Subtropical Atlantic Climate Variability Record In Speleothems From The Bahamas, Monica Arienzo Dec 2014

Subtropical Atlantic Climate Variability Record In Speleothems From The Bahamas, Monica Arienzo

Open Access Dissertations

The last 100,000 years of climate consist of numerous abrupt millennial scale climate variations. Of interest to this study are Heinrich stadials which are extreme cold events in the North Atlantic. While a comprehensive picture of climate across Heinrich events is emerging for the North Atlantic, very few studies have been conducted in the subtropical western Atlantic, which may be important for the global propagation of these events. This study is the first study to determine paleoclimate of the Bahamas across Heinrich stadials. Cave deposits, in particular stalagmites, offer the opportunity to obtain high resolution records of past climate. Typically, …

Control Unit For An Opitcal Switch To Extend The Axial Range Of A Spectral-Domain Optical Coherence Tomography System, Carolina De Freitas

Open Access Theses

The goal of this thesis is to design and develop control electronics to integrate and synchronize a Spectral-Domain Optical Coherence Tomography (TD-OCT) system with an optical switch and an accommodation stimulus unit. The optical switch is implemented into the reference arm of the SD-OCT and is intended to change the length of the reference arm of the system after every frame-acquisition by a known distance. Combining consecutive frames into a single image can produce images with extended axial range while maintaining high axial and lateral resolution and high speed for in vivo imaging. The control unit also triggers a change …

Kháos For Percussion Solo And Quartet: A Journey Through And Inside The Five Grand Impermanences, Rodrigo Bussad Cesar Dec 2014

Kháos For Percussion Solo And Quartet: A Journey Through And Inside The Five Grand Impermanences, Rodrigo Bussad Cesar

Open Access Theses

KHÁOS is a large-scale percussion piece for solo percussion and quartet. It is divided into two grand parts that contain five movements in total. The impulse behind writing this piece is based on the seasonal cycle and its relations to the Book of Changes. From my earliest memories, my thoughts were directed towards the East. To this day I recall the overwhelming reaction I had when first introduced to the I Ching. Shortly thereafter, I was introduced to the concept of the active silence or Ma through the Music of Toru Takemitsu and his compositional journals. It was only natural …

The Effects Of Robot-Assisted Gait Training And Task-Specific Training On Adl Function And Mobility For A Patient After A Stroke: A Case Report, Maegen Johnson

Case Report Papers

Background and Purpose: Robot-assisted gait devices have become increasingly popular as they have been shown to increase the likeliness of independent ambulation in patients who have had a stroke, while also decreasing the physical burden on the physical therapist. However, there has been minimal research investigating the impact of these devices on activities of daily living (ADL) function. Therefore, the purpose of this case report is to describe the impact of robot-assisted gait training with task specific training on the ADL function and functional mobility of an individual who experienced a stroke. Case Description: The patient was a 71-year-old male …

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Increases in observed atmospheric concentrations of the long-lived greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O) have been well documented. However, information on event-related instantaneous emissions during fertilizer applications is lacking. With the development of fast-response N2O analyzers, the eddy covariance (EC) technique can be used to gather instantaneous measurements of N2O concentrations to quantify the exchange of nitrogen between the soil and atmosphere. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the performance of a new EC system, to measure the N2O flux with the system, and finally to examine relationships of the N2O flux with soil temperature, soil moisture, precipitation, and …

Water temperature is a primary physical factor regulating the persistence and distribution of aquatic taxa. Considering projected increases in air temperature and changes in precipitation in the coming century, accurate assessment of suitable thermal habitats in freshwater systems is critical for predicting aquatic species' responses to changes in climate and for guiding adaptation strategies. We use a hydrologic model coupled with a stream temperature model and downscaled general circulation model outputs to explore the spatially and temporally varying changes in stream temperature for the late 21st century at the subbasin and ecological province scale for the Columbia River basin (CRB). …

The Submissive, The Angel, And The Mad Woman In District 12: Feminine Identity In Suzanne Collins’S The Hunger Games, Kirstie E. Linstrom

English 502: Research Methods

The social roles women are given in literature are often debated by critics. This essay discusses the treatment and perceptions of female characters in Suzanne Collins’s The Hunger Games trilogy. Throughout the trilogy, the male characters shape the identities of the female characters through language and enforcing Western gender roles. Katniss, Prim, and their mother each fill different roles typically assigned to women. Katniss is a submissive female; Prim is the innocent angel in the household; and their mother portrays a mad woman that cannot cope with reality. These characters—Katniss in particular—are often misconstrued by audiences and critics. Katniss is …

Running Away To Neverland: The Fear Of Adulthood In John Green’S Paper Towns And J. M. Barrie’S Peter Pan, Teri Klauser

English 502: Research Methods

In examining John Green’s young adult novel, Paper Towns, and J. M. Barrie’s Peter Pan, a theme of fear towards adulthood and social obligation is explored in the characters, Margo Spiegelman and Peter Pan. This fear causes them both to run away to their own Neverland. In doing so, both characters are hindered from truly growing, as they settle into a frivolous and forgetful lifestyle. Using critics, such as Michael Egan, Sarah Gilead, and Karen Coats, I will examine Peter Pan as the immortal child, having taken on the identity of death and time, as well as Neverland as the …

English 502: Research Methods

My essay delves into J.K. Rowling's character of Hermione Granger. Hermione is a feminist character that seems to have been created with influence from Charles Perrault's "Cinderella" and J.M. Barrie's "Peter Pan". This essay details the similarities between Cinderella, Wendy Darling, and Hermione Granger, all while proving Rowling's feminist leaning when creating Hermione.

The Objectification Of Professional Female Athletes In Print Advertisements And The Consumers' Response, Angela L. Wallin

Sport Management Undergraduate

Abstract

As female athletes gain more recognition in the sports world, researchers continuously debate on whether the reason behind this is due to their athletic performance or their hyper sexualized appearance in media outlets such as print advertisements (Fink, Cunningham, & Kensicki, 2004). This raises the question on how consumers interpret advertisements that contain female athletes promoting both sport and non-sport products. Excited Delirium Syndrome And Conducted Electrical Weapons, Adam A. Nielsen Dec 2014

Excited Delirium Syndrome And Conducted Electrical Weapons, Adam A. Nielsen

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Excited delirium syndrome (ExDS) is defined as delirium coupled with extreme agitation (Vilke et al., 2012). ExDS is a bona fide medical condition that requires immediate medical attention, as 8% of patients will die from it. Some research only classifies ExDS as "true ExDS" if the subject dies; most research does not and this research does not wish to exclude the 92% of ExDS cases where the subject does not die. ExDS is well known because it oftentimes comes into play during and after a violent encounter with law enforcement. Because over 7,000 U.S. law enforcement agencies use TASER© brand …
