The Effect Of Diaspora On Modern Jewish Belief, Jessica Colmerauer Dec 2014

The Effect Of Diaspora On Modern Jewish Belief, Jessica Colmerauer

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph:

The religion of Judaism is one of the oldest religions in the world, dating back to as early as the second millennium B.C.E. It is the oldest surviving monotheistic religion and shares some common history with both Christianity and Islam, which are also considered “Abrahamic religions.” Although many original crucial philosophies remain, some beliefs vary between different modern movements.

Instantiation: Academia's Pop-Up Museum, Corina M. Iannaggi, Kiersten F. Latham

Proceedings from the Document Academy

This article provides an overview of the creation and installation of the Document Academy (DOCAM) 2014 Instantiation, an experimental exhibition intended to develop a three dimensional representation of the DOCAM 2014 participants’ spoken presentations. During the installation process, it was evident that the Instantiation resembled a current trend in the museum profession known as “The Pop-Up Museum.” An evaluation of the Instantiation in the context of the Pop-Up Museum uncovered a similar core objective, the ability to create meaningful conversations centered around the participants’ documents on display. This objective was supported by participants’ responses to follow-up questions about their …

An (Un)Session: A Copy Of A Fake Of The Identical Facsimile Reproduced From The Real Original, Kiersten F. Latham, Corina M. Iannaggi

Proceedings from the Document Academy

This paper describes one session from the 2014 Document Academy that used an atypical presentation style inspired by the unconference trend. The session explored the meaning and language used to describe and discuss representations of documents and was purposefully open-ended by design. By incorporating the Document Academy participants as active members of the presentation, we were able to create a space that encouraged the sharing of thoughts and expertise leading to rich discussion of the proposed topic. Here we provide an overview of the process which led to a session centered around collaboration and interaction with the audience and provide …

Identifying An Archetype: The Hipponion Tablet And Regional Variations In The Orphic Gold Lamellae, Shellie A. Smith Dec 2014

Identifying An Archetype: The Hipponion Tablet And Regional Variations In The Orphic Gold Lamellae, Shellie A. Smith

Proceedings from the Document Academy

Over the past century and a half, about 40 Orphic gold lamellae have been discovered throughout the Mediterranean. These tablets were buried with initiates of the Orphic Mysteries, and served as indicators of the deceased’s elevated status in both this life and the afterlife. Many of the lamellae contained instructions for the deceased, guiding them to the blessed area of the Underworld that was promised to them by becoming initiates of the Orphic tradition.

Orphism as a cult had no set structure; rather, the practices seemed to have varied from region to region. The cult did not worship in a …

Psychology Publications

The purpose of this paper is to extend to the field of relationship science, recent discussions and suggested changes in open research practises. We demonstrate different ways that greater transparency of the research process in our field will accelerate scientific progress by increasing accuracy of reported research findings. Importantly, we make concrete recommendations for how relationship researchers can transition to greater disclosure of research practices in a manner that is sensitive to the unique design features of methodologies employed by relationship scientists. We discuss how to implement these recommendations for four different research designs regularly used in relationship research and …

Paediatrics Publications

The melanocortin-4-receptor gene (MC4R) is a key regulator of energy homeostasis, food intake and body weight. MC4R gene mutations are associated with early-onset severe obesity. Most patients are heterozygotes, with some reports of homozygotes and compound het-erozygotes. The authors report a case involving an eight-year-old girl with progressive weight gain from infancy, body mass index 44 kg/m: (>97th percentile), hyperphagia, hvperinsulinemia and increased linear growth. There was no phenotvpe of morbid obesity in the parents or sibling. Coding regions and intron-exon boundaries of the genes encoding leptin, Ieptin receptor, pro-opiomelanocortin and MC4R were analyzed. Two heterozygous coding mutations in …

Tumor cells have unstable genomes relative to non-tumor cells. Decreased DNA integrity resulting from tumor cell instability is important in generating favorable therapeutic indices, and intact DNA repair mediates resistance to therapy. Targeting DNA repair to promote the action of anti-cancer agents is therefore an attractive therapeutic strategy. BRCA2 is involved in homologous recombination repair. BRCA2 defects increase cancer risk but, paradoxically, cancer patients with BRCA2 mutations have better survival rates. We queried TCGA data and found that BRCA2 alterations led to increased survival in patients with ovarian and endometrial cancer. We developed a BRCA2-targeting second-generation antisense oligonucleotide (ASO), which …

Propranolol Therapy For Infantile Hemangioma Is Less Toxic But Longer In Duration Than Corticosteroid Therapy, Kathryn Sawa, Arjang Yazdani, Michael J. Rieder, Guido Filler

Paediatrics Publications

BACKGROUND: Infantile hemangioma is the most common benign, self-limiting tumour of childhood. Treatment is reserved for hemangiomas that obstruct vital structures or cause significant disfigurement. Traditionally, corticosteroids have been the medical treatment of choice. Since 2008, however, propranolol has been rapidly adopted as an effective pharmacological treatment for infantile hemangioma. Published data regarding the long-term side effects of propranolol are currently lacking. OBJECTIVE: To describe the long-term effects of propranolol and corticosteroids on anthropometric measurements (height, body mass index [BMI]) and blood pressure in children. METHODS: A prospective database analysis of all infantile hemangioma patient visits to the pediatric vascular …

Current research on concussion is primarily focused on injury identification and treatment. Prevention initiatives are, however, important for reducing the incidence of brain injury. This report examines the development and implementation of an interactive electronic teaching program (an e-module) that is designed specifically for concussion education within an adolescent population. This learning tool and the accompanying consolidation rubric demonstrate that significant engagement occurs in addition to the knowledge gained among participants when it is used in a school curriculum setting.

