My thesis is composed of three elements: 3D modeling, web design, and heritage visualization. My goal is to use computer graphics design to inform and create an interest in historical visualization by rebuilding Fort Frontenac using 3D modeling and interactive design. The final model will be integrated into an interactive website to learn more about the fort's historic importance. It is apparent that using computer graphics can save time and money when it comes to historical visualization. Visitors do not have to travel to the actual archaeological buildings. Interdisciplinary sustainability science teamwork skills are essential for addressing the world’s most pressing and complex sustainability problems, which inherently have social, natural, and engineering science dimensions. Further, because sustainability science problems exist at global scales, interdisciplinary science teams will need to consist of international members who communicate and work together effectively. Students trained in international interdisciplinary science skills will be able to hit the ground running when they obtain jobs requiring them to tackle sustainability problems. Active tectonic settings exhibit deformation manifested by earthquakes and by strong topographic variations due to erosion and uplift. Seismic waves from these earthquakes will clearly be influenced by the topographic variations, but it is challenging to isolate the effects of topography from the effects of variations in 3D seismic wave-speed structure. Here we design a realistic numerical experiment to investigate the effects of topography on the regional seismic wavefield. We choose southern California as a target region. We perform several sets of 3D seismic wavefield simulations for 137 earthquake sources ranging from Mw3.4 to 5.4. We test the influence of …

This study examined interpersonal and social values conflict among motorized and non-motorized recreational river users within the Chena River State Recreation Area in interior Alaska. This work was undertaken in order to evaluate differences in research methodologies and to provide state park managers with information concerning the type and level of conflict among recreational rivers users and potential management strategies. Previous methodologies for operationalizing social values conflict are not conceptually clear and may result in individuals being classified into the wrong conflict typology. We present an axiomatic development of geometric algebra. One may think of a geometric algebra as allowing one to add and multiply subspaces of a vector space. Properties of the geometric product are proven and derived products called the wedge and contraction product are introduced. Linear algebraic and geometric concepts such as linear independence and orthogonality may be expressed through the above derived products. Some examples with geometric algebra are then given.

In many places throughout Alaska, non-Alaska Native certified teachers are working in communities that foster (or seek to foster) Alaska Native language and culture revitalization in the schools. Often, this means teachers with limited knowledge of the target language need to figure out how to support that content in their classrooms. This qualitative thesis examines interview and field note data collected from five non-Alaska Native teachers (working in Southwest schools) while they took summer classes at an Alaskan university. Shallow anchor systems have been widely used for decades due to their time and cost efficiency. Yet when it comes to cold regions like Alaska, new challenges caused by the harsh environment need to be resolved before they are used extensively in cold regions. One challenge associated with anchor installation could be the potential thawing of warm permafrost due to the grout mortar hydration, which might undermine the capacity of the anchor.
