Nf-Κb Regulation Of C-Flip Promotes Tnfα-Mediated Raf Inhibitor Resistance In Melanoma., Yongping Shao, Kaitlyn Le, Hanyin Cheng, Andrew E. Aplin

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

Targeted inhibitors elicit heterogeneous clinical responses in genetically stratified groups of patients. Although most studies focus on tumor intrinsic properties, factors in the tumor microenvironment were recently found to modulate the response to inhibitors. Here, we show that in cutaneous BRAF V600E melanoma, the cytokine tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα) blocks RAF inhibitor-induced apoptosis via activation of NF-κB. Several NF-κB-dependent factors are upregulated following TNFα and RAF inhibitor treatment. Of these factors, we show that death receptor inhibitor cellular caspase 8 (FLICE)-like inhibitory protein (c-FLIP) is required for TNFα-induced protection against RAF inhibitor. Overexpression of c-FLIP_S or c-FLIP_L isoform decreased RAF …

Bone Graft Substitutes For Spine Fusion: A Brief Review, Ashim Gupta, Nitin Kukkar, Kevin Sharif, Benjamin J. Main, Christine E. Albers, Saadiq F. El-Amin Iii

Student Publications

Bone graft substitutes are widely used in the field of orthopedics and are extensively used to promote vertebral fusion. Fusion is the most common technique in spine surgery and is used to treat morbidities and relieve discomfort. Allograft and autograft bone substitutes are currently the most commonly used bone grafts to promote fusion. These approaches pose limitations and present complications to the patient. Numerous alternative bone graft substitutes are on the market or have been developed and proposed for application. These options have attempted to promote spine fusion by enhancing osteogenic properties. In this review, we reviewed biology of spine …

Record Keeper Or Historian? No, Cantadora!, Russell D. James Jul 2015

Record Keeper Or Historian? No, Cantadora!, Russell D. James

The Primary Source

Twentieth century professionals argued over whether their particular field of study was a science or an art. Modernists preferred science, romanticists and post-modernists fancied art. Archivists, arguably one of the most noble old professions, have had the same debate. As a philosopher-at-heart, I have always seen myself as an artist who unfortunately must be scientific. This approach to life has helped me in my journey toward my archival career.

Archaeologists And The Archival Record, Evan Peacock Jul 2015

Archaeologists And The Archival Record, Evan Peacock

The Primary Source

Archaeologists study the material record, bits of things that have been either intentionally or unintentionally modified by human beings to become artifacts. In a word, stuff. Practitioners are expected to become familiar with a vast range of stuff and the characteristics thereof: from the flowing ripple marks left on a fragment of stone after it has been hammered off of a larger piece to produce a flake, to the peculiar, stretched cross-section that indicates a square nail has been machine-cut rather than hand-forged. One particularly important subset of stuff is the archival record which, besides consisting itself of artifacts of …

Packaging Design Elements And Users Perception: A Context In Fashion Branding And Communication, Heer Vyas Jul 2015

Packaging Design Elements And Users Perception: A Context In Fashion Branding And Communication, Heer Vyas

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

The product packaging has a crucial role to attract consumer, force them to choose the product and act as a brand communication vehicle. The point of focus is how the elements of the package design affect consumer’s perceptions about products and brand. In this study, we collected data through a questionnaire that covered areas such as design elements of the package (size, shape, material, graphic design of package, typography, images and pictures), user’s perception (attention, purchase and repurchase) and their experience (feelings evoked and functional benefits). There is a difference with the professional status and age involvement with respect to …

There is always someone who has done

unspeakable things to a child, an animal,

To be insatiable isn’t to be

A Critical Review Of Horse-Related Risk: A Research Agenda For Safer Mounts, Riders And Equestrian Cultures, Kirrilly Thompson, Paul Mcgreevy, Phil Mcmanus Jul 2015

A Critical Review Of Horse-Related Risk: A Research Agenda For Safer Mounts, Riders And Equestrian Cultures, Kirrilly Thompson, Paul Mcgreevy, Phil Mcmanus

Sport and Working Animal Welfare Collection

While the importance of improving horse-related safety seems self-evident, no comprehensive study into understanding or reducing horse-related risk has been undertaken. In this paper, we discuss four dimensions of horse-related risk: the risk itself, the horse, the rider and the culture in which equestrian activities takes place. We identify how the ways in which risk is constructed in each dimension affects the applicability of four basic risk management options of avoidance, transference, mitigation and acceptance. We find the acceptance and avoidance of horse-related risk is generally high, most likely due to a common construction of horses as irrevocably unpredictable, fearful …

Eldred & The New Rationality, Brian L. Frye Jul 2015

Eldred & The New Rationality, Brian L. Frye

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

Historically, the rational basis test has been a constitutional rubber stamp. In Eldred v. Ashcroft and Golan v. Holder, the Supreme Court applied the rational basis test and respectively held that Congress could extend the copyright term of existing works and restore copyright protection of public domain works, despite evidence that Congress intended to benefit copyright owners at the expense of the public. But in Lawrence v. Texas and United States v. Windsor, the Supreme Court seems to have applied the rational basis test and held that state and federal laws were unconstitutional because they were motivated by …

Simulation And Analysis Of Wellbore Stability In Permafrost Formation With Flac, Kai Wang Jul 2015

Simulation And Analysis Of Wellbore Stability In Permafrost Formation With Flac, Kai Wang

