Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a non-lymphomatous, squamous-cell carcinoma that occurs in the epithelial lining of the nasopharynx. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma has a geographically well-defined distribution worldwide, with the highest prevalence in China, Southeast Asia, and Northern Africa. Symptoms of nascent NPC may be unapparent or trivial, with diagnosis based on the histopathology of biopsied tissue following endoscopy of the nasopharynx. The tumor node metastasis (TNM) staging system is the benchmark for the prognosis of NPC and guides treatment strategy. However, there is a consensus that the TNM system is not sufficiently specific for the prognosis of NPC, as it does not …

Prognostic Value Of Lymphocyte Vascular Density And E-Cadherin In Inflammatory Breast Cancer, Paul H. Levine, Heather J. Hoffman, Audra Macneil, Salman Hashmi, Sherry X. Yang, Stephen Hewitt, Kenneth L. Van Golen, Sandra M. Swain

Epidemiology Faculty Publications

Background: We recently evaluated four laboratory assays, vascular endothelial growth factor D (VEGF-D), E-cadherin, lymphatic vessel density (LVD) measured by podoplanin, and intra-lymphatic tumor emboli (ILTE), which showed notable differences between inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) and non-inflammatory locally advanced breast cancer (LABC). In this study we investigated the potential of the three most quantitatively measured markers, E-cadherin, LVD and VEGF-D, to predict survival in the IBC patients.

Materials and Methods: This study involved the 100 cases identified in the Inflammatory Breast Cancer Registry (IBCR) whose tumors were previously evaluated for the four assays noted above. Living patients were recontacted and …

Empirical Assessment Of Risk Factors: How Online And Offline Lifestyle, Social Learning, And Social Networking Sites Influence Crime Victimization, Ashley Bettencourt

Master’s Theses and Projects

As technology and social media become more intertwined with our everyday lives, people are more exposed to various types of victimizations. The purpose of this study is to examine how our online and offline lifestyle choices can contribute to our risk of becoming a sexual crime victim. A random sample of college students from a Massachusetts college was used to gather the necessary information. This survey data was analyzed based on major theoretical components derived from the lifestyle exposure and social learning perspectives. This study determined that both online and offline lifestyle and social learning theory have a substantial impact …

Vol. 6 No. 1, Fall 2014; Protecting The Sanctity Of Family: An Argument For The Equitable Parent Doctrine, Kelli Schmidt Dec 2014

Vol. 6 No. 1, Fall 2014; Protecting The Sanctity Of Family: An Argument For The Equitable Parent Doctrine, Kelli Schmidt

Northern Illinois Law Review Supplement

This Comment examines the rights of men who held themselves out as a child's father or who did not know they were the biological father with a focus on the equitable parent doctrine. Because the equitable parent doctrine has not been adopted in Illinois, the author proposes new legislation. The proposed legislation establishes factors to assist a court in determining when a man should be granted rights to a child with respect to two different scenarios: first, if he held himself out as the child's father, but ultimately found out he was not the biological father, or second, if the …

The Curious Incident Of The Supreme Court In Myriad Genetics, Dan L. Burk Dec 2014

The Curious Incident Of The Supreme Court In Myriad Genetics, Dan L. Burk

Notre Dame Law Review

Often what is not said is as significant as what is said. In its recent Myriad Genetics decision, the United States Supreme Court is curiously silent about the relationship between its holding in that case and the holding in its immediately previous patent subject matter case, Mayo v. Prometheus. This reticence is all the more puzzling given that the Court initially remanded Myriad to the lower courts for reconsideration in light of the Mayo holding. The Court’s silence regarding Mayo leaves uncertain the relationship between the “products of nature” doctrine that serves as the basis for the Myriad decision, and …

Respecting Legislators And Rejecting Baselines: Rebalancing Casey, Paul C. Quast Dec 2014

Respecting Legislators And Rejecting Baselines: Rebalancing Casey, Paul C. Quast

Notre Dame Law Review

Part I of this Note describes the background cases leading to the Supreme Court’s decision in Casey and the resulting undue burden standard. This Part also explains the limited circumstances in which the undue burden standard gives more definitive guidelines for judicial decisionmaking. Part II works through several federal district and appellate court cases to identify some of the underlying baseline presumptions and normative value judgments influencing judicial decisions in this area of the law. These baselines are often dispositive in determining whether a restriction on abortion is due or undue, cutting against the goodwill attempts by legislatures to make …

Is School Reform Working?, Geoff N. Masters Ao Dec 2014

Is School Reform Working?, Geoff N. Masters Ao

Policy Insights

Reforming schools and improving student achievement levels are priorities for governments around the world. In Australia over the past decade, State, Territory and Commonwealth governments put considerable effort into improving the quality and equity of school education. These initiatives included the various National Partnership Programs.

