Carbonate Orientational Order And Superlattice Structure In Vaterite, Jianwei Wang, Fuxiang Zhang, Jiaming Zhang, Rodney C. Ewing, Udo Becker, Zhonghou Cai

Faculty Publications

© 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Vaterite is considered to play an important role as a precursor phase in the formation of calcium carbonate phases, including those related to biomineralization. An accurate description of vaterite's structure associated with the order of carbonate groups is essential to understanding the formation, stabilization, and functionality of vaterite in organisms. Molecular dynamics simulations, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy have been combined in order to investigate the structure of vaterite. The electrostatic interactions between Ca and neighboring CO3 groups promote local and long-range ordering of CO3 groups, which may result in a …

Faculty Publications

Daily distributions of eclosion and mating activities of Pseudopidorus fasciata Walker (Lepidoptera: Zygaenidae) were recorded under natural and various laboratory conditions. Eclosion of this insect exhibited circadian gating in constant darkness (DD) but not in constant light (LL) at 28°C. Under natural conditions, the majority of adults emerged in midmorning with an eclosion peak around 1000 hours. The eclosion distribution was significantly affected by ambient temperature but not by photoperiod under laboratory conditions. Eclosion was more spread out at 22°C than at higher temperatures, and peak eclosion times were advanced at higher temperatures up to 30°C. Under natural and laboratory …

The Roles Of The Shikimate Pathway Genes, Aroa And Arob, In Virulence, Growth And Uv Tolerance Of Burkholderia Glumae Strain 411gr-6, Hari Sharan Karki, Jong Hyun Ham

Faculty Publications

Burkholderia glumae is the major causal agent of bacterial panicle blight of rice, which is a growing disease problem for rice growers worldwide. In our previous study, some B.glumae strains showed pigmentation phenotypes producing at least two (yellow-green and purple) pigment compounds in casein-peptone-glucose agar medium. The B.glumae strains LSUPB114 and LSUPB116 are pigment-deficient mutant derivatives of the virulent and pigment-proficient strain 411gr-6, having mini-Tn5gus insertions in aroA encoding 3-phosphoshikimate 1-carboxyvinyltransferase and aroB encoding 3-dehydroquinate synthase, respectively. Both enzymes are known to be involved in the shikimate pathway, which leads to the synthesis of aromatic amino acids. Here, we demonstrate …

Neurocognitive Underpinnings Of Language Disorder: Contrasting Schizophrenia And Mood Disorders, Alex S. Cohen, Tracey Auster, Dallas Callaway, Rebecca K. Macaulay, Kyle S. Minor Dec 2014

Neurocognitive Underpinnings Of Language Disorder: Contrasting Schizophrenia And Mood Disorders, Alex S. Cohen, Tracey Auster, Dallas Callaway, Rebecca K. Macaulay, Kyle S. Minor

Faculty Publications

Language disorder is a deleterious, but poorly understood, symptom of schizophrenia. Burgeoning research suggests that it also occurs in depression and bipolar disorders. Building on prior research, the present study evaluated the degree to which language disorder was associated with neurocognitive deficits in a sample of patients with schizophrenia and mood disorders. Employed in this study were a standard neurocognitive battery and a behavior-based analysis of language disorder from natural speech. Speech samples were collected from two separate counterbalanced conditions administered a week apart. During an “activity” speech condition, participants discussed their daily activities, hobbies and interests. During a “social” …

Subsampling Reduces Sorting Effort For Waterfowl Foods In Salt-Marsh Core Samples, Mark C. Livolsi, Kevin M. Ringelman, Christopher K. Williams Dec 2014

Subsampling Reduces Sorting Effort For Waterfowl Foods In Salt-Marsh Core Samples, Mark C. Livolsi, Kevin M. Ringelman, Christopher K. Williams

Faculty Publications

Waterfowl researchers often use soil core samples to estimate food availability in foraging habitats, and these estimates are needed for bioenergetic models of carrying capacity. However, core sampling is frequently a time-and resource-intensive process, and some researchers have suggested that subsampling may be a valuable way to reduce processing time. We evaluated whether 10% and 25% by mass subsampling are appropriate techniques for reducing core-sorting effort while maintaining precision for samples taken in six separate habitat types along the Delaware bayshore. We found no significant difference between biomass found in 100% sorted cores and estimated biomass obtained by 10% and …

Experimental Translocations: Pitfalls And Alternatives For Quantifying Animal Movement In Fragmented Landscapes, Luke L. Powell, Philip C. Stouffer Dec 2014

