The Nature Of Teacher Engagement At An Online High School, Jered Borup, Charles R. Graham, Jeffrey S. Drysdale Jan 2014

The Nature Of Teacher Engagement At An Online High School, Jered Borup, Charles R. Graham, Jeffrey S. Drysdale

Faculty Publications

Little research has examined the critical components of successful K-12 online schools, due in part to the theoretical focus of current frameworks on higher education rather than characteristics of K-12 online learners and environments. Using K-12 online research, this paper examined teaching presence as explained by the Community of Inquiry framework and identified additional teacher roles that needed stronger emphasis. We termed the new construct teacher engagement. Teacher engagement was shown to be helpful in describing and identifying effective teacher practices at the Open High School of Utah (OHSU), a successful online charter school. Through a series of 22 interviews …

Tomographic Imaging Of Combustion Zones Using Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (Tdlas), Avishek Guha Jan 2014

Tomographic Imaging Of Combustion Zones Using Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (Tdlas), Avishek Guha

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This work concentrates on enabling the usage of a specific variant of tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (abbr. TDLAS) for tomogaphically reconstructing spatially varying temperature and concentrations of gases with as few reconstruction artifacts as possible. The specific variant of TDLAS used here is known as wavelength modulation with second harmonic detection (abbr. WMS-2f) which uses the wavelength dependent absorbance information of two different spectroscopic transitions to determine temperature and concentration values. Traditionally, WMS-2f has generally been applied to domains where temperature although unknown, was spatially largely invariant while concentration was constant and known to a reasonable approximation (_x0006_+/- 10% …

Diocletian’S Victory Column And The Rhetoric Of Spectacular Disruption, Richard Benjamin Crosby Jan 2014

Diocletian’S Victory Column And The Rhetoric Of Spectacular Disruption, Richard Benjamin Crosby

Faculty Publications

This essay explores how the powerful system of cultural references in the architecture of Alexandria is disrupted by Roman visual rhetoric. Specifically, the essay closely analyzes Diocletian’s Victory Column, a monument to the third-century Roman ruler who put down an Alexandrian uprising. The authors argue that Rome employed a visual rhetoric of spectacular disruption as a means to insert itself into the city’s historical identity even after its siege created widespread disease and starvation. The essay builds on the substantial scholarship on public memory by describing a kind of rhetoric that poses a political, existential challenge to a reigning cultural …

Performance Of Active Vibration Isolation In The Advanced Ligo Detectors, Ryan Thomas Derosa

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The second generation of LIGO detectors has finished construction and the commissioning effort is pushing the instruments towards their designed sensitivity. Around the world similar undertakings are underway, and soon a global network capable of astrophysical observation will be operational. The first sentences are being written in an important chapter of terrestrial gravitational wave detection, an entire century after the theoretical foundations of general relativity were laid, and after decades of calculation, design, proposals, plans, and laboratory work. In order to make sensitive measurements, the detector must be well isolated from the vibrations of the ground, and much of this …

Parallel Processes In Hpx: Designing An Infrastructure For Adaptive Resource Management, Vinay Chandra Amatya

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Advancement in cutting edge technologies have enabled better energy efficiency as well as scaling computational power for the latest High Performance Computing(HPC) systems. However, complexity, due to hybrid architectures as well as emerging classes of applications, have shown poor computational scalability using conventional execution models. Thus alternative means of computation, that addresses the bottlenecks in computation, is warranted. More precisely, dynamic adaptive resource management feature, both from systems as well as application's perspective, is essential for better computational scalability and efficiency. This research presents and expands the notion of Parallel Processes as a placeholder for procedure definitions, targeted at one …

Production Of 2-Propanol, Butanol And Ethanol Using Clostridium Beijerinckii Optonii, Adam Hoogewind Jan 2014

Production Of 2-Propanol, Butanol And Ethanol Using Clostridium Beijerinckii Optonii, Adam Hoogewind

