Generation And Use Of Monoclonal Antibodies To Ldentify Subpopulations Of Post Thaw Stallion Sperm, Sarah Abdulaziz Almuhanna Dec 2014

Generation And Use Of Monoclonal Antibodies To Ldentify Subpopulations Of Post Thaw Stallion Sperm, Sarah Abdulaziz Almuhanna

Masters Theses

Artificial insemination (AI) is commonly used for breeding of horses. Selecting high quality semen is critical to AI success but is difficult to achieve. In this study, we investigate the potential of generating antibodies against stallion sperm to identify subpopulations of post-thaw sperm based on surface markers. Female Balb/C mice are immunized with semen from a 24-year-old fertile stallion followed by booster immunizations each week for at least six weeks. Monoclonal antibodies are generated by fusion of myeloma cells to mouse spleen cells. Eight monoclonal antibodies resulting from these fusions are subdivided into four immunostaining patterns. These patterns differentially recognize …

Comparative Analysis Of Clavicular Tunnel Confìguration For Coracoclavicular Ligament Reconstruction, Mark Omwansa

Masters Theses

A number of coracoclavicular ligament reconstructions are carried out each year and post surgical fractures of the clavicle have been reported. The primary objective of this research is to develop a comparative metrics that compares clavicular tunnel configurations used in coracoclavicular reconstruction techniques. The goal of this comparison is to reduce post surgical failures due to clavicle fractures. The present analysis compared two techniques { a single 3 mm clavicular tunnel and the other double 6 mm tunnels { experimentally, using Four-point bending testing and Finite Element Analysis (FEA). A unique method, slicing, was used to create an FE clavicle …

Physicochemical Characterization Of Novel 1,1 0-Phenanthrolines, Dominic Millheim Dec 2014

Physicochemical Characterization Of Novel 1,1 0-Phenanthrolines, Dominic Millheim

Masters Theses

1,10-Phenanthroline is a well-known and often-used ligand with a variety of interesting properties and applications to both organic and inorganic chemistry. Interest in novel 1,10-phenanthrolines substituted at the 5- and 6- position has grown recently due to their interesting fluorometric and spectroscopic properties. They have been evaluated recently for applications including chemical sensors, chemical indicators, pharmacological targets and bioactive reagents.

1,10-Phenanthroline, an epoxidated synthetic intermediate, and a novel 5,6- disubstituted aminoalcohol derivative were studied to determine the degree of influence that iterative physical and chemical transformations have on the donor properties of the N-C-C-N pocket. Multiple analytical techniques including potentiometry …

Trade Secret Fair Use, Deepa Varadarajan Dec 2014

Trade Secret Fair Use, Deepa Varadarajan

Faculty Publications By Year

Trade secret law arose to help companies protect confidential information (e.g., the Coca-Cola formula) from competitors seeking to copy their innovative efforts. But companies increasingly use trade secret law to block a wide swath of information from the scrutinizing eyes of consumers, public watchdog groups, and potential improvers. Companies can do this, in part, because trade secret law lacks clear limiting doctrines that consider the social benefits of unauthorized use. For example, trade secret law makes no allowance for the departing employee that uses proprietary information to create a substantially improved product or disclose public health risks.

This Article argues …

Intention Tremor And Deficits Of Sensory Feedback Control In Multiple Sclerosis: A Pilot Study, Megan Heenan, Robert A. Scheidt, Douglas Woo, Scott A. Beardsley Dec 2014

Intention Tremor And Deficits Of Sensory Feedback Control In Multiple Sclerosis: A Pilot Study, Megan Heenan, Robert A. Scheidt, Douglas Woo, Scott A. Beardsley

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Background

Intention tremor and dysmetria are leading causes of upper extremity disability in Multiple Sclerosis (MS). The development of effective therapies to reduce tremor and dysmetria is hampered by insufficient understanding of how the distributed, multi-focal lesions associated with MS impact sensorimotor control in the brain. Here we describe a systems-level approach to characterizing sensorimotor control and use this approach to examine how sensory and motor processes are differentially impacted by MS.

