Marcy announced plans to double the number of students who graduate with degrees in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields and triple the number of students who graduate with a STEM minor by 2020.

Marcus was able to formulate a game plan. He originally was recruited to play basketball at UC Davis until the roster became full. It was then suggested he enroll at Dominican where he continued his athletic career (leading the Penguins to a stunning upset of UC Davis in 2002) and changed his academic plans. He was encouraged by faculty to join a biology class in the School of Health and Natural Sciences that took him down a pre-med road where he met another premed student, Amanda Shepherd.

Smallholder farmers in western Kenya who plant maize (Zea mays L.) intercropped with beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) face many challenges associated with nutrient-poor soils and weather-related crop failures. In regions where temperatures are favorable, crops are grown twice per year during long and short rainy seasons and in other regions, once per year during one long growing season. Growing crops two times per year necessitates frequent land preparation using inversion-type tillage. Little is known about the impact of current tillage-intensive crop management on annual soil organic matter (SOM) recovery. The aim of this study was to assess changes to soil …

We consider challenges that arise in the estimation of the value of an optimal individualized treatment strategy defined as the treatment rule that maximizes the population mean outcome, where the candidate treatment rules are restricted to depend on baseline covariates. We prove a necessary and sufficient condition for the pathwise differentiability of the optimal value, a key condition needed to develop a regular asymptotically linear (RAL) estimator of this parameter. This paper reports the draft genome sequence of new Bacillus cereus strain tsu1, isolated on an agar-cellulose plate. The draft genome sequence is 5.81 Mb, revealing 5,673 coding sequences. It contains genes for cellulose-degradation and biosynthesis pathways of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and 8 rRNA genes (5S, 16S, and 23S).

Volunteering is a dominant social force that signals a healthy state. However, although the literature on volunteering is extensive, knowledge on how life’s discontinuities (life event shocks) affect volunteering is limited because most studies work with static (cross-sectional) data. To reduce this shortcoming, we use longitudinal data from Australia (HILDA) that tracks the same individuals over time to assess how individuals from different income and wealth groups respond to life and financial shocks with respect to volunteering. Although both income and wealth can act as buffers against life shocks by providing stability and reducing vulnerability - which decreases the need …

In this paper, a dynamic channel assigning along with dynamic cell sectoring model has been proposed that focuses on the Fractional Frequency Reuse (FFR) not only for interference mitigation but also for enhancement of overall system capacity in wireless networks. We partition the cells in a cluster into two part named centre user part (CUP) and edge user part (EUP). Instead of huge traffic, there may be unoccupied channels in the EUPs of the cells. Why Did The Bear Cross The Road? Comparing The Performance Of Multiple Resistance Surfaces And Connectivity Modeling Methods, Samuel A. Cushman, Jesse S. Lewis, Erin Landguth

There have been few assessments of the performance of alternative resistance surfaces, and little is known about how connectivity modeling approaches differ in their ability to predict organism movements. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of four connectivity modeling approaches applied to two resistance surfaces in predicting the locations of highway crossings by American black bears in the northern Rocky Mountains, USA. We found that a resistance surface derived directly from movement data greatly outperformed a resistance surface produced from analysis of genetic differentiation, despite their heuristic similarities. This publication provides an overview of the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) family of surveys, which are widely used by both public and private health plans and providers to assess the patient's experience of health care. Included is information on survey contents, how surveys are tailored to different users, and how the resulting information is collected, reported, and used to help consumers make choices and providers carry out quality improvement, as well as its role in pay-for-performance reimbursement.

Provided herein are vaccine vectors including an antigenic polypeptide and an HMGB 1 polypeptide present on the surface of the vaccine vector. Compositions comprising the vaccine vectors are also provided and include a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, suitably a carrier for oral or nasal administration. Also provided are methods of enhancing immune responses, in particular antibody immune response and suitably an IgA response, by administering the vaccine vectors or compositions disclosed herein to a subject.

Sea level rise (SLR) caused by climate change poses major challenges on a global, national, regional and local level. This paper examines the phenomenon of SLR and considers its likely impacts on the coastline and adjacent marine areas in the Republic of Ireland. As significant impacts are regarded as probable, an analysis is undertaken of the legislative support and the guidance available for dealing with the effects of SLR. The purpose of this study was to better understand the implications of the tablet computer for learning and, specifically, in the art classroom. A qualitative study was designed following grounded theory measures for data analysis in order to explore timely questions regarding the tablet computer and how young children react to such technology as a drawing tool. An early childhood center was accessed for this research, and 30 children between the ages of three and five years old consented to participate.