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

With an unpredictable market for gasoline and increased concerns with the pollution created by burning fossil fuels, there is a push for developing suitable replacements for gasoline. While corn-based ethanol production is the most common renewable biofuel produced in the United States, ethanol is not an ideal solution to gasoline replacement due to low energy density, hygroscopic and corrosive properties and inability to purify by distillation alone. Higher alcohols such as butanol do not have the same problems with energy density, purification and hygroscopic and corrosive properties. The fermentation of butanol by using solventogenic Clostridium species, creating acetone, butanol and …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The major focus of this study was to identify the linkage between information and consumer behavior and to examine the role that a new media index played in the identifying the tone of news stories. Past studies have relied on using the number of media stories but, this study tests a new approach, i.e., in order to analyze the effect of information by incorporating the sentiment indices. These indices were created based on the tone of the news story. The results from sentiment indices were compared to the results from the information index. Barten’s Synthetic model (BSM) was used to …

How Does The Presence Of A Special Education Teacher Impact Co-Teachers’ Behavior In An Inclusive Classroom, Ryan O. Kellems Ph.D. Jan 2014

How Does The Presence Of A Special Education Teacher Impact Co-Teachers’ Behavior In An Inclusive Classroom, Ryan O. Kellems Ph.D.

Faculty Publications

The majority of studies regarding co-teaching have primarily looked at what specific instructional practices and teacher characteristics are needed to make co-teaching an effective practice. In contrast, this study investigates how co-teaching affects a teacher’s particular teaching style and behavior. Of greatest interest is how a teacher’s use of instructional technology is impacted by the presence of a co-teacher. With many schools making inclusion a priority, the number of co-taught classes is increasing. In order for students to gain the most from classes that are co-taught, it is important that we first understand the factors that affect co-teachers. Once we …

Short Selling Around Restatement Announcements: When Do Bears Pounce?, Michael S. Drake, Linda A. Myers, Susan Scholz, Nathan Y. Sharp

Faculty Publications

This paper draws on two distinct literatures – one that investigates the impact of accounting restatements and another that investigates the trading behavior of short sellers – to further our understanding of how sophisticated investors process and respond to news about accounting corrections. We examine short-seller behavior in the days surrounding restatement announcements to determine when short sellers identify restatements and how they trade on restatement news. Our findings suggest that short sellers do not appear to anticipate restatement announcement dates, but we find that abnormal short selling is significantly higher than is typical when restatements are announced, especially for …

The Media And Mispricing: The Role Of The Business Press In The Pricing Of Accounting Information, Michael S. Drake, Nicholas M. Guest, Brady J. Twedt Jan 2014

The Media And Mispricing: The Role Of The Business Press In The Pricing Of Accounting Information, Michael S. Drake, Nicholas M. Guest, Brady J. Twedt

Faculty Publications

This study investigates the role of the business press in the pricing of accounting information. Using a comprehensive dataset of more than 111,000 earnings-related business press articles published from 2000–2010, we find that press coverage of the annual earnings announcement mitigates cash flow mispricing, but has a negligible effect on accrual mispricing. We provide evidence that this impact is driven primarily by the press disseminating the information more broadly, rather than by the creation of new content that helps investors understand the implications of accounting information. Our results suggest that the business press plays an important role in facilitating the …

Damage Evolution In Pressurized Domain: A Gradient Based Variational Approach, Navid Mozaffari

LSU Master's Theses

Construction of appropriate models through mathematical analysis for materials in order to find their main properties and ingredients and enhance the numerical simulations to predict their behavior under specific conditions is in interest even in mathematics departments rather than material science and engineering branches. Among these models, gradient damage models have reached to the specific stage because of their ability to bring the effects of micro cracks propagation into conventional continuum mechanics formulation and approximate brittle fracture as one of the most phenomena in the area of material behavior simulation. This thesis includes the application and extension of a previously …

Evaluating The Effects Of Dialect On Kindergartners' Use Of Three Grammatical Structures In Narratives, Andromeda Patrice Love