Experimental Translocations: Pitfalls And Alternatives For Quantifying Animal Movement In Fragmented Landscapes, Luke L. Powell, Philip C. Stouffer

Faculty Publications

As anthropogenic change continues to fragment terrestrial habitats, conservation biologists are increasingly concerned with how wild animals move through fragmented landscapes. Experimental translocations have recently gained popularity as a technique to determine landscape permeability by wild animals in fragmented landscapes. In experimental translocations, researchers capture individuals — usually adults — and release them elsewhere in order to determine whether they are able to cross the landscape and return to their original location. We argue that most experimental translocations have two inherent confounding factors — age of the individual and homing ability — and that the narrow spatiotemporal scale of the …

Step Selection Techniques Uncover The Environmental Predictors Of Space Use Patterns In Flocks Of Amazonian Birds, Jonathan R. Potts, Karl Mokross, Philip C. Stouffer, Mark A. Lewis Dec 2014

Step Selection Techniques Uncover The Environmental Predictors Of Space Use Patterns In Flocks Of Amazonian Birds, Jonathan R. Potts, Karl Mokross, Philip C. Stouffer, Mark A. Lewis

Faculty Publications

Understanding the behavioral decisions behind animal movement and space use patterns is a key challenge for behavioral ecology. Tools to quantify these patterns from movement and animal-habitat interactions are vital for transforming ecology into a predictive science. This is particularly important in environments undergoing rapid anthropogenic changes, such as the Amazon rainforest, where animals face novel landscapes. Insectivorous bird flocks are key elements of avian biodiversity in the Amazonian ecosystem. Therefore, disentangling and quantifying the drivers behind their movement and space use patterns is of great importance for Amazonian conservation. We use a step selection function (SSF) approach to uncover …

Linking Individual-Tree And Whole-Stand Models For Forest Growth And Yield Prediction, Quang V. Cao Dec 2014

Linking Individual-Tree And Whole-Stand Models For Forest Growth And Yield Prediction, Quang V. Cao

Faculty Publications

Background: Different types of growth and yield models provide essential information for making informed decisions on how to manage forests. Whole-stand models often provide well-behaved outputs at the stand level, but lack information on stand structures. Detailed information from individual-tree models and size-class models typically suffers from accumulation of errors. The disaggregation method, in assuming that predictions from a whole-stand model are reliable, partitions these outputs to individual trees. On the other hand, the combination method seeks to improve stand-level predictions from both whole-stand and individual-tree models by combining them. Methods: Data from 100 plots randomly selected from the Southwide …

“Hot Hand” In The National Basketball Association Point Spread Betting Market: A 34-Year Analysis, Benjamin Waggoner, Daniel Wines, Brian P. Soebbing, Chad S. Seifried, Jean Michael Martinez Dec 2014

“Hot Hand” In The National Basketball Association Point Spread Betting Market: A 34-Year Analysis, Benjamin Waggoner, Daniel Wines, Brian P. Soebbing, Chad S. Seifried, Jean Michael Martinez

Faculty Publications

Several articles have looked at factors that affect the adjustments of point spreads, based on hot hands or streaks, for smaller durations of time. This study examines these effects for 34 regular seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Estimating a Seemingly Unrelated Regression model using all 34 seasons, all streaks significantly impacted point spreads and difference in actual points. When estimating each season individually, differences emerged particularly examining winning and losing streaks of six games or more. The results indicate both the presence of momentum effects and the gambler’s fallacy.

Eigenfunctions Of Unbounded Support For Embedded Eigenvalues Of Locally Perturbed Periodic Graph Operators, Stephen P. Shipman Dec 2014

Eigenfunctions Of Unbounded Support For Embedded Eigenvalues Of Locally Perturbed Periodic Graph Operators, Stephen P. Shipman

Faculty Publications

It is known that if a locally perturbed periodic self-adjoint operator on a combinatorial or quantum graph admits an eigenvalue embedded in the continuous spectrum, then the associated eigenfunction is compactly supported—that is, if the Fermi surface is irreducible, which occurs generically in dimension two or higher. This article constructs a class of operators whose Fermi surface is reducible for all energies by coupling several periodic systems. The components of the Fermi surface correspond to decoupled spaces of hybrid states, and in certain frequency bands, some components contribute oscillatory hybrid states (corresponding to spectrum) and other components contribute only exponential …

Do Degree Maps Facilitate Student Success?, James W. Marion Jr, Jason M. Ruckert, Tracey M. Richardson

