The Effects Of Modafinil And Atomoxetine On Dopamine Signaling In The Striatal Subregions Of The Rat, Martin Bobak

Theses and Dissertations

In an effort to combat diseases and disorders that impede our health, comfort and well-being, an abundance of prescription drugs have emerged in the past 60 years. Many prescription drugs have remarkable efficacy for treating the primary symptoms of these diseases and disorders; however, some drugs carry negative side effects that impose their own adverse symptoms, albeit, often to a lesser degree than the primary symptoms. Thus, one of the main objectives of the pharmaceutical industry is to innovate and develop novel therapeutics, which remediate the primary symptoms of disease and lack undesirable negative side effects. However, in order to …

Faculty Publications

Sedentary behavior (SB) is a major contributing factor to obesity and significant morbidity and mortality in adolescence and into adulthood, yet measuring SB is difficult. The purpose of this study was to assess the degree of construct validity of the ActiGraph GT3X+ inclinometer function and accelerometry metrics in objectively measuring SB and physical activity in young adult university students while performing semi-structured activities: lying, sitting, reading, playing seated video gaming, video watching, seated conversation, standing, stationary biking, and walking. These nine activities were objectively assessed using inclinometry and four output metrics from the ActiGraph based on the axis used to …

Modified Atmosphere Packaging: A Progressive Technology For Shelf-Life Extension Of Fruits And Vegetables, Mahmoud Soltani, Reza Alimardani, Hossein Mobli, Seyed Saeid Mohtasebi

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

Packaging and storage are the final phases in the food industry. Quality preservation, improving safety and reduction of postharvest losses waste are some objectives of the packaging engineering. One of techniques that widely used in packaging of fruits and vegetables are modified atmosphere packaging (MAP). In MAP for fresh fruits and vegetable the air of packaging headspace replaces with a predetermined atmospheric gases different in proportion from that of air. Oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen are the main gases used in MAP for injection to the headspace of pack. The choice and ratio of gases are very dependent upon the …

Caribou, Petroleum, And The Limits Of Locality In The Canada–Us Borderlands, Jenny Kerber Oct 2015

Caribou, Petroleum, And The Limits Of Locality In The Canada–Us Borderlands, Jenny Kerber

English and Film Studies Faculty Publications

his article discusses Karsten Heuer’s 2006 book Being Caribou in light of debates in ecocriticism and border studies about how to define the local in the context of environmental problems of vast range and uncertain temporality. It explores how Heuer’s book about following the Porcupine Caribou herd’s migration engages in multiple forms of boundary crossing—between countries, between hemispheric locations, and between species—and shows how insights from Indigenous storytelling complicate the book’s appeal to environmentalist readers by asserting a prior, transnational Indigenous presence in the transboundary landscapes of present-day Alaska and the Yukon.

Carolyn Tillman interviews Constance Lexion, a woman who made remarkable nutritional changes in Southern California. Lexion starts with some background of her life, in which she says she went to Pasadena City College and later to California State College Long Beach. She talks about how her skills working in the Ten-State Nutrition Survey landed her job working in the 4-H program and work in San Bernardino. The interviewee goes on to detail 4-H’s origin, and how the program originated from a Land Grant in 1914 from the USDA that was expanded by the University of California and counties. When asked …

Understanding The Alternative Splicing-Regulated Transcriptomic Changes During Mouse Retinal Development And Disease Through Global And Gene-Centric Approaches, Devi Krishna Priya Karunakaran Oct 2015

Understanding The Alternative Splicing-Regulated Transcriptomic Changes During Mouse Retinal Development And Disease Through Global And Gene-Centric Approaches, Devi Krishna Priya Karunakaran

Doctoral Dissertations

Alternative splicing (AS) is an important layer of gene regulation and has been shown to control various cellular processes including splicing, mRNA export, translation and cell cycle. Mis-regulation in AS has been implicated in many diseases. But, the role of AS in the retinal development and diseases remains unexplored. To this end, I employed a two-pronged approach, (i.e), gene-centric approach and an en-mass transcriptome analysis approach to address this question. For the first approach, I studied the role of an alternative splicing factor, Sfrs10 and a kinase, Citron Kinase (CitK) and its spliced isoforms in murine retinal …

