Memory On Trial: The Manhunt For Alaska's Most Elusive Mass Murderer, Brittany A. Retherford

The fallibility and malleability of human memory played a confounding and troublesome role in the investigation of the 1982 murder of eight people on a fishing boat, the Investor, in Craig, Alaska, and subsequent trials of law enforcements' only suspect, John Kenneth Peel. Human memory -- including its inherent subjectivity and susceptibility to coercion and change -- ultimately resulted in an unsatisfactory resolution for victims' families and friends, law enforcement, witnesses, and others associated with the events, investigation and legal proceedings. Alaska Native populations have undergone relatively rapid changes in nearly every aspect of life over the past half century. Overall lifestyles have shifted from subsistence-based to wage-based, from traditional to Western, and from self-sustainability to reliance on Outside sources. My research investigates the effects of these changes on health and well-being. The literature appears to lack concern for and documentation of Native peoples' perceptions of the changes in food systems and effects on their communities. The goals of this dissertation were (i) to experimentally investigate the fluid dynamic and heat transfer performance of nanofluids in a circular tube, (ii) to study the influence of temperature and particle volumetric concentration of nanofluids on thermophysical properties, heat transfer and pumping power, (iii) to measure the rheological properties of various nanofluids and (iv) to investigate using a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) technique the performance of nanofluids in the flat tube of a radiator. In this dissertation, interdisciplinary research methods were used to examine how changes in hydrology associated with climate affect Alaskans. Partnerships were established with residents of Fairbanks and Tanana to develop scientific investigations relevant to rural Alaskans. In chapter 2, local knowledge was incorporated into scientific models to identify a socialecological threshold used to model potential driftwood harvest from the Yukon River. Anecdotal evidence and subsistence calendar records were combined with scientific data to model the harvest rates of driftwood. Modeling results estimate that between 1980 and 2010 hydrologic factors alone were responsible for a 29% decrease in the annual wood …

The Triassic Shublik Formation of the Alaska North Slope is a world-class resource rock and has been identified as the major source of many of the conventional hydrocarbon accumulations on the North Slope, including Prudhoe Bay. Recent interest in the Shublik as a potential shale resource play has highlighted the need for robust hydraulic fracture modeling and simulation of the interval, but little geologic information is available because of the remote nature of the region and the complex character of the Shublik. In regions impacted by permafrost, discontinuities are areas of possible connection between the supra- and sub-permafrost portions of an aquifer. Permafrost discontinuities influence the transport of contaminants in an aquifer, necessitating delineation of these discontinuities and their influence on groundwater flow. Means of identifying the locations of permafrost discontinuities have previously been limited to geophysical methods and the evaluation of well logs. In this study we use groundwater elevation trends and environmental tracers (e.g., stable isotopes and temperature) to evaluate the dynamics in a sulfolane-contaminated aquifer located in a region of discontinuous permafrost in the Interior of Alaska. The purpose of this research work was to study the beneficiation of rare earth ore of the Bokan Mountain -- Dotson Ridge deposit, located near Ketchikan, Alaska. Rare earth element (REE) composite ore samples from the Bokan Mountain -- Dotson Ridge deposit were tested using gravity concentration, magnetic separation, flotation, and leaching techniques to separate the REE. The composite ore sample was a product of a preliminary x-ray sorting process. Qualitative electron microprobe analysis of the ore showed that most of the REE minerals in the ore were silicate minerals. Since the electron microprobe analysis samples were coated with carbon …

West Sak is a multi-billion barrel viscous oil accumulation on the North Slope of Alaska. The unique geologic complexities and fluid properties of the West Sak reservoir make understanding ultimate sweep efficiency under waterflood a challenge. This project uses uncertainty modeling to evaluate the ultimate sweep efficiency in the West Sak reservoir and honors a rich dataset gathered from 30 years of development history. A sector model encompassing the area of the West Sak commercial pilot was developed and a sensitivity analysis conducted to determine the most important parameters affecting sweep efficiency. Shrubs have been expanding in the Arctic over the past century, with important consequences for ecosystem functioning, plant community composition, and wildlife habitat. Herbivores have the capacity to strongly moderate the growth and biomass of shrubs, and therefore need to be considered when attempting to understand and project future changes to Arctic ecosystems. Ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus, L. muta) are common and widespread in many tundra regions, and feed on shrubs throughout their life cycle. Permafrost thaw in boreal peatlands causes an ecosystem state change as black spruce forests with permafrost transition into saturated, non-forested collapse scar bogs or fens. Previous studies have suggested that permafrost thaw can increase soil nitrogen (N) bioavailability. However, it is unclear whether these changes in N availability are directly related to changes in N pools or mineralization rates in surface soils (active layer dynamics), or whether increasing N can be attributed to N mobilization from thawing permafrost soil organic matter at depth. Blood parasites can limit the productivity of birds and increase the vulnerability of isolated and naïve populations to extinction. I examined 804 blood samples collected from 11 species of South American waterfowl to assess infection by Haemoproteus, Plasmodium and/or Leucocytozoon parasites. In addition, I strove to develop a new molecular tool to quickly and accurately determine relative parasitemia rates of Leucocytozoon parasites in avian blood. I used samples collected from waterfowl in interior Alaska (n = 105) to develop and optimize a real-time, quantitative PCR methodology using TaqMan fluorogenic probes. Arctic caribou and reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) are an economically and ecologically important species. Rangifer populations are often affected by nutritional factors. Our ability to monitor nutrient supply to arctic ungulates is presently limited by a lack of techniques to consistently and easily measure availability of specific nutrients and which may disproportionately affect different segments of Rangifer populations. I refined and validated a method to measure availability of specific nutrients including nitrogen (N) and energy to caribou using purified fibrolytic enzymes and acid/pepsin to simulate digestion. Arctic tundra and boreal forest have accumulated a vast pool of organic carbon, twice as large as the atmospheric carbon pool and three times as large as the carbon contained by all living things. As the permafrost region warms, more of this carbon will be exposed to decomposition, combustion, and hydrologic export. This permafrost carbon feedback has been described as the largest terrestrial feedback to climate change as well as one of the most likely to occur; however, estimates of its strength vary by a factor of thirty. Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

A recent review of pre-qualifying interprofessional education in the UK reported the practical challenges of synchronising interprofessional education1. Whilst it was noted that online interprofessional courses were developed primarily to overcome timetabling conflicts of students and clinicians from various health professions, it was recognised that a blended learning approach with appropriate student support could enable an effective interprofessional education experience with lower running costs and reduced disruption. It was found, however, that despite the ubiquity of e-learning in interprofessional education there seemed to be less sharing than expected1.
