Small School, Big Reach: Open Access Outreach On A Liberal Arts College Campus, Janelle L. Wertzberger
All Musselman Library Staff Works
The liberal arts college environment provides opportunities for campus-wide engagement of open access issues that may differ from those at larger institutions. Because we support fewer campus authors, we are able to provide a high level of service. Librarians’ close connections with faculty and students allow us to move beyond articles and theses and solicit a wide range of scholarly and creative works to share in our repository. In addition, we’ve fostered conversations about open access, open textbooks, altmetrics, and copyright among faculty, staff, and students. This poster will present a snapshot of a variety of outreach and education strategies …

The New York Times Features Opinion Piece Written By Gardner-Webb Professor, Office Of University Communications
Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive
The world-renowned newspaper publication The New York Times has selected the work of a Gardner-Webb University history professor to appear in its online opinion/editorial section, which features commentary from a variety of authors on the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. GWU Assistant Professor of History Dr. Joseph Moore says recent research he completed relating to the history of Scottish Covenanters, Christianity, and early-American politics led him to pitch an idea to editors at The New York Times. The thought became reality on Thursday, Dec. 4 when his article, “Lincoln, God and the Constitution,” was published online at NYTimes.com.

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
The goal of this Research Topic was to bring together diverse scientific perspectives on lateralized brain mechanisms underlying emotion, motivation, and memory. The Topic resulted in eight articles, three of which report original research and five of which review and synthesize past research with the aim of developing new hypotheses and theory. A range of international experts with diverse backgrounds, theoretical perspectives, and experimental methods contributed to the Topic. Contributions strongly reflect this diversity, ranging from examining pupil dilation in response to viewing Rembrandt portraits to understanding how caffeine supplementation influences levels of spatial processing. In all cases, the authors …

Massive Open Online Courses And Mission: A Qualitative Study Regarding Matching Mooc Opportunity With Mission Statement, Tara L. Waln-Lewellyn
Massive Open Online Courses And Mission: A Qualitative Study Regarding Matching Mooc Opportunity With Mission Statement, Tara L. Waln-Lewellyn
Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Since the first offering in 2008 (Fini, 2009; Liyanagunawardena, Adams & Williams, 2013), Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have been a phenomenon in higher education. While much research has been conducted on activities and experiences within these courses, little research from an administrative standpoint has been completed (Liyanagunawardena, et al., 2013). This qualitative case study examined the use of the mission statement in a committee’s determination whether or not to implement a MOOC at a Jesuit institution of higher education in the United States. Interviews were conducted with committee members, transcribed, and analyzed. Analysis determined that the mission statement did …

Teacher Perceptions Of Strategies And Practices That Motivate African American Adolescent Males With Individual Education Program To Read, Shawneice Tashae Malone
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The purpose of this study was to explore teachers' perceptions of African American males with an Individual Education Program (IEP), literacy motivations to assist teachers in augmenting students' self efficacy and literacy competence. The theoretical framework was derived from the expectancy theory of motivation which places emphasis on individual perceptions and the interactions that follow as a consequence of personal expectations. The researcher used a survey to determine which strategies teachers believe to be most motivational for high school African American males receiving a special education to read. The survey included 27 motivational strategies and practices acquired from previous studies …

Caveolin-1 (CAV1) is a vital scaffold protein heterogeneously expressed in both healthy and malignant tissue. We focus on the role of CAV1 when overexpressed in T-cell leukemia. Previously, we have shown that CAV1 is involved in cell-to-cell communication, cellular proliferation, and immune synapse formation; however, the molecular mechanisms have not been elucidated. We hypothesize that the role of CAV1 in immune synapse formation contributes to immune regulation during leukemic progression, thereby warranting studies of the role of CAV1 in CD4+ T-cells in relation to antigen-presenting cells. To address this need, we developed a computational model of a CD4+ …

Evaluating The Planning And Implementation Of Major Transit Capital Projects In The Portland Region, Joseph Recker
PSU Transportation Seminars
The Federal Transit Administration's (FTA) discretionary New Starts program is the federal government's largest discretionary funding program. From heavy to light rail, from commuter rail to bus rapid transit systems, the FTA's New Starts program has helped to make possible hundreds of new or extended transit fixed guideway systems across the country, including most of TriMet’s light rail extensions and WES commuter rail. Beginning in 2001, FTA has required project sponsors to prepare a Before and After Study report on the effectiveness of planning and implementation of New Starts and Small Starts projects. The studies focus on five transit characteristics …

‘Oh Man Of Learning! Victorian Public Education In Matters Legal, Ka Stevenson
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
Needing to Know the Law. With the unremitting expansion of legislation enacted during the nineteenth century together with the prolific development of the common law, the Victorians faced an explosion of legal initiatives that were continually altered and extended: ‘so many new jurisdictions and tribunals have been created during the reign of the present Sovereign’. It became apparent that there was a need for this new body of law to be published and disseminated to the widest possible audience. Ignorance of the law was no defence to a criminal charge and everyday transactions were increasingly regulated by a host of …
