Indonesian Teachers’ Implementation Of New Curriculum Initiatives In Relation To Teaching Writing In Lower Primary School, Sulfasyah, Yvonne Haig, Caroline Barratt-Pugh
Indonesian Teachers’ Implementation Of New Curriculum Initiatives In Relation To Teaching Writing In Lower Primary School, Sulfasyah, Yvonne Haig, Caroline Barratt-Pugh
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
This paper reports an investigation of teachers’ implementation of a new Indonesian curriculum, the Kurikulum Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan (KTSP), meaning school-based curriculum. The specific context chosen was the teaching of writing in Year 2 in the primary schools of Makassar City, Indonesia. The teachers’ implementation was examined through the lens of the KTSP’s key constructivist-based concepts. Using qualitative methods, the study found that the teachers’ implementation of the new writing curriculum reflected a traditional view of teaching, despite the intent of the KTSP to move away from this approach to one that better reflected a constructivist approach. The study also …

Intake Of Fat-Soluble Vitamins Among Undergraduate College Students Attending North Dakota State University, Samantha Erin Fuhrmann
Health Nutrition and Exercise Science
Fat-soluble vitamins are essential micronutrients that are critical in normal physiological processes. Deficiencies can pose increased risk of chronic diseases. This may be particularly important among college students, since the majority of this population is in peak phases of development. The purpose of this study was to determine intake of fat-soluble vitamins in 352 (212 males, 140 females) students. Students completed dietary analyses of their 72-hour food record, which were analyzed to determine if student intake met Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) recommendations. Additional analyses determined relationships between intake and gender, age, and frequency of attending a dining center. Few students …
Wetted Ice Bags: Does The Temperature Of The Water Added To The Ice Bag Really Matter?, Kelly Ann Shaner
Wetted Ice Bags: Does The Temperature Of The Water Added To The Ice Bag Really Matter?, Kelly Ann Shaner
Health Nutrition and Exercise Science
Currently, no consensus exists on how many degrees to decrease tissue temperature for a beneficial cryotherapy treatment, 1, 2 so it is accepted that colder tissue temperatures achieve more beneficial treatments. 3 There is evidence supporting the superiority of wetted ice bags over non-wetted ice bags for decreasing tissue temperature. Wetted ice bags can be further altered through changing the water temperature inside the bag. Thus, the water inside the bag would cause a phase change inside the modality; in turn, more heat transferred from the body to the modality, resulting in cooler skin temperatures. The purpose of this study …

The Effects Of Kids’ Cooking Camps On Native American Children’S Knowledge And Habits Related To Food Safety, Preparation, And Nutrition, Kelly Rose Burdett
Health Nutrition and Exercise Science
A pilot research study was conducted to determine if cooking camps could increase knowledge and improve habits of Native American children related to food safety, nutrition, and reported food and exercise habits. Forty Native American youth were recruited for participation in one of four kids’ cooking camps. Each child took a pre-assessment upon their arrival at camp and a post-assessment on the last day of camp, as well as a pre- and post-test for each lesson. The children participated in lessons and food preparation activities during the six hours per day, four day camp. The thirty subjects taking both the …
Connecting Science Education To A World In Crisis, Kenneth Tobin
Connecting Science Education To A World In Crisis, Kenneth Tobin
Publications and Research
Even though humanity faces grand challenges, including climate change, sustainability of the planet and its resources, and well-being of humans and other species, for the past 60 years science educators have been preoccupied with much the same priorities. Adherence to the tenets of crypto-positivism creates problems for research in the social sciences (e.g., over reliance on statistical analyses leads to oversimplified models that strip away context and are reductive). Hypotheses and associated statistical tests support causal models that rarely predict social conduct or blaze pathways for meaningful transformation. In contrast to the mainstream of research in science education, I advocate …
Understanding The Social Effects Of Water Intervention Implementation In Sub-Saharan Africa: A Qualitative Study In Kitui, Kenya, Tara Rava Zolnikov
Understanding The Social Effects Of Water Intervention Implementation In Sub-Saharan Africa: A Qualitative Study In Kitui, Kenya, Tara Rava Zolnikov
Human Development and Family Science
Global public health interventions focus on creating solutions to unaddressed humanitarian issues in developing countries; priority projects include providing communities with access to water, food, and healthcare. Nearby access to safe drinking water is a primary public health concern and a frequent public health intervention. Intervention success may depend on other factors in addition to health outcomes. However, previous research has focused solely on health effect outcomes and has not reviewed the impact of social effects from implemented water interventions. The purpose of this study was to understand the impacts of an implemented water intervention on social relationships among community …
The Impact Of Psychosocial Outcomes In Long-Term Bariatric Patients, Angela Ann Geraci
The Impact Of Psychosocial Outcomes In Long-Term Bariatric Patients, Angela Ann Geraci
Human Development and Family Science
The disease of obesity is a serious and significant public health epidemic affecting more than 78 million Americans. The increase in human life expectancy also increases the chance of reduced quality of life and well-being by those suffering from obesity. Obesity–related factors may mean years of physical and psychosocial discomfort, lack of mobility, and chronic ill health. This study analyzed long-term bariatric patient outcomes, specifically, factors regarding postprocedure weight regain, surgeon follow-up, and psychosocial issues related to quality of life (i.e. self-concept and obesity discrimination). The overarching research design for this study employed survey methods, using a cross-sectional, self-reported questionnaire …