LSU Master's Theses

The aim of this study was to determine if dialect status has an effect on the frequency at which kindergarteners produce nonmainstream English markings for regular third person, IS and ARE, and regular past tense when producing oral narratives. Specifically, I wished to determine if child speakers of African American English (AAE) and child speakers of Southern White English (SWE) mark these structures with nonmainstream English forms at different rates. The narrative data came from language samples that had been previously collected from twenty kindergarten speakers of AAE and twenty kindergarten speakers of SWE. All of the children were recruited …

Evidence Of Methane Cycling Beneath The Western Margin Of The Greenland Ice Sheet, Erik L. J. E. Broemsen Jan 2014

Evidence Of Methane Cycling Beneath The Western Margin Of The Greenland Ice Sheet, Erik L. J. E. Broemsen

LSU Master's Theses

The greenhouse gas methane mainly regulated by microbial processes. Methanogenic archaea, a major biological source of methane, are a diverse group of organisms that produce methane as a metabolic byproduct. The generation of methane takes place in diverse anoxic environments using CO2 and other reduced substrates. The release of methane into oxic environments often is regulated by methanotrophic Proteobacteria and Archaea, specialized groups of bacteria that use methane as sole sources of carbon and energy. These organisms can play major roles in the regulation of methane transport into the atmosphere and make up one part of the methane cycle. Pools …

Power System Differential Model With Application To Grid Dynamic Simulation, Boyu Wang Jan 2014

Power System Differential Model With Application To Grid Dynamic Simulation, Boyu Wang

LSU Master's Theses

Nonlinearity of power system is always one of the difficulties when dealing with dynamic simulation of power systems. Solving differential-algebraic equations representing power systems are difficult without losing nonlinearity, especially for large power systems. This thesis shows an alternative method to solve nonlinear dynamical power system by producing a purely differential representation of the power systems. This new representation converts the algebraic equations to differential equations in order to have an absolute differential system. By using Runge-Kutta algorithm to solve this differential system, the results of the power system simulations are compared to trapezoidal integration algorithm commonly used to solve …

Dissolved Oxygen Dynamics And Modeling - A Case Study In A Subtropical Shallow Lake, Zhen Xu Jan 2014

Dissolved Oxygen Dynamics And Modeling - A Case Study In A Subtropical Shallow Lake, Zhen Xu

LSU Master's Theses

As one of the most valued and treasured natural resources, today many lakes in the world face degradation of their water quality due to nutrient enrichment, toxic contamination, and hydrological modification from their drainage areas. Among various water quality impairments, dissolved oxygen (DO) depletion is often a leading stressor in lake systems. Despite numerous studies on DO in deep water lakes in temperate regions, the knowledge of DO dynamics in eutrophic shallow lakes in subtropical regions is still limited. This thesis research conducted intensive DO monitoring in an eutrophic shallow lake in south Louisiana to characterize diel cycles of DO …

Tuning The Thermoelectric Performance Of Complex Oxides Through Multiscale Microstructure Engineering, Paulo Sergio Calvillo-Gonzalez Jan 2014

Tuning The Thermoelectric Performance Of Complex Oxides Through Multiscale Microstructure Engineering, Paulo Sergio Calvillo-Gonzalez

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The need for energy nowadays is causing a heated debate in our society. One way to increase the energy sustainability is to harvest waste energy from current processes. For example, industrial processes, home heating and automotive exhaust, all generate copious amounts of heat that is usually wasted. In the diesel powered automobiles, up to 65% of the chemical fuel is lost as waste heat that is mostly rejected through the cooling radiator and exhaust systems with the temperature normally exceeding 600 °C. Thermoelectric materials have the ability of converting wasted heat and temperature difference into electricity. Thermoelectric materials need to …

The Romano-Parthian Cold War: Julio-Claudian Foreign Policy In The First Century Ce And Tacitus' Annales, John J. Poirot Jan 2014

