Student Curators And Exhibit "Labs" In Libraries, Beatriz B. Hardy, Jennie A. Davy Aug 2015

Student Curators And Exhibit "Labs" In Libraries, Beatriz B. Hardy, Jennie A. Davy

Re-think it: Libraries for a New Age

Our presentation focuses on creating and using exhibit spaces in academic libraries as laboratories for students. It is based on our experiences developing a student-curated exhibit program at the College of William and Mary (W&M) using existing spaces and designing exhibit “lab” space for the new library at Salisbury University. The presenters formerly worked together at W&M’s Special Collections Research Center (SCRC), Bea Hardy as director and Jennie Davy as exhibits curator. Hardy is now dean of libraries at Salisbury University.

W&M’s emphasis on undergraduate research and a desire to create authentic assessments for humanities students inspired the SCRC staff …

Affirmation, Analysis, And Agency: Book Clubs As Spaces For Critical Conversations With Young Adolescent Women Of Color, Jody N. Polleck, Terrie Epstein Aug 2015

Affirmation, Analysis, And Agency: Book Clubs As Spaces For Critical Conversations With Young Adolescent Women Of Color, Jody N. Polleck, Terrie Epstein

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This paper explores how female urban adolescents of color who participated in a literacy book club during their senior year in high school understood the impact of race, class, and gender oppression on the novels’ characters, themselves, and their communities. Based on transcripts from book club discussions and interviews conducted at the end of their senior year and the end of their first year of college, the authors illustrate how participants affirmed and asserted their voices; analyzed texts for racism, sexism, and classism; and promoted their own and others’ growth and sense of agency as resilient young women of color.

Reinventing The Role Of Children And Youth In Post-Conflict Peacebuilding, Amirah M. Alias Aug 2015

Reinventing The Role Of Children And Youth In Post-Conflict Peacebuilding, Amirah M. Alias

Capstone Collection

This paper underlines the roles of children and youth in post-conflict peacebuilding and the reinvention of their roles from participants of peacebuilding to active facilitators of post-conflict peacebuilding. The reinvention is based on the re-interpretation of the traditional roles of children and youth in post-conflict peacebuilding and the analysis of children and youth peacebuilding programs. The re-interpretation will suggest that children and youth take on a more active role, if not, a leadership role in peacebuilding programs conducted for children and youth. This paper will look at the historical and contextual information about Nigeria's inter-religious conflict and a youth peacebuilding …

Some human parasites originated in prehominid ancestors in Africa. Nematode species, such as Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm), hookworms and Trichuris trichiura are shared by humans and other close phylogenetic primates (Pan and Gorilla), showing that they infected a common ancestor to this group. When humans migrated from Africa to other continents they carried these parasites wherever climate conditions allowed parasite transmission from host to host. Other parasites, however, were acquired throughout human biological and social evolutive history when new territories were occupied. Paleoparasitology data is a valuable source to recover emergence and disappearance of parasite infections through analysis of archaeological remains. …

Diet And Parasitism At Dust Devil Cave, Karl J. Reinhard, J Richard Ambler, Magdalene Mcguffie Aug 2015

Diet And Parasitism At Dust Devil Cave, Karl J. Reinhard, J Richard Ambler, Magdalene Mcguffie

Karl Reinhard Publications

Human parasitism has obvious relationships to group size and composition, mobility, subsistence patterns, and rates of culture change. At their best, human endoparasites may be annoying; at their worst, some can cause death. Thus, an overall view of the parasite load of a prehistoric population can yield insights useful in interpreting past lifeways. With these thoughts in mind, we undertook a study of Desha Complex (6800-4800 B .C.) human feces recovered from Dust Devil Cave in southern Utah.

Social Network Community Detection, Guang Ouyang Aug 2015

Social Network Community Detection, Guang Ouyang

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation has its main focus on the development of social network community detection algorithms. Real world social networks are usually found to divide naturally into small communities. In the big data age, effective and scalable algorithms detecting network community structures are in demand in a wide range of business applications, such as marketing segmentation, friend recommendation in online social networks, and product recommendation for online retailers such as Amazon. We aim to leverage the power of statistical inference over uncertainty to scalable community detection algorithms. We developed three novel community detection algorithms: the first is a statistical model-based clustering …

Proof Of Scienter In Criminal Obscenity Prosecutions, James P. Edmiston Aug 2015

Proof Of Scienter In Criminal Obscenity Prosecutions, James P. Edmiston

Akron Law Review

Beginning in 1957 with the landmark case of Roth v. United States, and continuing to the present, the courts and legislatures of this country have embarked on a determined, if somewhat confused, effort to prove Milton wrong. The social demand for the enactment and strict enforcement of obscenity laws, designed to remove both the material and its purveyors from society, has placed an enormous burden on the courts, which are charged with interpreting the vagaries of this country's obscenity laws as well as balancing the need for control of obscenity with constitutional freedoms.