Epidemiology and Biostatistics Publications

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible visual impairment in the world affecting 60.5 million people worldwide in 2010, which is expected to increase to approximately 79.6 million by 2020. Therefore, glaucoma screening is important to detect, diagnose, and treat patients at the earlier stages to prevent disease progression and vision loss. Teleglaucoma uses stereoscopic digital imaging to take ocular images, which are transmitted electronically to an ocular specialist. The purpose is to synthesize literature to evaluate teleglaucoma, its diagnostic accuracy, healthcare system benefits, and cost-effectiveness.

METHODS: A systematic search was conducted to help locate published and unpublished studies. …

Cold Hardiness And Deacclimation Of Overwintering Papilio Zelicaon Pupae, Caroline M. Williams, Nicolai Annegret, Brent J. Sinclair, Laura V. Ferguson, Mark A. Bernards, Jessica J. Hellmann

Biology Publications

Seasonally-acquired cold tolerance can be reversed at warm temperatures, leaving temperate ectotherms vulnerable to cold snaps. However, deacclimation, and its underlying mechanisms, has not been well-explored in insects. Swallowtail butterflies are widely distributed but in some cases their range is limited by low temperature and their cold tolerance is seasonally acquired, implying that they experience mortality resulting from deacclimation. We investigated cold tolerance and hemolymph composition of Anise swallowtail (Papilio zelicaon) pupae during overwintering in the laboratory, and after four days exposure to warm temperatures in spring. Overwintering pupae had supercooling points around − 20.5 °C and survived …

MRI of hyperpolarized (129)Xe gas and (13)C-enriched substrates (e.g. pyruvate) presents an unprecedented opportunity to map anatomical, functional and metabolic changes associated with lung injury. In particular, inhaled hyperpolarized (129)Xe gas is exquisitely sensitive to changes in alveolar microanatomy and function accompanying lung inflammation through decreases in the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) of alveolar gas and increases in the transfer time (T(tr)) of xenon exchange from the gas and into the dissolved phase in the lung. Furthermore, metabolic changes associated with hypoxia arising from lung injury may be reflected by increases in lactate-to-pyruvate signal ratio obtained by magnetic resonance spectroscopic …

Vitamin D And White Matter Abnormalities In Older Adults: A Cross-Sectional Neuroimaging Study., C Annweiler, T Annweiler, R Bartha, F R Herrmann, R Camicioli, O Beauchet

Medical Biophysics Publications

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Morphological brain changes related to hypovitaminosis D have been poorly studied. In particular, the age-related decrease in vitamin D concentrations may explain the onset of white matter abnormalities (WMA) in older adults. Our objectives were (i) to investigate whether there was an association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) concentration and the grade of WMA in older adults and (ii) to determine whether the location of WMA was associated with 25OHD concentration.

METHODS: One hundred and thirty-three Caucasian older community-dwellers with no clinical hydrocephalus (mean 71.6 ± 5.6 years; 43.6% female) received a blood test and a magnetic …

Effects Of Performance-Based Pay, Social Recognition, And Training On Performance In Creative Problem Solving: An Experimental Investigation, Kun Huo

Business Publications

I investigate the effect of different incentive schemes on employees’ effort and performance in a creative problem-solving task because current literature is divided on the effect of performance-based incentives on creative performance. I conduct an experimental study comparing two types of performance-based incentives (piece-rate pay and fixed pay plus social recognition) with fixed pay alone and examine whether the use of creativity training can moderate the relationship between incentives and creative performance. By integrating theoretical predictions from both Bonner and Sprinkle’s (2002) incentive-effort-performance model and Amabile’s (1996) componential model of creative problem solving, I predict that the effect of performance-based …

Science As Storytelling, David A. Grandy, Barry R. Bickmore Dec 2014

Science As Storytelling, David A. Grandy, Barry R. Bickmore

BYU Studies

Much if our modern world revolves around something called "science." But what is science? Interestingly, this turns out to be a very difficult question to answer because every definition seems to include something we don't consider science or seems to exclude something we do consider science. In this essay, the authors present their own definition: Science is the modern art of creating stories that explain observations of the natural world and that could be useful for predicting, and possibly even controlling, nature. They then refine this definition by offering seven rules that scientific storytelling must follow to distinguish it …