Engineering

Permafrost underlies approximately 80% of Alaska. Permafrost's high sensitivity to temperature variations plays a significant role in the stability of wellbores drilled through permafrost formations. Wellbore instability may cause stuck pipes, lost circulation, and/or collapse of the wellbore, resulting in extra cost and time loss. In order to minimize the influence of the heat produced during drilling, a vertical well is the only choice to penetrate permafrost formation. Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua (FLAC) was used in this simulation to test the minimum wellbore pressure to maintain stability in a permafrost formation. Three layers were set in the simulation model: …

Demonstrating The P300 Psychophysiological Response In Rats During An Auditory Stimulus Detection Task Using Subcutaneous Electrodes, Abby Elizabeth Meyer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The P300 is a psychophysiological response that occurs 300-500 ms after the onset of a novel stimulus. This signal has been recorded in humans using EEG methods, but the recording method for non-human mammals has been surgically intrusive. While beneficial to determining specific brain regions that elicit the P300, a survey of current research indicates that targeting specific areas for recording does not yield substantial benefits over more global measures of neurophysiological activity. As such, we tested rats in an auditory oddball task to demonstrate if a less-intrusive means of recording the P300, using subcutaneous electrodes, can be achieved in …

The Trial Judge As Gatekeeper For Scientific Evidence: Will Ohio Rule Of Evidence 102 Frustrate The Ohio Courts' Role Under Daubert V. Merrell Dow?, Michael Lepp, Chrisopher B. Mcneil

Akron Law Review

This article considers the role of the trial court in responding to the changes wrought by scientific innovation. Particular consideration is given to the impact likely to be realized in Ohio trial courts from the decision of the United States Supreme Court in Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

[...]In order to appreciate the significance of Ohio Evidence Rule 102 in this context, it is helpful to first examine some of the events leading to Daubert, especially the application (and in some instances, the rejection) of Frye both in Ohio and at the federal level. Following that, this article will …

Punishment By Family And Community In Katherine Anne Porter's Noon Wine, Robert Batey

Akron Law Review

So crime and death permeate Noon Wine, but the novel is also a story of family and community. With evocative detail, Porter portrays the lives and relationships of the defendant Royal Earle Thompson, his wife Ellie, and their sons Arthur and Herbert, who mature from childhood to adolescence during the story. As the novel focuses on the young boys' propensity to play with the prized possessions of the farmhand Olaf Helton, his harmonicas, the reader learns how father, mother, and farmhand (for Helton grows to be "'one of the family"') participate in the trying task of childrearing.

Dolphin Protection And The Mammal Protection Act Have Met Their Match: The General Agreement On Tariffs And Trade, Joseph J. Urgese Jul 2015

Dolphin Protection And The Mammal Protection Act Have Met Their Match: The General Agreement On Tariffs And Trade, Joseph J. Urgese

Akron Law Review

The conflict between international environmental conservation and international free trade is not a battle between good and evil, but a struggle between reconciling the good with the good. Indeed, the international community has recognized the growing "need for rules to enhance [the] positive interaction between trade and environmental measures, for the promotion of sustainable development."' The contracting parties to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade [hereinafter GATT] agreed to formalize this principle during the Uruguay Round in April of 1994 by establishing a Committee on Trade and the Environment [hereinafter CTE]. This was an important step toward commingling international …

Neo-Federalism, Popular Sovereignity, And The Criminal Law, Terrance M. Messonnier Jul 2015

Neo-Federalism, Popular Sovereignity, And The Criminal Law, Terrance M. Messonnier

Akron Law Review

The first area is the substantive criminal law, especially at the federal level. In the following pages, this Article will discuss, from a Neo-Federalist perspective, the wide variety of laws found mostly in Title 18 of the United States Code that form our federal criminal law. This Article will suggest that there are both constitutional and pragmatic needs to reexamine what behavior should be punished on a federal level.

The second area is the law regarding criminal procedures. This Article will suggest, from the perspective of Popular Sovereignty, that the current trend to jealously guard jurisdictional prerogatives is not constitutionally …

A Radical Theory Of Jurisprudence: The "Decisionmaker" As The Source Of Law - The Ohio Supreme Court's Adoption Of The Spendthrift Trust Doctrine As A Model, Gerald P. Moran Jul 2015

A Radical Theory Of Jurisprudence: The "Decisionmaker" As The Source Of Law - The Ohio Supreme Court's Adoption Of The Spendthrift Trust Doctrine As A Model, Gerald P. Moran

Akron Law Review

This article will apply the jurisprudential thesis that law is essentially the naked preference of the Decisionmaker in examining the judicial enactment of Ohio's spendthrift trust doctrine. With some degree of hope, such an examination will clarify the Decisionmaker's institutional role in the Ohio Supreme Court's determination of whether a spendthrift trust is valid. In doing so, the article will ask why the Court adopted one line of legal reasoning over another? To this end, the often noted observation of the great sage Holmes enlightens us to the principle that an explanation is not found in the exercise of logic, …

Eliminate The "Middle Man"?, Richard Delgado Jul 2015

Eliminate The "Middle Man"?, Richard Delgado

Akron Law Review

The Editors of the Akron Law Review have asked me what I think of Bernard Hibbitts's suggestion that legal scholars do away with the law review as an institution and publish their work directly on the Internet, as he has done.

I like the idea of publishing one's work directly on the Internet. Self- publishing has a long and honorable history. Indeed, our early colonial patriots surreptitiously typeset tracts and pamphlets like Common Sense in homes and small back-alley print shops and distributed them themselves a method that could be likened to today's desktop and Internet publishing. Even in our …
