Legal And Psychological Considerations In Adolescents' End-Of-Life Choices, Molly J. Walker Wilson Aug 2015

Legal And Psychological Considerations In Adolescents' End-Of-Life Choices, Molly J. Walker Wilson

NULR Online

In this essay, Professor Wilson reflects on the manner in which the law treats adolescents who are faced with end-of-life decisions. She begins by surveying the legal framework underlying end-of-life choices at the state and federal levels. She then discusses two decisionmakers - adolescents and adults - and the behavioral traits and biases that animate each when end-of-life decisions arise. In doing so, Wilson draws upon a rich body of empirical work on human decisionmaking. Wilson concludes that placing end-of-life decisions solely in the hands of adolescents or adults can result in suboptimal choices. She proposes the use of a …

Taxonomy Of The Bitentaculate Cirratulidae (Polychaeta), Stacy A. Tewari

Graduate Masters Theses

The bitentaculate cirratulid polychaetes are an important faunal element of both near shore and deep-sea benthic faunal communities. The true diversity of the family is currently unknown due to a large number of undescribed species and erroneously applied “cospmopolitan” names being applied to local species. Cirratulids have been misidentified even in the local waters near the University of Massachusetts Boston. The current study presents six new species from North America. Caulleriella venefica, Chaetozone anasimus, Chaetozone diodonta, and Chaetozone hystricosus are described from Boston Harbor and Massachusetts Bay where only two species had previously been reported. Aphelochaeta bullata …

Forty Years On: Women Lawyers? Still On That? And Ecofeminism . . . Again?, Daniel M. Warner Aug 2015

Forty Years On: Women Lawyers? Still On That? And Ecofeminism . . . Again?, Daniel M. Warner

Tennessee Journal of Race, Gender, & Social Justice

Forty years ago, environmentally concerned law students put hope for sustainability in two trends. First, the burgeoning number of women law-school students held promise: upon reaching professional stride in their forties and fifties (the late 1980s and 1990s), surely their influence would disabuse law and society of enough of its patriarchal, hierarchical domination—domination over nature here—to move society toward a new, sustainable course. Second—and related—the emerging philosophy of ecofeminism promised to call out the ecocrisis and push on with positive responses. But women never assumed influential roles in the important “big firms,” and ecofeminism lost focus and dissipated in a …

Pkcε-Mediated Arc-Dependent Preconditioning And Aging, Charles H. Cohan Aug 2015

Pkcε-Mediated Arc-Dependent Preconditioning And Aging, Charles H. Cohan

Open Access Dissertations

Cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death in the United States and results in a large population with cognitive deficits. These deficits are due to transient global ischemia and the resulting cell death within the CA1 region of the hippocampus and associated brain regions. The administration of the specific protein kinase C epsilon activator drug, psi epsilon-Receptor for Activated C Kinase (WERACK), protects neurons within the CA1 region; however, the mechanism of action has not been fully elucidated. In this study, it was determined that ?eRACK treatment increased brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) protein expression, tropomyosin related kinase B …

Fatty Acid Binding Protein Deletion Suppresses Inflammatory Pain Through Endocannabinoid/N-Acylethanolamine-Dependent Mechanisms, Martin Kaczocha, Sherrye T. Glaser, Thomas Maher, Brendan Clavin, John Hamilton, Joseph O’Rourke, Mario Rebecchi, Michelino Puopolo, Yuji Owada, Panayotis K. Thanos

Publications and Research

Background Fatty acid binding proteins (FABPs) serve as intracellular carriers that deliver endocannabinoids and N-acylethanolamines to their catabolic enzymes. Inhibition of FABPs reduces endocannabinoid transport and catabolism in cells and FABP inhibitors produce antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects in mice. Potential analgesic effects in mice lacking FABPs, however, have not been tested. Findings Mice lacking FABP5 and FABP7, which exhibit highest affinities for endocannabinoids, possessed elevated levels of the endocannabinoid anandamide and the related N-acylethanolamines palmitoylethanolamide and oleoylethanolamide. There were no compensatory changes in the expression of other FABPs or in endocannabinoid-related proteins in the brains of FABP5/7 knockout mice. These …

Application Of New Type Of Antiseptic Natamycin In Liquid Feed, Lei Dezhu, Huang Yongjian

Food and Machinery

Inhibition effects were investigated for new type of antiseptic natamycin and the combination of natamycin and sodium diacetate on common mildews, including Aspergillus niger, Rhizopus niveus, Mucor corticolus, Penicillium glaucum. The results indicated that the minimal inhibition concentration of natamycin was 3~6 mg/L, while the optimized inhibition ratio was 4 mg/L to 3 g/L in the combination. Destructive storage test was also conducted at 10, 20 and 30 mg/L respectively in this paper, and little difference were observed according to the result by plate counting. 100% inhibition effect of natamycin at 10 mg/L could be expected to last for 18 …

Development Of The Crispr/Cas9 System For Targeted Gene Disruption In Aspergillus Fumigatus, Kevin Fuller, Shan Chen, Jennifer J. Loros, Jay C. Dunlap

