Is the Church losing the next generation of young people? Jonathan P. Hill critically examines this question, interpreting sociological data that takes into account the broader cultural and historical context. He challenges common assumptions and draws conclusions that are counterintuitive, complex, and encouraging.
Naturalism, Causality, And Nietzsche's Conception Of Science, Justin Remhof
Naturalism, Causality, And Nietzsche's Conception Of Science, Justin Remhof
Philosophy Faculty Publications
There is a disagreement over how to understand Nietzsche’s view of science. According to what I call the Negative View, Nietzsche thinks science should be reconceived or superseded by another discourse, such as art, because it is nihilistic. By contrast, what I call the Positive View holds that Nietzsche does not think science is nihilistic, so he denies that it should be reinterpreted or overcome. Interestingly, defenders of each position can appeal to Nietzsche’s understanding of naturalism to support their interpretation. I argue that Nietzsche embraces a social constructivist conception of causality that renders his naturalism incompatible with the views …
Dividing Nature By The Joints, Chad Wiener
Dividing Nature By The Joints, Chad Wiener

Most scholars of Aristotle’s biology have accepted the view of D. M. Balme and Pierre Pellegrin that the History of Animals is devoid of any systematic classification of animals. I challenge this reading. I show that Aristotle can produce a taxonomy of animals kinds that are found in the essences of atomic species, or, to borrow from Plato, divide nature by the joints. I start from Aristotle’s positive views of division stated in APo. II.13–14 and how they imply a taxonomic order of a genus. I then develop my interpretation of how Aristotle can divide nature by the joints in …

During spermiogenesis, the post-meiotic phase of mammalian spermatogenesis, transcription is progressively repressed as nuclei of haploid spermatids are compacted through a dramatic chromatin reorganization involving hyper-acetylation and replacement of most histones with protamines. Although BRDT functions in transcription and histone removal in spermatids, it is unknown whether other BET family proteins play a role. Immunofluorescence of spermatogenic cells revealed BRD4 in a ring around the nuclei of spermatids containing hyper-acetylated histones. The ring lies directly adjacent to the acroplaxome, the cytoskeletal base of the acrosome, previously linked to chromatin reorganization. The BRD4 ring does not form in acrosomal mutant mice. …

In addition, the internal links within Wikipedia along with the categories structure are also used to compute the relatedness between concepts. We evaluate the built framework and report its performance in the applications of word sense disambiguation and named entities matching. The system performance is compared …
Bull Optimization Algorithm Based On Genetic Operators For Continuous Optimization Problems, Oğuz Findik
Bull Optimization Algorithm Based On Genetic Operators For Continuous Optimization Problems, Oğuz Findik
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, the researcher proposes a new evolutionary optimization algorithm that depends on genetic operators such as crossover and mutation, referred to as the bull optimization algorithm (BOA). This new optimization algorithm is called the BOA because the best individual is used to produce offspring individuals. The selection algorithm used in the genetic algorithm (GA) is removed from the proposed algorithm. Instead of the selection algorithm, individuals initially produced attempt to achieve better individuals. In the proposed method, crossover operation is always performed by using the best individual. The mutation process is carried out by using individual positions. In …

A Comparative Analysis Of Membrane Intactness And Genome Integrity In Pea,Barley, And Wheat In Response To Uvc Irradiation, Mariyana Georgieva, Ivelina Nikolova, Georgi Bonchev, Zornitsa Katerova, Dessislava Todorova
Turkish Journal of Botany
The maintenance of plant genome integrity plays a critical function in the processes of DNA replication, transcription, and repair. Short-wave UV radiation (UVC) is among the most harmful agents known to affect genome stability and to induce DNA damage, including double-strand breaks (DSBs). Most previous studies in plants addressed the effects of UVC radiation at the physiological level; however, little research effort has been put into genome sensitivity across different plant species. Here, we made use of the trypan blue exclusion test and neutral comet assay to assess nuclear membrane and genome integrity in response to UVC radiation in monocot …
