Predictability Of Tropical Cyclone Intensity, Falko Judt Dec 2014

Predictability Of Tropical Cyclone Intensity, Falko Judt

Open Access Dissertations

The main goal of this work is to quantify the predictability of tropical cyclone (TC) intensity. Motivated by the lack of improvement in TC intensity prediction, a systematic study on the intrinsic predictability of TC intensity is conducted using a set of five high-resolution, cloud-resolving realistic model ensembles. The ensembles are generated with a stochastic kinetic-energy backscatter (SKEBS) method. Error growth is addressed by imposing stochastic perturbations with various spatial scales on the TC and its environment. The SKEBS ensembles feature convective-scale, mesoscale and synopticscale perturbations to better understand the growth of scale-dependent errors and their impact on TC uncertainty …

Effects Of Selected Commercial Diets And Yeast Substitution On The Growth And Associated Microbiota Of Rotifer (Brachionus Plicatilis), Ryan D. Lind Dec 2014

Effects Of Selected Commercial Diets And Yeast Substitution On The Growth And Associated Microbiota Of Rotifer (Brachionus Plicatilis), Ryan D. Lind

Open Access Theses

The rotifer (Brachionus plicatilis) is an essential feed organism for successful marine larviculture. Cost effective feeding regimes and the control of harmful bacteria are critical components of rotifer production. Supplementation of commercial diets with yeast can reduce costs, but its effects on bacteria such as Vibrio spp. are not well documented. Two experiments were conducted to identify a practical culture diet. The first experiment evaluates different commercial diets on rotifer growth and total Vibrio. The second experiment determines a practical level of yeast substitution, with regard to rotifer growth, culture Vibrio loads, and cost. The diets evaluated in the first …

Physical Therapy Management Of A Patient With A Transtibial Amputation Using An Over-Ground Body Weight Support System: A Case Report, Elizabeth Kelly

Case Report Posters

Background: Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD): Narrowing of the vessels secondary to atherosclerotic plaque buildup, results in ischemia to extremities which can lead to intermittent claudication, decreased distal pulses, impaired healing. Lower Extremity Amputation: 54% of amputations in the USA are due to PAD, either alone or in conjunction with diabetes (Kalapatapau V. et al), transtibial and transfemoral most common, best outcomes with multidisciplinary approach. Body Weight Support (BWS) Systems: Commonly used in patients after stroke or incomplete spinal cord injury; methods: treadmill or over-ground, over-ground allows for assistive device training and varying terrains; parameters: high-intensity, high-repetition, task-specific; lack of research …

Case Report Posters

Background: Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is one of the most common inherited neuromuscular disorders with a prevalence rate of 1 in 2,500 in the United States. CMT is a form of muscular dystrophy, and is an umbrella term for certain inherited genetic disorders that affect the peripheral nervous system. The genetic disorder is characterized by muscular wasting, weakness, and sensory loss, and is most severe in the distal lower extremities. Common symptoms include foot drop, high-stepped gait with frequent tripping or falls, foot deformities such as high arches and hammer toes, and loss of muscle bulk in the distal lower extremities. …

Outpatient Interventions For Femoral Acetabular Impingement Complicated By Hip Osteoarthritis, Labral Tear And L5 Sacralization: A Case Report, Brianna Palmer Dec 2014

Outpatient Interventions For Femoral Acetabular Impingement Complicated By Hip Osteoarthritis, Labral Tear And L5 Sacralization: A Case Report, Brianna Palmer

Case Report Posters

Background: Femoral Acetabular Impingement (FAI) is a known cause of hip pain in adolescents and young adults produced by altered hip joint mechanics. Types of FAI include Cam deformity, Pincer deformity or a combination. Abnormal abutment of the femoral head on the acetabular rim, especially during hip flexion and internal rotation (IR) causes a sharp, pinching pain in the groin and lateral hip. Chronic FAI can lead to hip osteoarthritis (OA) and labral and/or chondral defects. It is unknown if there is a correlation between FAI and sacralization.

Role Of Medio-Dorsal Frontal And Posterior Parietal Neurons During Auditory Detection Performance In Rats, Kaitlin S. Bohon, Michael C. Wiest Dec 2014

Role Of Medio-Dorsal Frontal And Posterior Parietal Neurons During Auditory Detection Performance In Rats, Kaitlin S. Bohon, Michael C. Wiest

Faculty Research and Scholarship

To further characterize the role of frontal and parietal cortices in rat cognition, we recorded action potentials simultaneously from multiple sites in the medio-dorsal frontal cortex and posterior parietal cortex of rats while they performed a two-choice auditory detection task. We quantified neural correlates of task performance, including response movements, perception of a target tone, and the differentiation between stimuli with distinct features (different pitches or durations). A minority of units—15% in frontal cortex, 23% in parietal cortex—significantly distinguished hit trials (successful detections, response movement to the right) from correct rejection trials (correct leftward response to the absence of the …

How Much Dna Is Lost? Measuring Dna Loss Of Str Length Fragments Targeted By The Powerplex 16® System Using The Qiagen Minelute Purification Kit, Brian M. Kemp, Misa Winters, Cara Monroe, Jodi Lynn Barta

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

The success in recovering genetic profiles from aged and degraded biological samples is diminished by fundamental aspects of DNA extraction, as well as its long-term preservation that are not well understood. While numerous studies have been conducted to determine whether one extraction method performed superior to others, nearly all of them were initiated with no knowledge of the actual starting DNA quantity in the samples prior to extraction, so they ultimately compared the outcome of all methods relative to the best. Using quantitative PCR (qPCR) to estimate the copy count of synthetic standards before (i.e., “copies in”) and after (i.e., …

A Conversation With D. Nurkse, Josh Brewer Dec 2014

A Conversation With D. Nurkse, Josh Brewer

Booth

Comfortably ensconced in a breakfast nook, poet D. Nurkse discussed the architecture of Butler’s Efromyson Center for Creative Writing (one way of talking about the relationship between labor and form), literary tradition, falling snow (visible through the window), and his parents leaving Europe as it disintegrated into World War II. We also discussed his use of baseball in poetry. Wizened and soft-spoken, he sipped coffee and reflected upon several decades of work. Nurkse’s career could have been different.

A Harvard graduate and son of an esteemed economist, he turned down an opportunity to pursue an international academic career. Instead, he …
