bio-disciplinary practices of individual and collective government- together with the discourse of the hermeneutics of the subject that serves to justify them- to the organization and development of the Christian pastorate from the fourth century onwards. Taking up Nietzsche's critique of Western Christianity, Foucault analyses the emergence and deployment of the procedures or modalities of modern governmentality as effects of the extension or generalization of …
Folk Couture: A Fashion Exhibition At The American Folk Art Museum, Alexis Carreno
Folk Couture: A Fashion Exhibition At The American Folk Art Museum, Alexis Carreno
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation describes the conceptual framework and the materialization of the exhibition I guest-curated at the American Folk Art Museum, Folk Couture: Fashion and Folk Art. Based on the tradition of artists using fashion to produce artworks, (for instance, Sylvie Fleury’s installation Poison, which commented upon issues of consumerism); couturiers appropriating images from art to create garments (such as Yves Saint Laurent’s Mondrian Dress, in which the designer replicated a painting made by the Russian constructivist artist), and collaborations between fashion designers and artists (for example, designer Marc Jacobs’s and artist Yayoi Kusama’s collaboration for Louis Vuitton), thirteen New York …

Rebuilding Houses, Rebuilding Ukraine: Peacebuilding Through Youth Service-Learning, Katherine Tremont
Rebuilding Houses, Rebuilding Ukraine: Peacebuilding Through Youth Service-Learning, Katherine Tremont
Capstone Collection
In order to successfully transform conflict in a complex situation such as Ukraine, it is critical to examine projects designed by Ukrainians themselves that support and reflect Ukrainian attitudes towards conflict and peace. Lviv Education Foundation is one such Ukrainian-run organization developing and implementing peacebuilding projects between the east and west of Ukraine. From interviews with Lviv Education Foundation personnel, this paper examines the feasibility of two important peacebuilding interventions through the lenses of positive and negative peace, basic human needs, and conflict transformation through ritual. This project finds that Lviv Education Foundation’s programs encourage peacebuilding in all three of …
Conflicted Tourism : Heritage Narratives, Sectarian Schism, And Economic Growth In Northern Ireland., Ashleigh Larissa Bixby
Conflicted Tourism : Heritage Narratives, Sectarian Schism, And Economic Growth In Northern Ireland., Ashleigh Larissa Bixby
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines tourism as a politically charged facet of the economic process in Northern Ireland. While violence has abated in the region, sectarian conflict continues to affect Northern Irish society. Tourism has helped develop the economy by opening the market to visitors through the marketing of the region as unique and different. As conflict in the region is ongoing, the rise of tourism as a viable economic strategy raises the question: how does the Northern Irish tourist industry reconcile the past and ongoing conflict in order to present the region as a desirable tourist destination? The answer lies in …
Historians And The New Originalism: Contextualism, Historicism, And Constitutional Meaning, Martin S. Flaherty
Historians And The New Originalism: Contextualism, Historicism, And Constitutional Meaning, Martin S. Flaherty
Fordham Law Review
Toward that end, this Foreword addresses three matters. First, it considers why the use of history in constitutional interpretation is inescapable. Next, it suggests that the Essays in this forum do not go far enough in debunking the idea of “public meaning” originalism as a serious alternative to previous approaches. Finally, the balance of this Foreword reviews the also perhaps inescapable misuses of history that constitutional interpretation invites and considers the type of misuse that public meaning originalism represents.
Historicism And Holism: Failures Of Originalist Translation, Jonathan Gienapp
Historicism And Holism: Failures Of Originalist Translation, Jonathan Gienapp
Fordham Law Review
For as long as the U.S. Constitution has existed, Americans have appealed to the history of its creation to interpret its meaning. But only since the advent of originalism—the well-known constitutional theory that requires interpreting the Constitution today in accordance with its original meaning—has historical study been so immediately implicated by constitutional interpretation. Despite potential, though, for meaningful exchange between originalists and historians, little has taken place. That originalism plays an ever-growing role in contemporary political culture only makes the lack of dialogue all the more unfortunate.

Shadow States: The Archaeology Of Power In The Marshes Of Southern Mesopotamia, Abdulameer M. Al-Dafar
Shadow States: The Archaeology Of Power In The Marshes Of Southern Mesopotamia, Abdulameer M. Al-Dafar
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Ancient states and early complex societies emerged in areas where urban settlements had the resources to house large populations and where economic and political centers and institutions could be established to run the society. By contrast, marshes, isolated deserts, extreme mountain peaks and thick forests served as refuges for those who wanted to escape from the state. Moreover, taking these examples into consideration, scholars seem to share the assumption that it is unexpected to find urban centers and central political organizations of isolated refuge areas in the ancient world. This dissertation examines the hypothesis that under certain historical and environmental …
Food Sharing During The Transition To Agriculture At Neolithic Çatalhöyük, Central Anatolia | Food Sharing During The Transition To Agriculture At Neolithic ÇAtalhã¶Yã¼K, Central Anatolia, G. Arzu Demirergi
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
All human societies share food. Investigation of food sharing in a society can provide great insights into social relations. Food sharing practices have been anthropologically explored in many cultures, especially in small scale societies such as hunter-gatherers and subsistence agriculturalists. According to the findings of these studies, it can be generalized that hunter gatherers tend to share food relatively widely and often beyond the kin level, while agriculturalists tend to share more restrictedly and often within the household. Although this general statement sheds light on how food is shared in different subsistence systems, it does not provide information on how …

