Goodness And Truth: An Essay On Ralph Hancock's The Responsibility Of Reason, Joseph M. Spencer
Goodness And Truth: An Essay On Ralph Hancock's The Responsibility Of Reason, Joseph M. Spencer
BYU Studies
Joseph Spencer explains the shift in thinking that occurred about five hundred years ago: very generally speaking, premoderns took the ideal to be metaphysically fundamental, and moderns take the physical to be metaphysically fundamental. Latter-day Saint thinkers may fall into one camp or the other. Ralph Hancock's The Responsibility of Reason is a defense of a premodern conception of the world, mobilized by an attempt to reveal real problems in certain modern conceptions of the world. But Hancock's view that the moral order is total and consistent proves to be limiting. The Restoration not only took its rise in the …
The Myth Of Religious Violence: Secular Ideology And The Roots Of Modern Conflict, William T. Cavanaugh, Bryan W. Cottle
The Myth Of Religious Violence: Secular Ideology And The Roots Of Modern Conflict, William T. Cavanaugh, Bryan W. Cottle
BYU Studies
Whether or not religion is essentially prone to violence is not a new debate within academia. While many scholars argue religion creates more violence in the world than any other institution, others argue that secular movements are by far the greater culprit, and the remainder struggle to find a middle ground. Despite disagreements, the scholarly discussion has largely hinged on the formation of a religious versus secular dichotomy. Does this paradigm damage our appraisal of religious violence, and are there alternative paradigms to consider?
William Cavanaugh's work, The Myth of Religious Violence, answers in the affirmative. Cavanaugh, a professor …

Ender's Game, Orson S. Card, Scott R. Parkin, Gavin Hood
BYU Studies
Orson Scott Card might well be the most versatile, and one of the most Mormon, fiction authors writing today--a true "storyteller in Zion," as suggested by the title of one collection of his essays. Though primarily known as an author of science fiction and fantasy, Card has also written historical, slice-of-life, literary, and horror fiction for print, stage, and screen, as well as a wealth of essays, reviews, and social commentary. He has been recognized for his excellence by such diverse organizations as the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) and the Association for Mormon Letters (AML).

The Nonlinear Price Fynamics Of Us Equity Etfs, Gunduz Caginalp, Mark Desantis, Akin Sayrak
The Nonlinear Price Fynamics Of Us Equity Etfs, Gunduz Caginalp, Mark Desantis, Akin Sayrak
Economics Faculty Articles and Research
We investigate the price dynamics of large market-capitalization U.S. equity exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in order to uncover trader motivations and strategy. We show that prices of highly liquid ETFs can deviate significantly from their daily net asset values. By adjusting for changes in valuations, we report the impact of non-classical variables including price trend and volatility using data from 2008 to 2011. We find a cubic nonlinearity in the trend suggesting that traders are not only aware of the underreaction of others, but also self-optimize by anticipating others' reactions, and sell when the uptrend is stronger than usual.
The Special Skills Of Advocacy, Warren E. Burger
The Special Skills Of Advocacy, Warren E. Burger
Fordham Law Review
To commemorate our founding in 1914, the Board of Editors has selected six influential pieces published by the Law Review over the past 100 years and will republish one piece in each issue.
The third piece selected by the Board is The Special Skills of Advocacy, a lecture delivered by the late Chief Justice Warren E. Burger that is among the most cited works in the Law Review’s history. Speaking at Fordham Law School on November 26, 1973, Chief Justice Burger advocated for law schools to better prepare students for skillful courtroom advocacy, declaring that “[w]e must acknowledge, …

