Nonparametric Estimation Of Interspecific Spatio-Temporal Niche Separation Between Two Lady Beetles (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) In Bt Cotton Fields, Zeng Bin Lu, Pei Jian Shi, Gadi V.P. Reddy, Lin Mao Li, Xing Yuan Men, Feng Ge
Nonparametric Estimation Of Interspecific Spatio-Temporal Niche Separation Between Two Lady Beetles (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) In Bt Cotton Fields, Zeng Bin Lu, Pei Jian Shi, Gadi V.P. Reddy, Lin Mao Li, Xing Yuan Men, Feng Ge
Faculty Publications
Predaceous lady beetles are important natural enemies of many insect pests in agro-ecosystem. The altered agricultural practices associated with widespread adoption of Bt cotton may have potential effects on the spatio-temporal patterns of predaceous lady beetles, as the composition and abundance of nontarget sucking pests have been changed in Bt cotton fields. In the current study, the spatio-temporal patterns of two important lady beetles, Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) and Propylea japonica (Thunberg) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), were surveyed in Bt cotton fields. A nonparametric method associated with Monte Carlo tests was used to address and test whether niche segregation occurred between …

Production Of Inbred Larvae Through Self-Fertilization Using Oocytes And Cryopreserved Sperm From The Same Individuals After Sex Reversal In Eastern Oyster Crassostrea Virginica, Huiping Yang, Yan Wang, Ximing Guo, Terrence R. Tiersch
Faculty Publications
The eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica can change sex which makes self-fertilization possible if sperm can be cryopreserved. In this study, small (~1 year old) and large (~2-3 years old) oysters were biopsied for sperm collection. Survival of the biopsied oysters after 1 year was 50% for small oysters and 17% for large oysters. Oocytes were collected from sex-reversed females, and self-fertilized with cryopreserved sperm. Of the 24 cryopreserved samples, 14 individuals had ≤1% fertility when crossed with oocytes from unrelated females, indicating that the cryopreserved sperm had reduced fertility. The other 10 individuals had a fertility of 39 ± 25% …

The Challenges Of Resolving A Rapid, Recent Radiation: Empirical And Simulated Phylogenomics Of Philippine Shrews, Thomas C. Giarla, Jacob A. Esselstyn
Faculty Publications
Phylogenetic relationships in recent, rapid radiations can be difficult to resolve due to incomplete lineage sorting and reliance on genetic markers that evolve slowly relative to the rate of speciation. By incorporating hundreds to thousands of unlinked loci, phylogenomic analyses have the potential to mitigate these difficulties. Here, we attempt to resolve phylogenetic relationships among eight shrew species (genus Crocidura) from the Philippines, a phylogenetic problem that has proven intractable with small (< 10 loci) data sets. We sequenced hundreds of ultraconserved elements and whole mitochondrial genomes in these species and estimated phylogenies using concatenation, summary coalescent, and hierarchical coalescent methods. The concatenated approach recovered a maximally supported and fully resolved tree. In contrast, the coalescent-based approaches produced similar topologies, but each had several poorly supported nodes. Using simulations, we demonstrate that the concatenated tree could be positively misleading. Our simulations also show that the tree shape we tend to infer, which involves a series of short internal branches, is difficult to resolve, even if substitution models are known and multiple individuals per species are sampled. As such, the low support we obtained for backbone relationships in our coalescent-based inferences reflects a real and appropriate lack of certainty. Our results illuminate the challenges of estimating a bifurcating tree in a rapid and recent radiation, providing a rare empirical example of a nearly simultaneous series of speciation events in a terrestrial animal lineage as it spreads across an oceanic archipelago.

