The Preservation Of A Way Of Life: A Look At The Sustainability Of Family-Operated Ranches, Hannah M. Austin Nov 2015

The Preservation Of A Way Of Life: A Look At The Sustainability Of Family-Operated Ranches, Hannah M. Austin

Senior Honors Theses

Ranching – the breeding, raising, and selling of cattle – is one of the long-established occupations of the American workforce. This labor-intensive industry is confronted with the struggles of fierce industry competition, government regulation, and a fluctuating market. As a result of the evolution of the industry and alteration of the ranching demographic, ranchers are being forced to restructure their profession. This thesis seeks to explore the many factors that affect sustainability of small family-operated ranches in the United States, as well as to investigate the alternative business models left to ranchers with which they can salvage their way of …

Elie, Oscar Gonzalo, Daniel Ramírez De Mingo, Mercedes Sanaú, Roberto Sánchez-Delgado, Tanmoy Sadhukha, Swayam Prabha, Joe W. Ramos, Isabel Marzo, María Contel

Publications and Research

A series of organometallic ruthenium(II) complexes containing iminophosphorane ligands have been synthesized and characterized. Cationic compounds with chloride as counterion are soluble in water (70–100 mg/mL). Most compounds (especially highly water-soluble 2) are more cytotoxic to a number of human cancer cell lines than cisplatin. Initial mechanistic studies indicate that the cell death type for these compounds is mainly through canonical or caspase-dependent apoptosis, nondependent on p53, and that the compounds do not interact with DNA or inhibit protease cathepsin B. In vivo experiments of 2 on MDA-MB-231 xenografts in NOD.CB17-Prkdc SCID/J mice showed an impressive tumor reduction (shrinkage) of …

A Multiscale Systems Model For Advancement Of A New Line Of Therapy For Osteoporosis, Rena J. Eudy Nov 2015

A Multiscale Systems Model For Advancement Of A New Line Of Therapy For Osteoporosis, Rena J. Eudy

Doctoral Dissertations

The osteocyte is a load-sensing bone cell, which plays a pivotal role in the bone modeling process. This process is highly regulated by feedback control and poorly described by isolated in vivo or in vitro experiments. In silico systems models present a way by which experimental and clinical data can be integrated in a mathematical framework so that physiology, pharmacology and disease progression as it relates to bone health, at the level of cell signaling networks up to the tissue level, can can be better understood. The Multiscale Systems Pharmacology Model presented here began as an endeavor to link biological …

A Gadamerian Analysis Of Roman Catholic Hermeneutics: A Diachronic Analysis Of Interpretations Of Romans 1:17-2:17, Steven Floyd Surrency Nov 2015

A Gadamerian Analysis Of Roman Catholic Hermeneutics: A Diachronic Analysis Of Interpretations Of Romans 1:17-2:17, Steven Floyd Surrency

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Catholic exegesis of scriptural and dogmatic statements has become rigid in the period following the Enlightenment. Gadamer’s account of philosophical hermeneutics, when applied to the Catholic situation, elaborates how Catholic exegesis might return to its premodern, freer form. Following Gadamer, I hold that to understand is to fuse the horizon of the old with today’s horizon using the preunderstandings that have been provided by the tradition while at the same time bringing the questions of today into dialogue with the text.

Examples of how Romans 1 and 2 have been interpreted historically serve to support this thesis. Origen reads Romans …

Characterization Of Two Novel Gene Regulatory Systems In The Zoonotic Bacterium Bartonella Henselae, Nhan Tu Nov 2015

Characterization Of Two Novel Gene Regulatory Systems In The Zoonotic Bacterium Bartonella Henselae, Nhan Tu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The genus Bartonella contains Gram-negative arthropod-borne bacteria that are found in many small animal reservoirs and are capable of causing human disease. Bacteria utilize a general stress response system to combat stresses from their surrounding environments. In α-proteobacteria, the general stress response system uses an alternate σ factor as the main regulator and incorporates it with a two-component system into a unique system. Our study identifies the general stress response system in the α-proteobacterium, Bartonella henselae, where the gene synteny is conserved and both the PhyR and alternate σ factor have similar sequence and domain structures with other α-proteobacteria. …

Mass Spectrometry-Based Investigation Of App-Dependent Mechanisms In Neurodegeneration, Dale Chaput Nov 2015

Mass Spectrometry-Based Investigation Of App-Dependent Mechanisms In Neurodegeneration, Dale Chaput

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most prevalent form of dementia affecting the elderly, and as the aging population increases the social and economic burden of AD grows substantially. Pathological hallmarks of AD include the accumulation of extracellular amyloid plaques and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs), as well as significant neuron loss. Amyloid plaques consist of aggregated amyloid beta (Aβ) peptide, which is generated from the proteolytic processing of amyloid precursor protein (APP) in addition to several other peptides. While the processing of APP has been characterized, its primary physiological function and its involvement in AD pathology are poorly understood. Developing a …

A Comparative Analysis Of Portable X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry And Stable Isotopes In Assessing Ancient Coastal Peruvian Diets, Theresa Jane Gilbertson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores a cross-cultural analysis of the dietary signatures of four coastal cultures of prehistoric Peru. A combination of elemental analysis based on portable x-ray fluorescence spectrometry (pXRF), testing trace elements presented in 209 individuals’ skulls representing the Nazca (38), Cañete (33), Lima (40), and Moche (98) valleys and/or cultures of the first millennium AD, is weighed in conjunction with isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) to analyze human bone collagen and bone apatite derived from a portion of the individuals represented in the Nazca, Cañete, and Lima cranial samples.

Evidence from the results of both tests are weighed using …

Space – The Final Frontier, Sandy Fitzgerald

The ITB Journal

This paper ranges over a number of questions to do with the seemingly general sense of anxiety and discontent about life at this time, a time when we should be enjoying the embarrassment of riches heaped upon us in the West. Certainly, here in Ireland, we have experienced unprecedented wealth over the past ten years and yet you would be hard pressed to find a positive voice. Why is this? And how are we to turn this state of affairs around? My own work, over a thirty-year period, has engaged with the social, cultural and arts world and so these …
