Viewing The Status Of Virginia’S Environment Through The Lens Of Freshwater Fishes, Paul L. Angermeier, Michael J. Pinder
Viewing The Status Of Virginia’S Environment Through The Lens Of Freshwater Fishes, Paul L. Angermeier, Michael J. Pinder
Virginia Journal of Science
We summarize a range of topics related to the status of Virginia’s freshwater fishes, their reflection of environmental quality, and their contribution to human wellbeing. Since 1994 the list of extant Virginia fishes has lengthened from 210 species to 227 species, mostly due to taxonomic reorganizations. Virginia’s list of Species of Greatest Conservation Need currently contains 96 fish species, predominated by darters (32 species) and minnows (28 species). Increasing trends in species rarity and threats to fishes suggest that Virginia’s aquatic environment is becoming less hospitable for fishes. Prevailing anthropogenic threats to fishes include agriculture, urban development, mineral extraction, forestry, …
Maximizing Utility In Electric Utility Regulation, Jonas J. Monast
Maximizing Utility In Electric Utility Regulation, Jonas J. Monast
Florida State University Law Review
The electric power sector is undergoing a period of profound change, reacting to economic, technological, and regulatory variables that have emerged quickly and largely without warning. In many states, the public utility commission (PUC) will play a key role in deter-mining how electric utilities respond to these rapidly changing circumstances, the outcome of which will affect electricity rates, investor returns, public health, and local and state economies for decades to come. The general mandate underlying many utility commission proceedings—seeking the least cost option for maintaining a reliable electricity sector—provides the PUC with considerable discretion to choose among sources of information, …
Integrating Gardening As A Tool To Teach The Concept Of Sustainability To Elementary School Students, Hannah Cobb, Madisen Hasenauer
Integrating Gardening As A Tool To Teach The Concept Of Sustainability To Elementary School Students, Hannah Cobb, Madisen Hasenauer
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Sustainability is becoming an increasingly important topic in today’s society. Society as a whole benefits from having an environmentally conscious citizen who can make an informed impact on social issues involving natural resources. As future educators, it is our responsibility to provide learners with the knowledge and skills required to become an active part of repairing our planet. Research suggests that school gardens can be a powerful tool in promoting outdoor education, encouraging positive peer relationships, and building strong communities, while teaching sustainability concepts. I propose teachers who receive school support, collaborate with committed volunteers, and acquire access to the …

Earthly Pleasures: Bounty In Ukiyo-E Prints (2015), Theory & History Of Art & Design Department, Elena Varshavskaya (H791 Instructor)
Ukiyo-e Prints Course | Exhibition Catalogs
"Earthly Pleasures or, broader, nature’s riches and man, is a topic for an exhibition project of the ukiyo-e prints curatorial course taught at RISD in the Fall Semester of 2015. When deciding on this subject matter we were curious to see how the urban art of ukiyo-e with its focus on figurative representation of celebrities dealt with the nature theme, essential for Japanese culture and all-pervading in Japanese classical visual arts and literature. Did ukiyo-e artists include images of nature in their compositions? If yes, then who, when and how? It is with this quest in mind that a …