In the earliest phase of the project, we met several times with members of the FMCOA to discuss and …
Recommendations For Kytc’S Railway/Highway At-Grade Crossing Surface Management Practices, Brett R. Malloy, Jerry G. Rose, Macy L. Purcell
Recommendations For Kytc’S Railway/Highway At-Grade Crossing Surface Management Practices, Brett R. Malloy, Jerry G. Rose, Macy L. Purcell
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
An ideal Railway/Highway At-Grade Crossing Management program involves selecting costeffective practices when designing new crossings and rehabilitating existing crossings. This report outlines two strategies to enhance KYTC’s existing program. First, it describes a process that uses decision-option diagrams to optimize the assessment and implementation of engineering solutions in order to restore desired smoothness, minimize settlement in the postconstruction phase, and foster acceptable long-term performance of crossings following their rehabilitation. Decision-option diagrams rely on assessments that are site-specific and based on historical performance, the present observed performance and condition, and the measureable parameters specific to particular crossings. To supplement this process, …
Railway/Highway At-Grade Crossing Surface Management: An Overview, Brett R. Malloy, Jerry G. Rose
Railway/Highway At-Grade Crossing Surface Management: An Overview, Brett R. Malloy, Jerry G. Rose
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
This report draws on data from around the United States to describe the features of a successful railway/highway at-grade crossing management program; it emphasizes the highway/trackbed structures and crossing surfaces. Developing a structurally adequate crossing system is imperative, as this will produce a smooth surface and a stable highway/trackbed that prolongs crossings’ lifespans while keeping maintenance costs low and minimizing the number of disruptions encountered by highway and railway traffic. An overview of the guidance issued by several transportation agencies and organizations to facilitate the design and construction of railway/highway at-grade crossings is included here. Equally important to developing a …
An Empirical Analysis Of Diversity In The Legal Profession, Jason P. Nance, Paul E. Madsen
An Empirical Analysis Of Diversity In The Legal Profession, Jason P. Nance, Paul E. Madsen
UF Law Faculty Publications
The purpose of this Study is to empirically examine the diversity of the legal profession. The primary distinctive features of this empirical analysis are that it evaluates diversity in the legal profession by (a) carefully comparing it against other prestigious professions that have significant barriers to entry, and (b) focusing on young individuals who recently began their careers. These distinctions are made to isolate anomalies that are more likely caused by forces specific to the legal profession rather than general social forces that limit the eligibility of historically disadvantaged groups to pursue prestigious employment opportunities. Further, by narrowing our focus …
A Comparative Study Of Generalized Arc-Consistency Algorithms, Olufikayo S. Adetunji
A Comparative Study Of Generalized Arc-Consistency Algorithms, Olufikayo S. Adetunji
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In this thesis, we study several algorithms for enforcing Generalized Arc-Consistency (GAC), which is the most popular consistency property for solving Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSPs) with backtrack search. The popularity of such algorithms stems from their relative low cost and effectiveness in improving the performance of search. Virtually all commercial and public- domain constraint solvers include some implementation of a generic GAC algorithm. In recent years, several algorithms for enforcing GAC have been proposed in the literature that relies on increasingly complex data structures and mechanisms to improve performance. In this thesis, we study, assess, and compare a basic algorithm …

Principals Who Supervise Teachers Of The Deaf: A Mixed Methods Study, Tanya Hilligoss
Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
School principals are responsible for supervising educational staff. Since the majority of students who are deaf or hard of hearing are served in public schools, it is important for principals to understand how to supervise teachers of the deaf. The purpose of this study was to explore the role of school principals who supervise teachers of the deaf in public schools in the United States.
In this mixed methods study, data was collected separately and sequentially, using an explanatory sequential design. Information was gathered from state-level personnel using a web-based survey for quantitative data. Data collected included: a) number of …

The Predictive Validity Of Pre-Admission Measures On Podiatric Medical School Performance, Kevin M. Smith
Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This study explored the influence of pre-admission measures on podiatric medical school performance. The purpose of the study was to predict which students are most likely to succeed in podiatric medical school when admitted, and potentially decrease the cost of attrition experienced by the student and institution. A review of the literature on medical school admissions was completed and used to develop this research.
Podiatric medical students from a Midwestern institution who enrolled between the years 2000 and 2015 were included as the sample for the study (n = 804). Pre-admission measures that were available for the subjects included Medical …