Total Glucosinolate Preservation And Near Infrared Prediction In Rapeseed Meal, Jayd Marshal Kittelson
Food Safety
Glucosinolates (GLS) and their hydrolysis products are of great food and feed safety concern because they are responsible for both the beneficial and harmful properties of GLS-containing plants. Understanding GLS storage stability and total GLS concentration in Brassica oil meals is important to ensuring livestock health. The storage stability of GLS and potential of near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) for screening the total GLS content of various Brassica meals obtained globally and over multiple growing seasons was evaluated. Decreases were observed in meal stored at 4 oC. GLS storage stability within stored Brassica meals was possible for 18 months and possibly …
Fate Of Deoxynivalenol And Deoxynivalenol-3-Glucoside During The Malting Process, Wei Jiang
Fate Of Deoxynivalenol And Deoxynivalenol-3-Glucoside During The Malting Process, Wei Jiang
Food Safety
Deoxynivalenol (DON) is commonly found on small grains and causes food safety issues. Deoxynivalenol-3-Glucoside (DON-3-G) is a conjugate, formed as a defense response by the host plant. Past studies have shown both to be present in Fusarium infected small grains, and processed products like beer, but there is limited information on DON-3-G in malt. Objectives were to determine the levels of DON-3-G in barley and wheat, and to study its fate during malting of inoculated and commercial samples. Commercial barley and wheat samples were used to determine levels in naturally infected grain. During malting, barley DON declined 48% on average, …
Escherichia Coli In Bovine Calf Scours, Crystal Starr
Escherichia Coli In Bovine Calf Scours, Crystal Starr
Food Safety
Scours is caused by inflammation of the intestinal tract of ruminants leading to significant mortality and morbidity rates. It is predominately found in neonatal ruminants where the disease can occur 36 hours after birth. One of the most common infectious agents linked to scours is pathogenic Escherichia coli. Therefore, it is important to understand the virulence factors, diagnostic assays, age of the animals infected, and the co-factors associated with an E. coli scours outbreak. These factors are important in both scours disease pathogenesis and potential food safety-related postharvest pathogens. Using the most frequently identified virulence factors, a new scours diagnostic …