Methods

Eight subjects with MS and eight age- and gender-matched healthy control subjects performed visually-guided flexion/extension tasks about the elbow to characterize a sensory feedback control model that …

The Determinants Of The Salary In Nba And The Overpayment In The Year Of Signing A New Contract, Nuoya Li Dec 2014

The Determinants Of The Salary In Nba And The Overpayment In The Year Of Signing A New Contract, Nuoya Li

All Theses

Based on lots of previous research, the salary in National Basketball Association is determined by both personal characteristics and on-court performance. However, which kind of performance seems more important? Furthermore, does signing a new contract have any incentive or effect on the player's performance which makes the player be overpaid or underpaid in the year of signing the contract? And which kind of contracts and what kind of players tend to be overpaid? In my paper I introduce the on-court performance, personal characteristics and salary. Then I build a connection between them and run 2 regressions to analyze the determinants …

Data Transport System, Rahav Dor Dec 2014

Data Transport System, Rahav Dor

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

To facilitate the WU Smart Home research [21] we built a system that collects data from sensors and uploads the data to the cloud. The system supports data collection from multiple locations (typically apartments) that are independent from each other, endowing the system with two benefit: distributed data collection and alleviating privacy concerns. Each location is managed by a local micro-server (μServer) that is responsible for receiving data packets from sensors and managing their transient storage. Periodically the μServer triggers a data transport process that moves the data to a cloud server where it is stored in a centralized database. …

Characterizing Navigational Tools In A Virtual Search Task, Austin Riggs Dec 2014

Characterizing Navigational Tools In A Virtual Search Task, Austin Riggs

All Theses

The goal of this thesis is to characterize and empirically compare navigational tools in the context of a virtual inspection task. The framework considers both directional-cue navigational tools (e.g., GPS navigation arrows) and trail navigational tools (e.g.,footprints) in comparison to a control condition. Characterizing the tools allows for documented relationships between specific navigational tool-performance combinations. It is intended that by characterizing and comparing the tools a more advantageous use of navigational tools will emerge to increase the benefit provided to both the users and implementers of virtual environments. The focus of the metrics in the paper were distance traveled, speed …

On The Compensation And Activity Of Corporate Boards, Nga Nguyen Dec 2014

On The Compensation And Activity Of Corporate Boards, Nga Nguyen

Finance Faculty Research and Publications

Within the nexus of contracts that makes up the firm, relatively little is known about the relationship between firms and their directors. Using a unique dataset comprising director compensation and activity, I find that firms use meeting fees and equity-based compensation as substitutes. In addition, paying directors for attending board/committee meetings is associated with more active boards and more active monitoring and advising committees. In contrast, a higher proportion of equity-based compensation is positively associated with monitoring activity but negatively associated with advising activity. Furthermore, more active boards and committees are paid more. Finally, I find that the variation in …

The Proposed Capital Penalty Phase Rules Of Evidence, David Mccord, Mark W. Bennett Dec 2014

The Proposed Capital Penalty Phase Rules Of Evidence, David Mccord, Mark W. Bennett

Cardozo Law Review

No person or organization has ever proposed model rules of evidence for the unique penalty phase of a death penalty trial. Now a law professor skilled in the scholarship of both death penalty jurisprudence and evidence, and a federal judge with extensive federal death penalty experience, do just that. This work transcends the hodge-podge of evidentiary approaches taken by the various state jurisdictions and federal law. The result is the Proposed CAPITAL PENALTY PHASE RULES OF EVIDENCE - clear and uniform rules to govern the wide-ranging evidentiary issues that arise in the penalty phase of capital trials. Death penalty trials, …

Depauw Women During World War I: Female Citizenship And Higher Education In Early 20th Century America, Kristine Ruhl

Student Research

Women at DePauw University were propelled into positions of power on campus with the outbreak of World War I and America’s eventual entrance into the conflict. As male enlistment numbers rose, female students were forced to fill vacant jobs in organizations and clubs, as well as in the workforce. Working as educated people, the women at DePauw adjusted to the conflicting messages of the university and the government and developed their own understanding of what it meant to be a woman in World War I. Facing down widespread stereotypes, women pursued unparalleled positions of power during the war, thus, female …

Filipino Mothers’ Self-Efficacy In Managing Anger And In Parenting, And Parental Rejection As Predictors Of Child Delinquency, Mary Angeline A. Daganzo, Liane Peña Alampay, Jennifer E. Lansford