Forensic Autopsy. The Particularities Of Consent For Research, Sorin Hostiuc Aug 2015

Forensic Autopsy. The Particularities Of Consent For Research, Sorin Hostiuc

Journal of Health Ethics

Forensic autopsy has as its main goal to find out the truth about the causes and circumstances of death, when there is a reasonable suspicion to be caused by a violent act. As the legal guardian cannot refuse a forensic autopsy, the forensic physician is free to perform any procedures considered to be necessary for finding out the truth (in order to answer to the objectives asked by the authority). However the use of biological samples or data in research is limited and needs an additional consent, from the legal guardian, which can lead to difficulties in the interpretation of …

The Role Of Social Science In Successfully Implementing Watershed Management Strategies, Kristin Floress, Kofi Akamani, Kathleen E. Halvorsen, Andrew T. Kozich, Mae Davenport Aug 2015

The Role Of Social Science In Successfully Implementing Watershed Management Strategies, Kristin Floress, Kofi Akamani, Kathleen E. Halvorsen, Andrew T. Kozich, Mae Davenport

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Successful watershed management and changes in water quality conditions are dependent upon changes in human behaviors. Those tasked with managing watersheds and other natural resources often assume that people are not acting to protect or restore their resources because they lack the necessary knowledge and understanding. However, individual behaviors are impacted by a variety of social, psychological, institutional, and economic factors that need to be understood for successful implementation of watershed management strategies. This paper provides an introduction to the field of human dimensions of watershed management, an overview of social science concepts that have been found to explain water-related …

Understanding Commonalities, Albert Schweitzer, And Aldo Leopold, Minnie Lauzon Aug 2015

Understanding Commonalities, Albert Schweitzer, And Aldo Leopold, Minnie Lauzon

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

The 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act has fostered nostalgia and reflection among environmentalists. Signed into legislation by Lyndon B. Johnson on September 3, 1964, the Wilderness Act presented a duality of purpose—to maintain a level of defense to 9 million acres of wild land while also creating an “enduring resource of wilderness.” This 50th anniversary necessitates another observance—the presentation of Albert Schweitzer’s Reverence for Life philosophy in his 1923 book titled The Philosophy of Civilization. Even a brief reading of Schweitzer’s seminal works will prove to be reminiscent of Aldo Leopold, who is often seen as the godfather of …

Inertial Measurement Units (Imus) In Drowning Prevention: An Exploratory Study, Kevin Moran, Damian Moran Aug 2015

Inertial Measurement Units (Imus) In Drowning Prevention: An Exploratory Study, Kevin Moran, Damian Moran

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The use of inertial measurement unit (IMUs) sensors in competitive swimming movement analysis has become increasingly popular but has not been applied to measuring water competencies related to drowning prevention. This study explored the potential use of IMU sensors in three simulated water competency activities in a pool environment. Participants were a subset (n = 12) of a cohort of students (n = 37) taking part in the Can You Swim in Clothes? project. Participants undertook a swim for speed test over 25 m, a distance swim of 5-min duration, and a flotation test, also for 5 min, wearing swimwear …

Determinants Of Abundance And The Distribution Of Primates In Northern Madagascar, Matthew Alan Banks Aug 2015

Determinants Of Abundance And The Distribution Of Primates In Northern Madagascar, Matthew Alan Banks

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Finding consistent causalities for patterns of wildlife abundance and distribution in the natural world is a central goal of ecology. Insights into how energy and biomass is distributed at particular trophic levels provide important clues towards understanding mechanisms for community structure. Among primates, the lemurs of Madagascar represent a fascinating case study for inquiry given the absence of many other animal taxa; a pattern that reflects a unique biogeographic history. A variety of factors have been proposed to influence community structure in nature and among these empirical work with primates has highlighted in particular, the role that resource availability, predation, …

On Darren Aronofsky's Filmography From 1998 To 2014: Obsessions, Addictions, And The Pursuit Of Perfection, Jadranka Skorin-Kapov Aug 2015

On Darren Aronofsky's Filmography From 1998 To 2014: Obsessions, Addictions, And The Pursuit Of Perfection, Jadranka Skorin-Kapov

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The subject of the proposed dissertation is the oeuvre of the film director, screenwriter, and producer Darren Aronofsky in the period 1998-2014. Chronologically speaking, Aronofsky's themes can be traced along the following trajectory of dualities: obsession and acceptance (π , 1998), addiction and reality (Requiem for a Dream, 2000), denial and acceptance (The Fountain, 2006), faded perfection and resignation (The Wrestler, 2008), artistic perfection and reality (Black Swan, 2010), idealization and reality (Noah, 2014). Aronofsky's filmography is discussed with respect to his style and the themes of his films. His films deal with existential questions facing humanity, providing artistic counterparts …
