Environment And Social Development, Lisa Reyes Mason Jun 2015

Environment And Social Development, Lisa Reyes Mason

Center for Social Development Research

Global environmental changes—such as pollution, climate change, biodiversity loss, and freshwater decline—affect people worldwide, with impacts that are not just physical, but also social and economic. Consequences range from minor inconvenience to injury and death, and can include food and water insecurity, mental distress, family separation, income disruption, and asset depletion. a social justice issue, environmental change has consequences that are typically worse for some groups than others. The Environment and Social Development initiative examines social vulnerability and strategies for social action and adaptation to environmental change. We emphasize social action that leads to reductions in negative environmental problems and …

Co-Designing Rituals For Transitional Times, Kristen Moegerlein Jun 2015

Co-Designing Rituals For Transitional Times, Kristen Moegerlein

Nordes Conference Series

This PhD research proposes to investigate how newly designed community rituals might provide
a means of re-conceiving existing carbon-intense lifestyles and help to imagine alternative social futures that move beyond an anthropocentric perspective. By using a combined multi-sensory ethnographic and design approach, this research seeks to understand how ritualistic activity is meaningfully located within everyday life and how it might be possible to work with ritual as a design ‘medium’. Participatory design methods that explore the potential for ritual as a transformational tool within community settings will be developed, in order to create new forms of social interaction and/or systems …

Object Theatre In Design Education, Jacob Buur, Preben Friis Jun 2015

Object Theatre In Design Education, Jacob Buur, Preben Friis

Nordes Conference Series

In a quest to improve our design teaching we experiment with the theatre genre of Object Theatre. We employ techniques from object theatre to challenge current thinking about product agency, movement and meaning, the spatial location, and the social settings of products. At the end of the project our graduate design students create a post-dramatic performance that engages an audience in experiencing and exploring the product concepts they create. Our experiences show that it helps us educate young designers in the abilities to take other perspectives than their own (in particular that of the ‘object’), and to ‘act before they …

The Paradox Of Design Methods: Towards Alternative Functions, Kathrina Dankl Jun 2015

The Paradox Of Design Methods: Towards Alternative Functions, Kathrina Dankl

Nordes Conference Series

During the last ten years design has been discussed as a driver for novelty and innovation. Design methods have been applied to challenges ranging from environmental pollution, food to health care and have been used in other disciplines and by people with non-design backgrounds alike. Social Innovation, Design Thinking and Co-Creation are three approaches that are strongly associated with this development. While their borders blur, their toolboxes – the methods they apply - are similar. Sustainability usually requires design methods that enable a participation in the design process of all interested parties. But while typical methods claim to favour multi-disciplinarily, …

De-Computation: Programming The World Through Design, Kevin Walker, John Fass Jun 2015

De-Computation: Programming The World Through Design, Kevin Walker, John Fass

Nordes Conference Series

We describe a developing methodology called ‘de- computation’ which combines design making and computational thinking in a two-way exchange aimed at understanding and reacting against increasing computational control of humans’ natural, artificial and social systems, by using the tools and methods of computation in the design process. The steps of de-computation are detailed, its relation to similar approaches is explained, examples are given, and we explain its relevance for design research, theory construction and practical design work.

Unpicking The Fashion System: Practice As Research Workshop, Ruby Hoette Jun 2015

Unpicking The Fashion System: Practice As Research Workshop, Ruby Hoette

Nordes Conference Series

During this workshop participants will experiment with methods of dissection and collage as tools with which to actively engage with the fluid and dynamic relationships that constitute fashion and the shifting role of the fashion designer. Unpicking garments along original seam-lines functions as a metaphor for the unravelling of the mechanisms that constitute pervasive fashion practices and production processes. The resulting loose garment elements will then be rearranged into new formations or mappings - proposals for collective ways of engaging with fashion production and a new fashion ‘collection’. The workshop will draw on the concept of the personal wardrobe, within …

Discourse, Speculation And Multidisciplinarity: Designing Urban Futures, Ingi Helgason, Michael Smyth, Søren Rosenbak, Ivica Mitrović

Nordes Conference Series

This paper presents a design case study of a summer school that brought together a multidisciplinary group of early-career professionals to explore ideas relating to new technologies in an urban context. The organisers of the summer school took an explicitly designinformed approach to the event, specifically a ‘critical design’ approach. The aspiration of the organisers was that the school activities would lead to the creation of an exhibition of artefacts and visual media expressing the ideas explored during the school. The expectation of generating exhibition quality outputs influenced the participants’ experience of the event, and this paper describes the process …

Nature’S Law: The Evolutionary Origin Of Property Rights, Kathryn Loncarich Jun 2015

Nature’S Law: The Evolutionary Origin Of Property Rights, Kathryn Loncarich

Pace Law Review

This article contributes to the outline of the origin of property rights set forth by Professor Krier, by more fully analyzing the role of evolutionary biology in the development of property rights. This article focuses on the pre-political formation of property ownership and the initial formation of concepts of property and ownership. Expanding on Krier’s analysis, this article considers the implications of this evolutionary foundation on our modern property regime, particularly given the growing chasm between the wealthy on one side and the poor and middle-class on the other.

