After The Prestige: A Postmodern Analysis Of Penn And Teller, Liz Miller, Joseph Zompetti
After The Prestige: A Postmodern Analysis Of Penn And Teller, Liz Miller, Joseph Zompetti
Faculty Publications - Communications
By mocking the magic community and revealing the secret behind some of their tricks, Penn and Teller perform a kind of parodic and post-modern “anti-magic.” Penn and Teller display an artful use of rhetoric; in exposing the secrets and shortcomings of conjuring, they are revolutionizing the way people think about both the art of magic and the magic community. Individuals such as Penn and Teller may use parody to subvert the hegemonic interpretations. However, we also know that it is difficult to bring down a system while operating within that system. Thus, this article explores the way Penn and Teller …

Sea-Ice Habitat Preference Of The Pacific Walrus (Odobenus Rosmarus Divergens) In The Bering Sea: A Multiscaled Approach, Alexander Edward Sacco
Sea-Ice Habitat Preference Of The Pacific Walrus (Odobenus Rosmarus Divergens) In The Bering Sea: A Multiscaled Approach, Alexander Edward Sacco
Geosciences
The goal of this thesis is to define specific parameters of mesoscale sea-ice seascapes for which walruses show preference during important periods of their natural history. This research thesis incorporates sea-ice geophysics, marine-mammal ecology, remote sensing, computer vision techniques, and traditional ecological knowledge of indigenous subsistence hunters in order to quantitatively study walrus preference of sea ice during the spring migration in the Bering Sea. Using an approach that applies seascape ecology, or landscape ecology to the marine environment, our goal is to define specific parameters of ice-patch descriptors and mesoscale seascapes in order to evaluate and describe potential walrus …
Space Use And Movements Of Moose Hunters And Wolves In The Yukon Flats, Alaska, Ian Johnson
Space Use And Movements Of Moose Hunters And Wolves In The Yukon Flats, Alaska, Ian Johnson
Biological Sciences
Within the Yukon Flats, Alaska, subsistence communities utilize moose (Alces alces) as a primary resource (78% of households) and wolves (Canis lupus) hunt them as an obligatory prey item. Hence, understanding the potential of direct or indirect competition between wolves and humans is useful for managers. In Chapter 1, I used a novel approach utilizing spatially-linked interviews to quantify the distance subsistence users were traveling from communities and rivers to harvest moose in the Yukon Flats. My study was the first to quantify hunter access in the Arctic and may provide managers with a harvest estimation approach that may supplement …

The thesis paper is a map of my studio practice. It is meant to be a resource to help the viewer read my artwork. By laying out the tools of my practice the paper gives the reader a context on how I digest and synthesis works of art. These tools range from references to art history, architecture, and a grounding in traditional craftsmanship. The result is a culmination of influences that situate the work and give the reader an intimate understanding of the final art exhibition. With this map, the viewer can navigate the processes and contexts of the artwork.
Visual Artists Experiencing Nature: Examining Human-Environment Relationships, Amy Lynn Wiita
Visual Artists Experiencing Nature: Examining Human-Environment Relationships, Amy Lynn Wiita
Anthropology
Anthropology has a long history collaborating with artists to understand their artwork. However, little research exists in the discipline that focuses on artists as a group, their creative process, and what may influence that process. In particular, how artists use nature and place has not been studied; instead, anthropology has generally considered nature and place as merely a backdrop for culture rather than for its impact on cultural expression. Identification of diverse aspects of the interdependence of ecological and social systems can inform our understanding of how people address issues of environmental concern. Managers, scientists, creative people, and others working …
Wrestling, Archery, And Horse Racing In Buryatia: Traditional Sports Competitions And Social Change, Stefan Krist
Wrestling, Archery, And Horse Racing In Buryatia: Traditional Sports Competitions And Social Change, Stefan Krist
Anthropology
Sporting activities are examined in order to better understand a society's general socio-economic and political changes. The two basic research questions are the following: (1) Which economic, social, political, and cultural changes in and of the Buryat society were and are reflected in Buryat traditional sports? (2) How far and in which ways did and do Buryat traditional sports and the people engaged in them contribute to social change? Anthropological studies of play, games, and sport, an overview of which is presented in Chapter 1, have revealed that sports are closely linked and tightly entangled with the cultures and societies, …