Finding Aids
James Wilson Cassell was a medical doctor based in New York who was also an amateur photographer. He was active in masonic organizations. He often used his collection of magic lantern slides for travel talks at masonic lodges. Most of the slides have Beseler Lantern Slide Company printed on the mounts, but it is unclear whether some of the slides were part of educational sets sold by that company or whether that company only processed and possibly hand-colored Dr. Cassell’s own photographs. The collection with an estimated 700 slides consists mostly of travel images of foreign places and archaeological sites, …

An Interpretivist Study Of Customer Self-Service Technology Usage And Experiences In The Tourism Sector., Petranka Kelly
Doctoral
This study provides an interpretivist exploration of customer usage and experiences of self-service technologies (SSTs) in the tourism sector. Tourism customers are increasingly using a wide range of SSTs, for example, to make reservations online and use self-check-in and „bag and tag‟ facilities at airports. While SST research to date has provided insights into the factors affecting customer SST adoption decisions, the aim of this study is to explore customers‟ perspectives on their usage and experiences of SSTs in the tourism sector. This interpretivist study employs a two-stage qualitative methodology of short qualitative interviews with 133 participants at an international …

The Effects Of Cinnamaldehyde, Monensin And Quebracho Condensed Tannin On Rumen Fermentation, Biohydrogenation And Bacteria In Continuous Culture System, A Ishlak, M Günal, A A Abughazaleh
Peer-reviewed Articles
The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effects of different feed additives (cinnamaldehyde, monensin, and quebracho condensed tannin extract) on fermentation, trans fatty acids (FA) formation and selected strains of rumen bacteria. Four continuous culture systems were used in 4 × 4 Latin square designs with 4 periods of 10 days each. Treatment diets were: control diet (44:56 forage to concentrate; CON), control plus cinnamaldehyde (CIN) at 400 mg/L, control plus monensin (MON) at 12 mg/L, and control with quebracho condensed tannin extract (QTAN) at 100 g/kg of diet (DM basis). Fermenters were fed treatment diets three times …

Biosolids stockpiles from sewage treatment plants are a valuable source of organic matter which could be utilized to improve the nutritional status and physical properties of Au mine tailings and support the growth of vegetation planted in the tailings. However, biosolids often contain elevated concentrations of heavy metals including Hg while Au mine tailings would usually contain residual Au. Therefore, it would be beneficial to select plants capable of both tolerating and phytoextracting Hg and/or Au.
This paper reports on a glasshouse-based screening study which examined the growth of plant species known for their ability to phytoextract Hg and/or Au …

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications
The Lyme disease spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi, expresses RevA and numerous outer surface lipoproteins during mammalian infection. As an adhesin that promotes bacterial interaction with fibronectin, RevA is poised to interact with the extracellular matrix of the host. To further define the role(s) of RevA during mammalian infection, we created a mutant that is unable to produce RevA. The mutant was still infectious to mice, although it was significantly less well able to infect cardiac tissues. Complementation of the mutant with a wild-type revA gene restored heart infectivity to wild-type levels. Additionally, revA mutants led to increased evidence of arthritis, …

Muscle Weakness During Aging: A Deficiency State Involving Declining Angiogenesis, Charles T. Ambrose
Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications
This essay begins by proposing that muscle weakness of old age from sarcopenia is due in large part to reduced capillary density in the muscles, as documented in 9 reports of aged persons and animals. Capillary density (CD) is determined by local levels of various angiogenic factors, which also decline in muscles with aging, as reported in 7 studies of old persons and animals. There are also numerous reports of reduced CD in the aged brain and other studies showing reduced CD in the kidney and heart of aged animals. Thus a waning angiogenesis throughout the body may be …

Turning To Culture In Times Of Crisis: Global Toolkits And Urban Reinvestment In Buenos Aires, Jacob H. Lederman
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
As cities transition from industrial to post-industrial forms of development, new activities based on leisure and entertainment have come to comprise a greater share of urban economic growth. Drawing upon 10 months of qualitative fieldwork, this research examines the emergence of new urban policies, increasingly reliant on cultural and touristic production, which gained importance in Buenos Aires after Argentina's devastating 2001-2002 economic crisis. Through interviews and fieldwork with policymakers, everyday cultural producers, and the urban poor situated at the margins of these changes, the dissertation seeks to illuminate how local officials reconceived of culture as a form of economic development …

