Les Unions Entre Gens De Même Sexe Ou De Sexe Différent En Droit Chinois : Perspective Historique, Yuan Fang Oct 2015

Les Unions Entre Gens De Même Sexe Ou De Sexe Différent En Droit Chinois : Perspective Historique, Yuan Fang

Journal of Civil Law Studies

While putting emphasis on the legalization of unions between same-sex individuals, the present paper has to address heterosexual unions as they are the norm in China. The evolution of matrimonial law is explored following a chronological order, without omitting the longstanding existence of cohabitation in Chinese history, the evolution of the social status of women, as well as the legal issues related to the idea of marriage in its current definition. The situation of same-sex couples is then studied, with a focus on its social recognition throughout history, as well as on the present situation, and on the legal expectations …

Stress Granules Modulate Syk To Cause Microglial Cell Dysfunction In Alzheimer's Disease, Soumira Ghosh, Robert Geahlen Oct 2015

Stress Granules Modulate Syk To Cause Microglial Cell Dysfunction In Alzheimer's Disease, Soumira Ghosh, Robert Geahlen

Borch Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology Faculty Publications

Microglial cells in the brains of Alzheimer's patients are known to be recruited to amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques where they exhibit an activated phenotype, but are defective for plaque removal by phagocytosis. In this study, we show that microglia stressed by exposure to sodium arsenite or Aβ(1–42) peptides or fibrils form ex- tensive stress granules (SGs) to which the tyrosine kinase, SYK, is recruited. SYK enhances the formation of SGs, is active within the resulting SGs and stimulates the production of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species that are toxic to neuronal cells. This sequestration of SYK inhibits the ability of microglial …

Pat4 Levels Control Amino-Acid Sensitivity Of Rapamycin-Resistant Mtorc1 From The Golgi And Affect Clinical Outcome In Colorectal Cancer, S-J Fan, C Snell, H Turley, J-L Li, Et Al Oct 2015

Pat4 Levels Control Amino-Acid Sensitivity Of Rapamycin-Resistant Mtorc1 From The Golgi And Affect Clinical Outcome In Colorectal Cancer, S-J Fan, C Snell, H Turley, J-L Li, Et Al

Peninsula Medical School

Tumour cells can use strategies that make them resistant to nutrient deprivation to outcompete their neighbours. A key integrator of the cell's responses to starvation and other stresses is amino-acid-dependent mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). Activation of mTORC1 on late endosomes and lysosomes is facilitated by amino-acid transporters within the solute-linked carrier 36 (SLC36) and SLC38 families. Here, we analyse the functions of SLC36 family member, SLC36A4, otherwise known as proton-assisted amino-acid transporter 4 (PAT4), in colorectal cancer. We show that independent of other major pathological factors, high PAT4 expression is associated with reduced relapse-free survival after colorectal …

Who Are You Calling Irrational?, Aneil Kovvali Oct 2015

Who Are You Calling Irrational?, Aneil Kovvali

NULR Online

In the review, Kovvali discusses and critiques certain philosophical underpinnings of "nudges." Nudges are small interventions that change the context in which decisions are made, thus encouraging individuals to make specific choices. Using an analogy to voting paradoxes, Kovvali shows that nudges exploit a type of irrationality that results when citizens attempt to reconcile inconsistent objectives, and concludes that while insights about irrationality are useful when government officials ask how to design an intervention, they often do not provide a convincing justification for why an intervention is needed.

Using An Agent-Based Model To Study The Effect Of Reproductive Skew On Mongoose Populations, Stacy Lee Mowry Oct 2015

Using An Agent-Based Model To Study The Effect Of Reproductive Skew On Mongoose Populations, Stacy Lee Mowry

Theses and Dissertations

Reproductive skew is the name given to the unequal partitioning of breeding

within social groups. Within these groups a mating hierarchy emerges wherein one dominant mating pair holds an unproportional majority of the group's reproductive benefit, while other members mate infrequently, yet allocate energy and resources toward the offspring of the dominant group members. In this paper, we use an agent-based model, which mimics dwarf and banded mongoose populations, to investigate how reproductive skew aftects the speed natural selection, and thus how reproductive skew affects fitness. The results of the model show that due to the geometric structure of skewed …

Mapping The Movement Of Overwintering Western Monarch Butterflies (Danaus Plexippus) At The Pismo Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove Using Arcgis Software, Brett Johnson, Jesse Wycko, Daniel Goldthwaite, Tyler Brown Oct 2015

