Zeros Of Modular Forms And Quantum Unique Ergodicity, Steve Lester
Zeros Of Modular Forms And Quantum Unique Ergodicity, Steve Lester
Algebra/Number Theory Seminar
Modular forms appear prominently in number theory and also come into play in other areas of mathematics as well as physics. In this talk I will mention some basic properties of modular forms and describe the distribution of their zeros. In particular, I will discuss how Quantum Unique Ergodicity for Hecke cusp forms is related to the equidistribution of their zeros. This talk will assume no previous knowledge of the subject and should be accessible to graduate students with some background in analysis.

Motor Control: Theory And Practical Application For The Youth Basketball Coach, Lucas R. Deckard
Motor Control: Theory And Practical Application For The Youth Basketball Coach, Lucas R. Deckard
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
BACKGROUND: Motor control, learning, and development need to be considered by any coach working with youth athletes. When coaches fail to consider these areas, they may be more likely to create practice plans, which omit the innate physiological and psychological differences between youth and adult participants, lessen the development of sport-specific skills, and may create less enjoyable sporting experiences for young players. PURPOSE: The aims of this literature review were to explore recent scientific literature linking motor behavior/development to application in youth basketball, identify major themes, and summarize these concepts in a manner useful to coaches in this environment. METHODS: …
Intergenerational Service-Learning With Exercise Science Students, Mckinze R. Vowels
Intergenerational Service-Learning With Exercise Science Students, Mckinze R. Vowels
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Exercise science professionals often work with older adults to help maintain function and independence. Ageism may begin during undergraduate training, as most have not interacted with older adults. Intergenerational service-learning (ISL) may be a useful pedagogy to facilitate interactions with older adults. PURPOSE: To determine if exercise science students’ knowledge of older adults and ageism are significantly improved by incorporating ISL into an exercise science course. METHODS: Students (n =10) enrolled in Exercise and Aging and from two additional exercise science courses (n = 17) completed pre and post assessments of attitudes towards and knowledge of older adults. Students implemented …
Viral Hollywood: How Social Media & Other Emerging Technologies Have Molded The Modern Moviegoing Landscape, Benjamin P. Conniff
Viral Hollywood: How Social Media & Other Emerging Technologies Have Molded The Modern Moviegoing Landscape, Benjamin P. Conniff
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
There’s no denying that the rise of the internet has brought about change in the Hollywood landscape. Fans now use social media, like Facebook and Twitter, to share word-of-mouth about movies both good and bad. In a sense, anyone can use these new “spreadable media” to be a critic. I myself took it one step further and started my own film review blog. I was even published in the College Heights Herald student newspaper for over a year! In gauging my audience’s tastes in social media usage and in film, I have uncovered the fact that the hot-button marketing issues …
An Assessment Of What Factors Affect The Average Number Of Caries Seen Per Visit Among Children Visiting A Mobile Dental Unit In South Central Kentucky, Breion Douglas
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Background: Dental caries is the single most common chronic childhood disease in Kentucky affecting 20% of preschoolers, 50% of second graders, and 75% of 15 year olds. Dental caries, also known as tooth decay, occurs when bacteria from salivary glands produce an acid to breakdown food. If this acid is not cleaned off the teeth, it can destroy the tooth enamel. Dental problems can be linked to the inability to pay for dental care (i.e. insurance), limited access to dental providers, and parental inability to take their children to dentists. To help address the issue with tooth decay seen among …

Don't You Dare Dumb It Down: Supporting High Expectations In Inclusive Classrooms, Whitney Rapp, Katrina Arndt, Susan Hildenbrand, Susan Schultz
Don't You Dare Dumb It Down: Supporting High Expectations In Inclusive Classrooms, Whitney Rapp, Katrina Arndt, Susan Hildenbrand, Susan Schultz
Education Faculty/Staff Publications
In successful inclusive classrooms, all students, including those with disability labels, are provided with high expectations as well as equitable supports to strive for those expectations. This session describes the theoretical foundation needed to realize successful inclusion for all students and the danger of lowering expectations or limiting supports. Exemplary lessons that respond to the needs of all students in an inclusive setting are shared. At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to: 1. Identify that the theoretical foundation that best facilitates successful inclusion in diverse classrooms is a combination of high expectations and supports that are …
Barriers To Effective Implementation Of Programs For The Prevention Of Workplace Violence In Hospitals, James Blando, Marilyn Ridenour, Daniel Hartley, Carri Casteel
Barriers To Effective Implementation Of Programs For The Prevention Of Workplace Violence In Hospitals, James Blando, Marilyn Ridenour, Daniel Hartley, Carri Casteel
Community & Environmental Health Faculty Publications
Effective workplace violence (WPV) prevention programs are essential, yet challenging to implement in healthcare. The aim of this study was to identify major barriers to implementation of effective violence prevention programs. After reviewing the related literature, the authors describe their research methods and analysis and report the following seven themes as major barriers to effective implementation of workplace violence programs: a lack of action despite reporting; varying perceptions of violence; bullying; profit-driven management models; lack of management accountability; a focus on customer service; and weak social service and law enforcement approaches to mentally ill patients. The authors discuss their findings …

Sampling Strategies For Frequency Spectrum-Based Population Genomic Inference, John D. Robinson, Alec J. Coffman, Michael J. Hickerson, Ryan N. Gutenkunst
Sampling Strategies For Frequency Spectrum-Based Population Genomic Inference, John D. Robinson, Alec J. Coffman, Michael J. Hickerson, Ryan N. Gutenkunst
Publications and Research
Background The allele frequency spectrum (AFS) consists of counts of the number of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) loci with derived variants present at each given frequency in a sample. Multiple approaches have recently been developed for parameter estimation and calculation of model likelihoods based on the joint AFS from two or more populations. We conducted a simulation study of one of these approaches, implemented in the Python module δaδi, to compare parameter estimation and model selection accuracy given different sample sizes under one- and two-population models. Results Our simulations included a variety of demographic models and two parameterizations that differed …
