Potter Priest, Tianhe Han
Potter Priest, Tianhe Han
Theses
"Potter Priest” is an animated graduate thesis film. The entire animation including credits was 8 minutes long by the time of my thesis screening at SOFA, RIT. The story was developed to show the sublimation of the spirit of an old blind potter by realizing worship the god is more about caring the livings rather than praying to the statue. The story takes place in an ancient Pottery Kiln used by the old man as a shrine. A weasel comes in and interrupts the rite. While teasing the old man the weasel disrupts the balance of strings and get trapped …

Feeding A Brown Midrib Corn Silage-Based Diet To Growing Beef Steers Improves Growth Performance And Economic Returns, C. S. Saunders, S. Y. Yang, J.-S. Eun, D. M. Feuz, D. R. Zobell
Animal, Dairy, and Veterinary Science Faculty Publications
A feedlot experiment was performed to determine growth performance, ruminal fermentation characteristics, and economic returns for growing beef steers when fed a brown midrib corn silage-based total mixed ration (BMRT) compared with a conventional corn silage-based total mixed ration (CCST). Twenty-four Angus crossbred steers (initial body weight=258±23.2 kg) in individual pens were used in a completely randomized design (n=12). Intake of dry matter was not different between the treatments. Steers fed the BMRT tended to have greater average daily gain (1.54 vs. 1.42 kg d−1; P=0.09) and gain-to-feed ratio (0.165 vs. 0.146; P=0.07) compared with those fed the CCST. Feeding …
From Incentive To Commodity To Asset: How International Law Is Reconceptualizing Intellectual Property, Rochelle Dreyfuss, Susy Frankel
From Incentive To Commodity To Asset: How International Law Is Reconceptualizing Intellectual Property, Rochelle Dreyfuss, Susy Frankel
Michigan Journal of International Law
The intellectual property landscape is changing. As Jerry Reichman once observed, intellectual property rights were islands in a sea of the public domain until domestic laws expanded to include such “innovations” as business methods, software, scents, and sounds and turned the public domain into a pond surrounded by a continent of rights. Reichman spoke towards the end of the 20th century, and whatever problems accompanied this change, in truth (to paraphrase Voltaire’s view of the Holy Roman Empire), the concept of “intellectual property rights” was predominantly about neither “property” nor “rights” (nor was it always “intellectual”). Rather, copyright, patent, and …
Pedagogy, Social Transformation, And Space: Toward A Revolutionary Critical Pedagogy For Space, Derek R. Ford
Pedagogy, Social Transformation, And Space: Toward A Revolutionary Critical Pedagogy For Space, Derek R. Ford
Dissertations - ALL
Building on the work of Peter McLaren, Henri Lefebvre, and David Harvey, this dissertation develops a revolutionary critical pedagogy for space. I begin with a historical and theoretical survey of the roots critical pedagogy, a pedagogical orientation that is often called upon but rarely situated deeply. I then break down revolutionary critical pedagogy into seven components. I elaborate the dominant trends in the current social-political moment. I introduce two terms here, neoliberalism and the global class war. I argue that the former is a necessary but ultimately insufficient framework for understanding the present moment, and that the latter provides a …
Water, Water, Everywhere: Surface Water Liability, Jill M. Fraley
Water, Water, Everywhere: Surface Water Liability, Jill M. Fraley
Michigan Journal of Environmental & Administrative Law
By 2030 the U.S. will lose around $520 billion annually from its gross domestic product due to flooding. New risks resulting from climate change arise not only from swelling rivers and lakes, but also from stormwater runoff. According to the World Bank, coastal cities risk flooding more from their poor management of surface water than they do from rising sea levels. Surface water liability governs when a landowner is responsible for diverting the flow of water to a neighboring parcel of land. Steep increases in urban flooding will make surface water an enormous source of litigation in the coming decades. …
Minimization Criteria For Off-Road Vehicle Use, Louisa S. Eberle
Minimization Criteria For Off-Road Vehicle Use, Louisa S. Eberle
Michigan Journal of Environmental & Administrative Law
President Nixon recognized the controversy surrounding off-road vehicle (ORV) use on public lands when he signed Executive Order 11,644 in 1972. The Executive Order set out minimization criteria that bound federal land management agencies’ ORV area and trail designations. Forty years later, agencies are still struggling to implement the minimization criteria. Recent court opinions have struck down implementation attempts by the National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, and Forest Service. This note argues that agencies require additional guidance for ORV management, particularly in light of case law that sets a floor for achieving minimization. After examining how the mandate …

Paternally Expressed Gene 3 (Peg3) is an imprinted gene that controls milk letdown and maternal-caring behaviors. In this study, a conditional knockout allele has been developed in Mus musculus to further characterize these known functions of Peg3 in a tissue-specific manner. The mutant line was first crossed with a germline Cre. The progeny of this cross displayed growth retardation phenotypes. This is consistent with …

