Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Violence against women is a social problem that demands much attention from society because it is a human rights issue and is damaging to the mental health status of women. The purpose of this investigation is to use an ethnographic approach to analyze the perceptions of women who have suffered from domestic violence to determine how perceptions of domestic violence impact subsequent mental health outcomes. Women (n=6) were recruited from the NGO Amhauta, an educational program that advocates for the rights of women and children in San Jerónimo, a district of Cusco, Peru. This analysis uses an ethnographic approach to …

The Case For An International Court Of Civil Justice, Maya Steinitz Dec 2014

The Case For An International Court Of Civil Justice, Maya Steinitz

Faculty Scholarship

We live in a world in which the victims of cross-border mass torts de facto (not de jure) have no court to turn to in order to pursue legal action against American multinational corporations when they are responsible for disasters. 1 The only way to provide a fair and legitimate process for both victims and corporations is to create an International Court of Civil Justice (ICCJ). This Essay seeks to start a conversation about this novel institutional solution. It lays out both a justice case, from the plaintiffs' viewpoint, and an efficiency case, from a corporate defendant's viewpoint, for why …

Impact Of Engineering Ambassador Programs On Student Development, Thalia Anagnos, Alicia Lyman-Holt, Claudia Marin-Artieda, Ellen Momsen

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

This study highlights the positive impact of participation in an engineering ambassador program on students from two universities: Oregon State University which is a large public university in a college town with a 13% minority student body, and Howard University, a medium sized private university with a relatively small engineering program in an urban setting enrolling a primarily minority population. Although these ambassador programs have a major goal of service to the university and engineering program, they serve an equally important goal of developing the skills and attitudes of the ambassadors themselves. Ambassadors from both universities were surveyed, and though …

The Trouble With Tourism, Steven J. Hollenhorst, Susan Houge Mackenzie, David M. Ostergren Dec 2014

The Trouble With Tourism, Steven J. Hollenhorst, Susan Houge Mackenzie, David M. Ostergren

Recreation, Parks and Tourism Administration

The hegemonic view of tourism is as a global panacea for struggling peoples, environments and economies (Smith and Brent 2001). This article begins by arguing that increasing worldwide risks from human-induced climate change fundamentally alter the veracity of this prediction claim. As one of the world’s largest industries, tourism is also one of the largest emitters of carbon, primarily from air transport. Far from standing apart from our carbon-dependent economy, tourism is quite profoundly a creation of that economy and cannot be an antidote to the very stuff of which it is made. Further, to the extent that tourism functions …

The Effect Of Tea And Its Constituent L-Theanine On Anxiety: A Review Of The Literature, Christine Gilbert Dec 2014

The Effect Of Tea And Its Constituent L-Theanine On Anxiety: A Review Of The Literature, Christine Gilbert

Food Science and Nutrition

Mental health disorders are a universal issue and affect millions of individuals every day. Anxiety is the most common type of mental disorder, affecting social, physical, and cognitive health. Although clinicians usually suggest prescriptive medications, they carry side effects, are expensive, and only acutely alleviate symptoms. As a result, recent interest has been directed towards nonconventional dietary therapies, including tea and its constituent L-theanine, for anxiolytic effects. Tea is the most prevalent beverage consumed after water; it is historically and globally accepted. The purpose of this literature review is to explore whether tea and its constituent L-theanine carry anxiolytic effects. …

Common Vitis Vinifera Mite Pests (Tetranychus Pacificus And Eotetranychus Willamettei) Reaction To Fungicides And Water Stress On Chardonnay, Christina Perry Dec 2014

Common Vitis Vinifera Mite Pests (Tetranychus Pacificus And Eotetranychus Willamettei) Reaction To Fungicides And Water Stress On Chardonnay, Christina Perry

