© 2015 American Society for Nutrition. The realization that low-glycemic index diets were formulated using resistant starch led to more than a decade of research on the health effects of resistant starch. Determination of the metabolizable energy of the resistant starch product allowed for the performance of isocaloric studies. Fermentation of resistant starch in rodent studies results in what appears to be a healthier gut, demonstrated by increased amounts of short-chain fatty acids, an apparent positive change in the microbiota, and increased gene expression for gene products involved in normal healthy proliferation and apoptosis of potential cancer cells. Additionally, consumption …

© 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Prowashonupana barley (PWB) is high in β-glucan with moderate content of resistant starch. PWB reduced intestinal fat deposition (IFD) in wild type Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans, N2), and in sir-2.1 or daf-16 null mutants, and sustained a surrogate marker of lifespan, pharyngeal pumping rate (PPR), in N2, sir-2.1, daf-16, or daf-16/daf-2 mutants. Hyperglycaemia (2% glucose) reversed or reduced the PWB effect on IFD in N2 or daf-16/daf-2 mutants with a sustained PPR. mRNA expression of cpt-1, cpt-2, ckr-1, and gcy-8 were dose-dependently reduced in N2 or daf-16 mutants, elevated in daf-16/daf-2 mutants with reduction in cpt-1, …

Four populations of Calophya spp. (Hemiptera: Calophyidae) collected in Brazil were characterized using molecular and morphological methods. Examination of adults revealed the presence of 2 morphotypes, which were identified as C. latiforceps and C. terebinthifolii. However, morphological examination of 5th instar nymphs detected differences within C. latiforceps, with a population from Ubu, Espírito Santo, being distinct from the other 2 populations. Molecular characterization of the mitochondrial CO1 gene supported the presence of a new species of Calophya. .

© 2015 The Authors. Molecular Ecology Published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd. Cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) are known as the primary vector and reservoir of Rickettsia felis, the causative agent of flea-borne spotted fever; however, field surveys regularly report molecular detection of this infectious agent from other blood-feeding arthropods. The presence of R. felis in additional arthropods may be the result of chance consumption of an infectious bloodmeal, but isolation of viable rickettsiae circulating in the blood of suspected vertebrate reservoirs has not been demonstrated. Successful transmission of pathogens between actively blood-feeding arthropods in the absence of a disseminated …

© 2015 Hird, Sánchez, Carstens and Brumfield. The gut microbiota of vertebrates are essential to host health. Most non-model vertebrates, however, lack even a basic description of natural gut microbiota biodiversity. Here, we sampled 116 intestines from 59 Neotropical bird species and used the V6 region of the 16S rRNA molecule as a microbial fingerprint (average coverage per bird ~80,000 reads). A core microbiota of Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, and Actinobacteria was identified, as well as several gut-associated genera. We tested 18 categorical variables associated with each bird for significant correlation to the gut microbiota; host taxonomic categories were most frequently …

© 2015 Harvey et al. Comparing inferences among datasets generated using short read sequencing may provide insight into the concerted impacts of divergence, gene flow and selection across organisms, but comparisons are complicated by biases introduced during dataset assembly. Sequence similarity thresholds allow the de novo assembly of short reads into clusters of alleles representing different loci, but the resulting datasets are sensitive to both the similarity threshold used and to the variation naturally present in the organism under study. Thresholds that require high sequence similarity among reads for assembly (stringent thresholds) as well as highly variable species may result …

The Growing Crisis In Maine: Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, Olivia Avidan
Honors Theses
Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) is a Maine epidemic. In addition to having medical repercussions, NAS is intrinsically linked to social, political and economic factors. NAS is a conglomeration of symptoms, short-term and long-term, that affect a child that has been exposed to opioids in utero. These factors that impact NAS are interdependent. The past decade is characterized by a dramatic rise in NAS cases in Maine. This paper explores the social, political and economic landscape surrounding NAS in an effort to describe fully the syndrome’s effect on both individuals and the community as a whole.

Justice And Law Journals, Gabriel "Jack" Chin, Adam B. Wolf
Justice And Law Journals, Gabriel "Jack" Chin, Adam B. Wolf
Michigan Journal of Race and Law
What is the role for a law journal in advancing justice? What is the role of a justice-minded practitioner in furthering legal scholarship? And what is the intersection—practically and normatively—for law journals, legal scholars, practitioners, and justice? This brief Article attempts to lay a foundation for answering these important, but oft-neglected, questions. In the following conversation, a frequent contributor to the Michigan Journal of Race & Law (MJRL) and a former Editor-in-Chief of the Journal posit some ideas on how legal scholarship engages with justice, and how race-conscious practitioners can interact with race-conscious legal scholars.

Remediating Overselective Stimulus Control By Systematically Thinning A Differential Observing Response, Rachel S. Farber
Doctoral Dissertations - College of Arts and Sciences
"Differential observing responses (DOR) have been an effective intervention to remediate overselective stimulus control with individuals with intellectual disabilities. Experiment 1 examined the effects of a non-verbal DOR requirement on a 2-sample delayed matching-to- sample (DMTS) task. Twelve individuals diagnosed with intellectual disabilities completed the study. Initially, the accuracy of all 12 participants was in the overselective range (between 50- 83%) on the 2-sample DMTS task. The introduction of the DOR requirement in the form of a compound simultaneous matching-to-sample (SMTS) task increased accuracy to high levels for 6 participants."

The purpose of this quasi experimental study was to examine the effectiveness of mobile (SMS) learning on Iranian EFL learners‟ English vocabulary learning. In addition, this study compared two approaches of vocabulary learning, namely, SMS learning and paper text learning in an Iranian school in Kuala Lumpur. The media richness theory (Daft & Lengel, 1986), Bloom‟s Taxonomy theory (Anderson, 2001) and Motivation theory (Keller,1987) were chosen as the theoretical foundation for this study. Furthermore, this study investigated whether there was any significant difference between the control and experimental groups of participants regarding their learning and satisfaction scores. Finally, the study …

Ant-Based Vehicle Congestion Avoidance Framework Using Vehicular Networks / Mohammad Reza Jabbarpour Sattari, Mohammad Reza Jabbarpour Sattari
Student Works (2010-2019)
Over the last decade, vehicle population has dramatically increased all over the world. This large number of vehicles coupled with the limited capacity of the roads and highways lead to heavy traffic congestion. Besides, it gives rise to air pollution, driver frustration, and costs billions of dollars annually in fuel consumption. Although finding a proper solution for vehicle congestion is a necessity, it is still remaining a challenging task due to the dynamic and unpredictable nature of vehicular environments. Building new high-capacity streets can be a solution but it is very costly, time consuming and in most cases, infeasible due …

A Transitivity Analysis Of The Mandarin Ba Construction / Wang Jiaqi, Jiaqi Wang
Student Works (2010-2019)
Mandarin BA construction is quite a controversial but frequently-used unique sentence pattern with the most salient characteristic of sentence order. Since it is different from the most frequently-shown sentence order of subject-verb-object (SVO) in Chinese, BA construction tends to follow the pattern of “NP1+BA+NP2+V/VP”. It has been implied that the character of BA plays the role in enabling the post-verbal NP2 to occupy the pre-verbal position. Due to its structural peculiarity, the BA construction has received a considerable attention of grammarians. There have been many voices (L. Wang, 1945; Li and Thompson ,1981; H. Wang, 1984; Tsao, 1987; Li, 1990; …
