Coyotes On The Web: Understanding Human-Coyote Interaction And Online Education Using Citizen Science, Zuriel Anne Rasmussen
Coyotes On The Web: Understanding Human-Coyote Interaction And Online Education Using Citizen Science, Zuriel Anne Rasmussen
Dissertations and Theses
Coyote (Canis latrans) numbers are increasing in urban areas, leading to more frequent human-coyote interactions. Rarely, and particularly when coyotes have become habituated to humans, conflicts occur. Effective education about urban coyotes and how to prevent habituation reduces conflict. Citizen science, in the form of online education, can be used to engage and educate city dwellers about urban coyotes. In this research, I explore Portland Metropolitan Area (PMA) residents' baseline experiences with, and attitudes toward, urban coyotes. Next, I investigate citizen science as a tool for education. Using the Portland Urban Coyote Project (PUCP), a citizen science project, as a …

The Development Of A Model For Vascular Calcification And The Effects Of Magnesium Supplementation On In Vitro Calcification, Joshua Nathaniel Grant
The Development Of A Model For Vascular Calcification And The Effects Of Magnesium Supplementation On In Vitro Calcification, Joshua Nathaniel Grant
Theses and Dissertations
Cardiovascular disease is most deadly medical condition in the United States. Medial vascular calcification is a disease that often precedes other more serious cardiovascular diseases that have high mortality. In order to research new therapies for the treatment of medial vascular calcification, an in vitro cell culture model must be developed that mimics the process in vivo. This disease is shown to be an active, cell-mediated process where the vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) in the arteries are differentiating into osteoblast-like cells and depositing hydroxyapatite mineral in the artery walls. By administering inorganic phosphate to cell culture medium, an osteogenic …

Biodiversity And The Role Of Bioturbating Invertebrates In Nutrient Cycling In Stormwater Ponds, Kerry Lee Kuntz
Biodiversity And The Role Of Bioturbating Invertebrates In Nutrient Cycling In Stormwater Ponds, Kerry Lee Kuntz
Theses
Stormwater retention ponds are typically constructed to manage stormwater in commercial and residential areas, thereby reducing flooding and erosion and improving downstream water quality. Although auxiliary ecosystem services of stormwater ponds are less often recognized, these small aquatic ecosystems may also serve as habitat for aquatic flora and fauna and can be hotspots for biogeochemical cycling. This study examined the biological communities and physicochemical environment of 9 stormwater ponds in Rochester, New York, USA to assess their role in supporting biodiversity and facilitating carbon and nutrient cycling in developed landscapes. A field study revealed that pond age and vegetation cover …

Longevity Of Mineral Supplements Within The Soil And Associated Use By White-Tailed Deer, Brian C. Peterson, Keith D. Koupal, Andrew K. Schissel, Cody M. Siegel
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Humans have baited wildlife such as white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) for generations with the primary purpose of increasing hunting harvest success. Baiting regulation changes are often considered by state management agencies as they pertain to hunting opportunity, fair chase, and disease risk. Cervids require a variety of minerals to supplement biological processes, especially sodium (Na), calcium (Ca), and phosphorus (P). We developed artificial mineral supplement sites set in front of trail cameras to monitor deer use. Pooled soil samples were collected at mineral sites and compared to the surrounding area to determine the longevity of elevated minerals levels …
Characterization Of The Ability Of Yeast Probiotics And Paraprobiotics To Directly Interact With Gram-Positive And Gram-Negative Bacteria, Gabriel Alviola Posadas
Characterization Of The Ability Of Yeast Probiotics And Paraprobiotics To Directly Interact With Gram-Positive And Gram-Negative Bacteria, Gabriel Alviola Posadas
Theses and Dissertations
Yeast probiotics and paraprobiotics, live and inactivated yeast cells, respectively, improve health and performance of livestock by stabilizing the intestinal microbial community. They have also been used for infection prevention and treatment. Despite much research already conducted, the mechanism of direct antagonism, or adhesion of bacteria to the probiotic/paraprobiotic, is under characterized. Additionally, it is unknown which probiotic/paraprobiotic is optimal to use for specific infections. The interactions between the yeast and certain pathogens were analyzed qualitatively with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and quantitatively with membrane filtration assays. Gram-positive bacteria were found to exhibit specificity under SEM. Through membrane filtration, Listeria …

Conserving The Mississippi Gopher Frog (Lithobates Sevosa) Through The Use Of Assisted Reproductive Technologies, Katherine Michelle Graham
Theses and Dissertations
The Mississippi gopher frog (MGF, Lithobates sevosa) is a critically endangered amphibian which requires the use of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) to successfully reproduce in captivity. Several challenges to successfully breeding MGFs were investigated to improve reproduction in this species. Accurate identification of biological sex is a necessary first step to reproducing species, thus several non-invasive techniques for sex identification were compared in the weakly dimorphic MGF. Reliably obtaining eggs from female MGFs has also proved difficult, therefore, four exogenous hormone therapies were compared for their success to induce ovulation. Ultrasound imaging was used alongside hormone treatments to improve understanding …

Lightweight calves were 2.8 times more likely to be treated for BRD (p=0.02) and each increase in hair shed score increased risk for …
Examination Of The Effects Of Vitamin D Supplementation On The In Vitro Calcification Of Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells, Kevin Andrew Bennett
Examination Of The Effects Of Vitamin D Supplementation On The In Vitro Calcification Of Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells, Kevin Andrew Bennett
Theses and Dissertations
Medial calcification refers to mineral deposition in the middle layer of arteries. This mineralization is common in chronic kidney disease patients and causes an increased chance of cardiovascular complications. Calcitriol, the active form of vitamin D, is often administered to these patients to treat an associated condition, secondary hyperparathyroidism. Unfortunately, calcitriol treatment may promote vascular calcification due to increasing serum calcium and phosphate. We examined the effects of calcitriol supplementation on vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) calcification, through atomic absorption, scanning electron microscopy, and western blot analysis. Additionally, we examined the effects of the combinations of calcitriol, fibroblast growth factor …