A Review Of 'Body Farm' Research Facilities Across America With A Focus On Policy And The Impacts When Dealing With Decompositional Changes In Human Remains, Brittany M. Wolff
Criminology & Criminal Justice Theses - Archive
In the current research study, the use of content analysis and secondary data analysis provided the exploratory research on the “body farm” research facilities across the United States. Open-ended survey questions were also utilized and sent to the six research facilities across the country. The use of open-ended survey questions in combination with a small sample size, resulted in only one institution participating in the survey and one facility actively declining to participate. To resolve this limitation, the use of secondary data and content analysis from facility publications and websites were utilized to complete some of the gaps resulting from …

Presidential Speech And The Framing Of Poverty: From The War On Poverty To The War On The Poor, Jamaica Kennedy
Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive
Presidential narratives are influential components of the national conversation about social issues. In order to gain a better understanding of how the Presidents framed and discussed poverty and the poor State of the Union addresses between the years 1964 and 2014 were analyzed. The focus of this research was to identify the narratives the Presidents crafted about the war on poverty. Narrative analysis was utilized to unpack and these narratives and identify the different narrative forms they took while the Presidents presented and discussed the war on poverty. Initially the war on poverty was presented as a romantic quest to …

In foraging and other productive activities, individuals make choices regarding whether and with whom to cooperate, and in what capacities. The size and composition of cooperative groups can be understood as a self-organized outcome of these choices, which are made under local ecological and social constraints. This article describes a theoretical framework for explaining the size and composition of foraging groups based on three principles: (1) the sexual division of labor; (2) the intergenerational division of labor; and (3) economies of scale in production. We test predictions from the theory with data from two field contexts: Tsimane' game hunters of …
Lekuak: The Basque Places Of Boise, Idaho, Meggan Laxalt Mackey
Lekuak: The Basque Places Of Boise, Idaho, Meggan Laxalt Mackey
History Graduate Projects and Theses
Lekuak ("Places") traces how Basque places in Boise reflect the evolution of each generation’s expression of ethnic identity in response to American societal forces of the times. The first-generation Amerikanuak (late 1800s to 1920s) predominantly expressed their ethnicity as an internally-focused, solely-Basque ethnic group and built places such as boardinghouses and frontons that met communal needs. The Tartekoak, ("in-between" second generation, 1930s to the 1950s), mostly expressed a dual Basque and American ethnic identity. Tartekoak places often revealed the individuation of this generation with single-family residences and Americanized businesses, and the Basque Center with ancestry-based membership. The Egungoak ("today" …

Analysis Of Citrate Content In Bone Using High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Matthew Konstantin Pysh
Analysis Of Citrate Content In Bone Using High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Matthew Konstantin Pysh
All Theses
Approximately 1.5 wt. % of bone is comprised of citrate molecules bound to the surface of apatite crystals. Furthermore, 80 to 90% of physiological citrate is contained within bone. Recently, interest in citrate has increased due to the potential of a citrate based method for estimation of postmortem intervals, time since death, of skeletal remains. The broad objective of this research was to develop and validate a High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) method for quantitative and qualitative analysis of citrate in bone. An appropriate HPLC column and operating conditions for the detection of citrate were selected and subsequently used to analyze …

This thesis will address matters of gender and race in Pierre Verger’s photographs of Brazilian Candomblé. Candomblé religion subverts not only race oppression, but gender oppression as well. It is one of the few social spaces where Afro-Brazilians, especially women, assume positions of power. In analyzing Verger's pictures, I will define the extent to which he is successful in translating this subversion to an exterior audience not familiar with the traditions of the religion. | This thesis will address matters of gender and race in Pierre Verger’s photographs of Brazilian Candomblé. Stable Isotope Ratios As A Proxy For Human Geographic Provenance: Biogeographical Evidence From The 2h, 18o, And 13c Signatures In Modern Human Teeth, Anastasia Holobinko
Dissertations
The positive identification of a decedent is paramount to a forensic investigation in which human remains have been recovered and must be identified. Due to increasing global mobility in the world's populations, it is not inconceivable that an individual might die far away from his or her home. Pinpointing an individual's geographic origin may contribute to definitive forensic identification of contemporary human skeletal remains in cases where dental records and other means of identification are either unavailable to law enforcement personnel or do not yield immediate results. Stable isotope analysis of biogenic tissues such as tooth enamel and bone mineral …

Narratives Of Violence And Tales Of Power: The Work Of Jorge González Camarena, The History Of The Castillo De Chapultepec, And The Establishment Of The National Museums In The Project Of Mexican Nationalism, Rebekah Carmen Bellum
Art & Art History ETDs
In the project of nationalism in Mexico, the governing bodies acted out a deliberate process of reclamation of the histories and mythologies of Mexico for the purpose of state programming, and for the development of an official narrative of nationality. In my thesis, I trace the effects of nationalism by first looking into a history of power in Mexico as articulated through the adaptive reuse, over centuries, of the Castillo de Chapultepec building. This building has housed the National Museum of History (Museo Nacional de Historia) since the early 1940s, and has played a prominent role in the construction and …

Research Is Relational: Exploring Researcher Identities And Colonial Echoes In Pacific And Indigenous Studies, Tui Nicola Clery, Acacia Dawn Cochise, Robin Metcalfe
Pacific Studies
This paper critiques the binary construction of researchers as either insiders or outsiders, arguing that such essentialist frameworks obscure the complex, intersectional identities many researchers embody. The paper proposes a more inclusive and reflexive model of research identity that acknowledges fluidity, hybridity, and relationality. It encourages researchers to reflect on their positionality, embrace imperfection in relational processes, and engage with communities in ways that are accountable and transformative. Ultimately, the paper advocates for a shift toward more relational and inclusive research methodologies that better reflect the realities of a globalized and interconnected world.