Dartmouth Scholarship

Low rates of homologous recombination have broadly encumbered genetic studies in the fungal pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus. The CRISPR/Cas9 system of bacteria has recently been developed for targeted mutagenesis of eukaryotic genomes with high effi- ciency and, importantly, through a mechanism independent of homologous repair machinery. As this new technology has not been developed for use in A. fumigatus, we sought to test its feasibility for targeted gene disruption in this organism. As a proof of principle, we first demonstrated that CRISPR/Cas9 can indeed be used for high-efficiency (25 to 53%) targeting of the A. fu- migatus polyketide synthase gene (pksP), …

Population Dynamics Of Empoasca Fabae (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) In Central Iowa Alfalfa Fields, L. A. Weiser Erlandson, John J. Obrycki

Entomology Faculty Publications

Adults and nymphs of Empoasca fabae Harris (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) and adults of predatory species in the families Coccinellidae, Anthocoridae, Nabidae, Chrysopidae, and Hemerobiidae were sampled in Iowa alfalfa fields from June to September in 1999 and 2000. The relationship between each predatory taxa and E. fabae was examined using regression analysis. In 2000, all predators were found to be positively correlated with the presence of E. fabae during all periods sampled and most likely contributed to mortality. Orius insidiosus (Say) (Hemiptera: Anthoridae) was the most numerous insect predatory species; population numbers ranged from 0 to 1 and 0.1 to 3.7 …

Yinyang Bipolar Quantum Geometry And Bipolar Quantum Superposition Part I—A Background Independent Geometrical And Logical Exposition Of Dirac 3-Polarizer Experiment, Wen-Ran Zhang, Francesco Marchetti

Computing: Faculty Publications

Bipolar quantum agent (BQA), bipolar quantum geometry (BQG) and bipolar dynamic logic (BDL) are introduced based on bipolar complementarity – a logical extension to Niels Bohr’s particle-wave YinYang duality principle. Complete geometrical background independence is proposed and BQG is proven completely background independent which leads to the notion of bipolar quantum superposition – an equilibrium-based logical approach to superposition. It is shown that the logical linearity of BDL can be unified with the physical nonlinearity of bipolar dynamic equilibrium. It is proven that a single polarized photon as a BQA can be logically channeled through the three polarizers in Dirac’s …

Dartmouth Scholarship

Candida albicans is both a major fungal pathogen and a member of the commensal human microflora. The morphological switch from yeast to hyphal growth is associated with disease and many environmental factors are known to influence the yeast-to-hyphae switch. The Ras1-Cyr1-PKA pathway is a major regulator of C. albicans morphogenesis as well as biofilm formation and white-opaque switching. Previous studies have shown that hyphal growth is strongly repressed by mitochondrial inhibitors. Here, we show that mitochondrial inhibitors strongly decreased Ras1 GTP-binding and activity in C. albicans and similar effects were observed in other Candida species. Consistent with there …

Insights Into Alzheimer’S Disease: The Levels Of Signaling Proteins In Brain Of Control Subjects Versus Brain From Subjects With Mild Cognitive Impairment, Georgianne F. Tiu

Kaleidoscope

The purpose of this study was to measure the expression levels of key signaling proteins in brain tissue from subjects with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) compared to control subjects. MCI is considered to be the beginning phase of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), nuclear factor kappa beta (NF-κβ), phospho Bad (pBad), and ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase-L1 (UCH-L1) are four of the proteins that were investigated. Trends of either decreases or increases in protein expression levels in MCI vs. control brain were investigated. Western blot analysis was used in order to identify these trends. These signaling protein levels are …

Power And Pride: The Mythologization Of The Cossack Figure In Russian History And Its Impact On Modern Russian National Identity, Rachael Ulrich

Kaleidoscope

Our expedition traveled to the Don Cossack Ust- Khopiorskaia Stanitsa to record mythologized cultural practices in the form of rituals and performances. Located on the banks of the Don and Khopior River junction, about 1,500 people reside in a village consisting of several streets of wooden and stone houses, a cultural center, a school, and a few small markets. Most remaining residents in the village are pensioners, who support their meager incomes with backyard gardens. The young who have finished primary school leave for the nearest city, Volgograd, to find work or pursue further studies, because opportunities for neither exist …

Development Of Transgenic Lines To Support Plant Cell Biology Research, Kristin Kopperud Aug 2015

Development Of Transgenic Lines To Support Plant Cell Biology Research, Kristin Kopperud

Kaleidoscope

Viruses pose a threat to humans in a variety of ways — from direct infection to imposing devastating effects on the agriculture industry. Prevention of such infection requires knowledge of the mechanisms of viral infection, both in animal- and plant-infecting species. The goal of this project was to identify plant factors that interact with viral proteins in the course of infection leading to disease. Sonchus yellow net virus (SYNV) and Potato yellow dwarf virus (PYDV) were used to test the hypothesis that the viruses utilize different subsets of host factors in order to infect Nicotiana benthamiana, despite both being …

The Agricultural Footprints On The Environment, Philip Houtz Aug 2015

The Agricultural Footprints On The Environment, Philip Houtz

Kaleidoscope

Industrialized agricultural systems have given America a convenient and affordable means to supply a surplus of food products to its citizens. Transgenic technology, synthesized fertilizers, advanced pesticides, concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), and the use of farm machinery have all contributed to humanity’s ability to feed the world’s rapidly growing population. However, the energy-intensive food operation of today may not be as ideal as we assume. Fossil fuels are burned to meet the energy requirements for the continual production of large quantities of fertilizer and to keep farm machines operational. Fertilizer and pesticide runoff from farmland ultimately drains into rivers …