Theses and Dissertations
A greenhouse pot study was conducted on three soils with varying clay contents to establish K critical value at -3 and -1/3 bar soil moisture levels. Four K fertilizer treatments (0, 0.07, 0.14, and 0.3 g/pot) replicated three times were arranged in a complete randomized block design. The Cate-Nelson graphical procedure revealed that K critical values for corn and soybeans were not equal at the two designated moisture levels. The corresponding percentage yield however was higher at -1/3 bars for corn and at -3 bars for soybean. Statistical regression analysis showed that there was a minor response in plant tissue …
Feed Quality Effects On Modern Heavy Broiler Performance, Robert Benjamin Sellers
Feed Quality Effects On Modern Heavy Broiler Performance, Robert Benjamin Sellers
Theses and Dissertations
Commercial broilers are fed exclusively pelleted diets; this is due to research that has demonstrated numerous benefits to feeding pellets. The first objective was to investigate the effects of modest improvements in pellet quality on two modern broiler strains. Regardless of strain, feeding 80% pellets improved broiler performance from d 28 to 42. The second objective was to investigate the effects of feed form and liquid application method on feed augering segregation and subsequent broiler performance. In general, percent pellets steadily decreased across location throughout feed augering. Also, phytase segregation occurred throughout augering and was exacerbated in post-pellet liquid application …
Selection Dynamics In Heliconius Hybrid Zones And The Origin Of Adaptive Variation, Steven Grant Shaak
Selection Dynamics In Heliconius Hybrid Zones And The Origin Of Adaptive Variation, Steven Grant Shaak
Theses and Dissertations
There is repeated evidence that hybridization is a major contributor to the production of adaptive diversity; however, the evolutionary fate of hybrids in natural populations remains poorly understood. In Heliconius butterflies, hybridization is common and responsible for generating a variety of warning color patterns across the genus. Predator avoidance of warning colorations appears to largely be learned, which drives strong positive frequency-dependent selection. This creates a paradox for hybrid lineages: how do novel hybrid forms manage to establish and persist under such strong selection? In this dissertation, I present a series of studies centered on the selection dynamics of Heliconius …

Identification Of Purpurogallin In Brewed Beverages And Effect Of Roasting On Antioxidant Activity And Phenolic Compounds In Coffees, Yu-Chen Liao
Theses and Dissertations
Coffee contains many antioxidants including purpurogallin, which is a hydrophobic phenolic antioxidant that is difficult to measure with reported methods. A method combining solid-phase extraction and liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry was developed to detect and quantify purpurogallin in brewed beverages, including coffee. For beverage preparation, water extraction was adopted for improved correlation with moka pot brewing. Purpurogallin was detected in all commercial coffee samples, and its content in ground coffees ranged from 455-630 ng/g dry weight. Purpurogallin was only detected in two English breakfast tea samples (335-360 ng/g dry weight) and was not detected in any cocoa sample. Antioxidant activity, total …
Impact Of Corn Earworm On Field Corn Yield And Grain Quality, Jenny Lee Bibb
Impact Of Corn Earworm On Field Corn Yield And Grain Quality, Jenny Lee Bibb
Theses and Dissertations
Field corn, Zea mays L., has been introduced to the market with pyramided Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) corn technologies. These technologies reduce kernel damage from ear feeding caterpillar pests, including corn earworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie). The first generation Bt traits in field corn demonstrated limited activity on corn earworm feeding on grain in ears. The pyramided corn technologies have greater cumulative protein concentrations and improved expression throughout the plant, so these corn traits should provide an effective management tool against these pests. In addition, reduced kernel injury may also have a direct effect on physical grain quality. The results for this …

The Evaluation Of Adsorbents For The Removal Of Aflatoxin M1 From Contaminated Milk, Erika D. Womack
The Evaluation Of Adsorbents For The Removal Of Aflatoxin M1 From Contaminated Milk, Erika D. Womack
Theses and Dissertations
Taking precautions to restrain aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) from milk is critical, particularly due to the health and economic impact AFM1 imposes. The predominant post-harvest means of reducing AFM1 in milk includes the addition of sequestering agents to feed to diminish the bioavailability of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), the parent compound of AFM1 found in contaminated feed. Still, residual AFM1 has been found in the milk. Using sequestering agents added to raw milk, we found that activated carbon was the most effective binder to reduce AFM1 contamination. The combination of 0.75% granular activated carbon (GAC) and a flow rate of 0.4 mL/min …

The Keetch-Byram Drought Index And The Geographical Variability In Wildfire Size And Frequency In Eight Natural Areas Of The United States, Michael Tobit Gray
Theses and Dissertations
A continental-scale study of historic wildfire data within and across ecoregion provinces was conducted and geographical gradients in seasonal measures of wildfire size and frequency were observed. In the conterminous United States, western ecoregion provinces show north-south gradients in duration of season (short-to-long) and peak of season (early-to-late). Across the continent a gradient of unimodal to bimodal seasonal distributions of wildfire size and frequency was shown: western ecoregions have a single summer fire season and eastern regions have spring and late-summer fire seasons separated by an intervening dip in wildfire activity. From the ecoregion provinces with the highest wildfire frequency, …
