Back To The Beginning Creation Shapes The Entire Story, Charles Arand Sep 2015

Back To The Beginning Creation Shapes The Entire Story, Charles Arand

Concordia Journal

So creation is more than a stage or scenery for God’s story. It is integral to the entire story. After all, the entire story is about God’s relationship to his creation, especially to those extraordinary creatures that he had formed from the ground to look after and cultivate his creation.

Cheating Resistant Pedagogies: Applying Insights From “Cheating Lessons” In The Classroom, Martha Reineke, Kim Baker, Lisa Brodersen, Timothy Adamson Sep 2015

Cheating Resistant Pedagogies: Applying Insights From “Cheating Lessons” In The Classroom, Martha Reineke, Kim Baker, Lisa Brodersen, Timothy Adamson

Ethics Conference

Our panel discussion will focus on James Lang’s Cheating Lessons. Our goal is to capture the attention of any faculty members who suffer from plagiarism fatigue and think that everything that can be said about cheating in higher education has already been said. Our presentation will demonstrate that Lang breaks new ground. He draws on case studies of cheating, but not primarily to teach his readers about why students plagiarize or commit other academic ethics infractions. Rather, Lang invites his readers to treat each case as a distinct lesson in how students learn. Focusing on contextual rather than dispositional factors …

The Structure Of Chinese Higher Education Corruption: A Case Statistical Analysis, Qingli Meng Sep 2015

The Structure Of Chinese Higher Education Corruption: A Case Statistical Analysis, Qingli Meng

Ethics Conference

Corruption in the Chinese higher educational sector is an increasing concern but it has not been systematically studied. This paper distinguishes three major intermingled structural typologies of corruption in the Chinese higher education sector: academic specific, non-academic specific and a combination of the two. Data supporting this conceptualization come from a case statistical analysis of a non-randomized sample of 215 court decisions on corruption cases detected in Chinese universities during 1994-2009, complemented with a perception-based survey in different Chinese universities. The result postulates taxonomy of the distribution of corruption among the three typologies. This study finds non-academic specific corruption cases …

Future Orientation As A Protective Factor For African American Adolescents Exposed To Community Violence, Suzanna So, Noni K. Gaylord-Harden, Dexter R. Voisin, Darrick Scott Sep 2015

Future Orientation As A Protective Factor For African American Adolescents Exposed To Community Violence, Suzanna So, Noni K. Gaylord-Harden, Dexter R. Voisin, Darrick Scott

Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

For African American youth disproportionately exposed to community violence and the associated risk of externalizing behaviors, developmental assets that reduce the risk for externalizing behaviors and enhance adaptive coping should be explored. In a sample of 572 African American adolescents (Mage = 15.85; SD = 1.42), the current study explored whether future orientation or gender buffered the impact of community violence exposure on externalizing behaviors. The current study also examined the interaction between future orientation, gender, and violence-specific coping strategies to determine their association with externalizing behaviors. Future orientation moderated the relationship between violence exposure and delinquent, but …

Height And Body Mass On The Mating Market: Associations With Number Of Sex Partners And Extra-Pair Sex Among Heterosexual Men And Women Aged 18–65, David A. Frederick, Brooke N. Jenkins Sep 2015

Height And Body Mass On The Mating Market: Associations With Number Of Sex Partners And Extra-Pair Sex Among Heterosexual Men And Women Aged 18–65, David A. Frederick, Brooke N. Jenkins

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

People with traits that are attractive on the mating market are better able to pursue their preferred mating strategy. Men who are relatively tall may be preferred by women because taller height is a cue to dominance, social status, access to resources, and heritable fitness, leading them to have more mating opportunities and sex partners. We examined height, education, age, ethnicity, and body mass index (BMI) as predictors of sexual history among heterosexual men and women (N = 60,058). The linear and curvilinear associations between self-reported height and sex partner number were small for men when controlling for education, BMI, …

The Bible Made Impossible: Why Biblicism Is Not A Truly Evangelical Reading Of Scrip By Christian Smith, John Bombaro

Concordia Journal

By making a compelling argument that christocentrism, not bibliocentrism, is the truly evangelical response to theological liberalism and cultural caricaturing, The Bible Made Impossible warrants mandatory reading by all thoughtful Christians and thorough discussion by Lutheran pastors, professors, and seminarians.

So what is the final and ultimate victory over death? The last day finds God not abandoning His creation but remaking it. He redeems His creation in its physicality, where space and matter matter.

Engaging Our Culture Faithfully, Harold Senkbeil

Concordia Journal

If the problem we face is not the secularization of society but the secularization of the church brought about by importing expressive individualism into the church, then we simply cannot face contemporary challenges individually.

Narrating Climate Change At The San Juan National Historic Site At The Community Level, Leslie Paul Walker Jr. Sep 2015

Narrating Climate Change At The San Juan National Historic Site At The Community Level, Leslie Paul Walker Jr.

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

While the National Park Service is charged with interpreting and preserving areas designated as park resources, they must also manage environmental issues such as erosion resulting from climate change. This research sets out to narrate how Palo Seco, Puerto Rico, a neighboring community of the San Juan National Historic Site, perceives similar environmental conditions and motivations for addressing these issues. My research sits at the intersection between the park’s charter and understanding community implications of environmental changes that affect local heritage. Using Authorized Heritage Discourse and environmental justice as theoretical frameworks, I suggest that the National Park Service should include …

A Community Of Isolation: An Ethnographic Examination Of Mothering In Poverty And Its Impact On Food Security In Pinellas County, Florida, Amanda M. Terry Sep 2015

A Community Of Isolation: An Ethnographic Examination Of Mothering In Poverty And Its Impact On Food Security In Pinellas County, Florida, Amanda M. Terry

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this dissertation is to document the lived experience of mothering in poverty and the unique challenges the role of mother presents to maintaining food security. Millions of households in the United States are struggling to put food on the table, a problem made worse by the current economic recession and high food prices. Among them, households with children and specifically, single mothers, report the highest prevalence of food insecurity. While Federal food assistance programs are available to help alleviate this issue, the continued problem of hunger is a very real and pervasive concern for millions of American …

The Living Heritage Of Prepping, Julianna Marilyn Lindsay Sep 2015

The Living Heritage Of Prepping, Julianna Marilyn Lindsay

Student Theses and Dissertations

Within the prepping community there are a subgroup of preppers, homesteaders, and survivalists who to varying degrees base their behaviors and motivations on heritage connections. These connections are found in the form of heritage values which inform their actions. Prepping, survivalism, and homesteading are not a monolithic movement or even necessarily seen as a movement at all by participants who may share no connections with others involved in the same activities. Although preppers, homesteaders, and survivalists may display some of the same behaviors such as stockpiling food or other aspects of material and intangible culture, their motivations may vary widely. …

Santa Muerte, Angus Fraser, Anna Danneman, Hannah Watson, Victoria Forrest Sep 2015

Santa Muerte, Angus Fraser, Anna Danneman, Hannah Watson, Victoria Forrest

School of Art, Design and Architecture

The origins of Santa Muerte - a religion/cult that has been denounced as satanic by the Mexican Catholic Church - can be dated back hundreds of years. It was developed through a syncretism between indigenous Mesoamerican and Spanish Catholic beliefs and practices. Only in the last decade however has it become more predominant in Mexican society, where many commentators have noted its rise with the killing and violence associated with the war between rival drug cartels and the Mexican Government.Since 2011, I visited Mexico several times to research, interview and document the devotees of this cult, as well as recorded …