The Romano-Parthian Cold War: Julio-Claudian Foreign Policy In The First Century Ce And Tacitus' Annales, John J. Poirot

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Many ancient and modern authors view the first century CE as an unprecedented era of peace and security for the Roman Empire. These writers often identify the Roman emperor Augustus’ diplomatic settlement with Parthia (ca. 20 BCE) as an important cornerstone of the Pax Romana. But while the two ancient superpowers may have averted large-scale conflicts, Romano-Parthian relations under Augustus and the Julio-Claudians were never entirely uneventful or especially peaceful. Whether the Parthian Empire posed a real threat to Rome’s internal security or not, Julio-Claudian emperors developed elaborate “cold war”-style strategies to keep Rome’s eastern rival in check. Augustus and …

Investigation Of Factors Controlling The Dynamics Of Beach Surface Moisture Content, Phillip P. Schmutz Jan 2014

Investigation Of Factors Controlling The Dynamics Of Beach Surface Moisture Content, Phillip P. Schmutz

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the factors that control beach surface moisture dynamics. The study consists of a suite of laboratory and field experiments to document, analyze, and model the role of the key input parameters (groundwater table fluctuations, capillary actions (i.e., moisture retention, hysteresis, and hydraulic conductivity), evaporation-condensation, and sediment size) on the spatio-temporal variability of beach surface moisture content. Results from the laboratory experiments demonstrated that the capillary processes of hysteresis and hydraulic conductivity heavily influence the spatial and temporal dynamics of beach moisture. Additionally, different sediment grain sizes produced marked differences in capillary processes within the sediment column, under …

Differences In Burning Behavior Of Live And Dead Leaves, Part 1: Measurements, Thomas H. Fletcher, Dallan R. Prince

Faculty Publications

Burning behaviors of individual live and dead leaves were measured in a well-instrumented, well-controlled flat-flame burner. Manzanita (Arctostaphylos glandulosa) branches were harvested from the Chaparral near Riverside, California. Leaves were conditioned to several moisture contents. Two “live” (i.e., not fully dried) groups remained above the fiber saturation point at 34% moisture content (MC; dry basis) and 63% MC. Two “dead” groups were dried to about 4% MC, and one was rehydrated back up to 26% MC. Distinct plateaus in surface temperatures at 175◦C were observed while burning live leaves, but dead leaves showed weaker plateaus, if any. Evidence of high …

Pyrolysis yields of 80% (daf basis) were achieved at these conditions, with 60% daf tar yield at the highest temperature. The solid-state …

Leptin Regulates Nutrient Reward Via Galanin And Orexin Neurons, Amanda Laque Jan 2014

Leptin Regulates Nutrient Reward Via Galanin And Orexin Neurons, Amanda Laque

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Obesity has become a widespread concern to human health largely over the past three decades. It is thought that obesity is associated with the over consumption of calorically dense diets. The rewarding value of food is mediated through the mesolimbic dopamine system, though is less understood how appetitive control circuits relay information to existing reward circuitry. The adiposity signaling hormone, leptin, is a critical mediator of food intake and fat storage. Leptin signaling, via the long form of the leptin receptor (LepRb), is predominantly carried out within the hypothalamus. Leptin action specific to the lateral hypothalamus area (LHA) modulates reward …

The Control Of Amplitude And Direction In Bimanual Coordination, Zhujun Pan Jan 2014

The Control Of Amplitude And Direction In Bimanual Coordination, Zhujun Pan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Spatial coordination of bimanual movements is important when performing daily activities. Whereas, older adults and individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD) commonly show difficulties in temporally coordinating the hands in bimanual coordination tasks, the effects of aging and Parkinson’s disease on the quality of spatial coordination between the hands are unclear. Thus, the present work investigated the impact of older age and PD on the spatial interference in a bimanual task in which 48 right hand-dominant participants (16 young adults, 16 older adults and 16 individuals with PD) drew simultaneously two lines with both hands with varied movement amplitudes (3 and …