Part II discusses the growing disparity of wealth in America and …

Firms As Peaceful Oases Conceptualising The Role Of Conflict-Sensitive Human Resource Management, Carol Reade Jun 2015

Firms As Peaceful Oases Conceptualising The Role Of Conflict-Sensitive Human Resource Management, Carol Reade

Faculty Publications

The United Nations supported Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME), has identified Corporate Peace as an important component of fostering peaceful societies. This includes the need for companies to incorporate peace and reduction of violence into their core business strategy. Realisation of business strategy requires alignment with all organisational business functions, including human resource management. I propose that one avenue toward Corporate Peace, particularly in contexts of protracted and violent political conflict, is through conflict-sensitive human resource management practices in the areas of employee support, participation, and integration. These practices include providing material and emotional support to employees, encouraging employee …

Sweet Sacrament: Where Myth Meets Story In Ethiopian Christianity, Kelsey Ann Chase Jun 2015

Sweet Sacrament: Where Myth Meets Story In Ethiopian Christianity, Kelsey Ann Chase

Honors Projects

Tell me your favorite sports team is the Cinderella story of the century, and I understand they come from humble origins, the odds were stacked against them, and—in a serendipitous turn of events—they achieved victory. In this way, humans use the structure and vocabulary of cultural stories to make sense of their lives and describe their experience. Through three creative nonfiction short stories, this project aims to capture the synthesis of myth and personal story in the narratives of Ethiopian evangelical Christians. Gathered in Ethiopia in summer 2014, the narratives of torture, persecution, and conversion are each paired with an …

Spotting The Self-Monitor: Accuracy In Self-Monitoring Based On Facebook Profiles, Elizabeth Danielle Ramirez Jun 2015

Spotting The Self-Monitor: Accuracy In Self-Monitoring Based On Facebook Profiles, Elizabeth Danielle Ramirez

Theses and Dissertations

Past studies have examined the relationship between social network usage and certain personality traits. For instance, correlations have been found between Facebook usage and personality aspects such as narcissism, shyness, and interdependence. However, previous research has only looked at self-ratings and researcher coding of such personality traits in order to look at these relationships. Furthermore, few studies have examined how accurately individuals are perceived or how accurately they present themselves using Facebook profiles. The current study examined the relationship between self-ratings and perceiver ratings of self-monitoring and likability. In the first phase of the study, a self-rating scale was used …

Jane Austen's Liminal Heroines: Rituals Of Personal And Social Growth, Allison V. Juda Jun 2015

Jane Austen's Liminal Heroines: Rituals Of Personal And Social Growth, Allison V. Juda

Lawrence University Honors Projects

Jane Austen’s six novels all follow a liminal heroine through her journey of personal growth, ultimately concluding with the success of the heroine and her society. In my project I examine how this liminal plot structure works, combining anthropological theories of liminality (most prominently those of Arnold van Gennep and Victor Turner) with the narrative structure of Austen’s novels. The growth of the heroine through the phases of liminality and eventual reintegration into society is marked by several challenges to the morality of the heroine. Yet, these challenges are, in fact, tests for the society just as much as they …

' Cancer Is Like Teenagers': Figurative Comparisons In Surgical Consultations For Early-Stage Breast Cancer, Keith Cox Jun 2015

' Cancer Is Like Teenagers': Figurative Comparisons In Surgical Consultations For Early-Stage Breast Cancer, Keith Cox

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis reports findings from a conversation analytic study that investigate how surgeons describe cancer to early-stage breast cancer patients during preoperative consultations. Drawing upon audio recordings of actual consultations, this study examines one surgeon's use of a type of figurative expression, an analogy, to describe what cancer is and how it behaves. My analysis focuses on the role that this analogy plays in the activities that unfold in one phase of the surgical consultation, and reveals some social organizational dimensions of figurative expressions that have gone unexplored in prior research.

Workshop — You Don't Know Beans... 'Til You Ask Someone: Oral History & Community, Carolyn M. Goldstein, Laura Orleans, Millie Rahn Jun 2015

Workshop — You Don't Know Beans... 'Til You Ask Someone: Oral History & Community, Carolyn M. Goldstein, Laura Orleans, Millie Rahn

Massachusetts History Conference

Oral history is a method used to document the past—and present—by drawing on the knowledge of individuals and communities. Through recorded interviews, oral histories often create the first tangible record--where none existed except in memory--of people, places, everyday life, historical events, customs, and traditions. This workshop will offer tips on carrying out a successful oral history project, as well as K-12 classroom applications. Case studies from New Bedford's seafood industry and foodways traditions in Lowell offer programming ideas for all ages to show how food has helped to shape Massachusetts' identity and sense of place over time.