Creative Writing Pedagogy: The Autobiographical Narrative In Hybrid Projects As A Means To Explore Intersectionality, Tana G. Young
Masters Theses
My thesis addresses the role of creative writing methods in fostering close observation, attention to detail, critical thinking and a keener awareness of intersectionalities in writing classrooms across disciplines, but most especially the humanities and social sciences. I contend that the "real work" of the academy is critical thinking. Further, using creative writing, specifically autobiographical narrative in FYC, anticipates multimodal projects and digital storytelling, all of which fosters creative and critical thinking.
Emotional Intelligence As A Mediator In The Relationship Between Mindfulness And Subjective Well-Being, Christopher Griebel
Emotional Intelligence As A Mediator In The Relationship Between Mindfulness And Subjective Well-Being, Christopher Griebel
Masters Theses
Mindfulness can be defined as an awareness fostered by regulating one's attention in a particular manner over time, on purpose, in the present moment, and in a non-judgmental manner (Kabat-Zinn, 2012). In attempting to identify some of the mechanisms of action through which mindfulness positively impacts well-being, recent literature has suggested the possible role that emotional intelligence (EI) might play (Schutte & Malouff, 2011; Wang & Kong, 2014). The present study attempted to empirically verify the proposed mechanism of action. In addition, the study conceptualized mindfulness as a multidimensional construct by adopting the five-facet model of mindfulness (Baer, Smith, Hopkins, …
The Validity Of The Obsessive-Compulsive Syndromes As Emotional Disorders, Doty Jennings
The Validity Of The Obsessive-Compulsive Syndromes As Emotional Disorders, Doty Jennings
Masters Theses
Recent changes to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders have grouped together syndromes which are referred to as the obsessive-compulsive spectrum (OCS). The grouping of these syndromes is disputed because of lack of empirical verification for an organization purportedly based on research that supports similarity of observed symptoms. The taxonomy of emotional disorders was tested as an alternative model. Consistent with the model of the emotional disorders, this empirical research tested two proposed characteristics. The first was whether three OCS syndromes (hoarding syndrome, body dysmorphic syndrome, and obsessive compulsive syndromes) shared the broad factor of neuroticism or negative …

I started off by examining existing tools and methodologies to satisfy this purpose. As the result, the deliverable project is …
Daily Activity Patterns In Three Migratory Bird Species At A Stopover Site On The Northern Coast Of The Gulf Of Mexico, Lynn Schofield
Daily Activity Patterns In Three Migratory Bird Species At A Stopover Site On The Northern Coast Of The Gulf Of Mexico, Lynn Schofield
Masters Theses
CHAPTER I: A Comparison of Diel Movement Patterns in Three Bird Species at a Stopover Site on the Northern Coast of the Gulf of Mexico
During migration, birds require stopover habitats where they stop en route to rest, refuel, and prepare for the next stage of their migration. For songbirds, many short movements made within a stopover habitat are known to be costlier than a single long migratory flight, as it takes a considerable amount of energy to initiate flight. This indicates that migrating birds should strive to balance the energy expenditure made in movement during stopover and energy gains …
Asian Carp Population Status And Reproductive Potential In Illinois River Tributaries, Clinton Wesley Morgeson
Asian Carp Population Status And Reproductive Potential In Illinois River Tributaries, Clinton Wesley Morgeson
Masters Theses
Large floodplain rivers are among the most complex natural systems characterized by exchange between the river and its floodplain. Information regarding fishes in main channel habitats is abundant, however much less understanding extends into their tributaries. Tributaries of large rivers provide critical habitats for main channel fishes, important for foraging, spawning, and refuge. In addition to native diversity, large rivers are host to multiple exotic species invasions, threatening biodiversity, ecosystem function, and habitat quality. Two notorious invaders are Silver Carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) and Bighead Carp (H. nobilis), collectively Asian Carp, presenting an imminent threat of invasion …
Between Heaven And Hell And Heathens, Gabrielle Knock
Between Heaven And Hell And Heathens, Gabrielle Knock
Masters Theses
This work of fiction explores the relationship between worshipped and worshipper by dually depicting it as a child/parent relationship and as a relationship between lovers. Written in the tradition of parodies like Don Quixote and re-imaginings of myths like The Childhood of Jesus by J.M. Coetzee, I use humor and a contemporary setting in my book about a child who could be the second coming of Christ, but who cares more about his mother' s approval than he does about God.
"Fine Dignity, Picturesque Beauty, And Serious Purpose": The Reorientation Of Suffrage Media In The Twentieth Century, Emily Scarbrough
"Fine Dignity, Picturesque Beauty, And Serious Purpose": The Reorientation Of Suffrage Media In The Twentieth Century, Emily Scarbrough
Masters Theses
Throughout the first half century of the woman's suffrage movement, the women of the movement were depicted as dastardly, masculine women who usurped the family structure with their penchant for politics. In the twentieth century, a new generation of woman's suffragists took command of their appearance in the media. Instead of controversial figures, woman's suffragists were envisioned as normal, beautiful women and mothers. Through the use of mass media, woman suffragists restructured their campaign to convince the general public that society needed women to clean up politics. In doing so, suffragists sacrificed their goals of sexual equality in favor of …