Psychometrics And Test-Enhanced Learning In A Patient-Centered Learning Curriculum, Syed Haris Ali
Theses and Dissertations
Validity and reliability of scores obtained on Multiple-choice questions (MCQs), as well as the benefits of test-enhanced learning, have been of interest to medical educator scholars. Presented in this dissertation are four composite studies on these themes. The following hypotheses were tested:
1. Increased MCQ distractor functioning increases the validity and reliability of obtained scores.
2. Correction of item writing flaws (along with enhancement of tested cognitive level) and replacement or removal of non-functioning distractors equally improves psychometric characteristics of MCQs.
3. Repeated testing via free-response items enhances the retention of knowledge of human anatomy, compared with repeated or once-testing …
L’Immigrazione Siciliana A Monterey In California E Il Suo Retaggio, Alexandria Aliotti
L’Immigrazione Siciliana A Monterey In California E Il Suo Retaggio, Alexandria Aliotti
The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal
The many Sicilians who emigrated from their homeland to the United States in search of a better life have a unique history, whose presence can still be seen today in cities across the United States. The history of Sicilian immigration to Monterey, California is especially fascinating; not only did these Sicilians help create the historic “Cannery Row,” the most famous street in Monterey, but also they were able to successfully bring their traditions, culture, and dialect with them. In Monterey, the Sicilian immigrants recreated the most important religious holidays and by forming a tight-knit community, they ensured that their homeland …
Evidencia Del Hiperdialectalismo Castellano Por Medio Del Cid, Jessica Bodford
Evidencia Del Hiperdialectalismo Castellano Por Medio Del Cid, Jessica Bodford
The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal
Hyperdialectism describes the act of pronouncing words or phrases within a dialect that exaggerates the qualities distinguishing that particular style of speech from those around it. The current work explores literary evidence of hyperdialectism in El Cantar de Myo Çid (The Song of My Cid), the oldest preserved epic poem of Castile that portrays the adventures of a fictional Castilian hero in the time of the Iberian Reconquista. At the time of its circulation, circa 1200 CE, Castile served as a buffer state between Asturias-León and Aragon, which contributed to the economic and social hardships faced by the Castilian people. …

Der Begriff Der Sprache In Emine Sevgi Özdamars Werken, Junhao Chen
The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal
Emine Sevgi Özdamar is a Turkish-German actress and author. She is famous for her intercultural representation and blurring the line between statehood and language in her literary works. She has a unique capacity to hybridize languages for example, the title of her collection of short stories Mutterzunge. This essay is a study that combines the discipline of literary studies and translation studies to investigate the concept of language in two Emine Sevgi Özdamar’s works Mutterzunge: Erzählungen and Die Brücke Vom Goldenen Horn: Roman. This study focuses on three dimensions of the concept of language in her works: language as violence, …
Une Connaissance Intermédiaire: La Parole Et L’Objet Chez Ponge, Lukas Ovrom
Une Connaissance Intermédiaire: La Parole Et L’Objet Chez Ponge, Lukas Ovrom
The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal
In this essay, I investigate the materialism of Francis Ponge from an epistemological perspective using “La Cruche” (“The Carafe”), a poem that appears in Ponge’s Pièces(1962). The following question guides the analysis: how does Ponge use an ordinary object—a carafe in this case—to examine the role of language as a mediating device in man’s quest for knowledge of the material world? In the first section, I identify the object as a metaphor for the word (parole). Next, I use this metaphor to argue that Ponge sees language as an intermediary between man and his material environment. Much like the carafe, …
La Langue De La Soumission Et De La Libération Dans Le Cahier D’Un Retour Au Pays Natal, Beni Ransom
La Langue De La Soumission Et De La Libération Dans Le Cahier D’Un Retour Au Pays Natal, Beni Ransom
The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal
This essay examines how Aimé Césaire’s Cahier d’un retour au pays natal employs repetition, anaphora, and other rhetorical devices to embody the way in which Martinique’s explosive, revolutionary cultural richness is generated as a response to conditions of oppression. The repetitious and anaphoric qualities of Césaire’s poetry are employed at the start of the poem to emphasize the tedium of an oppressed landscape, and the use of repetition and anaphora gives form to the repetitive, slavish labor of Martinicans in rum distilleries and the everyday life of the classroom, where Christian missionaries drill Martinicans with the same lessons despite their …
