Evaluation Of Natural Steelhead Recruitment In The Muskegon River, Michigan, Nicholas C. Albrecht Dec 2014

Evaluation Of Natural Steelhead Recruitment In The Muskegon River, Michigan, Nicholas C. Albrecht

Masters Theses

The lower Muskegon River is one of the most heavily fished rivers in the state of Michigan and is a valuable component of the multi-billion dollar sport fishery in the Great Lakes. Although significant stocking effort has been invested to maintain and improve the steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fishery in the Muskegon River, natural recruitment has been severely limited due to high summer water temperatures. The goal of this research project was to evaluate the success of a diffuser system installed in 2008 at Croton Dam to moderate high summer water temperatures in the lower Muskegon River. I estimated natural juvenile …

Young Leaders Of Character Program: A Model Of Character Education Program For Improving Life Effectiveness Skills And Civic Responsibility Of Adolescents, Bengü Ergüner-Tekinalp, Kris Crabtree-Groff

Journal of Youth Development

Studies that examine character development programs are scarce. This study examines the effect of a week-long character education program in a range of life skills and civic efficacy. Thirty adolescents participated in the training. A no-control, quasi-experimental design incorporated baseline measures and a six-month follow-up. A Life Effectiveness Questionnaire and Civic Efficacy Survey were administered and open-ended questions further explored how participants incorporated program outcomes into their daily lives. The t-test comparison of baseline and pretest measures yielded no significant differences, but t-test comparison of pre-post- test analysis elicited statistically significant positive results. Findings indicate the program can provide a …

Evidence Of Self-Directed Learning On A High School Robotics Team, Nathan R. Dolenc, Claire Mitchell, Robert H. Tai

Journal of Youth Development

Self-directed learning is described as an individual taking the initiative to engage in a learning experience while assuming responsibility to follow through to its conclusion. Robotics competitions are examples of informal environments that can facilitate self-directed learning. This study examined how mentor involvement, student behavior, and physical workspace contributed to self-directed learning on one robotics competition team. How did mentors transfer responsibility to students? How did students respond to managing a team? Are the physical attributes of a workspace important? The mentor, student, and workplace factors captured in the research showed mentors wanting students to do the work, students assuming …

Coming Up Short: The United States' Second-Best Strategies For Corralling Purely Speculative Derivatives, Timothy E. Lynch Dec 2014

Coming Up Short: The United States' Second-Best Strategies For Corralling Purely Speculative Derivatives, Timothy E. Lynch

Faculty Works

Purely speculative derivatives (PSDs) are derivatives in which neither counterparty is engaged in hedging. Unless used for entertainment purposes, PSDs are irrational, less-than-zero-sum transactions. Entities that engage in PSDs jeopardize their stakeholders and increase systemic risk. PSDs can also increase moral hazard, be used for regulatory arbitrage, and redirect resources away from efficient allocation of market capital. PSDs should be unenforceable, void for public policy reasons, except where expressly permitted to provide gambling entertainment, enhance price discovery, or increase liquidity for hedgers. In the U.S., however, PSDs are often legal and enforceable, even after the financial crisis of 2008 that …

Companies' Responses To Negative Online Reviews, Claudia L. Ramos Dec 2014

Companies' Responses To Negative Online Reviews, Claudia L. Ramos

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Past research has revealed that very little research had examined services recovery strategies in the online context. The study investigated different types of companies’ responses to negative online reviews as a service recovery strategy after a service failure. The current research centers on the relationship between one service recovery strategy and three online customer behavioral reactions: post-purchase cognitive dissonance, post-recovery satisfaction and re-purchase intentions. Participants were randomly assigned to one of five conditions and were asked to complete a questionnaire that measured cognitive dissonance, post-recovery satisfaction and re-purchase intention scores, as well as demographic items. Results showed that the apology …

Pursuing Coherence Among Proportionality, Linearity, And Similarity: Two Pathways From Preservice Teachers’ Geometric Representations, Hyung Sook Lee, Jaehoon Yim

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The importance of using multiple representations of a mathematical concept and connecting the representations has been discussed in learning and teaching mathematics. The Common Core State Standards further the discussion with an emphasis on focus and coherence in teaching mathematical concepts across grades. Preservice teachers in our problem solving class were asked to use geometric representations to solve a problem that required proportional reasoning. They were also asked to sequence the works of their peers as well as their own from a developmental perspective. Sequencing geometric representations with various levels was challenging because it required showing a coherent understanding of …

An Exploration Of The Role Of The Learner In The English As A Second Language Classroom. A Case Study Of A Rural Public Primary School In Vihiga County, Kenya, John Auna Esikumo

Master of Education

Active participation of the learner in the English language class is the foundation upon which the learning of the language takes place. This is because learners‟ scholastic accomplishment may be greatly affected by their active engagement in class as they interact among themselves, with teachers and with instructional resources. Children learn best when they participate enthusiastically in the classroom so as to communicate more effectively and enhance critical thinking. Therefore, teachers should promote strategies that reinforce learning capacities to be more interactive to inculcate skills for life-long learning. This study sought to explore the role of the learner in the …