The results of international surveys show that, despite reform efforts, there was little improvement in the performances of Australian students over the past decade. The period 2000 to 2012 saw a significant decline in the reading and mathematical literacy levels of Australian 15-year-olds as measured by PISA, and results from TIMSS confirmed a general lack …

Exploring The Attitudes, Knowledge, And Receptivity Of Community-Working Pharmacists Regarding Two Over-The-Counter Medications (Otcs), Robin Spielmann, John Redwanski

Pharmacy Practice Faculty Posters

Many patients go without access to contemporary or traditional Western medicine due to lack of quality health insurance. Thus, more patients are turning to other less expensive, alternative forms of treatment. Our analysis of several different community-pharmacies in Maine, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky showed that many practicing pharmacists know little about these types of alternative therapies, and make little effort answering questions and/or making a safe recommendation about these products. Two OTCs were chosen with purpose: Calcium with Vitamin D and Grape Seed Extract. A convenience sample of pharmacies and pharmacists were selected based on travel time and location. Pharmacists …

Generational Inversions: 'Working' For Social Reproduction Amid Hiv In Swaziland, Casey Golomski Dec 2014

Generational Inversions: 'Working' For Social Reproduction Amid Hiv In Swaziland, Casey Golomski

Anthropology

How do people envision social reproduction when regular modes of generational succession and continuity are disrupted in the context of HIV/AIDS? How and where can scholars identify local ideas for restoring intergenerational practices of obligation and dependency that produce mutuality rather than conflict across age groups? Expanding from studies of HIV/AIDS and religion in Africa, this article pushes for an analytic engagement with ritual as a space and mode of action to both situate local concerns about and practices for restoring dynamics of social reproduction. It describes how the enduring HIV/AIDS epidemic in Swaziland contoured age patterns of mortality where …

Circadian Rhythms Of Crawling And Swimming In The Nudibranch Mollusc Melibe Leonina, Winsor H. Watson Iii, James M. Newcomb, Lauren E. Kirouac, Amanda A. Naimie Dec 2014

Circadian Rhythms Of Crawling And Swimming In The Nudibranch Mollusc Melibe Leonina, Winsor H. Watson Iii, James M. Newcomb, Lauren E. Kirouac, Amanda A. Naimie

Jackson Estuarine Laboratory

Daily rhythms of activity driven by circadian clocks are expressed by many organisms, including molluscs. We initiated this study, with the nudibranch Melibe leonina, with four goals in mind: (1) determine which behaviors are expressed with a daily rhythm; (2) investigate which of these rhythmic behaviors are controlled by a circadian clock; (3) determine if a circadian clock is associated with the eyes or optic ganglia of Melibe, as it is in several other gastropods; and (4) test the hypothesis that Melibe can use extraocular photoreceptors to synchronize its daily rhythms to natural light-dark cycles. To address these goals, we …

A Systematic Review Of Effective Youth Prevention Education: Implications For Internet Safety Education., Lisa M. Jones, Kimberly J. Mitchell, Wendy A. Walsh

Crimes Against Children Research Center

ABSTRACT: Over the past two decades, a wide array of internet safety education materials and programs have developed to increase positive youth behavior and safety online. Although it is a new area of prevention, programs should incorporate practices that prior prevention evaluation studies tell us work best. To inform internet safety education, 31 youth prevention education meta-analyses across a wide range of youth prevention (substance abuse, risky sex behavior, delinquency, etc.) were coded to identify prevention program characteristics shown by research to be most effective. The review identified that active, skill-based lessons, focused on research based causal and risk factors, …

A Content Analysis Of Youth Internet Safety Programs: Are Effective Prevention Strategies Being Used?, Lisa M. Jones, Kimberly J. Mitchell, Wendy A. Walsh Dec 2014

A Content Analysis Of Youth Internet Safety Programs: Are Effective Prevention Strategies Being Used?, Lisa M. Jones, Kimberly J. Mitchell, Wendy A. Walsh

Crimes Against Children Research Center

ABSTRACT: Almost half of youth in the U.S. report receiving internet safety education (ISE) in their schools. Unfortunately, we know little about what educational messages make a difference in problems such as cyberbullying, sexting, or online predators. To consider directions for improving effectiveness, a content analysis was conducted on materials from four ISE programs. Results indicate that ISE programs are mostly not incorporating proven educational strategies. Common ISE messages have proliferated without a clear rationale for why they would be effective. It is recommended that program developers and other stakeholders reconsider ISE messages, improve educational strategies, and participate in evaluation. …

Doorways To Divinity And Function In The Form: Icons And Ecclesiastical Enforcement, Ana Schnellmann Dec 2014

Doorways To Divinity And Function In The Form: Icons And Ecclesiastical Enforcement, Ana Schnellmann

Student Scholarship

It is always fascinating to explore the development of cultures and cultural art and to see how one evolves from and into the next. In classical antiquity, the veneration of the cult statue was common; the cult statue occupied a niche in the temple to which only priests and guests of the priests had direct access. The statues were not simply symbolic· they were instead holy objects, manifesting a direct path the the cult deity they depicted. The image itself, in other words, was the authority; the image itself had power. The forms and authority of the cult deities and …

Protein-Coated Nanoparticles Are Internalized By The Epithelial Cells Of The Female Reproductive Tract And Induce Systemic And Mucosal Immune Responses, Savannah E Howe, Vjollca Konjufca Dec 2014

Protein-Coated Nanoparticles Are Internalized By The Epithelial Cells Of The Female Reproductive Tract And Induce Systemic And Mucosal Immune Responses, Savannah E Howe, Vjollca Konjufca

Publications

The female reproductive tract (FRT) includes the oviducts (fallopian tubes), uterus, cervix and vagina. A layer of columnar epithelium separates the endocervix and uterus from the outside environment, while the vagina is lined with stratified squamous epithelium. The mucosa of the FRT is exposed to antigens originating from microflora, and occasionally from infectious microorganisms. Whether epithelial cells (ECs) of the FRT take up (sample) the lumen antigens is not known. To address this question, we examined the uptake of 20-40 nm nanoparticles (NPs) applied vaginally to mice which were not treated with hormones, epithelial disruptors, or adjuvants. We found that …