Praise In The Elementary Classroom: The Teacher’S Perspective, Steven J. Bourgeois
Praise In The Elementary Classroom: The Teacher’S Perspective, Steven J. Bourgeois
Journal of Contemporary Research in Education
While words of encouragement from teachers may seem innocuous on the surface, the practice may have hidden costs (Kohn, 1993). Although effective in the short-run, the use of extrinsic motivators, such as praise, has been shown to have an undermining effect on long-term motivation to learn (Deci & Ryan, 2000). Mindful of the fact that academic intrinsic motivation decreases from ages 9-18 (Gottfried & Gottfried, 1996, 2006), the present study sought to gain insight into the phenomenon of classroom praise from the perspective of 105 elementary teachers, revealing their explanation and justification for this practice. Although research has documented the …
Art History 373: The West Encounters The Rest, Janice Mann, Emily Sherwood
Art History 373: The West Encounters The Rest, Janice Mann, Emily Sherwood
Bucknell Digital Scholarship Collection
This class examined what happens to the visual arts when European cultures encounter those in other parts of the globe. Moving chronologically from the 15th to the early 20th century, ARTH373 explored how the visual arts develop in response to encounters between cultures with different cultural identities and artistic traditions. Throughout the semester, Professor Mann focused on facilitating collaborative learning and co-inquiry through activity-centered digital projects. Students collaborated on a range of digital projects over the course of the semester. Beyond regularly contributing to a course blog, students developed concepts for curating works of art from the Samek. They created …
Surveillance And Privacy In The Digital Age: A Primer For Public Relations, Robert Mcmahon
Surveillance And Privacy In The Digital Age: A Primer For Public Relations, Robert Mcmahon
Graduate Theses & Dissertations
The notion that “Big Brother Is Watching” has been around for decades, it is an often-used catchphrase to describe surveillance or privacy infringements. The evolution of the Internet, cellular networks and the growth of high speed connections worldwide has allowed an endless supply of devices to connect to this global network and produce an infinite supply of very specific, personal data. Without question these technological advancements have revolutionized industries and enhanced lives. However, the opportunity for “Big Brother” to watch has similarly evolved at a rapid pace. Not only is “Big Brother” watching, but he is also doing things with …

One of the greatest feats of evolutionary innovation, the amniotic egg, allowed vertebrate organisms more freedom from the aquatic environment by being able to place their eggs on land. Amniotes became a diverse group occupying a myriad of habitats around the globe. Over time, there have been multiple independent invasions of aquatic systems by terrestrial amniotes from a variety of taxa. Reptiles (the historically recognized group) are a diverse group of organisms with aquatic representative taxa on every continent except Antarctica. Within reptiles, the ophidia (snakes) are found all across the globe and in most aquatic habitats. There have been …
Spiny Lobster (Panulirus Interrtuptus) Use Of The Intertidal Zone At A Santa Catalina Island Mpa In Southern California, Sean C. Windell
Spiny Lobster (Panulirus Interrtuptus) Use Of The Intertidal Zone At A Santa Catalina Island Mpa In Southern California, Sean C. Windell
SNS Master's Theses
This study investigated spiny lobster (Panulirus interruptus) use of the intertidal habitat as an important and underappreciated foraging ground during the reproductive season, and the spatial scales over which lobsters interacted with this habitat at two locations off Santa Catalina Island, California. At Bird Rock and Big Fisherman Cove, there were significantly higher densities of lobsters within the intertidal zone at night compared to the adjacent subtidal zone, as well as a higher density of reproductively active (eggcarrying) females, suggesting the non-trivial use of this habitat. Spiny lobster density, size, sex ratio (in favor of females), and reproductive condition were …

The Incredible Shrinking Dewlap: Signal Size, Skin Elasticity, And Mechanical Design In The Green Anole Lizard (Anolis Carolinensis), Simon P. Lailvaux, Jack Leifer, Bonnie K. Kircher, Michele A. Johnson
Biology Faculty Research
The expression of male secondary sexual traits can be dynamic, changing size, shape, color, or structure over the course of different seasons. However, the factors underlying such changes are poorly understood. In male Anolis carolinensis lizards, a morphological secondary sexual signal called the dewlap changes size seasonally within individuals. Here, we test the hypothesis that seasonal changes in male dewlap size are driven by increased use and extension of the dewlap in spring and summer, when males are breeding, relative to the winter and fall. We captured male green anole lizards prior to the onset of breeding and constrained the …

This Is Not About Cows: Historic And Contemporary Challenges To South-Central Madagascar’S Cattle Systems, Dan Myers
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Madagascar’s most cattle-dependent regions have, in recent years, been surrounded by narratives of a sudden and violent decline in both the sheer number of and benefits conferred by the nation’s distinctive zebu cattle, narratives which largely attribute this decline to theft and insecurity. This paper examines the broader state of cattle-based livelihoods in two such regions, Haute Matsiatra and Ihorombe, through evidence garnered from semi-structured interviews conducted over three weeks in the major cattle market towns of Ambalavao and Ihosy, and in the rural commune of Sakaviro, five kilometers south of Ambalavao. By incorporating secondary historical sources and recent work …
