Gang Risk Factors And Academic Readiness In A Southern Middle School, James Martinez, Jeremy Tost, Shani Wilfred, Larry Hilgert
Georgia Educational Researcher
The current Georgia study examines middle-school-aged gang and non-gang members regarding the risk factors of gang membership and potential effects of these risk factors on academic achievement. Participants, 406 eighth grade students from a suburban middle-school, completed a 42-item survey assessing an array of demographic and risk factor variables. In addition, students provided self-report information regarding their success on national standardized testing used to measure academics readiness. Of the 28 variables analyzed, lower academic readiness was associated with ethnicity and/or gang membership. Findings are discussed in light of the complexity of the gang issue and the importance of recognizing the …

Using ten FIB UI English students as the sample, five males and five females, this research aims to prove Lakoff’s theory whether it is suitable with the condition of FIB UI English students or not. The Tragicomedy Of The Commons, Brigham Daniels
The Tragicomedy Of The Commons, Brigham Daniels
BYU Law Review
Scholarship on the commons focuses on a diverse set of problems, ranging from crashing fisheries to crowded court dockets. Because we find commons resources throughout our natural and cultural environments, understanding old lessons and learning new ones about the commons gives us leverage to address a wide range of problems. Because the list of resources identified as commons resources continues to grow, the importance of gleaning lessons about the commons will also continue to grow.
That being said, while the resources that make up the commons are certainly diverse, so too are the ways scholars depict it and the challenges …

Canon Formation In The Study Of The Environment In China And Taiwan, Peter I-Min Huang
Canon Formation In The Study Of The Environment In China And Taiwan, Peter I-Min Huang
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Canon Formation in the Study of the Environment in China and Taiwan" Peter I-min Huang discusses how the canon of ecocriticism taught in English studies in China and Taiwan is becoming increasingly of a local perspective by scholars who publish in Mandarin, address environmental issues specific to Mainland China and Taiwan, and thus engage with ecocriticism based on local perspectives rather than Western ones. The study and teaching of English-language literature in China and Taiwan inevitably encounters charges of neocolonialism or other argumentation that it is being used in ways that betray the legacy of past colonialist …

Enhancing Child Care For Children With Special Needs Through Technical Assistance, Cyleste C. Collins, Robert L. Fischer, Nina Lalich
Faculty Scholarship
Children with special needs often require additional supports in child care settings. The provision of technical assistance (TA) and consultation to child care teachers is an established method for addressing this need. This study expands on existing research by bringing the perspective of different adults (parents, technical assistance consultants, teachers, and child care center directors) together to better understand the experiences of all parties involved in TA cases for children between the ages of three and five. The concerns most frequently leading to the consultation were social-emotional-behavioral (50.5%), developmental (32.3%), medical (28.3%), and environmental risk (14%), and one quarter of …

Teaching Culture In Textbooks For Spanish For Business Published In Spain, Maida Watson
Global Business Languages
During the last two decades, studies of how the teaching of culture is related to second language learning have grown enormously. At the same time an interest in Languages for Specific Purposes in both Europe and the USA has resulted in a study of how business languages are taught. But few people have examined how texts published in different countries to teach business languages present different facets of the target culture. The purpose of this article is to study how texts for Spanish for Business published in Spain during the last three decades have taught culture. These texts reflect a …