Wine and Viticulture

In this study, we hoped to record Pacific spider mite (Tetranychus pacificus) and Willamette spider mite (Eotetranychus willamettei) survival, development, reproduction, and longevity in the presence of various fungicides and on water stressed Chardonnay (Vitis vinifera) cuttings. It has been observed in the San Joaquin Valley that Pacific mite populations drastically increase under warm dry conditions (Hanna et al., 1997a), although it has never been explained exactly why. Water stressed grapevines may elicit responses in the plant that effect mite reproduction or longevity, or there may be a physiological or behavioral response from the spider mites under these conditions. While …

Agricultural Experiences And Factors Of Undergraduates Who Enroll In A College Of Agriculture, Benjamin G. Swan, Ann M. De Lay

Agricultural Education and Communication

Industry partners and College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences (CAFES) faculty have observed students entering the college possessed fewer agriculture experiences and skills than their predecessors. They have also lamented the increasing pressure to develop industry-ready students, when the gaps are ever wider between their experience and skills entering college and what are required upon graduation. During the 2011 spring quarter, all CAFES students (N = 3,366) were sent an electronic survey that resulted in 911 responses (27% response rate). Three quarters of the students were female and one third were seniors. Prior to enrolling at the university, 34% …

Re:Find Distillery, Ronald Cain, Kasey Urman, Taylor Frias

Case Studies in Agribusiness

When Alex and Monica Villicana started their winery in 2002, they had no intention of starting a distillery. But in order to have the right ratio of skins to juice they had to bleed off and dispose juice. Trying to find a use for the excess juice, they distilled it into vodka and gin. Much to their surprise, they quickly sold out. The case discusses licensing and technical issues of starting a distrillery.

Client Science: Bad News And The Fully Informed Adr Client, Marjorie Corman Aaron

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

Professor Aaron comments that this piece, excerpted from: “Bad News and the Fully Informed Client,” the first chapter of her book, Client Science, addresses the lawyer’s challenge when counseling clients where “bad” news— negative, pessimistic or unwelcome developments or analysis—must be conveyed, whether or not within an ADR process. “As a mediator of civil cases, I suspect that mediation involves a higher than average percentage of cases involving ill-counseled clients or ‘difficult clients’ who may fairly be characterized as ‘counseling-resistant’ despite the best efforts of skilled lawyers. When the lawyer explains ‘bad news’ about case developments or likely outcomes, he …

Magic Surfaces, Brandi Crystal Moore Dec 2014

Magic Surfaces, Brandi Crystal Moore

Mathematics Undergraduate Theses

Magic figures are discrete, two-dimensional (2-D) objects. We translated the definitions of magic squares and magic circles in an attempt to find three-dimensional (3-D) surfaces that adhere to the same definitions. This is what we defined as a magic surface.

First, we translated these definitions by thinking of the discrete integer entries in the magic squares and magic circles as volumes under the magic surfaces; these were evaluated by volume integrals. We then translated these definitions in a similar way to apply line integral constraints.

We found polynomial functions that satisfied thse re-definitions of conditions for a magic surface. In …

Landscape fires show large variability in the amount of biomass or fuel consumed per unit area burned. Fuel consumption (FC) depends on the biomass available to burn and the fraction of the biomass that is actually combusted, and can be combined with estimates of area burned to assess emissions. While burned area can be detected from space and estimates are becoming more reliable due to improved algorithms and sensors, FC is usually modeled or taken selectively from the literature. We compiled the peer-reviewed literature on FC for various biomes and fuel categories to understand FC and its variability better, and …

Leading A Mock Trading Floor: Active-Based Learning In A Business Context, Heather Knewtson

College of Business Publications

A master teaching approach was used during a session of introductory finance to provide high impact teaching practices for a large class of 190 freshman business students. To teach financial markets, an active-based learning activity was used, and the students participated in a simulated New York Stock Exchange trading floor. Using volunteers as market specialists, students traded fictional shares and submitted a portfolio assignment after the trading session. Active-based learning generated excitement toward meaningful student engagement about financial markets.