Mapping The Movement Of Overwintering Western Monarch Butterflies (Danaus Plexippus) At The Pismo Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove Using Arcgis Software, Brett Johnson, Jesse Wycko, Daniel Goldthwaite, Tyler Brown

Symposium

Dr. Villablanca of the Cal Poly Biology Department commissioned this project with the goal of tracking Monarch Butterfly spatial redistribution in anticipation of or response to severe weather events. We believe that Monarchs cluster non-preferentially on introduced Eucalyptus trees until midwinter when they begin to cluster preferentially on native conifers. Based on the efforts of a previous group of students, it has been deter- mined that, over a two-week time period in mid-winter, Monarchs spend the majority of their time on native conifers. We set out to clearly demonstrate Monarch Butterfly spatial redistribution in either anticipation of or response to …

Observational Learning In Eusocial Insects: Chemical Transmission Of Information Between Rival Colonies Of Leafcutter Ants, Avity Norman Oct 2015

Observational Learning In Eusocial Insects: Chemical Transmission Of Information Between Rival Colonies Of Leafcutter Ants, Avity Norman

Symposium

Like other ants (Hymenoptera, Formicidae), leafcutter ants of the genus Atta use chemical signals, including airborne pheromones and cuticular hydrocarbons, to coordinate extraordinarily complex eusocial organization. This genus is ecologically and economically important because of its extreme impact on vegetation throughout the Neotropics, and also lends itself well to ethological research because of its easily observed and manipulated foraging behavior. Saverschek et al. (2010) used fungicide-treated leaves to induce an avoidance response to certain types of leaves, demonstrating that colonies of Atta columbica are capable of experiential learning and long-term memory. The proposed study will use similar methods to determine …

Protocols For Cleaning And Articulating Large Mammal Skeleton, Brandon Rowley Oct 2015

Protocols For Cleaning And Articulating Large Mammal Skeleton, Brandon Rowley

Symposium

This protocol will refer to Panthera tigris as an example for each cleaning method and articulation because that was the organism subject to this procedure. However, the processes and methods discussed here can be used as reference for any large mammal. The key is to make sure the skeleton is clean, which entails removing the meat from the bones, degreasing, and whitening. Once this is done, articulation can begin. The protocol is divided into three major sections: cleaning the skeleton, whitening and degreasing, and articulation. The cleaning section contains three contemporary methods for removing tissue. Each method can be performed …

Size And Abundance Of Pismo Clams In The Intertidal And Subtidal, Jenny Greene Oct 2015

Size And Abundance Of Pismo Clams In The Intertidal And Subtidal, Jenny Greene

Symposium

Pismo clams, Tivela stultorum, were observed at Rincon Beach, CA to find patterns of abundance and size distribution along a depth gradient from the intertidal, where recreational clammers have access on foot, to the subtidal, where clammers only have access with more specialized snorkeling or SCUBA equipment. Size and abundance patterns were compared between the intertidal and subtidal regions. A heuristic model was created to predict the effects of predation and wave action on clam density. Clam abundance was significantly greater in the intertidal than the subtidal and displayed a Gaussian distribution across the entire distance sampled. While Pismo clam …

Reactive Oxygen Species-Mediated Neurodegeneration Is Independent Of The Ryanodine Receptor In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Lyndsay E.A. Young, Daniel C. Williams Oct 2015

Reactive Oxygen Species-Mediated Neurodegeneration Is Independent Of The Ryanodine Receptor In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Lyndsay E.A. Young, Daniel C. Williams

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Despite the significant impacts on human health caused by neurodegeneration, our understanding of the degeneration process is incomplete. The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans is emerging as a genetic model organism well suited for identification of conserved cellular mechanisms and molecular pathways of neurodegeneration. Studies in the worm have identified factors that contribute to neurodegeneration, including excitotoxicity and stress due to reactive oxygen species (ROS). Disruption of the gene unc-68, which encodes the ryanodine receptor, abolishes excitotoxic cell death, indicating a role for calcium (Ca2+) signaling in neurodegeneration. We tested the requirement for unc-68 in ROS-mediated neurodegeneration using the …

Putting It On The Line: Social Justice Frameworks For Human Rights Fieldwork (Abstract), Michael Loadenthal Oct 2015