Knowing how climate change affects the population dynamics of insect pests is critical for the future of integrated pest management. Rising winter temperatures from global warming can drive increases in outbreaks of some agricultural pests. In contrast, here we propose an alternative hypothesis that both extremely cold and warm winters can mismatch the timing between the eclosion of overwintering pests and the flowering of key host plants. As host plants normally need higher effective cumulative temperatures for flowering than insects need for eclosion, changes in flowering time will be less dramatic than changes in eclosion time, leading to a mismatch …

Spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsial species are obligate intracellular tick-borne pathogens that are responsible for important human diseases. Previous reports have demonstrated the feasibility of using recombinant surface cell antigen Sca5/OmpB to elicit protective immunity against homologous challenges using murine models of Mediterranean spotted fever and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. In addition, the feasibility of generating cross-protective immunity against related rickettsial species has also been established, but the molecular basis for these phenomena was not explored. Here, we demonstrate that vaccination of C3H/HeN mice with a recombinant OmpB domain derived from Rickettsia conorii induced high titer humoral immune responses that …

Island Vs. Countryside Biogeography: An Examination Of How Amazonian Birds Respond To Forest Clearing And Fragmentation, Jared D. Wolfe, Philip C. Stouffer, Karl Mokross, Luke L. Powell, Marina M. Anciaes

Avian diversity in fragmented Amazonian landscapes depends on a balance between extinction and colonization in cleared and disturbed areas. Regenerating forest facilitates bird dispersal within degraded Amazonian landscapes and may tip the balance in favor of persistence in habitat patches. Determining the response of Amazonian birds to fragmentation may be hindered because many species use adjacent second growth matrices thereby limiting the applicability of island biogeography to predict species loss; alternatively, a countryside biogeographic framework to evaluate the value of regenerating forest may be more appropriate. Here, we used point-count and capture data to compare Amazonian bird communities among continuous …

Expression Of Insulin Responsive Genes In Insulin Resistant Conditions, And The Effect Of Selenium On Gene Expression, David L. Ruff
Expression Of Insulin Responsive Genes In Insulin Resistant Conditions, And The Effect Of Selenium On Gene Expression, David L. Ruff
Masters Theses
Chronically high blood glucose levels lead to many problems, such as insulin resistance, the hallmark of Type II diabetes. Increased flux through the hexosamine biosynthesis pathway is one mechanism by which high glucose as well as glucosamine has been shown to induce insulin resistance. This study tests the effects of glucosamine induced insulin resistance on insulin regulation of the metabolic genes glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) and fatty acid synthase (FAS) as well as insulin responsive proteins tribbles homolog (TRIB3) and sterol regulatory element binding protein (SERBP-1c) 1c.
Selenium, a micronutrient has been shown to be an effective insulin mimetic in Type …
Of Minds, Morals, And Methods: Combining Moral Meteorology And Disaster Relief In Historiography Of China’S Disaster Management, Wee-Kiat Lim
CCX Research
In this working paper, I argue that disaster management in high Qing period can be better understood by simultaneously considering the historiographies of how governing elites understood disasters at the metaphysical level and the administration of disaster relief. During High Qing late imperial China, the regime encountered rapid changes in population, economy, and environment. Following how environmental historian Mark Elvin describes the prevalent ideology that guided Chinese governing elites on implicating human conduct with the manifestation of disasters as “moral meteorology”, I link it to the granary system so as to underscore how these two related but separate streams of …

The positive identification of a decedent is paramount to a forensic investigation in which human remains have been recovered and must be identified. Due to increasing global mobility in the world's populations, it is not inconceivable that an individual might die far away from his or her home. Pinpointing an individual's geographic origin may contribute to definitive forensic identification of contemporary human skeletal remains in cases where dental records and other means of identification are either unavailable to law enforcement personnel or do not yield immediate results. Stable isotope analysis of biogenic tissues such as tooth enamel and bone mineral …

Control Of Alternaria Solani Resistance To Boscalid, Fluopyram, And Chlorothalonil, Andrew K. Hollingshead
Control Of Alternaria Solani Resistance To Boscalid, Fluopyram, And Chlorothalonil, Andrew K. Hollingshead
Theses and Dissertations
Alternaria solani, cause of early blight, threatens potato yields. Fungicide resistance has made control of early blight difficult and there are concerns that in-season fungicide use results in resistance to boscalid, fluopyram, and chlorothalonil. Concern of high levels of resistance to boscalid a group 7 fungicide may confer cross-resistance to fungicides of the same group such as fluopyram. From 2014 to 2015, A. solani isolates were collected from field plots treated with boscalid, fluopyram, and chlorothalonil to test resistance levels. Isolates were determined resistant if EC50 values were higher than 5 µg ml-1. Boscalid and chlorothalonil mean EC50 values decreased …
The Role Of Stress In Hypersexual Behavior, Randy Gilliland
The Role Of Stress In Hypersexual Behavior, Randy Gilliland
Theses and Dissertations
The proposed diagnostic criteria for Hypersexual Disorder included "[r]epetitively engaging in sexual fantasies, urges, or behaviors in response to stressful life events" (Kafka, 2010, p.279) as a symptom, although no data demonstrates a causal relationship between stress and hypersexual behavior. We sought to confirm previous findings while furthering the field's understanding of this relationship by being the first study to assess stress and hypersexual behavior across multiple time points. Specifically, we sought to test three hypotheses within a sample of men seeking treatment for hypersexual behavior: 1) hypersexual individuals report higher stress levels than published norm samples; 2) stress predicts …