IñUpiat Ilitqusiat: Inner Views Of Our IñUpiaq Values, Charles Sean Topkok
Indigenous Studies
Iñupiat Ilitqusiat: Inner Views of Our Iñupiaq Values examines how Iñupiat pass down elements of our cultural heritage to future generations. The research is community-driven by the Pavva Iñupiaq Dancers of Fairbanks, families with Iñupiaq children in their household, and other Iñupiat worldwide. My doctoral research addresses how we view each Iñupiat Ilitqusiat (Iñupiaq Values), how our Iñupiat Ilitqusiat have been passed down, and how we pass down our Iñupiaq cultural heritage to our future cultural-bearers. Participants talk about our Iñupiat Ilitqusiat to acknowledge that we are Iñupiat wherever we live. I assert that in order to conduct culturally appropriate …

This project is a response to what I noticed to be a challenge for both my ELL students and myself in multiple school settings--teaching and learning specific English grammar skills. Prior to beginning this program, over the past ten years I had the privilege of working in a number of schools--both internationally and stateside--teaching various ages/levels of ELL learners. It was, however, my time in rural Alaska that prompted me to seek out additional schooling for help in overcoming the challenges of teaching grammar skills.

Seasonal Movements And Habitat Use Of Rainbow Trout In The Susitna River Basin, Southcentral Alaska, Kevin Marshall Fraley
Seasonal Movements And Habitat Use Of Rainbow Trout In The Susitna River Basin, Southcentral Alaska, Kevin Marshall Fraley
Fisheries
Potamodromous Rainbow Trout are an important ecological and recreational resource in freshwater systems of Alaska, and increased human development, hydroelectric projects, declining Pacific salmon stocks, and climate change may threaten their populations. We used aerial and on-the-ground telemetry tracking, field-measured and remotely-sensed aquatic habitat characteristics, snorkel surveys, and resource selection and occupancy models to characterize seasonal movements and habitat use of adult Rainbow Trout (>400 mm FL) at multiple spatial and temporal scales across the large (31,221 km²) and complex Susitna River basin of southcentral Alaska during 2003-2004 and 2013-2014. We found that trout overwintered in mainstem habitats near …
Resource Competition, Space Use And Forage Ecology Of Sea Otters, Enhydra Lutris, In Southern Southeast Alaska, Zachary N. Hoyt
Resource Competition, Space Use And Forage Ecology Of Sea Otters, Enhydra Lutris, In Southern Southeast Alaska, Zachary N. Hoyt
Fisheries
The growing sea otter population in southern Southeast Alaska is impacting commercial shellfish, through foraging and expanding in range and abundance except where hunted for subsistence. Sea otters and their prey have coexisted in the North Pacific Ocean for approximately 750,000 years, but due to exploitation of sea otters from the 1770s until 1911, the species became extinct over much of its range, including southern Southeast Alaska. Subsequently, invertebrate species flourished and were commercially targeted in the late 1900s. Sea otters were relocated (n = 106) to southern Southeast Alaska in 1968. In this dissertation, I evaluated this marine mammal-fisheries …
The Effects Of Dietary Essential Fatty Acid Enrichment On The Nutrition And Condition Of Red King Crab (Paralithodes Camtschaticus) Larvae, Asia Beder
Fisheries
Alaska red king crab (Paralithodes camtschaticus) is a commercially valuable crab species in Alaska; however, six of the nine red king crab stocks in Alaska are depleted and have failed to recover even after closures of the fisheries. Hatchery rearing is being explored as a possibility for rehabilitating these stocks. In Chapter 1, I review the importance of diet, particularly fatty acids (FAs), when raising crustacean larvae in hatcheries. Long-chain polyunsaturated FAs (PUFAs) are important in molting success, growth, ability to handle stress, and overall survival of crustaceans. Specifically, when the FAs docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3), …
Physiological Effects Of The Parasite Ichthyophonus On Spawning Chinook Salmon And Their Offspring In A Yukon River Tributary, Theresa Floyd-Rump
Physiological Effects Of The Parasite Ichthyophonus On Spawning Chinook Salmon And Their Offspring In A Yukon River Tributary, Theresa Floyd-Rump
Fisheries
In recent years, Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha returns to the Yukon River, Alaska, have been substantially reduced. In summer 2010-2012, spawning Chinook salmon (n=51, 32, and 23, respectively) were collected from the Salcha River, a tributary of the Yukon River, to determine the effects of Ichthyophonus, a protozoan parasite, on salmon reproductive success. Eggs and milt from Ichthyophonus-infected and non-infected parents were collected in 2010 and cross-fertilized to investigate offspring survival and potential second-generation effects induced by the parasite. Proximate composition analysis of adult muscle, eggs, and alevins, and blood chemistry analysis of adult blood plasma and alevin whole body …
Sound And Human Impacts On Beluga Whales In Cook Inlet, Alaska, Rachael E. Blevins
Sound And Human Impacts On Beluga Whales In Cook Inlet, Alaska, Rachael E. Blevins
Fisheries
Cook Inlet beluga whales (CIBs) are a geographically and genetically isolated population residing in Cook Inlet, Alaska year round. The population declined by approximately 50% between 1994 and 1998 and was listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act in 2008. The original decline was attributed to overharvest; however, the population has failed to rebound despite the virtual absence of harvest since 1998. This suggests that other factors, such as declining prey availability, increased predation, contaminants, disease, climate change, catastrophic events, habitat loss, unauthorized take, and underwater noise pollution, may be limiting the population's recovery. The goal of this dissertation …