Psychology Department Faculty Publications

The authors tested a model in which Filipino mothers’ self-efficacy in managing anger/irritation influenced child delinquency via two parenting variables: parental self-efficacy and parental rejection. Structured interviews were conducted with 99 mothers twice with an interval of one year with efficacy beliefs and rejection measured in the first year and child delinquency data collected in the following year. Path analyses showed that self-efficacy in managing anger/irritation negatively predicted child delinquency indirectly through the sequential mediation of parental selfefficacy and parental rejection. Results provided further evidence for the importance of efficacy beliefs, particularly self-efficacy in managing anger/irritation and parental self-efficacy, in …

Results revealed that the three significant predictors accounted for 60% of the variance in perceived team effectiveness. The proposed model of input-process-output was partially …

Exploring The Invocation Of Emotion In Presidential Speeches, Cengiz Erisen, José Villalobos Dec 2014

Exploring The Invocation Of Emotion In Presidential Speeches, Cengiz Erisen, José Villalobos

Departmental Papers (PS)

Scholars have long explored why presidential rhetoric is important and how it matters for public leadership and policy-making. However, relatively few works have considered the role that emotion plays in leadership communication and no research has conducted a thorough examination of the various types of emotions invoked in presidential rhetoric, their frequency, or how they have shaped presidential discourse over time. In this study, presidential speeches across 13 administrations (1933–2011) are examined to provide a first assessment of the extent to which US presidents have invoked fear, anger, and hope across policy domains and key types of speeches.

Comparative Analysis Of Varying Theoretical Frameworks In Argentine Music Therapy., Talia Girton Dec 2014

Comparative Analysis Of Varying Theoretical Frameworks In Argentine Music Therapy., Talia Girton

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

One of the most shocking cultural phenomena that American visitors to Argentina experience is the prevalence of psychoanalytic theory, thought, and practice. It is so embedded into the Argentine way of life that its terminology is sprinkled throughout their daily speech and the cost of regular therapy sessions is factored into the monthly budget along with food, rent, and clothing. The widespread use of psychoanalysis is especially confounding to those of us in the mental health care field in the United States, as the enthusiasm for psychoanalysis and Freudian theory has receded among the intellectual community largely because it is …

Building Reconciliation In Bosnia And Herzegovina : The Effects Of Ingroup Identification, Outgroup Trust, And Intergroup Forgiveness On Intergroup Contact Quantity., Branka Damjanovic

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

After the violent breakup of Yugoslavia, it was necessary to find a way for Bosnia and Herzegovina’s three main ethnic groups to live together again. The Dayton Peace Agreement was thought to be the answer. Signed in 1995, it provided a new framework for the country, establishing the Republika Srpska for the Serbs, the Brcko District as an autonomous region, and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was further divided into cantons between the Bosnian Croats and the Bosniaks. With such a political structure, it was of interest to survey the quantity of intergroup contact between the groups today, …

Death Penalty, Josh D. Moore Dec 2014

Death Penalty, Josh D. Moore

Mercer Law Review

The Georgia Supreme Court addressed two death sentences on direct appeal in this survey period, affirming both of them, and addressed four more death penalty cases at various stages of collateral review, leaving death sentences intact in all but one case. Claims of ineffective assistance of counsel frequently dominated the court's discussion of these cases, playing a central role in all but two of them. The court, however, also addressed some important issues touching on mental-health evaluations and evidence, lethal injection, death qualification, and victim-impact testimony

Torts, Phillip Comer Griffeth, Cash V. Morris

Mercer Law Review

This Article surveys recent developments in Georgia tort law between June 1, 2013 and May 31, 2014. During this survey period, the Georgia Supreme Court decided several cases of significance in the medical malpractice arena, and a seven-judge panel of the Georgia Court of Appeals was called upon to decide a slip-and-fall case. Some might argue that a few of these cases were victories for the plaintiff's bar. However, a close reading of the opinions reflects some well-reasoned and impressive legal arguments concerning the gross negligence and summary judgment standards applied by Georgia's appellate jurists. These opinions will be cited …

Real Property, Linda S. Finley Dec 2014

Real Property, Linda S. Finley

Mercer Law Review

Any survey of Real Property Law will certainly include a report of the "usual suspects" including boundaries, easements, zoning, and the like, but today's real estate practitioner is expected to be knowledgeable about other related topics such as the unauthorized practice of law, taxation, the rights of consumers in foreclosure, and other varied topics. No survey can discuss every relevant case or topic, but the purpose here is to provide the reader with a broad understanding of "hot" topics and, perhaps, lead the reader to more specific research and debate about these topics.