Neal Ambrose-Smith: The Artistic Modernity Of Indianness, Erik Parker
Art & Art History ETDs
Neal Ambrose-Smith is an artist of Cree, Metis, and Salish heritage who is at the forefront of contemporary Native American art. A thorough examination of Ambrose-Smiths body of work will reveal that the majority of his art can be viewed as having overwhelming intentions toward a dissolution of boundaries separating the ideas of 'Native,' 'contemporary,' and 'Western art.' It also will show that through the utilization of popular culture and its icons, Ambrose-Smith is able to build a rapport with audiences, while also using images and themes in his art to help break down barriers that contemporary Native artists face …
Disruptive Technology And Securities Regulation, Chris Brummer
Disruptive Technology And Securities Regulation, Chris Brummer
Fordham Law Review
Nowhere has disruptive technology had a more profound impact than in financial services—and yet nowhere do academics and policymakers lack a coherent theory of the phenomenon more, much less a coherent set of regulatory prescriptions. Part of the challenge lies in the varied channels through which innovation upends market practices. Problems also lurk in the popular assumption that securities regulation operates against the backdrop of stable market gatekeepers like exchanges, broker-dealers, and clearing systems—a fact scenario increasingly out of sync in twenty-first-century capital markets.
This Article explains how technological innovation “disrupts” not only capital markets but also the exercise of …

Short-Term Effects Of A Western Diet On The Number Of Brainderived Neurotrophic Factor Immunoreactive Neurons In The Hypothalamic Arcuate, Ventromedial And Paraventricular Nuclei, Kaitlyn Elizabeth Gilland
Open Access Theses
Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is an important anorexogenic factor and has been shown to be involved in obesity. It is important to know when changes in BDNF expression occur to possibly prevent development of dietary obesity. BDNF mRNA decreases in response to long-term western diet (WD) exposure in the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH), yet no study has investigated the short-term effects of WD on BDNF expression in the hypothalamus. It was hypothesized BDNF protein would mirror a decrease in BDNF mRNA in the VMH when mice were fasted for 48-hours or fed WD for 6-hours, 48-hours, 1-week and 3-week and decrease …
Intrathecal Pain Pumps For The Treatment Of Neuropathic Pain: A Retrospective Review Of The Electronic Medical Record, Kathleen Lopez Reyes
Intrathecal Pain Pumps For The Treatment Of Neuropathic Pain: A Retrospective Review Of The Electronic Medical Record, Kathleen Lopez Reyes
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Most patients suffering from neuropathic pain will not obtain sufficient pain relief from current recommended therapy. The present study sought to compare patients with neuropathic pain treated with intrathecal drug delivery systems (IDDS) to those with oral opioid treatment alone via a retrospective analysis of electronic medical records. Pain scores and number and amount of adverse events were the primary endpoints of analysis. The most important finding of our study was that significantly fewer adverse events were found among patients treated with IDDS compared to patients treated with traditional oral medications. We examined the differences in recorded pain scores over …

Developing A System To Arrest Transformation Using A Zebrafish Model For Melanomagenesis, Cory Haluska
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
The recent emergence of RNA-guided CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing system adapted from the natural defense mechanism found in bacteria and archaea has made the manipulation of genetic loci more feasible than ever. Using this technique we attempted to eliminate a target sequence of about 20 nucleotides from the promoter of the protein ICER (Inducible cAMP Early Repressor) located just upstream of the start sequence. ICER is a small transcription factor and supposed tumor suppressor protein that comes from the CREM (cAMP Responsive Element) gene. ICER has been found to be absent in tumor cells, marked for degradation by the ubiquitin-proteasomal pathway. …

Analysis Of Water Quality In New Jersey, Kaitlyn Scrudato
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Numerous diseases can occur when swimming or fishing in contaminated water. It is important that the quality of water is being monitored prior to recreational activities. To model the quality of the water at any given time with available predictors, data from bodies of water across New Jersey from 1999 to 2013 was collected from the database STORET. The water quality parameters studied were Escherichia coli (E. coli) and enterococcus with the predictors as Dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, Salinity, Temperature, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) and Total Suspended Solids (TSS). The data was broken down by habitat type. The habitat types …