Publications

The purpose of this mixed method study was to explore the potential impact of degree maps on facilitating student success. The concept grew out of quantitative evidence suggesting students using degree maps are more likely to enroll in our programs, continue in our programs, register for more classes per term, and have better graduation rates than those students who do not use a degree map. Our methodology included qualitative coding of focus group responses (n = 28) then using those emerging themes to inform a survey instrument to collect student perceptions about the degree map’s impact (n = 211). This …

Americanized Catholicism? A Response To Thomas Schärtl, Dennis M. Doyle Dec 2014

Americanized Catholicism? A Response To Thomas Schärtl, Dennis M. Doyle

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

I stand in fundamental agreement with what Thomas Schärtl has said in his article describing recent trends in US Catholicism. I am a lifelong Catholic and a lifelong Democrat. I felt personally distressed and discouraged by the support given to Mitt Romney and the Republicans by some leading US Catholic bishops. Most of this support may have technically passed the legal test of being nonpartisan, but undeniably it functioned in a partisan manner, as did the attacks launched on President Obama in the midst of a campaign to defend religious liberty. Schärtl’s analysis of these trends as reflecting marketing strategies …

Orientalism And "Authentic Homosexual": How "The Closet" Reinforces Hegemonic Knowledge And Binary Logic, Contributing To The Invisibility Of Non-Conforming Gender And Sexual Identities, Michelle Bonapace-Potvin Dec 2014

Orientalism And "Authentic Homosexual": How "The Closet" Reinforces Hegemonic Knowledge And Binary Logic, Contributing To The Invisibility Of Non-Conforming Gender And Sexual Identities, Michelle Bonapace-Potvin

Theses and Dissertations

The critique of Orientalism's binary logic finds a complementary analysis in the questioning of static sexual and gender categories. There is already significant research that points to these intersectional critiques—for instance, Joseph Massad's Desiring Arabs and Jasbir K. Puar’s Terrorist Assemblages: Homonationalism in Queer Times. In this paper, I will use analyses of Orientalism to review the ways in which hegemonic knowledge and binary logic contribute to the invisibility of non- conforming gender and sexual identities. In other words, I will use the language and lens of critiques of Orientalism to observe, analyze, and comment on the current politics of …

Implementation Of Two-Dimensional Time Accurate Flow Simulation On Moving Mesh Exploiting Mesh Rupturing, Yanan Gong

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

A two-dimensional dynamic moving mesh algorithm is implemented for simulating aerodynamic oscillating airfoils. The airfoil is inserted into a uniform unstructured background mesh by exploiting an new technique named mesh rupturing, which allows for significant geometry movement without grid regeneration or interpolation between grids. Then unsteady flow simulation results are presented and validated by several test cases. Previous methodologies for unsteady flow simulation are listed and compared, advantages and disadvantages of the new mesh technique are discussed and advice for further research as well.

Adaptive Underfrequency Load Shedding Based On Real Time Simulation, Mosab Salah Aldeen Mohamed Zeyada Dec 2014

Adaptive Underfrequency Load Shedding Based On Real Time Simulation, Mosab Salah Aldeen Mohamed Zeyada

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Conventional Underfrequency Load Shedding (UFLS) is used to balance generation and load when underfrequency conditions occur. It sheds a fixed, predetermined amount of load irrespective of disturbance location. Several adaptive UFLS schemes are proposed in the literature. Recent research discussed utilizing synchrophasor messages to implement adaptive UFLS but these studies have been using virtual PMUs. Of late, hardware implementations for adaptive UFLS scheme using actual Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) are reported but also these studies are based on small power systems. This study presents hardware implementation of adaptive UFLS based on real time simulation of IEEE39-bus system. The simulation tool …

Direct Torque Control Of An Lnduction Machine Using Multi-Layer Perceptron Network, Adithya Chandrashekharan

Masters Theses

In conventional direct torque control (DTC) scheme of induction motor (lM), Proportional Integral Controller (PI) is used as the speed controller. PI controller is more suitable in steady state condition and for linear system but both DTC and IM are mostly nonlinear. Multi-Layer perceptron neural network. (MLPNN) controller is more suitable and performs better than PI controller. The switching table of the conventional DTC is replaced by the MLPNN controller. The MLPNN inputs are, the magnitude of the stator flux, torque and the Voltage sectors. Levenberg-Marquardt back propagation technique has been used to train the MLPNN. The output of the …

A Remote Sensing Based Early Warning System For Algal Blooms In Kuwait Bay And Coastal Waters, Cameron Manche Dec 2014

A Remote Sensing Based Early Warning System For Algal Blooms In Kuwait Bay And Coastal Waters, Cameron Manche

Masters Theses

The Kuwait Bay and its coastal waters are being threatened by a perpetual hazard, the proliferation of harmful algal blooms (HABS). The frequency of HAB occurrences is a growing problem that is only reported subsequent to the onset of a HAB event. Little effort has been invested in investigating the spatial and temporal distribution of these events in Kuwait Bay and even less is known about their controlling factors. All previous studies within the Kuwait Bay have focused either on measuring nutrient availability and the biodiversity of algal species.