Adaptive Significance Of Aberrant Chickadee Song In Illinois, Evan Andrew Glynn
Masters Theses
I studied the behavioral responses of Black-capped (Poecile atricapilus) and Carolina (P. carolinensis) chickadees to playback of Black-capped, Carolina, and aberrant chickadee songs throughout the state of Illinois. These two species are parapatrically distributed throughout the eastern United States, including Illinois. Some areas exist where the ranges of the two species overlap. Individuals in these contact zones often sing aberrant vocalizations. This study focused on the two parental vocalizations (i.e., Black-capped and Carolina song), and two of the most common aberrant vocalizations (the 'Greenville' and 'Vandalia' aberrant dialects), in an attempt to understand the adaptive significance of these aberrant songs. …

D-Galactose Decreases Mitoneet Levels In Liver Cancer Cells: Impact On Cellular Bioenergetics, Sudip Paudel
D-Galactose Decreases Mitoneet Levels In Liver Cancer Cells: Impact On Cellular Bioenergetics, Sudip Paudel
Masters Theses
Galactose is a simple sugar that at supraphysiological concentrations accelerates aging and age-related complications, which lead to impaired mitochondrial functions. MitoNEET is a small mitochondrial membrane protein with a molecular mass of 12.2 kDa that functions in diabetes, iron metabolism, regulation of oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) homeostasis. MitoNEET knockdown increases cellular respiration rates and ROS levels similar to galactose treatment. Pioglitazone, an antidiabetic drug, binds to mitoNEET and ameliorates galactose toxicity. Cellular mitoNEET levels, exposure of cells to galactose medium, and pioglitazone treatment directly influence cellular respiration. To elucidate the role of mitoNEET in galactose induced …

Researching The Historical Representations Of Andrew Jackson In Trade Books, Steven K. Sakowicz
Masters Theses
State and national standards compel teachers to introduce historical topics through multiple diverse texts, emphasizing the use of informational texts. Trade books allow teachers to meet these standards while also meeting the needs of diverse students. Primary sources serve as an additional curricular resource that fill the gaps in information covered by textbooks and trade books, allowing students to gain a more complete and accurate understanding of historical figures and events. Standards leave the selection and implementation of appropriate trade books, primary sources, and other curricular resources to the classroom teacher. In this research I qualify and quantify how Andrew …

The Effects Of Solutes In The Cryopreservation Of Adherent Neuroblastoma (Neuro-2a) Cells, Trisha L. Bailey
Masters Theses
A simple method to cryopreserve adherent monolayers of neuronal cells is currently not available, but the development of this technique could facilitate numerous applications in the field of biomedical engineering, cell line development, and drug screening. However, complex tissues of some exceptional animals survive freezing in nature. These animals are known to accumulate several small molecular weight solutes prior to freezing. Following a similar strategy, we investigated the effects of osmolytes such as trehalose, proline, and sucrose as additives to the traditional cryoprotectant dimethyl sulfoxide (Me2SO) in modulating the cryopreservation outcome of mouse neuroblastoma (Neuro-2a) cells. Neuro-2a cells adhered to …

Analytical Method Development For The Detection And Analysis Of Protein Carbonyls, Chelsea M. Coffey
Analytical Method Development For The Detection And Analysis Of Protein Carbonyls, Chelsea M. Coffey
Theses and Dissertations
Oxidative stress can result in changes to many biomolecules and also affect their activities. We are interested in protein carbonylation, a type of unnatural oxidation which has been associated with numerous degenerative disease states and is also a consequence of the natural aging process. Protein carbonyls are stable species, but countless analytical barriers exist in terms of their identification. Thus, the main goal of this work was to develop and optimize analytical methods that could be used to help us better understand which, where, and how proteins are being carbonylated.
Initial studies involved method validation for carbonylating, tagging, and enriching …