Exploration Of Teacher Resource Center Support Towards Professional Growth Of Primary School Teachers In The Teaching Of Mathematics: A Case Of A Trc In Southern Tanzania., Chrysostom Bonus Matenga

Master of Education

A number of primary school teachers have academic and professional shortcomings which can be traced to their education background before they got into the teaching profession. However, to replace these qualitatively weak teachers with the quality ones is not possible as they are many in numbers and also due to contractual obligations. The only viable existing solution therefore is to up-grade teachers by means of in-service teacher professional development programmes. This study therefore, explored TRC support towards professional growth of primary school teachers in the teaching of mathematics. The study applied a qualitative research approach and a single case study …

Chemistry Teachers’ Perceptions Of Team Teaching In Enhancing Their Pedagogical Content Knowledge: A Case Study Of A Secondary School In Embu County, Kenya., Margaret Karimi Njiru

Master of Education

Team teaching is one of the rich avenues through which chemistry teachers‟ pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) can be enhanced. However studies have shown that perceptions richly impact on the choices that chemistry teachers make concerning a particular pedagogical strategy like team teaching. Though in team teaching teachers are engaged in the three components of co-planning, co-instruction and co-assessment for a group of learners, chemistry teachers are rarely involved in these components and especially co-instruction. Understanding the chemistry teachers‟ perceptions of team teaching and how these perceptions inform their practise was therefore the aim of this study since through team teaching …

Using Oral Traditions (Stories) In Teaching Numeracy In Early Childhood In Lower Primary P1-3, West Nile Sub-Region Uganda, Owiny Anthony Anywar

Master of Education

In traditional Africa, story was one of the teaching approaches used to impart most of multifaceted undocumented indigenous knowledge. Today in schools the world over stories are used to teach children in early childhood and the use extends beyond the school boundary because early childhood educators and parents have ascertained the contributions of stories in young children’s learning. Uses of stories in teaching make children learn and understand the entire world around them and they develop wisdom and skills through creativity to overcome challenges they face. Most teachers relate the use of stories in teaching language and other subjects while …

Culture In Solution-Focused Consultation: An Intercultural Approach*, Gale Miller Dec 2014

Culture In Solution-Focused Consultation: An Intercultural Approach*, Gale Miller

Journal of Solution Focused Practices

I develop an intercultural approach to Solution-Focused consultation in this pa per. The approach represents an anthropological-sociological interpretation and is written by an interested outsider to the Solution-Focused world. The analysis stresses how multicultural concerns permeate Solution-Focused consultations as practitioners and clients draw from other cultures in which they participate. Practitioner-client interactions are treated as negotiations that turn on participants' intercultural competencies, that is, their ability to navigate between their own cultural orientations and those of others involved in consultations. An explanation of how my intercultural perspective extends cultural themes in the Solution-Focused literature is discussed and an illustration of …

Asynchronous Amazon Forest Canopy Phenology Indicates Adaptation To Both Water And Light Availability, Matthew O. Jones, John S. Kimball, Ramakrishna R. Nemani Dec 2014

Asynchronous Amazon Forest Canopy Phenology Indicates Adaptation To Both Water And Light Availability, Matthew O. Jones, John S. Kimball, Ramakrishna R. Nemani

Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group Publications

Amazon forests represent nearly half of all tropical vegetation biomass and, through photosynthesis and respiration, annually process more than twice the amount of estimated carbon (CO2) from fossil fuel emissions. Yet the seasonality of Amazon canopy cover, and the extent to which seasonal fluctuations in water availability and photosynthetically available radiation influence these processes, is still poorly understood. Implementing six remotely sensed data sets spanning nine years (2003–2011), with reported field and flux tower data, we show that southern equatorial Amazon forests exhibit a distinctive seasonal signal. Seasonal timing of water availability, canopy biomass growth and net leaf …

Encryption And Incrimination: The Evolving States Of Encrypted Drives, Shannon M. Oltmann

Information Science Faculty Publications

Individuals use encryption to safeguard many valid and legal applications but also to hide illegal activity. Several legal cases have drawn the limits of self-incrimination under the Fifth Amendment regarding providing passwords to access illegal information content, such as child pornography. The cases illustrate that certain knowledge of evidence amounts to a compelling need for access and that a subpoena for hard drive contents is more likely to succeed than requiring a witness to provide a password. Since known documents are not legally protected and biometric data can be compelled as evidence, there is no reason that known digital documents, biometric …

Reflections On The Korean Jury Trial, Valerie P. Hans Dec 2014

Reflections On The Korean Jury Trial, Valerie P. Hans

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Korea's experience with its new jury system offers many lessons for those interested in juries and jury reform worldwide. Aiming for a unique jury system that was ideally suited to Korean citizens and their legal system, those who crafted Korea's jury incorporated elements of both classic jury systems and mixed tribunals. Initially, the jury deliberates on guilt independently of the judge, but the procedure includes optional as well as mandatory opportunities for the presiding judge to advise the jury during its deliberation. The Korean jury delivers an advisory rather than binding jury verdict. These and other features of the Korean …