Distributed Encoding Of Spatial And Object Categories In Primate Hippocampal Microcircuits, Ioan Opris, Lucas M. Santos, Greg A. Gerhardt, Dong Song, Theodore W. Berger, Robert E. Hampson, Sam A. Deadwyler

Neuroscience Faculty Publications

The primate hippocampus plays critical roles in the encoding, representation, categorization and retrieval of cognitive information. Such cognitive abilities may use the transformational input-output properties of hippocampal laminar microcircuitry to generate spatial representations and to categorize features of objects, images, and their numeric characteristics. Four nonhuman primates were trained in a delayed-match-to-sample (DMS) task while multi-neuron activity was simultaneously recorded from the CA1 and CA3 hippocampal cell fields. The results show differential encoding of spatial location and categorization of images presented as relevant stimuli in the task. Individual hippocampal cells encoded visual stimuli only on specific types of trials in …

Optics Of Cone Photoreceptors In The Chicken (Gallus Gallus Domesticus), David Wilby, Matthew B Toomey, Peter Olsson, Rikard Frederiksen, M Carter Cornwall, Ruth Oulton, Almut Kelber, Joseph C Corbo, Nicholas W Roberts

2010-2019 OA Pubs

Vision is the primary sensory modality of birds, and its importance is evident in the sophistication of their visual systems. Coloured oil droplets in the cone photoreceptors represent an adaptation in the avian retina, acting as long-pass colour filters. However, we currently lack understanding of how the optical properties and morphology of component structures (e.g. oil droplet, mitochondrial ellipsoid and outer segment) of the cone photoreceptor influence the transmission of light into the outer segment and the ultimate effect they have on receptor sensitivity. In this study, we use data from microspectrophotometry, digital holographic microscopy and electron microscopy to inform …

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications

Glioblastoma, one of the most aggressive forms of brain cancer, is featured by high tumor cell motility and invasiveness, which not only fuel tumor infiltration, but also enable escape from surgical or other clinical interventions. Thus, better understanding of how these malignant traits are controlled will be key to the discovery of novel biomarkers and therapies against this deadly disease. Tetraspanin CD151 and its associated α3β1 integrin have been implicated in facilitating tumor progression across multiple cancer types. How these adhesion molecules are involved in the progression of glioblastoma, however, remains largely unclear. Here, we examined an in-house tissue microarray-based …

Can Non-Haptic Manipulation Of Temperature Influence The Same Emotions As Ostracism?, Rebecca Ann Oglesby Oct 2015

Can Non-Haptic Manipulation Of Temperature Influence The Same Emotions As Ostracism?, Rebecca Ann Oglesby

Theses and Dissertations

I explored the possibility that temperature can alter the same variables affected by ostracism (i.e., being ignored and excluded): belonging, control, meaningful existence, and self-esteem need satisfaction, feelings of ostracism, mood, and loneliness. According to the theory of embodied cognition, individuals can associate physical warmth with social intimacy, as well as cold temperatures with social isolation (Zhong & Leonardelli, 2008; IJzerman et al., 2012). Bargh and Shalev (2012) found that participants holding a cold pack reported higher loneliness than participants holding a neutral or warm pack. My study expands upon Bargh and Shalevâ??s (2012) findings by examining more emotions frequently …

Exploring The Dark Side: Investigating The Relationship Between Creativity And Perceptions Of Dishonesty, Kiera Michelle Dymit Oct 2015

Exploring The Dark Side: Investigating The Relationship Between Creativity And Perceptions Of Dishonesty, Kiera Michelle Dymit

Theses and Dissertations

Previous studies have reported a connection between creativity and dishonesty (Beaussart, Andrews, & Kaufman, 2013; Gino & Ariely, 2012; Gino & Wiltermuth, 2014). This study attempts to investigate these finding further, and empirically connect the number of justifications provided or produced for a dishonest behavior to the perceived acceptability of the behavior. 203 participants were given two tasks involving evaluating and justifying dishonest behavior. Those who scored high on the Creative Behavior Inventory were able to produce significantly more justifications overall, but not those who scored high on the Creative Personality Scale. The total number of justifications produced was correlated …