The overall study objective is four-fold: (1) to monitor the spatial …

Ancestor Worship In The Middle Sicán Theocratic State, Go Matsumoto Dec 2014

Ancestor Worship In The Middle Sicán Theocratic State, Go Matsumoto

Dissertations

The major focus of this dissertation is the ancestor worship that is inferred to have been practiced in the multiethnic Middle Sicán theocratic state (AD 950-1100) that prospered on the northern North Coast of Peru. The major objective is twofold: (1) demonstrating by archaeological means that ancestors were indeed worshipped in the Middle Sicán society and (2) elucidating the nature and role of the inferred ancestor cult and associated rituals and ceremonies. Ancestor (and the veneration of it) is one of the themes that have the deepest roots in the anthropological thoughts; nevertheless, many archaeologists have uncritically invoked ancestor veneration …

In The Wake Of A Merger: Consumer Reactions To Service Failures, Melinda A. Mclelland, Ronald E. Goldsmith Dec 2014

In The Wake Of A Merger: Consumer Reactions To Service Failures, Melinda A. Mclelland, Ronald E. Goldsmith

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

Customers are often overlooked during the merger process in both reality and the marketing literature. This research features an experiment with 431 U.S. consumers that assesses the impact of a service failure following a merger on a variety of consumer behaviors. Key results indicate that consumers are more likely to switch service providers if they experience a failure of any magnitude (major/minor) following a merger than if they experience the same failure in the absence of a merger. This finding emphasizes that firms involved in service mergers have to be extremely diligent about preventing customer defection and implement focused marketing …

Mining And Sustainable Communities: A Case Study Of The Red Dog Mine, Bob Loeffler Dec 2014

Mining And Sustainable Communities: A Case Study Of The Red Dog Mine, Bob Loeffler

ISER Articles

Politicians and planners work to attract economic development because of the desire to provide jobs and income for residents, and to find tax revenue to fund government services. Their focus is usually statewide: jobs, income, and taxes for Alaskans. This article is about the impact of one remote development project on nearby, Native communities. It is about the community effects of the Red Dog Lead and Zinc Mine in northwest Alaska. 2014 was the 25th anniversary for the mine, which began operation in 1989. This case study evaluates the mine’s effects on the communities after 25 years of operation. It …

The Determinants Of Small Business Success In Alaska: A Focus On The Creative Class, Mouhcine Guettabi Dec 2014

The Determinants Of Small Business Success In Alaska: A Focus On The Creative Class, Mouhcine Guettabi

ISER Articles

Although the contribution of small businesses and entrepreneurship to regional communities and the economy at large is widely supported in the literature, there does not seem to be a universally accepted definition for small businesses and entrepreneurship. Without an agreed upon definition, it is challenging for governments and policy makers to address the needs, concerns, and issues of these firms. It also makes it difficult to understand the link between small businesses and economic growth.

Indigenous Social And Economic Adaptations In Northern Alaska As Measures Of Resilience, Stephanie Martin Dec 2014

Indigenous Social And Economic Adaptations In Northern Alaska As Measures Of Resilience, Stephanie Martin

ISER Articles

I explored one aspect of social-ecological change in the context of an Alaskan human-Rangifer system, with the goal of understanding household adaptive responses to perturbations when there are multiple forces of change at play. I focused on households as one element of social resilience. Resilience is in the context of transition theory, in which communities are continually in a process of change, and perturbations are key points in the transition process. This case study of Anaktuvuk Pass, Alaska, USA, contributes to the understanding of cultural continuity and household resilience in times of rapid change by using household survey data from …

Uaa Graduates: How Many Stay And Work In Alaska?, Alexandra Hill, Gunnar Knapp, Blake Steenhoven

ISER Reports

More and more people have been graduating from the University of Alaska Anchorage in the past decade. Do they stay in Alaska? What kinds of jobs do they have? How much do they earn? It turns out that most of them stay in Alaska for at least five years after they graduate, they work throughout the economy, and by five years after they graduate their average earnings double. Around one-quarter do leave within a few years. But Alaska’s population on the whole is transient, and it looks as if UAA graduates are no more likely than other Alaskans to leave …
