Fact Book 2014, Uno Office Of Institutional Effectiveness

Fact Book

The Fact Book presents important campus information in data tables and charts. Included are details regarding students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Generally, data are broken out by college, rank, level, gender, age and ethnicity for both spring and fall semesters, past to present. There are a few academic year tables that include information on tuition & fees, student credit hours by program, and degrees conferred. We wish to thank the many individuals and departments at the University for their contributions to the Fact Book.

Aspccgtk: Towards Syntactic Parsing With Semantic Disambiguation, Yuliya Lierler, Peter Schueller

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Natural language expressions are often ambiguous, allowing multiple interpretations. In this note we describe an approach that integrates syntactic analysis with semantic constraints in a system called ASPCCGTK. This system is based on Answer Set Programming — a popular declarative constraint programming paradigm.

Nebraska Legislative Planning Committee 2014 Report: Policy Briefs, Center For Public Affairs Research (Cpar)

Past Publications

The Nebraska Legislature's Planning Committee was created in 2009 with the passage of LB 653 in order to help establish a process of long-term state planning with the Nebraska Legislature. The committee was created to assist state government in identifying emerging trends, assets and challenges of the state and the long-term implications of the decisions made by the Nebraska Legislature.

Efforts during the first two years of the committee focused on the development of a database. The goals and benchmarks included in the database were developed and approved by the Legislature's Planning Committee to present a common-sense and data-driven assessment …

Mhttu Implementation Final Project Report, Angelica Ramirez, Julian Samayoa, Matt Keeble Dec 2014

Mhttu Implementation Final Project Report, Angelica Ramirez, Julian Samayoa, Matt Keeble

Mechanical Engineering

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has invested considerable effort in developing fireproof high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters. Due to the nature of LLNL’s research, the air leaving its lab facilities must be filtered before it is released into the atmosphere; thus, each laboratory is equipped with large banks of HEPA filters through which all internal air is exhausted. Over the years, however, fires have erupted in the labs and entire banks of HEPA filters have been destroyed, resulting in repairs and crucial downtime that prove costly.

Engineers and scientists alike have been seeking a permanent solution to this problem, and one …

Machine Shop Learning Kits, Samantha Kelley, Ellen Chambers

Mechanical Engineering

Currently in the Cal Poly Machine shops, students are struggling to find ways to fulfill the 10 hours of shop experience required to gain their Yellow Tag certification. Red Tag is the first level of certification students generally achieve their freshman year. It allows them to use basic machine tools such as drills, shears, benders, etc. Then after completing 10 hours of shop experience they can take the Yellow Tag test, which gains them access to use a welder, mill, and lathe. The heads of the machine shop, the shop technicians, and the mechanical engineering students will all have different …

Wingtip Dynamics Simulator, Eugene Fox, Nick Rodriguez, Steven Rieber

Mechanical Engineering

Raytheon is a defense contracting company with an electronic warfare division that is developing a radio frequency signal triangulation system. Part of the focus in improving this technology is the need for accurate and real time locational knowledge of the signal receivers, which are located at the tips of aircraft wings. Due to turbulence during flight, the fluttering motion of the wings alter the distance and angle relationships of the two receivers and add noise to the received signal data, which negatively affect the triangulation estimates. To mitigate this error caused by the wing flutter, Raytheon is developing a software …

Wildlife Deterrence Method Test Device, Garrett Tietz, Adam Webb, Dane Knutson Dec 2014

Wildlife Deterrence Method Test Device, Garrett Tietz, Adam Webb, Dane Knutson

Mechanical Engineering

The objective of the Deer Busters team is to design and build a device or system of devices that will be used to determine which method, or methods, are most effective at deer deterrence. JumpSport suspects that a method which gives the appearance of approach to the deer in an aggressive or startling manner but also changes the way it attacks so that the deer do not get used to the device will be most effective. Deer Busters is committed to the completion of the deer deterrent testing device by the end of the fall quarter of 2014.

Environmental Protection And U.S. Foreign Policy & Decision-Making In Multilateral Development Banks, Maui Cheska L. Orozco Dec 2014

Environmental Protection And U.S. Foreign Policy & Decision-Making In Multilateral Development Banks, Maui Cheska L. Orozco

Honors College Theses

In recent decades, the promotion of policies that are environmentally friendly has become an important goal in U.S. foreign policy. One way that the United States has influence over protecting the environment is through the policies attached to projects funded by the multilateral development banks (MDBs). This gives the U.S. the ability to indirectly fund projects in developing countries. Using data provided by the United States Treasury, I examined U.S. voting decisions on projects from 2004 to 2011. These votes come from multiple development banks including the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB), Asian Development Bank (ADB), African Development …

The Influences Of Brand-Consumer And Cause-Congruence On Consumer Responses To Cause Related Marketing, Ronald E. Goldsmith, Zhu Yimin Dec 2014

The Influences Of Brand-Consumer And Cause-Congruence On Consumer Responses To Cause Related Marketing, Ronald E. Goldsmith, Zhu Yimin

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

Cause Related Marketing (CRM) is a widely used type of brand alliance in which companies donate a portion of their sales to social causes with whom they ally. Researchers have studied many aspects of CRM to learn why these programs are effective and how to enhance their success. An overlooked component in CRM research is the extent to which consumers identify with the brand and with the cause. The present study presented 604 U.S. college students with CRM campaigns for two brands (M&Ms and Crest) partnered with the World Wildlife Fund to assess whether brand-cause congruence, brand-consumer congruence, cause-consumer congruence, …

Enhancing The Impact Of Quality Points In Interteaching, James Soldner, Rocio Rosales, William Crimando

School for Global Inclusion and Social Development Faculty Publications

Interteaching is a classroom instruction approach based on behavioralprinciples that offers increased flexibility to instructors. There are severalcomponents of interteaching that may contribute to its demonstrated efficacy. In aprior analysis of one of these components, the quality points contingency, nosignificant difference was reported in student exam scores when quality pointswere made available. The purpose of the present study was to further evaluate theimpact of the quality points component of interteaching, and to enhance theimmediacy of feedback provided to students on this contingency via delivery of ananswer key upon submission of post-discussion quizzes with the opportunity toreview the answer key with …

An Examination Of Fuel And Transportation Infrastructure Subsidies And Their Impacts On Single Use Occupancy Vehicles, Anderson P. Stoute Dec 2014

An Examination Of Fuel And Transportation Infrastructure Subsidies And Their Impacts On Single Use Occupancy Vehicles, Anderson P. Stoute

Theses (Pre-2016)

The abundance of the United States' freeway systems has led to the rise in single occupant vehicles thus creating major problems. Freeways promote sprawl developments, increase pollution and contribute a level of pride among society that estimates one class of citizen's superior to another. Yet, government's policies including the continued subsidization of fuel and transportation infrastructure supports the lifestyle of citizens that contributes to negative outcomes. Billions of dollars every year ensures that citizens continue to enjoy the auto dependency to which they have long since grown accustomed. If this policy direction continues, pollution mitigation measures and congestion elimination goals …