Study Of Free Radical Scavenging Activity Of Antibiotic Growth Promoters Flavophospholipol And Avilamycin, Krittika Kabploy, Nuntavan Bunyapraphatsara, Noppawan Phumala Morales, Nuanchan Paraksa
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Non-antibiotic feed additives have been developed to be used as alternatives, but none of them is effective as antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs). Understanding other mechanisms related to growth promoter of AGPs may be beneficial to the search for effective feed additives for animal production. In vitro and in vivo studies were conducted to evaluate the free radical scavenging activities of flavophospholipol and avilamycin. The in vitro study showed that flavophospholipol had a potent scavenging activity for DPPH, hydroxyl and nitric oxide radicals with the exception of superoxide anion radicals and their IC50 were 155.1, 62.6 and 105.6 mg/l, respectively. The …

Discrimination, Substance Use, And Cultural Buffers Among Native American College Students, Brenna L. Greenfield
Psychology ETDs
The negative effects of racial discrimination and microaggressions on health have been consistently documented, but only a handful of studies have examined this topic among Native Americans. The goal of this study was to test the Indigenist Stress-Coping Model (Walters, Simoni, & Evans-Campbell, 2002) among Native American college students attending two post-secondary institutions in the Southwestern United States. It was hypothesized that microaggressions would be positively related to substance use, and that cultural factors would attenuate the strength of this relationship. A total of 347 participants (65% female) completed a one-time online survey that included the Microaggressions Scale, the Actualization …

The Development Of Identity In Preschoolers, Jin Xiaoshen
Psychology ETDs
The primary goal of this study was to investigating the extent to which young preschoolers (e.g., 3-year-olds) understand identity in terms of what an object does rather than in terms of either what the object looks like or what its inside properties are. My primary guiding research questions are on what basis do preschoolers construct identity judgments. Unlike previous research, which has focused primarily on one pair of qualities (insides/outsides), this study includes diverse pairs in order to investigate different levels/qualities of organization that characterize preschoolers judgments of identity constancy. I predicted that a transition may occur between the ages …

United States National Park Service: Publications
Introduction
In 2014, the preserve’s federal and NGO partners conducted prescribed fires during March, April, and October that encompassed 8129.8 acres of Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve (TAPR). This was a unique burn year in that prescribed burns occurred in the spring, the traditional burn season, and the fall. Fall burns were conducted to support needed archaeological surveys as part of the environmental compliance for a symphony event scheduled for June 2015 at the preserve. Burns at TAPR were coordinated with local US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), The Nature Conservancy (TNC), and various units of the National Park Service.

Drugs On Tap: Managing Pharmaceuticals In Our Nation’S Waters, Gabriel Eckstein
Faculty Scholarship
Pharmaceuticals in the environment and public water supplies are believed to have serious impacts on human and environmental health. Current research suggests that exposure to certain drugs and their residues may result in a variety of adverse human health effects. Other studies more conclusively show that even minute concentrations of pharmaceuticals in the environment can have detrimental effects on aquatic and terrestrial species. Unfortunately, the cost of removing these pernicious substances is out of the financial reach of most municipalities and wastewater and drinking water treatment operators.
Despite the concerns, little effort has been made to develop broad management, mitigatory, …

Impossible Heights: From Mining To Sport In The Mountain West, 1849 To 1936, Jason Strykowski
History ETDs
The discovery of gold in California inspired a rush of amateur miners to the Sierra Nevada mountains in 1849. Meanwhile, Europeans hurried to their Alps to climb during the Golden Age of Mountaineering. These events, seemingly separate, came from the same basic impetus. The Scientific Revolution eased the old fear of mountains from the religious tradition and gave humans the license and curiosity to explore. Mountains also offered capital incentive to adventurers in the form of mineral deposits, tourism and the glory that comes with athletic accomplishment. Between 1849 and 1936, "mountaineers" transformed the nearly inaccessible high places of the …

Conflict, Tension, Strength,' explores the longevity of three separate Catholic Indian missions in the West: St. Paul's Mission in Hays, Montana; St. Labre Indian School in Ashland, Montana; and St. Stephens Indian School in St. Stephens, Wyoming. These mission schools, in part, possess two common traits: they have all reached the 125-year milestone and they are all located on or adjacent to reservations that serve two distinct Indian tribes. St. Paul's Mission is on the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation, home to the Gros Ventre and Assiniboine tribes. St. Labre Indian School serves students from the Northern Cheyenne and Crow reservations. …