Multi-Resolution Changes In The Spatial Extent Of Perennial Arctic Alpine Snow And Ice Fields With Potential Archaeological Significance In The Central Brooks Range, Alaska, Molly E. Tedesche, Adam K. Freeburg, Jeffrey T. Rasic, Christopher Ciancibelli, Steven R. Fassnacht
Research Posters
Perennial snow and ice fields could be important archaeological and paleoecological resources for Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve in the central Brooks Range of Alaska. These features may have cultural significance, as prehistoric artifacts may be frozen within the snow and ice. They also act as important hydrological indicators of climate change within the Park. Globally significant discoveries have been made recently as ancient artifacts and animal dung have been found in melting alpine snow and ice patches in the Southern Yukon (Hare et al. 2004) and Northwest Territories (Meulendyk et al. 2012) in Canada, as well …

The Ecological Importance Of Brachiopods Versus Bivalves In The Paleozoic: Taphonomy, Biomass, And Energy Use, Shannon (Shin-Nan) Hsieh
The Ecological Importance Of Brachiopods Versus Bivalves In The Paleozoic: Taphonomy, Biomass, And Energy Use, Shannon (Shin-Nan) Hsieh
Master's Theses
Brachiopods have commonly been considered more important than bivalves in Paleozoic ecosystems due to their greater global diversity and greater abundance in many fossil assemblages. New sampling-standardized diversity curves verify that brachiopods were more diverse than bivalves at the global level in the Paleozoic; they declined in the Permian-Triassic extinction, largely recovered, then faded away later in the Mesozoic. However, the subordinate ecological status of bivalves within local Paleozoic ecosystems has been challenged on two fronts. First, bivalve abundance may be underestimated due to preferential dissolution of aragonitic shells. Second, bivalve contribution to ecosystem function may be underestimated by abundance …

"I Don't Think Of All The Misery, But Of The Beauty That Still Remains": Holocaust Education In The Music Classroom, Kathryn Eileen Stiadle
Honors Theses
On June 26, 2014, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett signed a law requiring mandatory Holocaust and Genocide education in all Pennsylvania schools. This legislation, the result of efforts made by Holocaust author and advocated Rhonda Fink-Whitman, made Pennsylvania the sixth state to require Holocaust and Genocide education. However, the law does not state how to teach about this rather difficult topic. According to anthropologist and ethnomusicologist Alan Merriam, one of the functions of music in any society is "emotional expression." Because music gives us the ability to convey emotions in a way that speech perhaps cannot, it is a beneficial tool …