Putting It On The Line: Social Justice Frameworks For Human Rights Fieldwork (Abstract), Michael Loadenthal

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

Research methodology is often understood as a dry, sterile arena of IRB forms and transcription. While this is a common portrayal, things get a fair bit livelier when our field work runs amuck of extrajudicial assassinations, police infiltration and academic isolationism. Investigating social movements and individual respondents who are actively engaged in criminality presents challenging dilemmas to researchers attempting to gain respond trust while simultaneous avoid repressive State security forces. In this discussion, I will examine two venues in which this difficult navigation surfaced: ethnographically investigating Palestinian armed fighters (Nablus: 2006-2007), and interviewing clandestine Animal Liberation Front (ALF) activists (UK: …

Enhancing Education Through Digitization, Jessica Muetterties Oct 2015

Enhancing Education Through Digitization, Jessica Muetterties

Kaleidoscope

As technology becomes more a part of everyday life, it is increasingly important that future and current educators learn how to integrate the use of technology into day-to-day classroom activities. Teachers must learn to embrace the fact that computers and other aspects of technology are used by children everyday; the classroom needs to incorporate new and emerging technology. In this essay, I describe my experiences as an education major working in a research laboratory in Computer Science at the University of Kentucky. My work in the lab taught me how to digitize, process, and prepare on-line presentations of a variety …

Incidence Of West Nile Virus In House Sparrow Nestlings In Relation To Parental Effort, Natalie Mickelsen Oct 2015

Incidence Of West Nile Virus In House Sparrow Nestlings In Relation To Parental Effort, Natalie Mickelsen

Kaleidoscope

The house sparrow, Passer domesticus, is known to be an important host of West Nile (WN) virus and may contribute to the transmission of WN virus to humans. However, little is known about the factors that influence the occurrence of WN virus in birds. I conducted a study to determine if parental care was related to the rates of WN virus infections among nestling birds. I observed house sparrow nests for one hour periods noting the time the male and female parent spent on the nest box, in the nest box, and the number of food trips, as measures …

Interpreting "Enhancement Of Survival" In Granting Section 10 Endangered Species Act Exemptions To Animal Exhibitors, Anne Haas

Pace Environmental Law Review

Managing endangered species in captivity presents a unique set of problems. Despite their enormous potential to preserve species in the wild - through captive breeding programs, conservation initiatives, and environmental advocacy - many facilities are lagging behind. Part II of this note discusses the evolution of zoos from ancient Egyptian displays of wealth to modern day conservation and education centers. Focusing on the Endangered Species Act, Part III introduces various laws protecting captive animals. Part IV discusses the great potential of zoos to preserve species and the ecosystems on which they rely, while acknowledging the diverse nature of animal exhibitors …

A Sitting Duck: Local Government Regulation Of Hunting And Weapons Discharge In The State Of New York, Gary E. Kalbaugh Oct 2015

A Sitting Duck: Local Government Regulation Of Hunting And Weapons Discharge In The State Of New York, Gary E. Kalbaugh

Pace Environmental Law Review

On March 31, 2014, the New York State Legislature significantly modified New York's Environmental Conservation Law. The Environmental Conservation Law imposes limitations on the discharge of longbows. A longbow is defined by New York's Department of Environmental Conservation as “a longbow, recurve bow or compound bow which is designed to be used by holding the bow at arm's length, with arrow on the string, and which is drawn, pulled and released by hand or with the aid of a hand-held trigger device attached to the bowstring.”

Before the 2014 amendment, longbows could not be discharged in such a way that …

The Curious Untidiness Of Property & Ecosystem Services: A Hybrid Method Of Measuring Place, John Page, Ann Brower, Johannes Welsch Oct 2015

The Curious Untidiness Of Property & Ecosystem Services: A Hybrid Method Of Measuring Place, John Page, Ann Brower, Johannes Welsch

Pace Environmental Law Review

Theoretically, this paper builds on ideas of ecosystem services (ES) in landscapes, property theories of plurality and marginality, and the legal geography of localized place. Methodologically, we will explore three divergent ways of measuring ES in a propertied landscape. Substantively, combining property theory and spatial methods in this way will allow for future consideration of property arrangements that might be more optimal and representative of contextualized place.

Part II presents the qualitative method--a narrative description of the flow of resources and services across a transect from the mountains to the sea. Narrative is effective in describing the aesthetics and indelibly …
